Some of these reviews refer to "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurants. I've been to "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurants, but will no longer eat at them. My stomach can't tolerate the way those restaurants prepare their foods. I'm Mexican, and this is Mexican food the way I remember, growing up. Being a senior citizen, everything was natural back then. Momcorn is authentic, and healthy. The food is really delicious. The only con for me were the tamales. I didn't like the food at all maybe because it was delivered. It wasn't hot and I had to wait almost 2 hours after ordering to get my food. When I ordered my total was $16 even but when the delivery guy came he said $17 something which wasn't right but thankfully he charged me the $16. read more

Hands down the absolute best & most authentic Mexican/Latin restaurant I have been to. The food was delicious. Was upset I couldn't eat more & had to have an "to go" bag with some additional items I just had to try. Just a stone throw from Great America I highly recommend it is tried at least once if you frequent the six flags park. Healthy, delicious & wonderful people. Were personally greeted by both owners & felt very personal on each visit. I have been 3 times now & am sure it is only the first few visits of many more. They are quick on delivery and the food is good. I especially like the cup of corn with the seasoning - you have to try this.

I was not overly impressed. The building is not very nice, and the food was just okay.

The food is great. However, the service my coworkers and I had just experienced, not so much. It took almost 40 minutes for 3 large chef salads, a Torta and a Taco Salad to come out... After waiting for, what seemed like forever, for our food to come out they got most of our orders incorrect. When asked to make a new Torta because there wasn't supposed to be beans, the server mumbled under his breath "uh ya". The large chef salads came out as regulars. And the taco salad had barely any meat, even though "extra meat" was requested. And I believe his name was Silvano, didn't apologize once for the mistakes.. He came back 20 minutes after asking for a new Torta to let us know they ran out of the buns. Not once did he ask if he could get or do anything for us. He offered no compensation or recovery. The cook was missing for like 15 minutes on the phone. It was such a disappointing experience because my coworkers and I don't get to get out of the office often. And we've been here before and loved it. But sadly, I doubt we'll be coming back. read more

I was swindled out of my planned lunch at the neighboring Subway by a female employee (owner I think). This tart convinced me with a sales pitch and guilt trip (following a near stiff arm preventing me from entering Subway) to try the food. Less than impressed is an understatement. Wet diced cardboard wrapped in a tortilla is a fair description of my chicken adventure there. I'd still rather eat a meat like substance stuffed burrito from Taco Bell. My husband and I literally picked up our order 30 min ago and already finished. We're Puertorican and can't find ANY PR food in Lake County. Momcorn has jibaritos which are PR sandwiches so that is what drew us to try this restaurant out. We ordered a steak jibarito, steak burrito w/a side of rice and beans and 2 steak tacos with cilantro, onions and cheese (for my step-mother). Jibarito....VERY disappointing. The fried plantain is supposed to be crispy (ANYTHING FRIED SHOULD BE CRISPY). This one was extremely soggy and fell apart. To me it looked like a bbq pork sandwich by the sauce they had on it. I did not enjoy it @ all. Burrito...Not bad, very small in comparison to all others. Could have been seasoned a little more but the lettuce and tomato seemed fresh. Tacos....First glance, not so good! I have never had tacos from a Mexican place with cheddar cheese, not to mention the melted cheese looked disgusting. As for taste, my step-mother said it wasn't bad but have had better. Rice & Beans...My husband said the rice was bland. Just from looking @ it, it didn't look too good. Was off white and I though Mexican rice was orange?!? My goal is not to put any business down, but I use this review and all others as a chance for the owners to improve. My first visit - I was very pleasantly pleased! I had a pork tamale that came with a red sauce that was very tasty and not "too" spicy - the tamale itself was very moist and flavorful. Also tried the quesadilla with cheese, epazote and jalapeno - a real treat! The corn tortilla was made fresh - no factory tortillas here! Also had esquites, which is basically elotes in a cup - seasoned corn with mayo, parmesean cheese and chile seasoning. Enjoyed everything in my meal. Will definitely go back! read more

I recently went to Momcorn for the first time with my family and it was one of the best restaurant experiences I've ever had. My husband and child loved it. I got three chicken tamales and the steak fajitas to go. The food was delicious and the service was great. This place is right by my work and i was so excited to see something different in the area and couldnt wait for it to open! Once they did open i had to try them out and i wasnt dissapointed at all!! And the Pozole was very spicy which I like but people won't know it's spicy do they should help you out but like I said they didn't care. forget the commercial, the fast food and blandness that surrounds our everyday lives and head into momcorn. There are three parts to me rating a business. Food and freshness, the service, and would I come back? Well I started off with the Longonisa potato flautas. Dressed with lettuce, onions and a slice of fresh cut avocado. Just awesome, the tortilla was nice and crispy and the ingredients were fresh full of flavor. Let that be the window into their food. I also tried their quesadillas and tamales made fresh not like those frozen cooked that you find at tacos el Norte. Secondly the service was more than stellar. I'm a big believer in supporting local business and these guys are spectacular. The environment seems corporate but the aura is mom and pops. Clean cut with a home feel and I love it. I drive up and down Washington Street every almost every day and have wanted to try this place. I thought they sold popcorn, but to my surprise they sold Latin food. so when I finally decided to take the time to go in I wanted to try a little bit of everything so I ordered a taco, a beef empanada, elotes, chocolate natilla, and an horchata. I live in Waukegan so I have eaten tons of Latin food. The empanada was okay. The taco was bland and so so. The dessert I was told was more delicate and lighter than Flan, I did not care for it. And the horchata was watery. I wish this restaurant all the best because I know how difficult it is to run a restaurant. I would just work on adding a little more seasoning to some of the dishes and offering better dessert. I was really let down by the desert it was like eating gunky chocolate pudding with cornstarch. I work in Gurnee and a few years ago when Momcorn had just opened, one of the owners came into my work and gave us free tamales with a card and a menu. I thought the tamales were delicious so I have been eating there ever since! Both of the owners come to my table to ask how the food is every time I have gone in to eat and every other employee that has helped me has been nothing but nice. The food is fantastic and I LOVE the fact that most of it is labeled gluten free or vegan because I have Celiac Disease and it's hard for me to find a restaurant as accommodating and informative as Momcorn is! My favorite dish is the Jibarito with steak. I've had it with Al Pastor as well and it is fantastic either way! Their tamales are to die for, their tacos taste very authentic, their chips taste as if they were cut and fried minutes before they serve them and with guacamole they are delicious and their tortilla soup is one of the best I've ever had! I've also had the flan and horchata and both are fantastic! I will definitely continue to dine at Momcorn! read more

I like that they keep the place really clean. The food is delicious. I actually went there a week ago and I had the beef empanadas and omg it was delicious. My son got the kids taco and he loved it and let me tell you he's a picky eater. The flautas are awesome but over 7 bucks is a little expensive for only 4 flautas the taco plate has more food but is cheaper. The only down side is the beans you can tell right away is canned and it's too salty but other than that I will be a frequent costumer read more

Jibarito al pastor. Get it. It's amazing and greasy but in a good way (mayo and cheese and plantain duh) and one of the best jibaritos I've ever had. I get it regularly. Lately I order through Yelp and pick it up for lunch but damn, it's good. A few times I've eaten there and the service was good each time.
