I love this place. Been climbing here for a long time. Both lead and bouldering. If anything bothers me at this point it's only their inconsistency with the way they rate bouldering problems. From one week to the next you might find that a warm up V0 route is now as difficult as last week's V3. If you thought you were tracking any improvement in your strength and technique as you finally breach the chasm from V4 to V5, well... Climbing is so much just try and try and try, with more fails than successes. Winning takes so much perseverance that gauging your abilities becomes murky and the only way to track that is through the complexity of a problem. So it just doesn't help when the only way to see it can't keep their system straight. read more

My friend and I wanted to come indoor climbing after quite a few years for both of us. We signed up for the class, and Kaleigh was our instructor. She was fun, kind, and patient while teaching us the ins and outs of the safety course. My friend and I had such a fun experience and we will definitely be returning! I'm not an avid climber, but I've been to Momentum a few times and have always had a great experience. The front desk staff is quick to serve and seem to genuinely enjoy their job. On our most recent trip, the staff let us know about the current offer but didn't pressure us into taking it. (Even though it was a no-brainer deal. Essentially two weeks of climber for the price of one?? Duh.) The facility is very well taken care of, the bathrooms are always clean, and the staff is good at keeping the floor clear and making sure patrons are being respectful and responsible. The Momentum in Sandy is quality. Good bouldering for how small the bouldering is. Lots of top rope and lead routes so I can't complain.

I've recently started climbing and had to check out the local gym during my visit to Salt Lake, little did I know that Momentum is a nation-wide brand because they have the same gym in Houston, TX haha. Momentum is overall a great gym with more than enough routes to keep you occupied, I particularly like the top rope route that curved downward a bit at the top. A note for those that might climb at other gyms, like me, Momentum does not provide carabiners or grigris already on the wall. I'm not sure how common this is but my gym has them already on each route. This is a good thing though because I now learned how to tie the climber's side knot and also set up a grigri on my own, something I never had to do at my own gym. It was just a bit awkward during the belay test when I was like, "uhh what knot now?" Overall, I had a good time and would come climb again next time I'm in town. I only knock a star cause their prices are kinda steep (or at least in my limited experience). read more

Momentum is a fabulous climbing gym / chain. I've been here a number of times and the routes are pretty good. I definitely think this is more of a rope gym than it is bouldering gym (and that's both because of layout and also setting style), but the place is great. There's a lot of great supplemental services for members and the gym always does a great job of making new members feel welcome. This place has often hosted the bouldering and route competitions for the state - certainly the best all around gym. read more

Within the last year the Sandy Momentum location has slowly become known for having staff at the front desk that is pretty rude. Any time my friends or I have had to ask a question or try to talk to the front desk staff we are constantly treated like we are severely bothering them. The questions can be as simple as trying to check in a friend with the guest pass and for some reason that is a big inconvenience for them. With that being said, I have only had good experiences from Nicole. She is always so kind to work with and ask for help. The rest if the staff should be taking notes from how she treats members because most of them could use a serious attitude adjustment. My family and friends and I have been coming here for almost a year and a half. I have written positive reviews in the past but unfortunately something needs to change. I hope the right person sees this, we used to love this location. read more

My daughter had a birthday party at Momentum, and she had a great time. She was intimidated about climbing to the top but after lots of encouragement she did it. The staff was supportive of getting the kids to enjoy and achieving the colors on the wall. As a parent, I appreciated the safety restraints, and they showed us how they protect your child. The location was spacious and located right off of I-15. For the birthday party I rate this place a five star, however, the waiver (which is required) is quite long. The facility seemed clean and free of clutter, and the staff was courteous. They also have Parents night every 2nd Friday of the month which seems interesting. As a first timer to Momentum I was pleased with what they had to offer, and I would encourage others to check it out! read more

We are somewhat new to climbing and have never climbed without help from friends and family that are into the sport. During a sale on memberships we decided to get one as it is located close to both of our jobs. We didn't have much experience going in (we still don't), but the employees have made us feel very comfortable and have been very helpful. We now know how to use our equipment well and have a fun time going here a couple of times a week. The treadmills and other gym equipment are great as well and it's nice to be able to watch people climb as you run (it helps me keep my mind off the running). We have had a great time here so far and will be keeping our membership. We also love being able to bring friends on our passes a couple of times a month! Now we just need to convince the friends to get their own passes! The community there are all very friendly and helpful. We tried bouldering out for the first time the other day and received all sorts of useful advice and tips. It's nice to be around people that want to see you get to the top of that route, instead of ones that mock you for going on a route that is "too easy" for them. read more

This place was okay... I came to visit w a friend of mine and the one of the front desk people was on top of it! She told us about the prices and showed us around, suggested what thought would be best for us, overall she did a great job. She did say that there was about a 45 min wait and that was fine with us so we went to go get a bite while we waited. Once we returned a different front desk staff attended us. Now this time we weren't greeted and we were sort of just standing there. Eventually when I asked one of them where we get our gear they ignored me for 5 min then asked me what sizes we needed. When we got the waist harness my friend and I had no clue how to tighten/loosen since it's our first time there! The guy who helped seemed very irritated by the fact that we didn't know. It was almost unwelcoming. Anyways we get to the training part and that was pretty quick to understand. When it was my friends turn to climb he was a bit nervous to come down, so he held on for about 5 mins on the rock, the trainer we had comments to me "honestly he shouldn't have come here if he's scared to get down" and "do you know how long he's gonna take?" LIKE DUDE SORRY I DIDNT KNOW MY FRIEND WOULD FREAK OUT HALF WAY! And if anything this is shit you should be trained for right? I mean kids get scared midway, what's the difference? Anyways once the training was over and we got to do it ourselves we forgot how to do one of the knots, so I went to go look around for staff and found no one at front desk or near our area and we had to ask the climbers next to us to help us out. It was very kind of them to do so but I wish there was like a button to have staff come over that way if there's an emergency you can just push it or in this case if we needed help. Other than that the place is pretty cool I would go again if I had to, but I would check out other climbing locations. read more

Large place, They have a super awesome workout gym and the climbing is super fun here, they have a small bouldering room that's not super awesome just because I think it's not really their focus here but overall I love coming here to top rope climb with friends and it's super easy to become belay certified and learn how to belay. If you need a climbing buddy they also have a pin board where you can find other people that need climbing partners. read more

Had the pleasure of doing a Saturday Climb for the first time with my family. Jaden was our safety instructor when we were getting certified. He was very informative and made sure we knew all the team safety measures to take. The way he communicated was perfect especially because we were new climbers. We saw him a few times after the certification was over and he made us feel very welcomed. I've come to this gym on and off for years since I was in college. Came back a few months ago a couple times and decided to get back into it. then did a week trial and had a horrible experience. Their staff are just the worst from a customer experience stand point. They make everything so difficult to do. We had to do lead certification 4 separate times because they kept not documenting it. So when you're on a 2 hour reservation and 20 minutes (because of the wait) to do lead certification 4 times, it's just ridiculous. My wife was doing box jumps upstairs, with her mask on, the jumping would make the mask slide down periodically. She got yelled at by another member 3 times who was working out like 40 feet away. He finally literally got in her face to the point to intimidate her where I had to get between them. So a mask falling down is unsafe when you're nowhere near anyone but a guy walking across the gym and getting within 3 feet of them, and verbally assaulting a female with his mask down so he could yell properly is totally safe and cool. He went and got a worker. She came up. We told her what happened and she got mad at my wife. Mind blowing. So recap, a guy that's probably 250 pounds, 6 feet tall can come and get in a females face within 3 feet of her, yelling at her, trying to intimidate her, and that's acceptable. So momentum supports their women members being verbally assaulted by guys twice their size apparently. I got chastised on a treadmill cuz my mask kept slipping down. My wife slipped on a hold at the top of a wall and her mask fell off down. A worker told us we'd be kicked out if we didn't keep it on. So many times we got asked to pull our masks up and there's people not even wearing masks. We pointed them out a d the worker refused to do anything. Masks are important. No question. You enforce masks selectively, don't enforce social distancing but don't care about male members verbally assaulting and intimidating female members. Good job. There really isn't a need to be an obtuse a hole about it and given my wife's experience with the other member, momentum prioritizes masks over verbal assault on women. Final straw for us was going to sign up for a membership, I was going to use my Apple Card, which is through Apple Pay so I don't carry the card with me ever. Got told their POS system can't have cards manually entered. What's funny is their form has a spot for your card number and they use ROCK GYM PRO as their POS. Just for fun, I went and vetted out rock gym pro, and sure enough you can manually enter a card on all versions of their platform according to the person I spoke to. Their shift lead is a total snot to work with. They literally lost our business cuz I didn't have another card with me lol. They mentioned a voided check for just a bank draft but I haven't carried checks for 15 years or more. What I think the issue is, is their staff didn't know how to use the software properly and instead of just saying, hey we are sorry we don't know how to do that, they act like smug a holes. They mentioned the voided check after like 4 people were up there involved and after we told them we couldn't sign up cuz we didn't have another card. I looked at the shift lead and told her it was funny that they really do have other options but she's not willing to tell you about them. That's been the experience the whole time here this year. Their staff need to learn emotional intelligence and how to communicate better. Nice gym. Knowledgeable staff. Love how kid friendly it is and my daughters love climbing there. Zero customer service. Zero understanding. Mixed up priorities. They don't take COVID seriously and selectively enforce masks while not enforcing social distancing. They're cool with female members getting verbally assaulted by male members twice their size. Definitely won't be going back to this one. I'd rather go to literally any other gym anywhere. They try to fail you for either ticky tack things or make up things to fail you on lead tests and if they fail you twice you have to pay for their lead class before they'll let you climb. The class is a joke apparently but they don't give you a test. They just let you lead climb even if you may be less safe than people who they fail in tests. Some testers aren't as anal retentive but I've heard about at least several that can break branches with their... Rockreation is better since they care about safety, not being jerks. Also the surface of their walls are smearable kind of like real rock. Momentum is more a yuppy gym where basically all you got are the holds. read more

This place is a well oiled customer service machine; my expectations were set and met from check-in, through training, safety, and their pro-active request for feedback at departure. Very large; can easily accommodate several large groups. Good trainer to customer ratio. The only climbing experience i have is back home in hawaii where you pretty much climb off the side of the cliffs next to the water in your slippers. The hubby surprised me. He told me we were going to ikea, but he brought me here instead! No complaints here since i love freec climbing. But i did get a little nervous as we stood outside in the parking lot. This place made me feel safe considering that i am afraid of heights. We signed waivers and the lady at the front gave us our equipment. We had the explorer package. We met up with the instructor and he educated us on basics and safety. There are walls for all levels, cubbies to put in your things, and other gym equipment upstairs. I didnt do much exploring yet. Momentum is my favorite climbing gym in the Salt Lake area. It's the largest climbing gym around, with bouldering and lots of toprope and lead climbing. The walls seem taller than most other gyms too. Oh, and yoga classes there are great. It can get crowded on Friday and Saturday nights with birthday parties and first dates. I felt like the lead climbing test was pretty typical and fair. read more

My husband and I just bought a membership a week ago, and we are thrilled. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They gave us a walk through tour, and were very patient when I was asking questions. It's family friendly and our 3 year old asks everyday if we can go back to the climbing gym. We haven't tried the yoga classes yet, but are looking forward to it as they have many options and all at different times to accommodate anyone. So far we love it! read more

There is nothing worse than when some of these gyms do not have any competition! They think they own the valley and so they treat their customers like crap. So unimpressed with the employees there and their attitudes. Please somebody build another gym in the area so they will have some competition! Use some of the $109/month I spend towards air filtration and cleaning the sticky walls. Don't get me wrong I don't mind the smell of dog breath, but it would be nice to have a little nicer smell when you walk in. read more

The setting is grotesquely simple. I have never even seen one of their setters wear climbing shoes while setting. It's obvious from the millions of footholds that the setting is at least rushed. It's my understanding that they use the same few setter across all three of their gyms in northern Utah. The movement is boring and the grading is hurtfully soft. Arika and Jake J. are the only ones that appear to put any effort into their routes (and Brett J. Occasionally). Expensive and bad setting, good mileage though . read more

I am a traveling climber; I climb all over the United States. Recently I stopped by Momentum when I was in Salt Lake. Like any gym, we had to take a lead test. I passed but my partner failed the lead belay test, despite belaying in exact accordance with the belay device manufacturer's instructions. Furthermore, she has successfully arrested over 500 lead falls outside, passed the lead belay test in over 10 different gyms throughout the USA; and she has even passed the Momentum lead test twice beforehand (they just never had her name on file). Despite it being crystal clear that she knows what she is doing, they failed her for giving too soft of a catch. Furthermore, the staff member that was testing her lacks professionalism and legitimate climbing experience. I overheard a conversation he was having with another member in which the member requested to take the lead test and he said, "I do not want to test you because you are just going to fail anyway and we have better things to do with our time". Climbing gyms are well know throughout the industry for causing many of the stupid mistakes executed by climbers outside. When underqualified and overly grandstanding staff members are employed at gyms, this issue is magnified. read more
