A wonderful time honored place that we have enjoyed many times. This time was not different. We got the Shrimp Delight Salad it was fresh shrimp and delicious every time, my wife loves it. Gumbo has a rich dark brown rouge with lots of seafood with deep flavor. Oysters on the half she'll perfect size, not too big not too small with a fresh quality taste, perfect. As anyone can tell you they have the same dust there that they had in the 1970's. L o l !! For various reasons I had not been there in years. But when I did go back and ordered my favorite shrimp remoulade it came out with a cup of finely diced onions spread over the top! It did not have the onions in the past but they swore it had not changed when I questioned it. read more

The dark interior, out dated fishing decor, menus under the glass top tables are all part of the experience here. I've been coming to the Mohawk all my life. This place is a Monroe institution! Not a visit to Monroe goes by that we don't come here at least once for a meal. I think if they ever changed anything about this place it would go out of business. It's where the locals go, but tourists would find it awesome, too...not that Monroe has tourists. There may be a short wait for the food, but it's always worth it. Okay, so I'm very much in the minority here, since most reviewers have that this place was fantastic, and since I was in Monroe while driving across the South, I figured I'd give it a try. So the first thing I'll open with is the good. The service was superb, with courteous and professional waitstaff with food that came quickly. I ordered a full sized order of gumbo together with a side of onion rings and a margarita on the side. The margarita was good. The gumbo and onion rings were both serviceable, but not as good as I'd been expecting from the reviews I'd read. The gumbo wasn't as spicy as I'd have liked, but since it came with Tabasco Sauce, I was able to resolve that issue without much difficulty. the main issues I had with the gumbo were that it was, well, warm rather than hot and the shrimp had a bit too much of a "fishy" flavor--I suspect that it was not as fresh as it could have been. The onion rings likewise were of good quality, but not outstanding. I also felt that they left a bit too much of a greasy aftertaste. I want to emphasize that this was not bad food, but I was disappointed considering the reviews that I'd read. read more

Mohawk is my restaurant of choice for fresh shucked, raw oysters. There aren't too many places here that can compare & Mohawk is yet another local favorite for the area. Don't expect fancy decor- walking in is like a blast from the past! This is a no-frills place, service is a little slow, and the waiters wear white jackets & are polite and respectful. I've had the fried seafood platters a few times, which were average since many places here offer those items. The most surprising & unexpected tasty dish was the spaghetti & meatballs. Maybe I was starving when I ordered, but I was quite pleased, given the foodie-holic that I am. For Monroe, the spaghetti here is totally legit so give it a try! read more

Delicious! 1st time to visit from Texas and we would definitely return! My family of 4 ordered the Combination platter 4 different ways and everyone loved their choices. The food was HOT, well seasoned, and some of the best fried catfish I've ever had! The waiter was great, I wish I could remember his name, and give him credit. Travelling from DFW area to Florida. Arrived around 8:20 and they close at 9 pm. We got seated around 8:30 or so and I was concerned about getting there too late. Our waiter, Lee (who was great) said "Don't worry about it. If you're in by 9:00, you're fine. We lock the doors at 9:00". We had a variety of food. The service was great. Two of the people had catfish, which they loved. I had a po boy, and another had the gumbo. All was good. The hamburger my wife got was a little dry, but tasted good. Don't worry about the looks. I have been eating at the Mohawk off and on since I was a kid, and I am fairly certain some of the decor has been around as long as I have. You will either love it or hate it - for me, I love it. It is, as many have said, like stepping back in time. The service is impeccable, and the bar is well stocked and just fun to sit at while you wait for a table. The Mohawk usually has the best raw oysters you will find in north Louisiana. That said, I am not crazy about their fried oysters, except in their po-boys. But their fried shrimp is terrific. It is flatten out and battered in a light, almost tempura-style batter. I have never had fried shrimp anywhere else that taste quite like those at the Mohawk. I like the house tartar and seafood sauces. The house salads are perfunctory. The Texas-style toast is awesome (my wife considers it her dessert when we go.) So, if you see me there on a Friday evening, it will probably be with a Manhattan, a dozen raw, and an order of fried shrimp in front of me. Who could ask for anything more? read more

Used to live in Monroe years ago. Mohawk hasn't change a bit and that makes it as great as always. Jeff was our waiter and took great care of us. Had a cold beer while deciding what we were going to eat. Beer was cold and had a chilled glass too. Ordered a dozen oysters on the half shell. They were some of the best I have had in a long time. The house sauce that comes with them is perfect. We had the shrimp plate and a oyster poboy. Both were delicious. Jeff was attentive but also let us enjoy our meal. As we entered the restaurant we noticed oysters on the counter and we perked up because we love oysters on the half shell. It's like taking a step back in time, walking into Mohawk. I went here with some close friends who live in the area that I hadn't visited in a while. I wanted something special and they suggested Mohawk. I was not disappointed. I don't think the décor has been updated in decades and that's a good thing. You could easily walk in here and, aside from them taking credit cards, you'd think it was the 1960's. It's a classic oyster bar and restaurant in every sense imaginable. The food is of excellent quality. The service is excellent. The prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is great. I was surprised a place like this even existed in northern Louisiana. You'd expect to see a place like this in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, etc. but Monroe? Nah, I'd have never imagined. We all had raw oysters for the appetizer and I had stuffed shrimp for my entrée. The rest of the table had a variety of dishes, all of which were great. What got me was how reasonable the prices are here. You'd pay double or more at some places in south Louisiana for food of this caliber. Parking at night was a little on the sketchy side...the foliage makes for some blind spots and, not being familiar with the area, I'd have felt better with more lighting. All in all, though, it was fine. We had no issues. I don't get up into these parts too often, but I'll be going back through here on my next trip. Good times with good people.
