This place is right on the main boardwalk of Venice behind the skate park which is great if you're walking around and decide to get a bike but if you're looking for a place to park don't go in this area Jays staff is helpful but the bikes are old and rusty and there is a small selection. We came here only because it was open after 5pm and it was definitely expensive. Would totally rent from here again!! The guys helping us out were really friendly and didn't try to upsell at all. We rented foam surfboards from them for $18/hr -- they're located pretty much right on the sand, and you can easily walk out to the water from here. We asked if we would need wetsuits thấy day, and they said not--appreciated that they didn't try to sell us on things we didn't need. They have a storage space for things you don't want to leave on the sand, and were kind and patient with us newbies! read more

One issue was that it took a little long to get out of the rental spot because one of the batteries were dead and needed to be replaced and it took a while for staff to get around to replacing it, which took into a bit of our time paid for. On ride back from the Santa Monica Pier to Venice, my son's bike chain became detached (we own these bikes and did not rent). We headed to Jay's as I was familiar that they did repairs, although I had never been a customer before. The guy in the back immediately took my sons bike and began working on it. Within minutes the bike was repaired to perfect working condition (the tension on the chain needed to be adjusted). I asked how much and he said $5. Five years after my first review, and I've been coming here every 1-2 months since with my young daughter, Bella, to rent bikes for the magical 20-minute ride along the wonderful winding cycle path (along the beach itself, not the promenade) down to Santa Monica Pier for a few hours on the fun fair - and back again. (A must-do activity at least once, but we've been doing it 8-10 times a year, and we never ever get tired of it). These guys at Jays rentals are awesome every time - always so fast, friendly and enthusiastic about making sure each customer is 100% happy. The best in the area - by far. Last week, though, our visit took on a whole new perspective (hence this update) when we took a peak in their sister shop located right across the sidewalk, opposite, and - wowzer! - discovered a treasure trove of amazing trinkets, bags, hats, clothes, towels, jewelry, incense sticks, oils, soaps - all kinds of fascinating gift and souvenirs - as well as more bikes and electric scooters. (See photos). Make sure you browse this place also. Very high quality merchandise from a really great business owner. If you're looking for a surf board rental, look no further. Location is just 3 mins walk from the surf spot, and it was easy to find. From the rental to rerun, the whole experience was seamless. Rental feee was $20/hr, and although we returned a little later than 1hr the guys there were totally cool with it. Big bonus point for having a 9ft soft board rental as well! Will def come back next time i'm in the area. read more

I had to pump my personal bike and the attendant was kind to show me the machine they have in the store for precision pumping, exactly 25 psi! for 2 bucks i was able to have a smooth riding bike again, they offer many rentals like skateboards and scooters. We had such a great experience this morning at Jay's! We were planning on hitting up Perry's, but they don't open until 10. I randomly found Jay's on yelp and saw they had awesome reviews and opened at 8, so we ended up there. I'm so glad we did! It was far cheaper than Perry's and the customer service was AWESOME! My husband and I were being very indecisive about what we wanted (we were trying to bike for the first time with our 15 month old), but the guy who helped us was beyond patient and extremely accommodating. We tried out several different bikes and he kept pulling them out for us. We asked for helmets of varying sizes and they provided. Then, we ended up coming back after leaving to trade bikes. He started our time over for us so we weren't even charged for the time we were being so indecisive! As a bonus, they had some great options for children/babies/toddlers. We had a lovely ride along the bike path and we owe it to Jay's. We can't wait to rent from them again! read more

The bikelock we used from Jays decided not to unlock when we locked the bikes at Santa Monica Peer. We called Jays, explained the problem, in minutes they came to our location and cut the lock off. When we returned the bikes they expressed how sorry they were about the inconvenience with the lock and took off money our fare. Go Anywhere else and save literally hundreds! Zuma Jay's in Malibu is $20 for 24hr. This place is $70+ with fees etc. You should just buy your own Wavestorm soft top for $180. I said I wanted a surfboard for a day, they told me "$15 soft $20 hard" which is the usual price at any beach. That was actually the hourly rate. read more

My review for the Bike Rentals only. Price is reasonable - $6/hr (for first 2 hours), and $15 for 3 hours. My bf & I came to J's Rentals a couple weekends ago since we wanted to ride bikes along the beach. A couple of teen boys were working and quite helpful, since we wanted to make sure where could ride. The bikes can come with a basket and lock, included at no charge. I think both of our bike's tire treads were a little bald, but other than that, we had so much fun riding. We rode all the way up to Santa Monica Pier and back down. Total for 2 bikes @ 2 hours each = $24. I would come back to J's and rent their bikes again if we're ever in the area and in the mood! read more

These guys are great! I rented a tandem bike for myself and my daughter and they set that bike up for us within 5 minutes. Helmets, locks, all was provided and well explained. My experience was top notch from beginning to end. Easy and simple. Pricing can vary by bike type and time use, all in all a couple of hours was about $20. Which is fair given the fun experience I had. Bikes worked perfectly fine, everything was clean and functional. Lock was easy to use. I've been to Venice beach three times and twice before I've tried a different skating rental shop, so this was my first time here. The place I usually go to closed at 4:30. So I had to find another place that opened until later since I wanted to skate around and watch the sunset with friends in town visiting. It's the winter time so the sun now sets at 5 PM so most shops do close early, but not this one. This place has great hours! They are open late even past sundown which makes it very convenient. The location of the shop is a great starting point at Venice beach. I rented roller skates for $8 an hour and was able to skate to the Santa Monica pier and back while still enjoying the many surrounding areas. There is a 10 minute leeway after your hour of rental. I believe they only go by 1.5 hour and not 1.15 hours. The men at the shop are quick to get you your equipment. I'd recommend this place to anyone. I'll try coming back the next time I'm around. read more

I took my family to rent bikes. They gave us a lock and told us to take a picture of the combination. When we stopped to lock the bikes and had a hard time opening the lock. When we tried to lock the bikes secured, we could not get it to lock so we had to move the numbers around and had to give them a call so they could dome down but we were able to get it locked. When we came back to continue our ride and unlocked them, the lock would not open and again we had to move the numbers around to try to figure out if they gave us the right combination. Over an hour until we finally got it open. When we came back to the shop and told them about the issue and how can they remedy for the time loss, they came back with "you brought back a defective lock and now you have to pay for it". I told them if they know about this issue, they should make the customer aware and not give them faulty locks. They kept insisting it was our fault. Well, then give me the lock and it's mine now if you're gonna charge me $20 dlrs. They said they wouldn't give us our ID back because they have to spend hours trying to figure out the combination. 1 minute it took for me to figure out the new combo which was only off by 1 number. They said I should have read the contract. I said, people in good faith sign the contract believing them all its good. But if this is an issue before hand, let the customer know. Also, if you have faulty locks then get new ones without this issue. It's a good scheme for them to fraud people for an extra buck. read more

When we got back to the shop we explained to them the situation and how will they remedy the time lost. They told us it was our fault that we changed the combination and we would have to pay $20 dollars extra for changing the combination. I told them this was a fraud and bullshit they pulling that on a customer. If they knew of this issue they should explain that to the customer and make them aware. They said you should have read the contract. Ok. But in good faith a customer will not know of those issues and they should be advise. They try to say anything brought back defective the customer will have to pay. Don't rent from this place and if you do be aware of this. read more

Booked a surf lesson after being encouraged by a pal, but in need of moral support so went as a twosome. She had been twice before - much less daunting for me. Felt very comfortable with the instructor who was well aware of our inexperience in the water. But the main things to report is, OMG the adrenaline rush!!! - exhausting, but so exhilarating. A wonderful attitude by the instructor who was very encouraging. Apart from having a fun time, it gave us a new-found respect for the power of the sea, being in-tune with nature, and was an ideal stress-reliever. Try surfing at least once in your lifetime. No regrets, and very eager to try it again. HOT TIP: go mid-week on a Wednesday for fewer tourists. If you're a first-timer, aim for the quieter times of the week - extra space to do your thang!
