Piccolo
Jenny C.

Great place to start the day! Their pour overs are personal sized so don't feel bad in ordering more! I ended up also ordering a piccolo both which were yummy. The croissant was flaky and really yummy as well. They ran out of their other toast so we ended up getting an avo toast. The avo toast is Asian influenced and includes sesame and chili. It was definitely an avo toast I've never had before. It was a super unique experience. Overall super cute coffee shop with great service and good breakfast!

This quaint coffee shop is surprisingly good. Been coming here several times to meet up with colleagues for an 8am connect. They have all the fancy drip coffee apparatus but I defer to my drink of choice - the cappuccino. The baked goods are made on premises. The Kouign Amann and the Galette are my favourites. Some of the best in Vancouver. The Croissant does not disappoint either. This is one of the friendlier specialty cafes. No ego nor snobbish behaviour. Feeling the love Modus!

Cozy spot for a coffee on a classic rainy day in YVR.

Awesome coffee! Loved the friendly atmosphere and chatty staff. Hoping to try some of the brunch menu soon too.

Yuzu Avo Toast, Strawberry Jam Coffee Cake, Tamarind Espresso Tonic
Dana S.

The aesthetic, vibe, and menu are exactly what you would expect from a hip Vancouver coffee shop, and they pull it off. I had high expectations since all the pictures I'd seen of the food looked scrumptious, and everything tasted just as good as it looked. Their menu rotates frequently. From the selection when I visited, I had the yuzu avo toast with a poached egg, strawberry jam-filled coffee cake, and a tamarind espresso tonic. The espresso tonic was definitely not something I'd usually go for, but I was intrigued by this combination of flavours and I thought it was a super interesting taste. I thought the espresso added a smoothness to the tart tamarind and tonic that was very pleasant, and I didn't feel like the other flavours masked the flavour of the espresso. I don't know if I'd get it again but I'm definitely glad I tried it, and I enjoyed every second of drinking it. The avocado toast - first of all, it's one slice of bread, but it's a huge slice of bread and absolutely worth the money. The Japanese flavours in this were delicious, I loved the generous sprinkling of seasoning. Finally, the coffee cake was also fantastic. They warmed it up for me and the texture was so good, it was almost like it melted in my mouth, and it seemed like they used a good quality jam. The staff was all very helpful and pleasant, and the space is comfortable and neatly decorated. Prices aren't cheap but not unreasonably high, and they reflect the quality.

Nice coffee joint outside of downtown, small interior sitting, very nice staff and I got the caffe latte with simple syrup, creamy texture and delicious

Cappuccino - 6oz $4.25

**COVID WAVE 2 REVIEW** This place is right next to the old MEC. The interior is pretty chill pink and green decor. Hand sanitizers are available. There's a couple of patio tables outside, and a couple of tables inside. Ordering a cappuccino as usual to test. It costs $4.25 for a 6oz. Not the cheapest around. The milk is kind of creamy, the coffee itself tasted more acidic than we liked.I like my espresso based drinks strong and matches to the creamy texture to create a great balance, and this place didn't satisfy it. Parking is available on Broadway all day during weekends, and non-rush hour on weekdays. Be ready to sink another $2/hr to park. Otherwise, parking is available in the streets behind Broadway. Onward to another place.

Modus coffee. An odd spot. Positives: Bright, open, and clean space with a nice aesthetic (exposed brick, plants abound, pink wall). Use local Nuez brand for nut milk. Donuts looked scrumptious but I had enough willpower to hold back so really can't comment on food other than appearance. They played funky hits that I would expect at disco rollerblading, yet somehow worked with the vibe in here. Negatives: No hi or warm welcome when I walked in, but the baristas seemed very smiley and friendly to two obvious regulars behind me in line. I thanked them twice for the drink and received stares in response. For some this may be no biggie but I personally found it off-putting. Why work in customer service if you don't like interacting or at the bare minimum acknowledging people? Very small (8 oz) flat white with oat milk for $5.50!!! Beyond being bad value, it was way waay waaay too acidic for my taste. I believe they used dom beans from Colombia. Anyway...enough complaints. I can sum it up by saying I won't come back for coffee, but might if they start hosting 1970s flashback parties. That was a solid soundtrack.

4.5 stars near to perfect spot for coffee Last spot on my tour of Vancouver and I somehow wished this would have been my first. This micro roaster is not in the downtown core but please do not let that stop you from taking the trek to enjoy some of the best coffee Vancouver can offer. I arrived early Saturday morning right before my flight out and my brunch down the street. I knew that I would be needing a good cup to kick my butt into gear so this would be needed. I didnt realize that the flavour would be this good. In the morning, they had a full shelf of baked goods for you to chose from. There are a lot of sweets here for you to get your sugar high if you want it. There are also some gluten free items (I'm sure of it or I'm imagining it and I'm sorry!). As for the service, top notch... the two owners and people actually roasting the beans were serving and it was great to learn from them. They were able to help me chose a bean that I would like and bring back with me. They were so patient and just willing to offering their thoughts. Flat White - Just ... so ... good. Rich, smooth, and very easy to drink. The bean was Dom and it's the perfect gentle wake up you'd need in the morning. Very minimal acidity but a full flavour of coffee to make you smile while you drink it. I did taste a bit of a brown sugar and coffee note which helps distinguish it from just the average 'good bean' out there. 4.5/5 For me, I loved it so much that I bought a bag to take it back with me on the plane and I already had 3 bags in my suitcase. BUT just enough to space to make sure I could bring home Modus with me. Amazing spot... support local businesses especially ones this good.

This is truly a hidden gem. The owners, a local couple, are the sweetest and they've put everything they are in to this place. The coffee is freshly roasted in small batches and is absolutely divine. True coffee aficionados will appreciate this place. The treats are incredible too. They're unique and artisan style. This is definitely a spot you need to check out.

Beautiful space that offers a great selection of coffees. You'll find everything from espresso, milk based to pour overs here. Coffee beans are excellent, well curated and staff is friendly. Pastry selection is quite good and the ambiance there is very nice with friendly and helpful staff. Great spot for a coffee date!

Cafe latte

Good coffee and good selection of their own roasted coffee beans. They served food as well!

Americanco misto.
Holly L.

The coffee here is good. My americano misto was nice and hot and the coffee strong and smooth. Just how I like it. However, the selection of pastries didn't appeal to me, especially the rhubarb items. I'll check again next time and hope they have something that tempts my taste buds.

cool interior!

Something pulled me toward JJ Bean....and with it being a local business it made it even a sweeter deal. I like my coffee strong, black, piping hot and served in a quality cup. So, I just keep it simple. Large Dark Roast with an Everything Bagel, which really hit the spot. The bagel was fresh, tasty and definitely a favourite. Their Rhubarb Danish took me back to my childhood in Switzerland, as it was a homemade family regular. The carefully blended sweet and sour rhubarb weaved into the perfectly baked pastry finished with toasted almonds. All of that...followed by a sip of what I can only rightly name as a cup of exquisite ground beans with character....... Yeah....I want my coffee to have character. Yup JJ. For those reading my other reviews, the basics are my baselining tool when trying a new place. The latte was as good as I've had them. The roast used was slightly acidic, fruity (to me) and had a little pleasant lingering palate. It like to sit with my drinks and take them slowly and this one was enjoyable to the last sip. The scone was excellent. The cheesy crisp was perfect. and texture was light but firm. The ambiance was extremely comfortable. The table layout alone is worth the stop. I would love to bring five friends for stop here. I LOVE the seating configurations. So many ways to use a fixed seating layout. The cappuccino was also well done; the coffee cut nicely through the milk and stayed balanced. The hot chocolate deserves a special mention -- one of the best we've had. My kid finished the whole thing, which says a lot. For food, we tried the ham and cheese pastry, which was light, crispy, and nicely melty inside. The marshmallow popcorn chocolate cookie was delicious and chewy, though it felt slightly overbaked -- most of the chew came from the marshmallow rather than the dough. The breakfast sandwich was decent if you're in a hurry, but nothing particularly unique and the least impressive item we tried. The aesthetic was dark and retro, fitting perfectly with the Gastown vibe. Warm lighting near the seating made it a cozy spot to get some work done or relax before heading out. Overall, I'd happily come back for the coffee and warm snacks. Great spot for small groups -- I'd say up to about six people.

Happy to discover that this place was nice and quiet inside so would definitely consider coming back here again. Food was awesome. I absolutely loved my Shakshuka. Might be the best Shakshuka I've ever had. Not that I'm any authority figure on what a Shakshuka should taste like. But I really enjoyed this one. The combination of flavors, the runny egg yolks, the gooeyness of the cheese...it was just such a wonderfully comforting and belly warming meal. I saw a Cinnamon Honey Latte on the board and decided to order that for my drink. These days, I can never tell when the word "Latte" is being used to describe a coffee beverage or whether it's being used to describe a beverage that has milk in it. A Matcha latte for example, tends to just be a sweetedned Matcha beverage with milk in it. No coffee thrown in. I was kinda hoping this Cinnamon Honey Latte would be milk with cinnamon and honey thrown in. It turned out to be a coffee beverage. No complaints about it. It's on me for assuming that it was milk with cinnamon and honey thrown in. I should have probably asked our server about the beverage before simply ordering it. Will make sure to do that if/when we end up here again. Kinda had my eye on the Turkish Apple Tea though so might just order that next time and the whole "Latte" dilemma wouldn't be an issue with that. My daughter's Avocado Toast looked super yummy as well. Might try ordering that next time, although Michelangelo's Mediterranean Spread was also kinda calling out to me!
