Super excellent experience. Went in to buy a a new wetsuit and got fitted perfectly with the first one straight off the rack. The space is very clean and open and I was treated very politely. During the process, I was informed that they do not have tangible gift cards, but they are emailed. When I asked the employee if he could send me some photos of the board via text or I could email him and he could reply he said, " No I got way too much going on to do that, if you want the board you got to come in." I said I'm in San Diego----- long pause. I said, " Man you rubbed me the wrong way, I'm going somewhere else." He said , "COOL.'" If I ran my businesses like this I would be out of businesses. love this shop.. the employees helped me pick out a board on my birthday. Ended up with a Mitzven 9'6". I didn't know what to get when i went in there, and the board i ended up with has been one of my favorite boards ever. I went back for a wetsuit and other random stuff i needed. Everyone there is really chill and knowledgeable when it comes to boards/fins/gear. Seems like everything they sell is really high quality and from local and smaller companies, so you're supporting the scene by spending your money there instead of somewhere else. But when I went in today, not a single employee was wearing a mask or taking any other COVID protection measures. Yeah, it's laid back and I guess sometimes the 'tude comes off like flies on your cheesecake but I like the vibe. It's not a place full of glass, glitz and glamor but caters to the down-low side of local surfers (or wannabes), especially the ones with cash in hand. This is not "upper crust" Beverly Hills or fashionably trendy Melrose, this is Venice Beach. So stoners, bums and winos rub elbows with aggro BMW-driving yuppies in Armanis and it all makes for a glorious clash of culture. This is what this place is all about. Their schtick is cultural cool but if you come here looking for the standard "surfer discount" or bum-town price, you won't find it. Those Patagonia wetsuits are killer as are the Liddle custom surfboards but you'll pay, baby. Oh yes, you'll pay. But the friendly feel of the place, the surf movies playing on the flat-screens and the kicked-back clothing collection make for a comfortable and close experience that might have you believing that localism is just a fantasy of the past and "Mi ola es su ola" pervades the mindset. It does not. The big fish always eats the little fish. Like the piles of pre-shrunk hemp T's folded oh-so-neatly, looks are deceiving and marketing is the hook. That's what a business is all about. So if they don't welcome you with a fragrant flower lei and a huge splif, don't be upset. I've been surfing since the early 70's so I probably have more time in the water than most of the children working there have been alive. I walked into the shop one day and thought that I had somehow become invisible. No one greeted me or asked me if I needed anything. Anyway, I figure that they're typical customer is probably a yuppie-newbie looking for a $1000+ longboard to hang on a wall in their house. It's funny how a lot of "surfers" buy boards based on the fact that they really just want to be seen with a certain type of board. The place is great museum but a lousy store. read more

We walked in and the sales person (didn't get his name) looked straight at us and just continued his facetime call with his friend. So my initial impression of them wasn't great. Reason, the two guys that were working at the time (or maybe the one sitting on the bike next to the cashier might've just been a friend keeping the other company) seemed a bit 'too' chill & laid back. What's that mean you ask? When we asked them if they had any pointers or tips for surf newbs like us, they just kinda shrugged us off and said, "just watch what everyone else does." They didn't give us any price range or when the time from rental would start or anything like that.... Didn't come off too friendly or helpful.. When we got back from my new found love for surfing, they asked if we had a good time & when we asked how much for the 3 or so hours we were out, he shrugged his shoulders & said, "$20 is cool". Coo! Sleek surf shop with unusual, smaller brand boards. Best thing about it though, are the Gato Hroi (sp?) wetsuits. No cheesey megacorp logos, just slick neoprene suits in flat black and various toned-down colorblocks. Very fresh, especially since surf fashion/culture/merch is supersaturated with giant megamoney brands with boring aesthetics. Oh and they make original Mollusk t-shirts that are very original. The treehouse made me feel very happy and like I was six and at the beach with my family. Good vibes all around. read more

Well, we have been going to Mollusk since it opened. I already had plenty of gear but when my son started surfing we rented boards for him there, I've bought swimsuits, etc. Ok, yes I see they are laid back, they are surfers, not business men and obviously not wonks from Sports Chalet - who, by the way - give the worst service in town every time I go there. I have had nothing but genuine and helpful experiences here at Mollusk. For a time there was a contest-winning long board they let us rent out every week, a very special board to the owner which was his own personal board, and he did us that favor. It was a GREAT ride at San Onofre! When I run in there alone and something needs to get up on my car they will pop it on my racks if I need help. I love this neighborhood place and go there any time I can make my way down to Venice to try and support the place. If you want someone to treat you like Paris Hilton it may not be the place for you. If you're a surfer used to dealing with surfers, you'll love it. My only caveat if beware of the vulture parking cops down there. I have gotten 2 hefty tickets while getting my stuff at Mollusk - just park legit! And put plenty of coins in! read more

First of all, excellent name. I mean, clearly, with a name that awesome you know right from the git go that this place is seriously cool. Along with a solid collection of boards (surf + skate), the Mollusk guys have broadened the idea of what a surf store is all about. They seem to understand that surfers are typically pretty cool people and might be interested in cool stuff beyond the surf. Take, for example, Mollusk's sweet collection of art and photography books (books by Raymond Pettibon among others). Another sign that this isn't your typical surf store is the art gallery and a whole section of the store devoted to an art installation that looks like a crazy treehouse. Yes! But, of course, the first thing most surfers are going to be checking out are the boards. From what I saw, they have a good selection of long boards, fishes and, I'm guessing, everything in between. The prices are steep but this stuff is custom and the quality shows. Also check out the cool screen-printed t-shirts, hoodies, etc. Nice design throughout. Lastly, the guys who work there are really friendly and knowledgeable and just generally seem like good human beings. If you're in the neighborhood, well worth the visit. read more

These guys represent. I went in on a whim while on vacation without my board and got to talking with some of the guys there about egg shaped boards and how all the rentals I get when on vacation are usually pretty crappy softtop boards. They showed me a really nice 6' 8" egg by Fine Line but it was only for sale... seeing my disappointment they made a few phone calls and actually got one of their friends to bring down a Fine Line board for me the next morning and barely charged me anything extra for it. I basically got ten times the board, ten times the fun, and really personal service. I'm not suggesting they'll always be so amenable but they're super nice, know what they're talking about, and are well worth supporting. The shop itself is nicely stocked with great films by my favorites, Woodshed Films, as well as cooler apparel and vibe than most surf stores... it's a bit more grown up and less surf rat. The boards there were quality and I'm definitely considering the Fine Line for a new go to board! Thanks a lot guys for making my Venice surf experience a great one. read more

I stop in regularly to browse the boards when I'm in the area, getting coffee at Menotti's, or vegan lunch next door at SEED, or feeling abused after waiting tooooo long for service at B/A across the street....I always feel better after a visit to this unique surf shop. Got a wetsuit as a bday gift but I had to change for another size. It lead me to a credit of almost $250 which they wrote on a receipt. I lost the receipt and went to see if I could use the credit but somehow they don't keep track of their billing system and credit. They could find in their books that I exchange it and that I had the credit, but still they say they won't give me the credit without the receipt. In other words, their lazy system and poor client management made me lose $250 and they made and easy money, bad business.. read more

Living in Venice, I have really wanted to learn one of the favorite pastimes of the area since lived lived here - surfing! I didn't want to buy a board right away while learning.. I didn't know if I would prefer a long board or a different kind. Anyways, I pretty much expected their "beater collection" for rentals but was pleasantly surprised with their selection. I love this place for it's retro vibes. Been surfing for over a decade and have always been down with the old school vibes, so I was super happy to see a unique mom and pop kind of shop. My first visit here was when it opened like in 2006 or so and the vibes I got from the boys at the counter were super mellow and they didn't really pay attention and were in their own world...uh what do you expect it's Venice...weed smoking hippies right! But, once I approached them they kind of warmed up a bit. I was in awh with all the quad and twin fin fishes and awesome retro boards that I just wanted to hug and sleep next to one if I could...so beautiful, but way to expensive for me! And, I love that tree house looking office and spiral staircase they had up there....is that up to building code? Visit number 2 in 2008: came in to Mollusk with some of my surfer babe friends to ask a few questions about helping my friend sell some of her retro skateboards that she makes herself...the vibe not so friendly again...but we didn't really care so much and got our questions answered, the dudes there were nice after we made a better impression on them. Visit number 3 in 2009: So walked in to Mollusk with a bunch of non surfer type girls and myself (only surfer girl) and got some really really bad vibes. It was the first time I had seen another girl at the counter with some other dude. And, boy oh boy she really didn't give a crap. Not even a hello or goodbye...I had to say hello. Lame I tell you lame. I've been to many a surf shop and surfed many different waves and this place needs to be friendlier. Come on Mollusk don't use the fact that you are in L.A. as an excuse to be unfriendly. Granted most experienced surfers can't stand kooks in the water or really want to answer lame questions like how do you surf, but look where your location is...kook central so might as well be nice and make a buck while doing it right? I still love your shop, but you keep those antics up and I'm just gonna have to walk in there disguised as a tourist and ask you as many annoying questions as I can! The customer service is terrible. I got in the store on a Wednesday afternoon, it was empty, I was the only customer there and the one guy working there just wouldnt help me at all. I wanted to get some fixing products for my board and whenever I asked him about the ones they were selling he would barely give me some unhelpful answer and return to his computer. I'm a real surfer, and that store clear only sell products for people who wanna show off some "cool" surfboard styles and crazy looking clothes. Not a surf shop. read more

i give this shop two more stars than they deserve only because their aesthetics and creative presentation would a get perfect 5 star rating if it weren't for this one defect. The thing that kills it, is the vibe and personality of the store. I would strongly recommend moving the store. Possibly to anywhere that is not around me. Mollusk rented me a fantastic board: a hardbody longboard, unlike the foamy glorified boogie boards that every other rental place seems to peddle. This really took my surfing to the next level -- which for me is the level of being able to stand up once in a while, before falling off. Highly recommended. read more

I want to give this place a better review because we like the Mollusk in SF so much. However, I have to say that they are not the most welcoming to female surfers. The vibe is "too cool" to talk to you unless you're a dude. They have a small inventory of artisan boards that are quite expensive, but they do have some cool shirts. read more
