I've visited this little pier/boat harbor a few times when I was working on Molokai. I can see why this pier/boat harbor is important as it's strategically located right across the street from Kaunakakai town (the main town in Molokai). The pier/boat harbor is open for the public to see, with the exception of the Matson/Young Bros area which is secured. The Molokai pier/boat harbor is clean, and you can actually park in the parking lot to enjoy the views from the pier/boat harbor. I've seen folks fish off of the pier/boat harbor, as well as seeing some folks swim in the adjacent area leading into the pier/boat harbor...........I also heard that the ferry that runs from Molokai to Maui, the Molokai Pier/Boat Harbor is the place you need to go to catch the ferry. A pretty small harbor, but very cool to check out............

The main street in Kaunakakai heading makai leads right onto the pier. It's free and open to the public. There are a few businesses located here: Young Shipping, a tour/dinner cruise company, and fishing charters. It's a boat doc with what looked like private craft. There are public beaches here and there; there are benches and places to walk around. Reef fish were everywhere, colorful in the brown water. Along the main road down the pier is plenty of shoulder parking, which leads to fishing and swimming areas. Near the end is a fixed swimming dock with a slide and boards for jumping; the swimming area is netted off from the harbor beyond. Driving out here offers a gorgeous view of Lanai, Maui, and back onto the mountains of Molokai; it's a must-stop destination when visiting.

They offer various tours, including Molokai Forest Reserve and Anupuka Dune & Mokio Preserve. Now keep in mind that because of weather and seasons, tours may be affected and there is also a minimum number of participants required for the tour to run. I went to Molokai in February 2024 and I was looking to do both of the aforementioned tours, though I could not do the Molokai Forest Reserve that day because of bad weather and muddy conditions and also because I was the only one signed up that day, so thankfully I opted for the refund in those circumstances. However, I was able to go on the Anupuka Dune & Mokio Preserve tour the following day because weather conditions were more favorable, though our tour guide Ally came across some really muddy conditions at times when driving the 4x4 van to and from the preserve in West Molokai. Overall, Ally did such a wonderful and fine job of navigating our group and explaining the history behind the preserve as well as allowing us to get off and explore the region and capture lots of photos and memories. We even stopped at Pono O Hale Beach and Halena Beach towards the end of the day to explore and/or relax for an hour! Anyways, I hope to be back soon to do the Molokai Forest Reserve tour with this organization (I'm told the summer months tend to be better times to do this).

We were a party of six so flying over via helicopter would have been way too expensive for our budget. We began looking at chatering a fishing boat and found Captain Joe to be the most affordable at $550. We paid cash and he definitely deserved more so we gave him a good tip at the end of the trip. He was incredibly easy to work with and we had no problems booking. He did suggest we call in to confirm with him the day before since the water can be pretty rough on the north side. We were very blessed the weather was great and we went to bed early to be ready for our 8 to 9 hour trip the next morning. We met him at the Kaunakakai pier at 5:30am. He was easy to find. The second boat on the right. We packed our own breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks with plenty to share with the captain since it is the Friendly Isle after all. He put out some poles in the water and we trolled as we went. We specifically wanted to see the cliffs and would fish along the way should we come across a school. The north side isn't known for fishing so I didn't expect to catch anything and was overjoyed when my two kids were able to bring in a couple of Mahi at the same time just an hour into the trip. He was very humane and didn't club the fish over the head or anything. He just layed a wet towel over them to calm them down before putting them into the cooler. After that my kids were on the constant lookout for more. When the trip was over he expertly filleted one for us and we got some Mahi steaks to take back to the hotel. We let him keep the second one since we couldn't eat that much on our trip. The boat had more than enough room for us and had an area for us to take turns taking naps. There was a portable toilet but no one had to use it. Thank God. Captain Joe wasn't overly chatty as some captians tend to be. He was very aimiable and pointed out some points of interest and answered questions but was also content to let us enjoy the trip comfortably without the need to constantly chat. He was extremely knowledgeable and answered all our questions. He has extensive experience as a seaman and we were content knowing we were in good hands. The water was like glass so no one got sick and we were able to view multiple waterfalls! It was just an incredible lifetime experience. If you ever go to Molokai you must book the Alyce C and see the stunning cliffs. Pictures just don't do them justice! The next time we go back, we'll be booking Captain Joe again and focus on a deep sea fishing trip and catching more fish.

I did not book the flight, so I can't speak to that process, but our experience from airport to airport and back again was excellent. There isn't a big sign for Pacific Air Charters, but the building is clearly marked with the address, so we knew we were in the right place. Lots of parking out front on a Saturday morning, even though the spaces are not all striped. Lucy met us and escorted us up to the office and restrooms. We hung out with complimentary tea/coffee while our pilot finished up his final checks. She was very gracious and welcoming. Lucy then escorted us down to the aircraft, and I was pleasantly surprised - twin-engine Piper Super Chieftain. Some in our group were a little nervous about such a small aircraft but it was a lot nicer than some commercial planes I've been on. No TSA theatre, no lines. Our pilot came out to greet us - his name was Ace and he was a total Captain-Sully type. Very professional and left me feeling like we were in capable hands. He did a quick safety briefing for us, then placed us row by row for weight and balance. Every seat had headphones, which was good for noise reduction, but aviation geeks will enjoy listening to the radio communications with the tower and other aircraft. We had a quick taxi and takeoff, and we had such a smooth ride. Visibility got worse later in the day with vog, which was a bummer, but we even got to chase a couple whales in the morning on our way over to Kalaupapa. Fast flight - 25 minutes, max. Ace hung out at the airport while we did our tour, which was surprising; I figured he'd run back to Honolulu or at least go topside Molokai. But, when we were finished that afternoon, we did a repeat safety briefing, sat back in our assigned seats, trundled down the runway and we were off. We had a lot of sea-breeze convection and lightning over Oahu, but it wasn't a problem, thankfully - we stayed out to sea and came in from over the water instead of a town-side approach. The headsets were a bit static-y on the return, I suspect as a result of the weather, so I couldn't hear as well. An overall great experience. We filled the plane with 9 of us, and I thought the price was very reasonable per person, considering we had charter service to an isolated airstrip. Will definitely consider them again if travels warrant!
