Went to get a smog, the guy was hanging out in a Snap On tool truck in the parking lot. I waited half an hour and eventually went to the truck and asked if I could get a smog, he said to just hang out and he will get to me in a bit. The first few times I took one of my cars to Patrick at Moe's Smog he was located on Newbury Rd. I continued to take my cars to him for more than two decades after he moved to Lawrence Dr. As time passed he started to get grumpy and rude. This increased over the years and I noticed that he would treat many other customers the same way. If I got there less than a half hour before closing time, he told me to come back another day even if he didn't have anything he was working on. Although his website shows he is open on Saturday, he told me that he won't work on cars. The last time I went there, I handed him an envelope with the paperwork I thought he needed. He rummaged through the papers, gave me attitude and threw anything he didn't want or need over the counter towards me and on the floor. This wasn't the first time he did this and shows what a Rude S0B he's become! I wanted to pull the car up the the entrance of the bay and explained it was because of a problem with the ignition switch that made it hard to start the engine and that it may stall if the steering wheel wasn't handled with care. He insisted that he would do it, and as I predicted, he had problems starting it and it stalled as he pulled up to the the entrance. This was after he screwed with the position switches on my seat and changed the tilt of the steering wheel, (which he always does). After it stalled, he threw I hissy fit, refused to do the smog test and went back to the stall to shovel another cup of Ramen Noodles down his gullet. He screwed up my steering wheel more than it already was, and I should have taken him to small claims court. He'll give you a small discount if you use the password, "Buttercup", which doesn't fit his demeanor, because it means, "sweet, charming, or delightful". After that last fiasco with Mr. RamenNoodles, I started taking my cars to Reino Mobil at Reino and Borchard Roads. Their fee is less than what Patrick charges and I don't have to deal with an attitude problem. This is the fee on their website coupon: $39.75 (REG. 59.75) +8.25 certificate. read more

He looked at me with wide eyes, confusion, and attitude when I would ask questions about the service. He was rude and dismissive. Never returning again. read more

I've used Patrick twice to smog vehicles. This is a one bay shop, but the service is excellent. No bs. The waiting room has an engine sitting on a stand and there's a ton of pictures and car stuff on the walls. When I showed up Patrick (The owner) ignored me, I filled out the information on the clipboard in the office and he walked past me and said nothing except wait outside not in the office. He then decided to sit and talk to another friend about inappropriate subjects. Took my 2007 Duramax diesel for smog check and it failed. $2,500 and a new turbo later, no check engine light after 300 miles of driving. So take it back for retest, and Mr Moe fails it on a visual due to excessive soot in exhaust. 07 does not have DEF, and it is normal for black smoke to be emitted when you stomp on the throttle. Not so happy with Mr. Moe. I drove it straight to another test only station, and it passed with flying colors. Not only that but it was less expensive. Moe needs to get his eyes re-calibrated. I will NEVER be back, and would strongly discourage anyone from going there. Never in my 46 years of driving have I ever experienced anything like this before. read more

Moe(?) saw me heading for the Smog Check sign and came right over to take care of me. He pulled my car into the stall and met me inside. Paperwork, smog check, and payment took maybe 15-20 minutes, and I was back in my car. I have WAY more 4 and 5 star reviews than anything else *** It's painful for me to write this review, because I've had really good experiences at Moe's in the past. Today, however, was a deal breaker. First, they don't make appointments. That would be ok IF, upon entering their establishment, they treated you with courtesy, looked at your DMV notice, gave you the paperwork to fill out, and provided an estimated wait time. Here's what happened when I walked in. There was one lady at the counter being helped by the only gentleman in the office, and one man sitting quietly in a wait chair. That's all fine and good. But here's where it went downhill. The gentleman behind the counter - before he was finished with the lady he was helping - looked at me and said, "What do you need?" (Duh, a smog test. This is a smog-test-only establishment.) That's not what I said, however. I politely and with a smile on my face said, "I have 2 cars that need to be smogged," and I held up my DMV papers. The gentleman nodded in the direction of a wait chair and said, "Ok, hang out." Ok . . . not what I expected, but maybe that was his attempt at being casual. "Hey, hang out, have a good time in my tiny, dirty, way-too-hot waiting room." So I sat down and waited. He disappeared without another word to me, and didn't even glance at my DMV papers. So I waited . . . and waited . . . the only thing to look at was a TV tuned to Fox News. THAT'S RIGHT - - - Fox News in your place of business. I can only assume that ANY business, especially in these tough economic times, wants the business of both liberals and conservatives - not to mention the in-betweeners. And BTW, I think everyone can tell by the number of pre-1970s American cars in your lot that you at least lean to the right. Be as liberal or conservative as you want. Vote for whomever you want. But please, keep the TV nonpartisan. A local news channel, HGTV, or even Spike. I can understand Spike at a car place. Still, I told myself, I've always been treated nicely here. I'm going to ignore that insanely poor business decision and wait a little longer. After a few more minutes, though, I couldn't take it. I still had not been told anything other than to "hang out," and I decided to go somewhere else. And I won't be coming back. P.S. My husband, my son, and I all drive American cars. Pathetic excuse for customer service. First my office calls to see if they are open. The person On the phone hung up 3 times. I finally go over there and pull up to get a smog and the owner? Looks at me with a blank face and says "sup". Excellent first impression. I respond with I wanted to smog my car, he says FLAT OUT "put it in a parking spot and give me the paperwork". I walked away immediately. I would imagine a small business would focus on customer service. Apparently not this one. My dad has been using Moe's shop for decades. Does what he is supposed to do, properly and legally smog vehicles. Seems to be a love it or hate it spread on reviews. The laws around smog tests have become more and more stringent and the shop owners are the ones bearing the weight of these ever changing rules/laws. Short Story - Good shop to get a smog test. Long Story - My last smog was a $800 Catalytic update 2000 Dodge Ram V10. I went to the guy I had been using (geographically more convenient). He tells me I need two catalytic converters instead of the one present on the truck, visual inspection. The whole thing threw me off, did not make sense. Anyhow, head over to American Muffler, No! there are models with both two and/or one CAT. Fine! I get the spec's and info (photos on phone). I have info from CA State Web Sites. No deal does not match his books, the guy can't budge! I head over to Moe's, he takes the time to look up the specs on my truck verifies that the new CAT I need to buy is a single unit and should (not will) pass. Verifies the CAT currently on the truck is an incorrect model number (beyond me why this is). And double checks the part numbers and code numbers involved. Have not paid a dollar yet. I get the new CAT installed, take it back to Moe's, get the truck smog tested and pay the fee. That is not just customer service, that is someone helping someone else get sorted out. My poor elderly parents were almost taken for $1,000 by another smog shop so I recommended they take their car to Patrick. Patrick really helped them out and fixed the issue. I have always taken my cars here for smog tests since I've lived in the area (over ten years) and the new location is bigger and better than the old place, which only had one bay. I always use a coupon and try to go during off hours, since they don't take appointments, but I have never waited more than 20-25 minutes, tops. Patrick, the owner, and the other guys that work there are nice enough once you get to know them- they aren't the maître 'D's at Le Cirque, nor the concierges at the Plaza in terms of ingratiating themselves to the customer and fawning over you, but it's a garage folks, so just get over it. If you want a red carpet when you enter, white glove service and a mint when you are done, go to the Bentley dealer. These guys do what the name says: Smog Test Only, and they do it quickly and efficiently, if not elegantly, and for a good price. Perhaps not the place to take your car if you have delicate sensibilities, political agendas, and/or are offended by television programming, but for the rest of us average car owners, Moe's does the job and does it well. read more
