Tasting Flight: $15/person for 5 pours (Appointments available, but Walk-ins are welcome) First visit and we had a group of eight. We barely fit into the tiny winery office, which doubles as the tasting room, but there's a small deck outside offering amazing views across the valley and mountains. Paul poured for us, as well as entertained us with his comedic abilities and his knowledge of chemistry. Unlike many of the Edna Valley wineries, they seem to offer a little more variety (Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Syrah, Malbec, Cab Franc, and of course, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir). The wines were okay, but nothing really jumped out at me. They also carry American and Hungarian oaked Brandy (small & large sizes), which is where Paul's chemistry background comes in. I also saw a Malbec Grappa and Albariño Grappa, but we didn't get to try that. We did purchase a bottle of the Brandy to take home. TIP: Their website states they have "winery cats", and ask you to leave your doggies at home. Overall, a rustic, interesting, small winery which is worth a stop if you have the time. I RECOMMEND IT! Steve Autry is both a vintner and distiller - and applies a "hard science" approach to his nicely-done offerings. Small, unpretentious place where he's pretty much a proverbial "one man band." He loves to regale his guests with technical stuff; he's an educator, actually. Broad range of grape squeezin's and a rather copacetic bonus: Distilled spirits, e.g., grappa. Autry says that he picks the best grapes from SLO County growers, and among the varietals he uses...Albarino and Gruner Veltleiner. The prepaid online appointment requirement comes off as a pretentious annoyance, but they're anything but pretentious. The facility is so small that they really couldn't accomodate more than two couples at a time. On the plus side, you're not likely to get a random bachelorette limo pulling up! The red wines here are certainly hit the "good" level and I'd recommend a visit here if you can fit it in your (and their) schedule. read more

Autry is like an uncut gem. If you look beyond the working wine room you'll find some of the best wines in the Edna valley. Steve, the owner and winemaker, is always a wealth of information on the wines and winemaking. The patio is relaxing and enjoyable, and the wine club is very reasonable. Amazing apple brandy! Obviously I had a favorite but they do have a lovey contrast of brandy in i believe french oak vs Hungarian oak. I didn't taste the grappa but if it anything like his other liquors I am sure it is delicious. I loved to know that the still is handmade a and most definitely will be stopping by their tastingroom in the future for some spirits and to checkout Steves set-up. read more

Shortly after we arrived, Steve Autry joined us, and we had deep conversations about wine and life in general. It was, in our opinion, the best tasting we enjoyed in our two days of wine tasting in the area. As someone who works in the wine trade, I have to say that Steve's wines are impeccable and extremely approachable. Also the price point is very attractive. You might be tempted to drive on past this modest facility on the way to the fancier places in Edna Valley. That would be one of the biggest mistakes of your wine tasting day. We met Steve Autry several years ago while tasting with a SLO local who had visited and built a spreadsheet (!) for over 60 vineyards in Edna Valley. This was on his list for the first day of tasting. We ended up at a simple picnic table on a simple deck next to the end of the SLO airport runway and the Amtrak tracks. Steve was unassuming, friendly, occasionally talkative, and really knowledgeable. He prided himself on his self-schooling to make great wine at good prices. Very little overhead, all the money goes into winemaking. Steve has two distinctions in his approach: he lets the grapes sit an extra week or so on the vine and he lets the wine sit in the bottle longer than other vintners before releasing the vintage. Both pay off big time once you start sipping. We joined his wine club immediately and have it shipped to our Midwest home. Some of the wines are simply gobsmacking delicious. As an example, we recently opened a bottle of his 2017 Primitivo and it was nothing less than a truly great bottle of wine. About it being a 2017: yes, it's got some age on it but we only cellared it for a few years: he currently has 2020 in stock and it's from the same grower. By the time you buy it the wine has already begun to age nicely. Anyway, we immediately emailed Steve and had our wine club supplemented with the 2020 Primitivo. Steve has great focus, tenacity, and craft. Treat yourself to a visit soon! read more

I agree with a recent reviewer who mentioned the tasting fee being unclear/ not waived with purchase, and lack of mask wearing by staff during the covid pandemic. This is the only tasting room I've visited locally that didn't clearly lay out the fee in advance, or follow mask guidelines. The wines are nice, and it's a unique spot under the flight path of the local airport. I would have taken a few bottles home if it made an impact on the tasting fee. read more

The view of the valley was gorgeous, and the wines were unique and full of flavor. We learned so much about wine during our tasting and felt very well taken care of. You know the saying: " don't judge a book by its cover". Well apply that to this winery. It is not picturesque. (Although the view off the deck is pretty). There are no flowers planted or painted signs cheerfully declaring things like " we serve bubbly!" - which seem to be everywhere else these days. Good lord! Anyway. What you do get is delicious, serious wine served by a delightful 'one man show'. We really enjoyed our experience and despite my wife and I having agreed years ago to "promise" we wouldn't join any more wine clubs, we joined Autrys. Every wine was impressive. You can tell that each are made by the same wine maker. He allows the characteristics of the grape to come through. I'm new to the wine tasting game! ... for the past few years, once in a blue moon I get a chance to do it. My taste buds have been "awakened," ... I'm a total novice, but I know what I like! First off, when I'm looking for places to try, I tend to like a more rustic atmosphere when choosing (that's jus me, personally), and Autry Cellars fit the bill perfectly! We had stopped at one other location after Autry, but Autry is my FAV! The tasting was delightful and description/explanation wonderful! Doug was a wonderful host ... I loved the knowledge, he really knew his stuff! I appreciated it. So many other places, you can tell the hosts are just memorizing descriptions, but they don't know the meaning of what they are describing. (I like going into a specialized store and the people selling the product can tell you all about it, and know it)! Well, you will find that here! We also met the owner Steve on our way out! Such a nice man, with just as much of that wonderful passion! This is a quaint small winery with fabulous tasting wines! I truly loved the experience and I definitely had my favorites! Tasting fee was 30 dollars per person. It wasn't waved for a wine bottle purchase. The service was friendly. Cat was friendly. No hand sanitizer or masks being worn by staff or customers. There is better wine to be had in the area. I felt pressured to buy something without being told about any fees waived. It hurt to pay 60 bucks for two tastings even free buying bottle. The owner needs to be more forthright about his fees. He should explain to customers about why he charged. The wine was meh. read more

Before we had even gotten off our bikes, Doug had come out to greet us and began giving us a thorough oral history of the scenic Edna Valley around us. His knowledge of the history and craft baked into the rolling volcanic hills of SLO were worth the trip alone, but the wines were phenomenal! The Malbec was bright and aromatic and the Petite Sirah was big, bold, and jammy, without being too overpowering. I also loved the Zinfandel and the Rose, which are varietals I don't generally go for. The location is gorgeous and the grounds are quaint and unassuming. My girlfriend and I had a lovely time and I will be sure to recommend Autry Cellars to anybody headed up to SLO for the weekend. Cheers! read more

We love visiting wineries..all over the world. Outside the US, one can still find small, boutique wineries where it is just you and the winemaker/owner/relative...Hard in the US..But having a personal wine tasting with Mr. Autry..would be fun and eductional..even without the wine. The wine is made to drink and enjoy.. and a very nice mix of varietals..from both the Edna valley as well as Paso..as he said..you don't have to brave the heat in Paso to taste some of the great, heartier reds grown there. Net/net, these are not pretentious wines..or for long term cellaring..but, they are very, very good.. read more

Picked Autry to visit as somewhere we'd never been to before for the adventure of it. Mr. Autry himself gave us two tastings. He's very very knowledgeable and interesting to talk with. The tasting list does NOT show a tasting fee, nor did Mr Autry say there was one anytime during the tasting. Despite my wife being in the industry and discussing it with him, there was no comp'ing or discounts offered. As for the wines, they were good to very good. The Sauv Blanc was unusually very smoothe which some people will like. The Syrah was excellent but the Merlot was better. ALL there wines are older 2013-2016ish. They are "Drink Now". However, two bottles of Merlot plus tax, plus two tastings was over $50 a bottle. Too much compared to a number of other Pismo / SLO / Edna Valley wineries. Three stars only. read more

An industrial building, not pretty, no...ugly, and a hurricane fence decorated with an American flag greeted us on our arrival. A large metal barn was at the end of a dusty, rocky driveway that was unkempt and made me think we were in Tombstone, not wine country. To further reinforce this feeling, sample stonework displays from the stone and brick business next door delineated the parking area. Strangely it resembled ugly headstones, weeds and all. But beyond the parking lot you can see the gentle rolling hills and vast acreage filled with grapevines. A pretty sight. After a rough first impression, then came the small office-like tasting room with masochistic seating. As much as we hoped this was an indicator that his wine was more important than landscaping and decorating, the wines did not meet Mr. B's standards. He eventually walked away empty-handed while I played outside with a marmalade colored cat. We will keep this place in mind if he follows his dream to start distilling brandy and cognac. That would be worthy of a return visit! read more

We started out our local wine tour at Autry Cellars because we could not find the first destination on our list, Seven Angels. As Doug, the tasting room host and Steve the winemaker told us that was because it wasn't built yet. Lol! This small family winery is up a dirt road. It does look a little industrial, but we came for wine. We were greeted very personably and thoroughly enjoyed the presentation of the wines and some of the wines. The petite sirah was my favorite. Steve also makes brandy now in two different styles. Worth a try! We also asked about where else to go and the recommendations were spot on. Edited to say: just opened the 2012 Syrah! I stopped by Autry Cellars in the late afternoon. It was quite an education. The winemaker is Steve Autry and he really gave me a detailed lesson on oak barrels and brandy making. Steve Autry is the wine maker and the wines are all different and distinctive. A couple nice winery cats round out the experience although they are fairly shy. At some point the enormous high volume tasting rooms that cater to limousines and tour buses can become a tad tedious. Autry Cellars is a distinctly hands-on experience, it's very relaxed and informal, and most important, each time I've stopped by I was greeted in person by the winemaker Steve Autry. Steve is always more than willing to describe his winemaking passion in detail, and in particular his technical approach to creating among others, one of the most balanced and drinkable Pinots I've had. Autry Cellars is located very close to SLO, but the unassuming property is not exactly easy to find, it's slightly hidden down a short dirt road. A hidden gem, you'll be happy after you give it a try. read more

Great wine. Don't let the dirt road going to the tasting room fool you, it may be a very modest tasting room but the wine is spectacular. I was annoyed by two things: 1. As part of the Paso Robles Distillery Trail, nothing about the place was like a distillery. Sure, they make two brandies and one grappa, but we were unable to taste them and couldn't see how they were made. The closest we got was the petite sirah port that was fortified with their brandy. The port used too much brandy and tasted more like a wine cocktail than a dessert wine. 2. The tasting fee needed payment before pouring. Is this a dive bar? This practice is not unprecedented because I've had this occur before, but never in the Paso Robles/SLO area and never when the fee is waived with wine purchase. It made me feel that the customer is not trustworthy and the winemaker doesn't think we'll like the wine enough to buy any. Just pay up front and get out. But the perceptive winemaker was right. We didn't like the ordinary wine and didn't buy any. Final note: The $15 tasting fee covered six wines. The fee is waived with a three-bottle purchase which is rather high for the area, but still better than none. read more

The Short Version: My friends and I were charged $10 per tasting while another person walked in and was charged $5. Whaaaaaaaat? The Long Version: My friends and I embarked on an Edna Valley adventure, Autry was one of the wineries on the list. I love "off the beaten path", small production, "genuine" wineries. Autry fit the mold AND I read online that the tasting fee was $5. My friends and I arrived, we were not rude, we did not smell, and we were not going to skimp out on any bill (please, dine and dash is so lame). We were told we had to pay first, but if we wanted to buy a bottle of wine we could have 10% off, but then wait, someone else at the winery said $10 off. There clearly was confusion, it was abundant. My friends and I were told we had to pay a $10 tasting fee, hmmm... online it said $5. Oh well. We all paid in advance. We're 1 tasting in when another person walks in and asks for a tasting, he was told "$5". I started laughing with disbelief, my friends and I all made eye contact, then snickered into our glasses. One of my friends spoke up, "Why is his tasting $5, while ours is $10?". The reasoning? We came with a group of 7 people. This seems a little backwards to me, aren't deals suppose to be better in bulk? If that were not that case, I'd never shop at Coscto! The tasting room Manager was firm that since we had more people, we had to pay more. This experience was not pleasurable, we all left with a bad taste in our mouths and it wasn't from the wine (which was good). read more
