We had some challenges getting to stay here, our first dates got cancelled because of a COVID SiP, our rebook got cancelled when fires in the area forced an evacuation but we persevered and are so happy that we did. We've already booked a return trip for a week this summer. Winter is a special time in the Russian River area. Even with rain, the area is beautiful, not many tourists to deal with and the locals are great. Summer is more crowded but the river beaches are alive then and all of the restaurants and bars will be open. Too bad some of them haven't survived COVID but new ones are sure to open.

I love the Bed & Breakfast feel of this place. There are a couple of other guest rooms on the property that they rent out, and the owners also live there so you run into the other guests and owners from time to time. There are two cats and an ADORABLE chihuahua named Yoda Bella on the property too. There is a hot tub, a coastal redwood ring, a bamboo cave, a creek behind the property (bring your water shoes and you can walk all the way down the creek to the Russian River!) and plenty of hammocks to relax in. It was great that the employees set up your umbrella for you. Bathrooms are not luxury (as expected) so be prepared to rough it a little bit in that department. We booked two nights and managed to make it a whole 30 minutes before turning around and driving home, all the way back to Sacramento. The website (and a myriad of social media posts) sell a charming riverside camping experience. Reality? Imagine campsites packed so tightly together that you can practically borrow your neighbor's toothbrush without leaving your chair. The separation between sites appears to be measured in inches rather than feet. The glamping tents and tiny cabins on-site are also crammed together like someone lost a game of campground Tetris. Privacy is apparently considered an optional upgrade. As an added bonus, there was a large homeless encampment under the bridge crossing the Russian River right next to the tent camp sites. Along with it came the sounds, smells, and general atmosphere that definitely weren't featured in the promotional photos. The lodge rooms looked tired, run down, and in desperate need of some love. Calling this place "rustic" would be doing some Olympic level stretching. We arrived excited for a relaxing getaway and left 30 minutes later feeling like we'd been catfished by a campground. All of this, in addition to the cold reception of a locked lobby office door, and weird looks from sketchy people wandering around the "beach and resort". Yikes. 10 out of 10 would recommend... driving right past it. Save your money, save your vacation, and don't let the website photos or influencer posts fool you the way they fooled us.

Since the produce & fish/meat here is so good, we moved away from staying in B&Bs to renting from RRG so that we could cook for ourselves. Each property has a distinct personality and feel--a small change in location can make a big difference here in the amount of direct sun, fog, hot or cool, or how isolated or centrally located you feel--so do your research or just ask the helpful folks at RRG (Julz has been particularly helpful about selecting a new property for different needs). Some houses have lots of steps (it's hilly here), some have very sunny decks, some have river access with kayaks or canoes and/or docks, others are in the redwoods which tends to be cooler. Kitchens also vary--most are well-appointed and all have standard appliances including a gas grill. If there's something critical for your holiday, make sure the place you choose has it (i.e. hottub, river access, dog friendly, redwood shade, etc.). Yes, they do ask you to clean out the frig and take out your own garbage & recyclying. There are laundry machines so you can wash clothes and also towels if you need clean ones during your stay--it's what the Brits call "self catering"--not a hotel, right? We like the privacy and DIY dynamic. BabbleOn: We stayed here in March many years back because we thought it would be a little sunnier in the wet season. The brook is lovely right next to the house and the house is bright and good sized; we used the gas fire a lot and only got one day on the small deck because it was so wet. Good well appointed kitchen. It's in old Cazadero--which is a trip to drive through--narrow roads up the hill through redwoods with lots of houses and then it opens out and you're there in a pretty neighborhood. Dreamweaver: stayed with 2 friends and it could easily suit 6 people with enough space for some alone time for all. 3 good bedrooms--the coolest is in the downstairs w/its own deck. BOTH decks get a lot of sun this time of year (late July)--so the afternoons were a little warm (heatwave for the area, that means 80F+)--which meant we spent time swimming in the river and on the dock or in the shade around the firepit in the backyard. Beautiful gardens and really well-appointed kitchen and also everything you could need for river fun. Do note that the river is deep on this side--as it over an adult's head, so if you aren't a strong swimmer, do use the life vests in the back shed (paddles watershoes even suntan lotion was all there!). There's not much current though--it's quite calm and about 2/3 of the way across you can stand on a gravel shelf. No hottub, but we didn't miss it. EasyDays: small, more rustic, up the hill in the same neighborhood as Dreamweaver. Good for 2 people--not for more with 2B/1Ba. Kitchen can be hit or miss if you're a serious cook--but visitors leave implements they bought behind, so there's always a new surprise (dough cutter and rolling pin this year). The deck surrounded by redwoods is the star attraction. LOTS of stairs and the steepest driveway you've ever seen.

The deck had a great outdoor dining table and awesome grill. The yard was a very nice size which was great for a little game of soccer and a water fight to cool down. When we pulled up to the house, I was very happy to see that the community of homes is VERY spread out, so the home is pretty secluded. We walked up the stairs to find a very cozy home and guest house. The first night was spent cooking, drinking wine, and hanging out in the hot tub. The kitchen is well-stocked with utensils, so we cooked breakfast and dinner here each day. We were close to the river, so we spend the second day kayaking. The home has a TV/DVD player, so when we were exhausted in the evening, we could relax and watch movies or play some of the games available in the house. Wineries are not too far, so we spent the third day wine tasting. We had a great vacation, and we hope to return next summer!
