This is such a cute and cozy place. Love the art theme here! Wasn't too sure what to expect in terms of noise level. Happy to discover that this place was nice and quiet inside so would definitely consider coming back here again. Food was awesome. I absolutely loved my Shakshuka. Might be the best Shakshuka I've ever had. Not that I'm any authority figure on what a Shakshuka should taste like. But I really enjoyed this one. The combination of flavors, the runny egg yolks, the gooeyness of the cheese...it was just such a wonderfully comforting and belly warming meal. I saw a Cinnamon Honey Latte on the board and decided to order that for my drink. These days, I can never tell when the word "Latte" is being used to describe a coffee beverage or whether it's being used to describe a beverage that has milk in it. A Matcha latte for example, tends to just be a sweetedned Matcha beverage with milk in it. No coffee thrown in. I was kinda hoping this Cinnamon Honey Latte would be milk with cinnamon and honey thrown in. It turned out to be a coffee beverage. No complaints about it. It's on me for assuming that it was milk with cinnamon and honey thrown in. I should have probably asked our server about the beverage before simply ordering it. Will make sure to do that if/when we end up here again. Kinda had my eye on the Turkish Apple Tea though so might just order that next time and the whole "Latte" dilemma wouldn't be an issue with that. Came for Sunday brunch at 2pm and the place was full! Greeted and promptly added to a waitlist and after five minutes, seated quickly. Ordered a mimosa, flat white with oat milk, Turkish coffee and shakshouka to share. Super cute and super tasty. It's small so depending on what time you get there it could be a wait, but they are good about moving the tables along to accommodate others while not rushing anyone in the process. Of note, they aren't really able to accommodate substitutions but they went out of their way to accommodate my request anyway, which I appreciated. The tater tots are perfect which were the highlight for me. They also have a nice selection of tea drinks which I liked as most focus only on coffee. I am always looking for places to go for brunch. Café Portrait is quite nice if you are in the West End, with lots of portraits (hence the name), it almost feels like being in an art gallery. The names of the dishes on the menu are quite fun, especially if you are an art lover. I ordered the Modigliani benedict: smoked salmon eggs benedict. A bit simple, I wish I could have had salad instead of tater tots. I also a strawberry matcha latte. It was quite weak in strawberry and matcha flavour. I saw someone who ordered it and had a lot more strawberry, I guess I was unlucky. Might give it another try. read more

A very cozy and nicely decorated cafe on Denman street. Staff were nice and attentive. Service was fast. Food and drinks slightly pricy averaging about $28 per person for brunch. I thought the presentation was nice but did find the food to be slightly under seasoned. This place has not only great food but wonderful art on the walls and on each table. Apparently the portraits are done by the owners father. It's a pretty small place, most tables are for two but there are two tables where you can fit four or cramp five. The atmosphere is wonderful and on a public holiday we only had to wait 10 minutes for five. All the food looks really good. I had the monet which is an eggy skillet with three eggs and beef sausage around the sides and tomatoes. Great flavour. I also had a bit of the Shakshuka which had great tomato flavour. The other dishes looked great too like the French toast with ice cream. Would definitely recommend. read more

I wanted to give this place 5 stars but the baby cockroach that scurried across our table keeps me from doing so. My husband got so upset he was ready to flip the table. I tried to play down the disgusting insect that I stayed. Ugh! I'm still nauseous from the thought of it. It's a very cute place but beware all. Cafe Portrait's food taste excellent!! I love that the food was fresh. It's made with fresh simple ingredients. They're not overwhelming, just the right amount of spice and taste. The food came to us hot. I really loved the beef ravioli. The yogurt on top added a fresh taste. It was soft, cooked well and it was such a comforting dish which I tried to eat slowly as to savour the dish. I would say that the apple was okay. I wish the apple taste was stronger. My friend got the crème brûlée tea. That one smelled amazing and had a stronger taste. The shakshuka was also delicious and I can confirm that if you dip the tater tot in the shakshuka, that it is also a good experience The place was filled but we didn't wait that long. The portraits in the cafe is such a lovely theme. It's definitely a unique brunch spot. Hopefully you guys get to go there! I'm planning to have the carbonara next time. read more

I came for the novelty of the turkish coffee haha. It tastes kinda like diluted espresso, and though I think there's sugar added it doesn't taste sweet at all so I think its just to cut any coffee bitterness I'd think. It comes with a Turkish delight as well! Lavender latte is a bit diluted in flavor for my taste. Vancouver has no shortage of beautiful brunch spots and Cafe Portrait is no different. The small restaurant provides a French ambiance with a nice outdoor seating area. The restaurant is also order style, so you have to bring your menu up to the till after getting seated to order your food. It doesn't take long to receive your drinks and food. Every cup and plate that landed on our tiny table tasted fantastic. I very much recommend the Baileys Coffee Hot Cocktail to start your day. But the major recommendation from me was the French Toast with Bacon. Being coated in locally crafted Maple Syrup, it was incredibly delicious. I also used the syrup to coat my partners Hash Browns and the sweet and salty combination was one to remember. Overall, Cafe Portrait adds to Vancouvers incredible reputation for high quality brunch spots. You cannot go wrong waiting for a table here, as your taste buds will be greatly rewarded with an experience that you will remember for the rest of your day and beyond. read more

Let me ask you something. When you go out to eat, do you expect the food to arrive at the same time? So that everyone can enjoy their order and eat together? Yes? oh..ok. So, I'm not crazy. Just checking. Now here's my experience of this place. We had actually just come from an amazing breakfast place when we stubbled on Cafe Portrait on Denman, and it literally stopped us as the interior and its cozy atmosphere grabbed our attention. So, we decided to try it a few days later. Even though the atmosphere is artistic, cute and unique if you like your personal space....this place may be a bit cluttered for you. So, you order at the coffee bar then sit at your table...yeah, it's one of those. No problem, we ordered an Espresso and Latte, and the Espresso was really very good. We also ordered the Monet Plate and the Kokoschka Breakfast. Waited about 40 min and the Monet Plate arrived thinking that the other was on its way, but it didn't arrive. We asked one of the staff and she said.....it'll be about 5-10 min for the other one. Hmmmm.....ok. I can either start eating my meal while my company sits there watching me, or I can wait for his to arrive while mine goes stone cold. I told her....well we were kind of hoping to eat together....you know the whole point of a dine out? What was quite fascinating was that she looked at me like I was from outer space, and then she proceeded to tell me that the orders come out in the order they were place and I reminded her that both orders were place at exactly the same time. The response to that unfortunately was.....well...that's the way the kitchen does it. Ok...so we waited and waited and waited and the food didn't arrive and we had to cancel it. No explanation or follow up from management, no expedited process to get the meal that was missed out to the guest....a complete lack of gesture to indicate concern or care. With the food that did arrive, I noticed that it didn't look like the pictures and the two eggs were cooked inconsistently....while one was soft the other was done medium....and too oily (see pic). I would say this is a perfect example of "Don't Judge a Book by its Cover". We got the dish that never arrived refunded onto our card, left hungry and went someplace else for a snack. read more

While walking along Denman Street, I stumbled upon Cafe Portrait, a super cute, cozy and artsy restaurant cafe. The interior decor is full of art pieces, perfect for an art lover! They also run jazz/French music throughout your stay, maintaining a very cozy yet lively atmosphere. I ordered the Munch Shakshuka and my boyfriend ordered the Chagall Waffle. Unfortunately, we aren't coffee drinkers, but if we were, we would have ordered their famous Turkish coffee. The Shakshuka was very delicious! The tomato base was very refreshing, well seasoned and combined very well with the avocado and sourdough. If you're looking for something savoury but not too heavy on the palette, I highly recommend this! If you want something sweet, the only item on the menu is their Chagall Waffle. It was a nice contrast against our savoury choice but a very typical brunch waffle. They also have daily fresh baked goods sold at the till! However we were a bit late a missed out on their baked food . Overall, we loved the atmosphere and the cafe! If you're in the area, definitely check it out! read more
