I've been getting my coffee from the world's biggest coffee chain for decades. Lately, the oomph, the zap and the sazz has just not been there, and with their bakery, pastries and sandwich options being severely inadequate..... Something pulled me toward JJ Bean....and with it being a local business it made it even a sweeter deal. I like my coffee strong, black, piping hot and served in a quality cup. So, I just keep it simple. Large Dark Roast with an Everything Bagel, which really hit the spot. The bagel was fresh, tasty and definitely a favourite. Their Rhubarb Danish took me back to my childhood in Switzerland, as it was a homemade family regular. The carefully blended sweet and sour rhubarb weaved into the perfectly baked pastry finished with toasted almonds. All of that...followed by a sip of what I can only rightly name as a cup of exquisite ground beans with character....... Yeah....I want my coffee to have character. Yup JJ. Out of many coffee shops in the area, I tend to gravitate towards JJ Bean. I typically get their Americano with room. I like how they have different milk options and sweeteners available at no extra charge. Their pastries are huge! I love their outdoor seating, perfect for people watching on a Saturday afternoon. Will get a bag of beans to take home on my next visit. read more

This is a photo of a cap to what appears to be ketchup or some container. It has been sitting on the ground near that chair for the last three weeks here at JJ. This is just one example of a ton of stuff that just tends to stay on the ground. Hear the tables in the morning are always covered with crap. There's dog hair underneath the chairs and you just gotta wonder. What would it take two minutes to come out in the morning clean up requirement to do that. read more

One of the nicer coffee shops along colorful Davie Street in downtown. I came here three times during a recent visit and enjoyed my stay each time. They make a very good espresso but also have a high quality black coffee. Since I like both, usually the espresso first, followed by the black coffee, this works great for me. Popular Yaletown shop with ample street parking was the perfect spot for early morning coffee. Good amount of indoor and outdoor seating, plenty of fresh baked muffins and croissants. Americano and matcha were perfect, self serve station had a good selection of sugar and cream options. Earth friendly utensils and stir sticks were nice to see. Staff was friendly and our drinks came up in a reasonable time. For a chain coffee location is was very good. read more

I don't live in this neighbourhood but met friends here yesterday for coffee. I actually thought it was pretty good and they agreed that it was a nice visit. The coffee is noticeably more expensive of course than places like Tim Hortons etc., but that was expected. Coffee was very good and they had three kinds on offer. The ambiance was preferable for me than Starbucks because it was brighter and more lively without being too garish inside. Really friendly staff who helped me choose since I don't know what I'm doing when all the options start getting explained to me. Typical Vancouver coffee shop food display with wraps etc., as well as yoghurts and that sort of thing. I think my favourite was the extensive outside seating which was quite well kept. read more

I was only here once but I was really impressed. The pastry display case showcased the most delicious baked goods I've seen in a long time. The cinnamon roll looked amazing! We were with a friend whose office is nearby and he said he comes here near daily with his office staff and they all love the coffee and pastries here. My family didn't order any croissants or pastries (tempting though they were!), but we DID order coffees and they were fantastic! My latte was delicious, as good as I've had, and the barista and the counter guy who took our orders were really nice. We will be back to check out the patio! read more

It's a nice place, and the food is fresh and decent, but the Southwest Chicken Wrap is way overpriced for what you get. The wrap mostly made up of the spinach tortilla, with very little filling. Should not cost $10.95. read more

* Off the chain * I'm always so hesitant to visit a chain anything, and regularly passed up JJ Bean for some other cafes. But I was walking near this location and it suddenly started raining really hard. I needed to pop in to wait out the downpour. I was really pleasantly surprised with my espresso. Okay, I've read some/most of the reviews and I wanted to voice my side of things. I'm a regular there. Every Saturday morning my friend and I show up and sit down, talk and play a couple of board games. Once the staff get to know you they are quite friendly. I like this J.J. Bean. The neighbourhood is nice. Their patio is wonderful. What's not to like? I'm trying to think back to when I first started going. I didn't find them rude, but maybe just not as friendly as they are now that they recognize my face. It's a busy coffee shop. I never seen rude service, just perhaps not the happy-happy, joy-joy service that some are expecting. I'm trying trying to refute the nay-sayers, but just offer another viewpoint. There are a lot of us regulars I see every week, so clearly it can't be all that bad, because (as another yelper pointed out) there are many other coffee shops to frequent in the area. I say, give this a go. It is not like they make horrible coffee or anything. One thing I like about JJ is that if you buy a gift card, everytime you fill it up they give you a 10% bonus. Great coffee and pumpkin muffins. Basically, just another good coffee joint. Nothing screams exceptional except the pumpkin/apple muffin. It was FANTASTIC!!! I decided to try this highly esteemed coffee chain out and see what the hype is about. I got a large vanilla latte and really enjoyed it. Their coffee has a bold rich flavor and is really enjoyable. It is definitely worth dropping in for a caffeine bold buzz. I came in at 1045- 11 am on a weekday and it was packed . Now it emptied out. Wifi is average to slow speed. Lots of mothers with their babies strolled in and it got pretty noisy. Currently it died down and there is a lot more quiet time( with background music- noise) to do some work/ reading Can't wait to try their pasties next time! Coffee was ok, better than Buzz but not as good as Coo Coo. Their roast is milder than Coo Coo, we had lattes (single and double shot). A small range of breakfast items, yoghurt granola and Bran muffin were good and an excellent start to the day. Music was a bit too loud for our liking, and might have contributed to our order being mixed up. read more

I have enjoyed a macchiato at JJ Bean twice and it was good both times! It was not the best espresso I have ever had, but it was good enough to warrant 4 stars and a second visit. The second time I went, I also tried the carrot bran muffin. It was moist, slightly sweet and very satisfying. I was not able to eat the whole muffin, so I saved half for later. The staff was nice and the facility was clean. I liked the atmosphere enough to stay and enjoy my drink in house both times. read more

Coffee chain.. This place broke my bias about coffee chains. If you are a latte holic and love strong coffee, you will love their latte. Strong espresso shot gives nice flavor to it and more importantly the staff provide coffee with consistancy so I enjoy my latte every time I get one. Nice foam not crazy bubbles like Sbux. I dropped by few days in a row on my way to work for a cup of latte every morning, but nobody informed me about their rewards card or asked me my name to build customer relationship. I understand due to its location they probably have lots of one time customers. Well, no problem. I researched and found out that, after you got their gift card to use, next time when you reload the gift card, they will give you extra 10% in your card. I go to JJ Bean North Vancouver locations quite often, and I had the impression that I will get the same consistent great service if I visit any JJ Bean location, but thanks to the girl working here on Saturday Jun 17th (cleaning the coffee area and working at the back), she proved me wrong. I am not going to bore you with all the details of my interaction, but if you have problems with me pouring 10ml of my coffee in your compost, then you should possibly find a better solution than coming up to your customer and confronting them. Seriously, it makes people uncomfortable if you came up to them and gave them a pissed off look and pointed to the sink behind the till and tell them they could pour the coffee in the sink or ask a staff to do it. Customers shouldn't be the ones finding a solution for your problems but a possible better solution is to ask the customer if they need room for cream when they pay, or maybe putting a different container for waste coffee. Just saying!!! Just to be fair, I must admit that JJ Bean muffins are really good. Overall, very tasty pastries across all the locations. Based on my experience, JJ Bean branches are very consistent in quality of food but inconsistent in quality of service. Hopefully, this review is read by the owners so they receive the high rating they deserve. read more

I tried JJ Bean (this branch) twice and in both times I ordered ice Latte, which was much better the first time, but was also fine the second time. However, the service was shocking! The server(s) has that disgusting attitude that will stop me from coming again! as a matter of fact I asked the server what ice latte's flovor do they serve, and she replied "ALL FLAVORS" :S give me a break! do I need to do a crash course about coffee flavors before I get to any coffee shop or what! I seem to gravitate towards JJ Bean when in YT, even if the service is a bit cold and the coffee tastes slightly burnt. The atmosphere of the shop is okay, and I can imagine that the patio is a nice spot to hang on warmer (where are they?) days. You can always find some reading material and the lines go fairly quickly. The pastries look pretty good, too. Too bad it costs at least an additional extra couple of dollars to park a few streets over, at least, if you don't live in the hood. Here, I experienced possibly the worst service I have ever received at a coffee shop. Seriously, how difficult can it be to be pleasant, polite, quick and clean? Isn't that the very base level of service one would expect? Oh no, not here. My friend stood at the counter reading the menu while I waited at the end of the line, and was told by the snarky coffee-chicks in no uncertain terms to get to the back of the line. My coffee was fine. It was a simple black dark-roast. Not a difficult order. My friend ordered an iced Americano, which took about 10 minutes to make. It had a long green slimy thing floating in it. When she brought it back to be replaced, she was offered no explanation nor apology. JJ Bean on Davie, you just suck. There are oodles of other choices around. read more

It makes my heart break - just a little. Such fabulous coffee; but no sense of service. I headed here after lunch to satisfy my caffeine wants (you know, to get me through the afternoon), and well I walked in and stood at the counter for what seemed like 5 minutes (but was probably only 45 seconds). It may not sound like a long time, but when you're in a hurry - time is something you don't have! Anyway - when I was finally acknowledged (after the baristas finished their conversation), I ordered myself an iced vanilla latte. Easy enough? You would think so, and as a former barista, I KNOW SO. But no. My HALF EMPTY iced vanilla latte is slammed on the bar... Now usually I'm a "half full" kind a person - but after this experience, I can definitely say that this particular JJ Bean's service is half empty. read more

Oh, how I'm torn on this particular JJ. Now, let's set the record straight: I mostly enjoy JJ Bean's brew. It's never too acidic, never too hot, never really offensive; you know, it's a pretty decent cuppa. Also, to be clear: my usual order at any coffee shop is a pour-over, an espresso, or an americano. There may be an odd misto thrown in when I'm feeling milky, but I usually always almost exclusively like to taste my coffee. Hence, the no milk rule. And really, who needs those extra calories? It's a decent meeting place when in the area, and truth be known, it's where I was offered my job at Yelp, so this JJ's got a twee lil' spot in me 'eart. No, I don't like Yaletown and its tiny dogs, and I don't like baristas with attitude; but I do like a good spot to have meetings in, and do appreciate the no wifi rule (I'm trying to work here!). Ahhh, nostalgia, it's sort of like Folgers in your cup. Or JJ Bean in my case. I was curious about what my first "Yelp" was. So I went digging... and 43 pages back I found it, JJ Bean. But jeesh, did I really only write two lines? It's still true, I have meetings there sometimes, sitting up on that little second level alongside of others chatting or typing away. And every now and again, I grab a cup to go. Heck, I've even gotten some work done sitting in one of those almost comfy arm chairs. But I think what I love most about this JJ Bean is the coffee condiment station - that's right a station. I've had some of the friendliest smiles, "Good mornings" and just pure pleasantness here. This JJ's has 2 strikes from me. Ya, hard to believe. It's a nice location for sure, but when I went at the end of June (the 27th to be exact, and then again around the 1st or 2nd July), I was appalled at the mood of the counter servers. I tried to make a joke to lighten them up, but it dropped like a lead balloon. EEK! You could actually cut the air with a knife it was so tense. I come here often only because of the location and outdoor patio. That's it. Of all the JJ Beans, I find this one the most pretentious, hipster, and often times rude (from staff). I never know which drink is mine. I've been given the wrong order several times. I've also asked for a Masala Tea here, twice (the name of their Chai tea, just tea, none of that syrup crap), and charged for a tea latte. When I've clarified, "No, I just want tea," and point to the actual tea bags... Once I was told, "we don't have that, so I charged you for a tea latte," (uh, no, the tea is right there), and once we told, "oh, okay, you can have that" yet still charged me for the latte, which is $3 more. I don't drink milk. I just don't get it. So, come here for the beautiful patio, not the service. read more

This location is a pretty nice JJ Bean. They have the same menu as other JJ Beans (unsurprisingly), but the staff were friendly and the atmosphere is appropriately Yaletown. The interior is light and bright, and the design seems a bit swankier than other JJ Beans I've been to - fitting as it's in Yaletown! I prefer my coffee shops a bit dingier, or more hipster - this one made me feel a little like I wouldn't want to stay all day and work as it was quite fancy. The coffee was the usual tasty kind - definitely can't fault them on that! And the staff were chatty but polite which is a great combo when there's a line up - I felt valued but also didn't feel impelled to keep the conversation going for too long. I love JJ Bean's new patio, and I think they've done a great job with interior (a huge improvement over what used to be there!). The coffee is consistently good, and I've enjoyed their loose leaf tea, as well. Since my big beef in general is customer service, I have to comment here as well. Things have improved over the last several months, but I still find a degree of indifference from some staff members. They seem put upon by each order, and can't bother to force a smile. I generally visit JJ Bean because it's convenient - I probably wouldn't go out of my way, but it serves its purpose. read more

Good coffee shop. Not as intimidating as the one on Commercial. Lots of seating, which I appreciate and which you can't get as easily at, say, a Starbucks. $3.50 for a decent-tasting medium hot chocolate, incl tax. Downside: they automatically gave me a "to-go" cup instead of a "for here" one, even though I was clearly staying (I wasn't wearing my jacket anymore, and it was very visibly raining snow outside. I don't understand why this place doesn't have power outlets. The patio is pretty nice though if you want to just sit and chill. Inside of the shop is quite limited in terms of seating.
