This review is for their newest location in Waltham, MA. I've been hopeful for a new taqueria to open where there's ample parking and I'm not driving over 20 minutes just to get to the other side of Waltham for tacos. Their tacos are the best that I have had in the area and I've gone to at least half a dozen of local Mexican restaurants looking for tacos similar to ones I've had in Mexico. I love supporting family-owned businesses so this will definitely in my lunch and/or dinner rotation. I went here TWICE in 72 hours - lengua, al pastor, and chicken tacos plus flan dessert are all amazing! Food was amazing for sure. Al pastor Burrito had actual pineapple in it. Most places don't which is a major blunder IMO. Chicken bowl was very good. The chicken was seasoned well. The guacamole was fresh as well. Churros were warm pillows of heaven. There were two to the order cut in half. Filled with Dulce de Deleche & plated with chocolate sauce on the bottom. Monarca is easily one of the best Mexican restaurants around - arguably the best. The birria, al pastor, and tacos gobernador are standouts we come back for again and again. The kitchen appears to be proudly women-run, and the energy shows in both the food and the pace of service. One tip: be specific when you order. We've learned to clearly ask for meat and cheese only in a quesadilla (otherwise it may arrive looking more like a burrito), and to request salsas on the side if that's your preference. After trying takeout from this place and loving it, we finally tried some fresh food here and it was even more amazing! The quality was very fresh and hot, and all the flavors were super on point. I found myself just drinking the consomé that came with the birria tacos I ordered at some point because it was so warm and comforting. It was just a flavor bomb and I was so here for it. We were excited to find a taco place with great reviews so we stopped in for lunch. Inside is small and simple. We ordered birria tacos, chips with salsa, guacamole and a steak burrito. The food is a bit expensive for what it is. $19.99 for 3 birria tacos. Almost $10 for some chips and a small amount of guacamole and salsa and the $15 burrito. First the disappointing part. The burrito rice was overly soft. It had a funny flavor. Definite miss. The salsa did not taste fresh and wasn't very good. The guac was under seasoned and like paste. Now the good. Service was friendly and quick. The Birria was delicious. Juicy and flavorful and although it was pricy it was memorable. Stopped in at this fast-casual taqueria after running a bunch of weekend errands. Didn't really know what to expect but ended up being delighted with the two birria tacos I ordered along with queso and chips. The restaurant doubles up on the warm, soft tortilla shells, which is perfect for dipping into that rich, deep, dark, sauce. (Yay! No soggy messes!) Loved that this taqueria is female-owned, sparkling clean, brightly lit, and has lots more menu options. The ambiance of the restaurant is like a self serve fast food joint. You walk into the door, there's a cashier and open kitchen but then you have to walk inside to look at the menu on the wall. The set up is a bit weird. Seatings set up also kind of strange. Feels a bit messy. Also, U have to walk or stand between ppls tables to see the menu. Tried the beef birria taco which came in three small street tacos, braised beef (not melted in your mouth, a little chewy), lots of diced onion and cilantro which I really appreciate! Kinda stingy on the salsa and sauce portion though. The taste of the beef is just ok. I can tell that it is slow cooked. But taste wise needs some more spice to it. Also had some chips and salsa, and a drink. Chips taste fresh, pretty good portion. Salsa is in a runny side. Green ones have a nice kick to it. As for the price wise, I don't think it was worth $24 for this lunch. Service is fast and the lady at the cashier is friendly. It's good to try it out but I probably wouldn't go back. Wow. We got lucky finding this spot. I love Mexican food and for me it's all about the refried beans. The refried beans were spot on, probably the best I have had in the northeast. It is very difficulty to find the same taste as refried beans from Mexico or Arizona. They also had a birra/quesadilla which my daughter had. It's a must try. My wife had the chorizo taco. The Chicken Burritos I ordered were awful tasted like pure salt as if someone had taken and dumped a salt shaker onto the burrito and the burrito was 90% white rice with dash literally of old dry chicken pieces (I counted two) a few beans and almost none of the pico and salsa's I requested. Literally a rice and salt burrito :-( I'm taking the time to write this to protect anyone in the future from having such a horrendous experience.
