I love the MoMA and there are plenty of awesome designs at the MoMA store that showcase artists or art displayed in the museum. There are so many options to pick up a souvenir from your museum visit! The location of the store is split in three locations, two inside the museum itself 1) directly to the left and down a floor when you enter from the 53rd Street entrance, 2) upstairs on the second floor of the museum toward the east side of the building closer to the second floor museum cafe, 3) directly across the street from the 53rd Street entrance on the south side of the street. They all carry the same items with varying degrees of overlap, the second floor store is the smallest, the store across the street carries more home furnishing items. From postcards, posters and stationery, writing tools, kitchen serving ware and utensils, toys, jewelry, accessories, home decor, books and other printed media, expect all sorts of creative designs. While I want to support art and artists, I think the only downside is that prices are definitely on the higher side, in general NY tourist attractions tend to upcharge so much for even the most basic items (like $8 magnets). read more

I've been a fan of the MoMA Design Store for a while, but a week or so ago when I had just finished a meal at The Modern, I popped across the street to do some shopping at the MoMA Design Store. I hadn't been in person before (I have done some online shopping), and it's such a fun store to browse: art, tchotchkes, technology that looks cool, home goods, kitchen goods... I found a souvenir for myself and a gift for a friend whose birthday is coming up. The staff were really friendly, and they offer items at varying price points (don't avoid stopping in because you think it's an expensive store). Overall, it's just a really fun place to shop - lots of surprising, fun, gorgeous items to choose from! read more

The MOMA actually has 2 gift shops. The elegant main one is located on a sublevel of the main museum and features a cool stairway or glass elevator entry. I spent a lot of time in there, looking at books, exhibit-specific items, and some of the MOMA Design Store items. There were a lot of people here, but "traffic" flowed well and I never felt that I was always running into people. The MOMA Design Store is across the street. It features more cool stuff that I really didn't need or know where in the house it would go. I also figured I could order anything on line later if I felt there was a missed opportunity. This store seemed smaller and I was definitely running into people at almost every turn. If I can't linger over a potential purpose, I quickly move on. That may be a missed opportunity, but Gayle thanked me for leaving the MOMA design store with limited damage. read more

I didn't get anything this visit, but I did get items from the museum store across the street, many of them are the same inventory like the games, tote bags, t-shirts and umbrellas. I have to admit... sometimes I may enjoy the design store / gift shop more than the museum itself...lol - my excuse is that gift shop is like the condensed version of exhibitions (like the SparkNotes) and a lot times with even more creative / innovative spins on those pieces. This design store has a lot of interesting and cool items. Great place to shop for gifts (and in my case, a lot times it ends up being shopping for myself lol). I have been a MOMA member for 10 yrs. Just received my renewal to my surprise for $110. I paid $85 last yr. Apparently the Global membership is no longer being offered. I will not be renewing the membership. What a shame they are willing to overlook the past Global members who basically do not live close by or in another state entirely. The rep. I spoke to said there was a substantial number of Global members who are affected. Since I live 3,000 miles away; I purchased the membership solely for the MOMA store. Will miss this for xmas gifts. There's really not much here. A few cute little novelty items, but I've read descriptions of this place that made it seem like a mecca for home decor, and that, it is not. My best description of this store is a combination of Sharper Image, Brookstone, and an Art Museum Gift Shop. I rarely buy anything in these gift shops. One reason is I don't need more stuff. The other is that it's expensive. I typically tell myself it's a good cause. I rationalize I'm getting something for a donation. If you're going to MoMa anyway you may as well stop in at the store. Best way to describe the MoMa store is that its somewhere between a toy, gadget and creative art fun store for adults, kids and adults that still have a kid somewhere inside. The store offers something of a intersection between functionality and art design. You need a neat gift or want some cool looking like item like lighting, furniture, or something fun for the kitchen you can find it here. Plus other stores don't have some of the items here because MoMa has a reproduction license from the artist after displaying their art at the museum so many are only available from MoMa. The sore is not very big and would take 5, or 10 minutes to check it all out. If you not in the area they sell many of the same items online. And if you know someone that works at MoMa they can get the item at a discount for you. read more

Love this place! A must see if you're in NYC. The actual museum is closed due to the pandemic , but I was able to visit the Design Store and Museum Store. All distancing protocols were followed and temperature checks were conducted. I purchased two gorgeous Yayoi Kusama keychains and a Takashi Murakami flower pillow. These items are super hard to find outside of Japan. They also had a large selection of home decorations, books and art galore. Oh and plenty of Issey Miyake handbags. Staff here is super friendly and helpful both in person and over the phone. Looove this place! read more

Mixed opinion. Great inventory diversity. Physical shop at the museum is inviting. Members get discounts. Counter staff was very helpful in locating items, but neglected to relay critical information - anything shipped from the shop must first be transferred to the warehouse. Follow up with customer service at warehouse promised tracking info which was never shared. In the end, my gift was timely delivered, but was not worth the unnecessary aggravation of bad information and limited customer assistance. 5 stars for inventory. 4 stars for store staff. 2 stars for false promises at warehouse; and, 2 stars for failed tracking data. Coming to the MoMA design store is kinda like going to see "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" on a midnight madness double bill right after the original "Valley of the Dolls". You have the feeling the psycho-weird 1971 movie has something to do with the classic 1967 trash wallow you just saw, but it doesn't feel much like a sequel. Similarly, the design store is not a MoMA sequel either, more a stylistic evocation of its namesake museum across 53rd Street (photo: http://bit.ly/10zwR0e). Sure, it's modern, and many of the items available for purchase can be considered artful, but it doesn't make me want to scream, "NEEE-LY O'HARA!!!" in a back alley in a day-glo mini-skirt and with too much mascara. That's probably just as well since I don't look good in fluorescent colors. Besides, the store stands on its own as a shopping destination for both the wandering tourist and persnickety local alike. You can peruse items that complement MoMA's art collection such as print reproductions and oversize coffee-table books. The real draw here, however, is the über-contemporary home décor. The museum is beautiful and I highly recommend. The store is solid, but I think the tourists mark up is very high. If you need a souvenir there are a some things to select from, but it is mostly high end items for your home and decorating, many that can be ordered directly from their online store. read more

This was a sure stop when I used to take a monthly visit to the city, and I made sure to include it this time around on my short trip. Used to love getting their catalog in the mail, and they had THE BEST selection of Christmas cards. This was back when people still actually sent cards, so it was extra special to hear a 'thank you for the cool card' after receiving. Even though I got stuck in the rain on my last days excursion, the Moma Design Store still stood out like an oasis in the downfall. I was happy but somewhat dreading it since I seemed to always find something to like (and buy) when I visited here. Although it's been almost nine years since I was here, the layout was still the same, and the gifts were were situated easily where you could browse or pick up and play. I did end up with a purchase, but dare I say I did well with a reasonable one, as it was on sale with an additional markdown. And, it survived my flight back in my carry on bag. My recent visit to the store proved sad. the I discussed a problem with my on line order with the gen. mgr. , he discussed that the store and the website by the same name, were 2 different operations. Discussion continued & became confrontational. He admonished me and instructed me: "Please don't me aggressive with me". I was not at all being aggressive, only disagreeing with their business policies. A customer should never be reprimanded in this case. read more

This shop is still part of the MOMA-but is down the street in a building separate from the actual Museum of Modern Art. Very unique items for the home and much more expensive. I loved the Acrylic vase that uses the sun's rays to manipulate the color at the base of the vase. There were also designer Skateboards in a limited quantity aligned with the American Artist and Graphic Designer Robert Rauschenburg Exhibit currently on display in the Museum titled "Among Friends." read more

Desperate I reached out to see if they had it in-stock. I ordered gifts WEEKS ago for my Grandchildren and MOMA Customer Service just figured out that the AM EX authorization had expired. This is absolutely appalling and very disappointing. Would I have gotten better service had I been a MOMA member? Did it occur to anyone that I should have been given the option to cancel the order before today? Further, a real time "out-of-stock" message on the MOMA website would have been helpful especially at this time of year. At the very least this is very poor customer service. At worst, it just plain deception. For shame. And to top it off, the Customer Service Team wanted me to take time out of my busy day during the craziest time of the year to call and try to straighten this out. As far as I'm concerned ONLINE SHOPPING is supposed to make the shopping process easier not more complicated. There will be no call from me AND I will never order anything from MOMA again. This store has its own yelp listing. Very cool. I have picked up a few things here over the years that are great. Some ribbon vases that still look great. Around the Holidays they have nice sales on leftover holiday cards. Worth it, the cards are fun and unique ones. They also have other unique and good looking things. Some purses, some kitchen items, notebooks, games, cool cheese sets, glass cookware (watch those pasta cook), and so much more. They have a very good website in case you need to buy from afar. You can pop in here without visiting the museum which is great. No parking. read more

We had a really kind docent who lead us through without being snotty or pretentious about the exhibitions. I particularly liked the selections in the gift shop section, which had super cool, unique finds (besides, who likes getting toasters for x-mas?) and a decent price range from what I could see. Fun and design-interesting place. Definitely worth going if possible (and safe). Through the years, I've bought some stuff there that I still like (a watch, a small carpet...) But a lot of the stuff is essentially pointless clutter. May make you smile but you don't need to carry home. They also have fun designs of everyday items -- sometimes overpriced but potentially useful, and some higher end items. If you order on the web be aware there are currently DELAYS in shipping. My order was a gift, and wasn't cheap, and I paid for shipping, and the delay was frustrating. Customer service explained. I didn't even get a confirmation. Shipping label notice a full week after my credit card was charged. Then informed of a 20 per cent sale six days after I ordered. Not tragic, I agree. Just sayin. read more

Sure, the items the museum store are incredible and anyone would be a proud owner of anything they offer. It is disheartening that customer service and the employees that try to pull it off as well as their level of fulfillment promise is rather unfortunately childlike and not even close to any kind of service. In fact, I don't think they have any experience in retail or customer service whatsoever! I ordered many items to be mailed to me across the country. One particular item, which just so happened to be my favorite item out of everything I purchased that day, was on backorder, and the website promised me I would receive the item when it was back in stock, sometime in the fall of 2020 (I can't remember the month but it was Sept. or Oct.) So for 3 or 4 months it was in the back of my mind that these beautiful cloud plates were on their way to me. Time rolled by and it was around the time they should have arrived so I called their customer service, and Doreen answered, who was polite and mentioned she would check in the morning. Doreen responded via email saying, "...due to the fact that they were back ordered, your order was cancelled and you were credited the cost." Now, I'm thinking the term 'backordered' is used for a purpose, and the retailer does not decide to cancel the order, the purchaser does. So I actually had to inquire when it was cancelled and where I was credited and how much. Doreen responded not by answering my questions, but by telling me, "I reviewed your order and see that item 146928 was cancelled due to a backorder situation. We issued a refund when the item was cancelled. This item is now back in stock to order on the MoMA website. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused." So I responded saying that she did not answer my questions at all, and that if she couldn't answer my questions she still needed to fulfill my order, or return my money and prove to me she returned my money, otherwise she would be responsible for theft, and that she should realize this. I have not heard back from her yet. I will update this accordingly, if she is in fact still employed there. read more
