5-17-2020 Our first venture out since beaches opened up recently. The 2020 pandemic had residents and visitors alike sheltering i n place. There are still certain restrictions to follow for beach goers but to be able to see the Pacific Ocean here at Mokuleia Beach was a blessing. It was a welcome escape from being what seemed like a mini house arrest for the past month and a half. A perfect day- the weather, the deepest hues of the ocean and the waves unfurling white water breaking onto the shoreline was priceless. A magnificent sight to behold. It was the first time we took our fur baby galavanting for her very first holoholo adventure. On the drive we passed horses, tropical flowers and lush greenery. Dillingham airfield held memories of a flight adventure hubs and our daughter went on. We drove as far as Camp Erdman where my family camped during my childhood years and later I went to summer camp and shhh, had my first kiss. We were playing tourists today bringing along with us the leis and balloons that were delivered to our home from our graduating daughter. It was reason to leave the house and celebrate with freedom and a long overdue basking of sunshine and eye candy of the beauty past Waialua. Hubs said as a Jeep pulled up aside of our car: they are laughing at us. No wonder, we had leis on and were taking photos of ourselves and our Fur baby against the backdrop of the beautiful ocean. Yes, pretty comical but they stayed in their vehicle til we took a few snap shots. What a day to celebrate!!! Congrats to all the 2020 grads who had or will be having virtual graduations. Though we go as far north as my Jeep is allowed away from people to relax, the review still applies. The spiritual energy you feel here is amazing, if you're an empath you'll thank me, though you may actually feel a little drained the next day. If you are old enough to remember the heyday of beach-going at Mok's you are probably over 40, and by that I mean the days when Mokuleia Beach had a full bathroom complex with shower stalls, toilets, changing rooms and BBQ grills, and because of this the beach was pretty popular with local families and tourists before the days of Yelp, IG and Tripadvisor. It was a place you could always go to for the same familiar, predictable beauty of a beach- it had rough, secluded, rugged, windswept shores with a wild beauty to it and you couldn't help but feel a certain romantic quality every time you came here. I remember childhood days when we'd trek out from town to Mokuleia as a family and spend all day here because the drive was so long. We'd BBQ, swim, play, look for shells, watch the parachuters come down from the sky, sleep under the towels in the warm sun, shower in the lava rock encrusted compound, then head home by sunset. I'd haunt this place in the summer time as a teenager when I first learned how to drive, and me and a friend would come out for an all-day tanning fest and watch the sun go down while eating our sandwiches and drinking our cans of Hawaiian Sun fruit drinks. Maybe of all the beaches, this beach held so many fond memories for me. As the saying goes 'all good things must come to an end' and so it did -the bathrooms and shower stalls were all razed down to the ground years ago because the state of Hawaii could no longer maintain the property. They also wanted to deter the many homeless that had set up camp and permanent residence around the perimeter of the beach park. The state figured if there were no showers and no flushing toilets the homeless would leave, and they did. Now all that's left are porta potties dotting the landscape. There are no more BBQ areas and the parking lot pavement is falling apart. The place is no longer romantic to me as the landscape has changed so much and what I remember from my childhood and young adulthood is so much more different. There doesn't seem to be as many families anymore and the park is not a hotspot of activity as it used to have, but the place still holds onto its wild rugged beauty and manages to survive without the presence of humans. If you want isolated, limited, windy, wild and rugged, come here to a beach with limited resources. It's only a few hundred feet from the main road and it seems like a few hundred miles from Honolulu. read more

Talk about having a whole beach to yourself! My fiancé and I had already visited Waimea Falls, so it was all-board the "Lost" train. I've never watched it, but he was determined to find out which was the featured Hawaiian beach in the show. Google told us it was Mokuleia. From where we were staying (on the East side of the island) it was about an hour drive. Not worth it, in my opinion, but it was a wonderful trip. Plus we didn't have anything better to do. We drove into the "countryside" of Oahu and past the skydiving school. There was plenty of parking. Most people were just flying their kites. We were the only ones on "our" section of the beach, so we took a nap. Super peaceful and serene. No tourists at all. The main con was the lack of real restrooms, though there was a shower. Apparently the beach looked different from when "Lost" was filmed, understandably because of how many years have passed. What made the drive worthwhile was a few hours of exploring the nearby city of Waialua. Lots of great eateries and shops there. All in all, I'm glad we took the trip. It's a "Lost" fan's dream come true! read more

Looking for sea turtles and monk seals, Amy and I drove out to this beach on the North Shore of Oahu... This was quite the adventure because we both hadn't been here before and didn't know what to expect. First of all, it's about a 50 minute drive from Honolulu (without traffic). My GPS took us on a narrow street where we had to pull to the side of the road to let oncoming cars pass by. Then, we parked on a graveled area, far from the beach. Luckily, Amy saw the entrance and we walked down a long unpaved path towards the ocean. When we got to the beach, it reminded me of Lanikai or Kailua Beach. I'm used to South Shore, like Ala Moana and Waikiki where it's calmer, has a reef, and is less windy. Mokule'ia is "purer" - as in "natural" and untouched. This is simple beauty... That's the best way I can describe it... open, plain, and free... wow... yeah... I read the other reviews about how this is where the television series, "Lost" was filmed. That's cool! Amy and I just wanted to see turtles and seals, but there were none. (We did see some horses!) That just means we need to return and try again! Notes: no trash cans or restrooms available. Came here for some beautiful scenic waves and beach but what did I stumble into instead??  Naked, naked, naked asses!!!!  All hanging out about 100 yards to the right.  God bless these courageous folks.  Personally, shrinkage came into mind.  It's beautiful here, seriously.  90% of the the beach is not a nudist hangout. If you're lucky, you may see friendly horses greeting you when you walk toward the beach, they're naked too. read more

Beautiful spot to go to, very secluded, and empty for the most part, the views here are just breathtaking.(maybe I shouldn't review this spot to keep the tourists from infesting this beach!?!?) If you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the rare Hawaiian Monk Seal chillaxin' on the sand for a quick minute. Nothing ticks me off than to see all kinds of trash(glass, condoms, etc. left by people(most likely local punks) who don't respect the land which gives me no choice but to leave this message in a way they can understand... My go-to beach for stargazing. This beach is empty on most days/nights and has a good stretch of sand. There are no bathrooms here, and you might spot a homeless person or two here, but they're nice people. Definitely a locals' beach. This beach has a reef and isn't as swimmable as others, but it's great for fishing! Parking is abundant too. read more

I was underwhelmed. Yeah, it was windy and a bit cloudy when I went. The beach isn't pristine sand (lots of stuff from the surrounding trees mixed in the sand made walking a bit challenging), the shore break is fine but the water is so shallow it's kinda dangerous to body surf without getting banged up by the reefs. Next time out this way I'll go further down the road and try one of the easier-to-reach beaches across from Dillingham airfield or past that. read more

The final stop for my Saturday Adventure with my beautiful friend from San Francisco was Mokuleia Beach Park. Of course we stopped off by Mokuleia Polo Beach before continuing on to the beach park. Mokuleia Polo Beach is located near Mokuleia Polo Club. In order to get to the beach we had to find the walkway near the wooden fence. We walked on the dirt sandy walkway until we reached the beach. I noticed a couple was getting photographed for their wedding pictures. There were several other individuals enjoying the beach. I spotted a group of individuals riding on horses. They travelled from one fenced area to the next. After spending several minutes at Mokuleia Polo Beach then my friend and I headed back to her rental car. We went further down to Mokuleia Beach Park. Once she found a parking spot in the parking lot we found a short pathway to get to the beach. I noticed there were picnic tables at the park. I spotted someone flying a kite. On the BeachSide a person was flying their drone over the waters. As my friend was relaxing on the beach and enjoying the waters...I was taking in the beautiful view of the surrounding area. We stayed at Mokuleia Beach Park until after the sunset. #luckywelivehawaii #beautifulsunset 65/100 read more

Pleasant surprise! I went out to the beach to read and watch sunset. Aaand then I heard some one yell, " I see 5 of them!" I looked out and there they were.... A little city of sea turtles. I walked along the shore for 30mins and it was non stop sea turtles grazing along the shoreline partially hidden by the waves crashing to the shore. Any time of the day you are bound to see beautiful beaches; and if you're lucky, you may spot a Sea Turtle. I picked a friend up before heading to Mokuleia Beach; which was about an hour from Honolulu. This was one of my favorite beaches! Not only is it not crowded, but it's in an area that you wouldn't expect. Located near a horse ranch, this lovely beach offers wonderful sunset views, horse-riding along the beach and best of all....You're practically by yourself! It seems like no one knows about this beach. I came on a Saturday to escape the crowded Waikiki Beach and was able to take ALL.THE.PICTURES.I. WANTED! YESSS! It's totally secluded from anything and everyone. Many reviews discuss this being a nude beach; I didn't see nude people, but I wouldn't have mind a little "looky-looky". (Smiles). This beach doesn't offer any amenities, such as water, towels, trashcans, benches or anything like that, so make sure you bring your own items. However, it's dog-friendly, although I didn't see any dogs on the beach. I had seen people taking lovely wedding photos; such a great idea! Now, let's move on to that lovely sunset views! OHH-MMM--GGGG! How could anyone NOT want to live in Hawaii with the gorgeous view that it offers? I feel in love with this beach after laying in the water and sand and taking in the views. Sweet little beach! I came here to chill and relax after skydiving nearby at Skydive Hawaii. It was around 11 am on a Sunday on April 1, and it was really quiet! There was only one other couple fishing there. A little later on during the day, a few more people came, but this beach seems to be not a huge tourist trap, so it's nice and quiet and an excellent place to relax. The shore line isn't huge, so you are pretty close to the waves. The path that leads from the parking area to the beach is a nice walk too- there is lots of green and some horses (see photo). Great spot just to read, tan, and relaxxxxx. read more

This beach is pretty secluded and and the parking is plenty! This seems to be a spot of wind sports, so you'll have plenty to watch, i.e. kite surfing, wind surfing, etc. Pros: Quiet, there's a shower, lot's of parking, gorgeous, fun to watch wind surfers Cons: Only a few port-o-potties and their nasty, hard to find shade so bring your own umbrella is you're staying long. We were lucky and found a spot under a teeny tree/bush but there aren't a lot of them... super rocky so wear water shoes!!! read more

Beautiful beach and it wasn't very busy at all. Parking was great and convenient. We actually bbq with our grill in the park area where they have picnic tables then took the food to the beach area and enjoyed it there. The beach is pretty rocky and there's algae so we didn't get all the way in waves can get pretty strong too but it does have a gorgeous view read more

Tons of parking..but a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG walk to get to an area without many rocks. The water was a little cold, but it was still beautiful. Right next to the skydiving place so you'll be seeing lots of planes and people falling from the sky lol. read more

This is one of my favorite beaches EVER. Not to swim, for it's too rocky. Not to surf, 'cause the surf breaks too fast. But to camp out. Many of my college weekends were spent up here; a tent up, some of your closest friends, and a campfire made of old pallets you got from the back of Safeway in Mililani. You know what I'm talking about. It's not about the drinking, I didn't really drink much back then. It's the fact that out there there really is nothing else to listen to besides your friend, the fire, and the waves. And maybe a guitar if you brought one. Just make sure it's your beach guitar 'cause it can get pretty windy...and you don't wanna sacrifice a non sandy guitar to the beach gods. My favorite spot is all the way at the end, almost near Kaena Point, where you can park your car/truck/whatever you got and walk down a small hill, that spot's fantastic! Oh, and btw, for you LOST fanatics, the original shots for the pilot were filmed here! (well, the beach is pretty long so I'm not entirely sure which part, but that prolly got a few of you SFers happy) EDIT: I can't believe i forgot to include this, but this is one of my favorite memories: the BEST way to wake up is with the sun slowly peakin up over the mountain range slowly awaking you at 7 in the morning, and your senses slowly coming into conciousness. I remember it in this order: Sight, through closed eyes, the sun lighting me up from my dream. Touch, my hands moving and being scratched by the sand..and cool air blown. Smell, sand & ocean Then SOUND SOUND SOUND came crashing in all at once as I woke up to the sound of the waves crashing. read more

Sea Turtles on the sand, salt air blowing, and tons of beautiful reef fish in the water. That is what I am talking about. Hawaii. Not a person in sight for yards and yards in either direction. Yes, we are sitting in front of my friend's beach house but we are still on Mokule'ia beach. BEAUTIFUL. My daughter enjoyed snorkeling and finding night time sand crab hunting. One of my newest additions to my list of Favorite North Shore Beaches. This beach is pretty secluded accessed via short path. Parking is along the road, and there's plenty. Mokule'ia is pure nature, so there are no trashcans, recreational items (barbecues, picnic benches) or bathroom facilities. However, the water is crystal clear and beautiful shades of blue filled with colorful reef fish - perfect for snorkeling. Previously on LOST ... We came here because of the television show Lost, and stayed because of the seclusion and beauty . This beach is what's known as "Crash Beach" to fellow "Losties " The "Others" camp is just a short walk up the beach, but the signs posted say private property . It was fun to see the familiar yellow cabins. The waves , though lovely ,were too large and powerful for swimming, but we watched some dudes kitesurfing . It was awesome to be where one of my favorite pilots of all time was filmed at . I think we saw 6 people total the entire visit. It's a long way to get here from town and Waikiki, so plan ahead. Pack some water, snacks, lunch, etc...My sister's boyfriend knew the shortcut roads how to get here. No traffic at all except for the area where they play polo. My boyfriend immediately recognized this area as the set for the tv show LOST. We had camping trips here nearby at Camp Erdman when I was at Royal elementary school and that was a loooong time ago. Half of my cabin roommates never made it to the end of the week at camp and they left early on to go back home, lol. Anyways, it was a nice walk down memory lane. The beach is stunning and almost deserted, just a few families here and there doing the same. I miss the island ohana life. Yes, lots of rocks near the shoreline, so be careful venturing in the water. Otherwise, it is so peaceful and quiet, just to lay out on the sand and get a tan. It was also fun to watch the parachuters jump out the planes and hearing the noise of the glider planes nearby taking off and landing. A beautiful area to get away without leaving the island. We saw a few guys that went spearfishing and they had quite a few fish they took back to their trucks. Parking is very easy. Nude beach nearby? I never saw it! Damn! Next time! read more

Went here to try out something new. You get tired of the same old beach all the time. We were amazed to see 1)albatross flying overhead, 2)about 35 sea turtles, 3)tons of interesting shells including one of a heart urchin. The sand is soft and the water is clean and calm. To say this is my favorite beach because Lost was filmed here would be cliché. Aside from Lost, this is where my husband and I like to go to simply relax. We don't have to worry about anyone stepping on our toes or invading our bubble... That's how secluded it is. As selfish as it sounds, I hope it stays that way. I was fortunate enough to get front row seating for honu viewing. Felt so peaceful watching them with the ocean roaring in the background. I don't like the idea of leaving my dog home alone for long periods of time, but because it is a pet-friendly beach, it gets an additional thumbs up from me. read more

Gorgeous blue waters. Mild waves. Rocky beachfront so bring your water shoes. Not too crowded. Parking lot complete with picnic tables, port-o-potties, and an "outdoor shower" for rinsing off. No sea turtles on our visit though:( Big draw: this was the crash site where they filmed Lost! I only wish I spotted Jack Shephard! This has become my favorite beach in all of Oahu! It's so peaceful and the water and beach is a perfect spot to relax. It's rocky so it's not the best for swimming but I did go in for a dip. It's a long drive from the Waikiki area up to here on the North Shore. No traffic along the Farrington Highway, and the parking was plentiful. It's a wide open space and grassy area with benches for picnics, and then several beach access points. At the beach, it's rather secluded and somewhat narrow at times, though it is pretty clean and sandy. But do watch for a few rocky points. The water is nice and clear for the most part. read more

My friend and I seen a cute little spot on this beach while we were up on Kealia trail. It was the perfect little spot with parking, trees hiding the beach and a spot in the water with a sand bottom and a shore break far enough out that we had plenty of calm water to swim around in. There were only a few other people here that day. I took my family back today and there were a few more families but still so chill and not packed at all! I love this little spot. No bathrooms or food near though so bring your cooler and Umbrella and chair and enjoy. read more

Don't get me wrong, I love this beach. If it were just me sunbathing, I would give Mokulei'a a 4-star rating. But, as a parent who also needs to ensure that the 7-year-old enjoy himself, Mokulei'a is a 2. ---- If beach-going in the summer on the North Shore, I sometimes choose Mokulei'a because it definitely isn't as crowed as Waimea and I can easily find a spot to park on the side of the road. Yes, this beach and serene and all, but definitely not too keiki-friendly because: -Windy = Painful gusts of sand. -Strong currents. -Not too many open spots to swim because it is kind of rocky in the water. -No bathrooms or showers. -Water is EXTRA salty here. However, if your kid isn't much of a swimmer and just likes to play on the shoreline, you'll be fine and your beach day will be nice and peaceful, for the most part. read more

If you wanna get away from it all...go here. You gotta pay the price in terms of drive (I live in Mililani) but it's worth it if you want seclusion. Good swimming with a lot of sealife cruising around. read more
