I lived in Monroe 20 yrs ago and I still crave the Shrimp delight. I have tried to copy it to no avail.

Always a favorite! The food is great, the atmosphere is perfect. But it's the staff who make this place. Historic dive spot in my hometown.

Imagine someone opened a restaurant, ran it for 10 years, and then closed it... say, back in 1967. Fast forward to today. They go back in, dust off the decor a little bit, and open up for business. That's Mohawk. Excellent service provided by white coated waiters, ice cold beer, good food, fair prices. As other reviews correctly state, you will either love it or hate it. I love this place. I heard they opened a new one across I-20, but I've never been there. I do not care. I confess that part of my affection is nostalgia. The old place has character. I went to La Tech, 25 miles west in Ruston. Whenever we could afford it, we went to Monroe to eat seafood and drink beer. Ruston was dry. This place has the best fried shrimp I've ever had---anywhere, including New Orleans, then or now. I always get a dozen oysters on the half shell also. Every time I go back to Tech, I go to the Mohawk and chow down. It never disappoints. read more

This place hasn't changed since I was born and that's a plus! Been visiting this restaurant for 30 years now and it's the best. Staff is awesome and these guys have been here for years. Raw oysters are always cold and delicious and shucked to order. Fried shrimp plate with house made tartar sauce is a longtime favorite. We passed through on the way to TX and this was not good. The only good part was that our waiter was a very nice gentleman. We walked in and there was almost no light in the restaurant. It felt depressing sitting in the almost completely dark dining area. Then we ordered cokes, which tasted like they came from a 2 liter that had been sitting open for a while. We ordered a shrimp cocktail which was a bunch of small shrimp smothered in cocktail sauce--I was expecting a traditional shrimp cocktail (the menu was handwritten with no description). We got salads and it was only lettuce, a few slices of tomato and what tasted like Kraft ranch--super disappointing because I love a good salad with house dressing. I got crawfish pasta that was bland, generic, and way way overpriced. My husband got a shrimp platter that was $18 for 7 bland shrimp and some fries. Stepped back into time when I entered this place. Great ambience - unapologetically old school and simple. Draft beer was served in frozen mug and developed ice crystals on the surface (as it should be). Seafood gumbo had a dark/thick roux and was loaded with shrimp (as it should be) and the service was efficient but not rushed (as it should be). 5 stars indeed. read more

I won't go back, this place is as tired as it is old. Old recipes, old building same tired old menu. This is one of those places people went to in the 70's and it might have been ok but those same old octogenarians go eat that same old food today and that's how they stay afloat. The only reason it gets 3 stars is the raw oysters. The fried fish tasted of old oil same as the fried shrimp. The boiled shrimp were straight our of a bag (and this is in Louisiana!) and lacked flavor. The decor was our the 70s. This place screams John Taffer from Bar Rescue!! read more

Looking to step back in time? Here you will find wait staff in starched white uniforms. You will also find Jack Dempsey's gloves dangling from a ceiling fan, and Bear Bryant's hat on a mounted deer's antlers behind the bar. Supposedly he lost it in a bet in this very establishment. The Mohawk is an old established restaurant with a dedicated clientele and an equally dedicated staff. The menu is simple and doesn't change. The food is simple and doesn't change. The salads are simple and do not change. But the quality is consistently good, IF you like seafood, and if you like it simply prepared. The Mohawk has an ambiance that money cannot buy. An atmosphere that cannot be faked. It is the real deal and sitting in one of the rear booths makes one feel like they are in a Southern Godfather movie. The restaurant is old, with yellowing from years of cigarettes and grease. It has a patina of age that cannot be duplicated, although most restaurants would not want to. The décor is 1970s seafood joint, and I suspect that is when the taxidermy and nets were hung on the walls. The drink selection at the bar is not fashionable. If you like whiskey sours or an Old Fashioned, you'll feel right at home, and they will be prepared correctly with no frills. The Mohawk is not a place for everyone. Some will not like it at all. But if you want a different kind of dining experience, a trip back in time, and an unvarnished look at the past, you will find it preserved here. read more

What a find!!! Great little gem in Monroe! Service was excellent and food was great. We had stuffed crabs and tuna steak - both perfectly prepared- and a couple of beers. Its a older place but worth the visit; locals already know it's value but visitors to the area should not hesitate. read more

We went to Mohawk for the oysters due to all the rave reviews, but honestly for the size and price there are other restaurants. This would be a good lunch place but i think for a date night or dinner in general it is lacking as well as a minimal wine list just not a dinner spot. read more

This place is fantastically old school. There are no windows, which normally I wouldn't like. But this place makes it work. The atmosphere has a great feel. It smells of rich mahogany. The decor is tavern/hunting lodge. It's got a great bar with a ton of booths. The menu is straightforward but has a large selection of non seafood items. Plus, they have Yeungling on tap which is rare for a place in the Deep South. Bubba, who has worked here for over 30 years, can answer any of your questions. We ordered a dozen oysters that came with horseradish, lemon, crackers, and cocktail sauce, a large bowl of gumbo (perfect flavor), and a seafood platter that comes with catfish, shrimp, oysters, all fried, a pile of fries, and a shrimp stuffed hush puppy. never again. I remember going here with my grandmother when I was a very young girl, and when I walked in I could almost smell her and feel her with me. I had pretty good memories of this place. Not anymore. The reason we went there was because my fiance' wanted some oysters and I thought ok, memories. We waited almost 30 minutes for oysters (raw) and I ordered the gumbo, which arrived at our table at 12:45... I am no chef but I can cook decent food and to describe the gumbo I would have to say Brown gravy, dash of Tony's, no vegetables, about 4 small shrimp with a lil bit of rice. Thank God he left crackers on the table. I have never been so disappointed with my lunch anywhere in this town. and thats saying something. The only way I will ever go back there will be because HE wants fresh oysters, and I've already eaten somewhere else. read more

You need to have a high level of patience with this restaurant. My boyfriend and I were having date night and decided to go here because we had not eaten there before. First, I don't know how the owner has not been cited for employment discrimination. The only 2 women working there were white and all of the "waitstaff" were black men. Second, don't expect refills or your empty bowls and plates to be removed. We came in, told there would be a 20-25 wait, we sat at the bar to wait and watch the basketball game on tv. I noticed the couple behind us had empty dishes on their table as well as empty glasses. There was also an empty table that was covered in empty dishes and glasses. This did not change for 20 minutes. The couple behind us finally had to get up and go to the bar for refills on their drinks. To make things worse the owner or manager was just standing at the bar either talking or just standing there while this dirty table and thirsty people just sat there. Did I mention I only saw one server on the floor the whole time? I've been in the industry for almost 17 years and have never seen this level of disregard and disrespect for not only your customers, but for your staff and yourself. If you are a local owner and won't bus the tables in your own restaurant then shame on you. We left and went somewhere else. I was very disappointed because we had heard the food was good and I love oysters. read more
