It is clear Garth has worked hard to create a fun community. The instructors manage to guide you through a serious sweat while maintaining a vibe that says, we are all friends here, even while we are shaking in a holding pattern. The classes are perfectly timed and manicured for a true yoga experience rather than just a fitness class, you still get an intense workout that will rival the others. The real magic happens when they host a community potluck. There is nothing quite like sweating through a class and immediately bonding with a room full of people over who brought the best snack. It turns out that a shared love of yoga and free food is the ultimate recipe for making friends. Between the genuinely friendly team, the fantastic classes, and the promise of future snacks, it is impossible not to love this place.

The Studio: You walk up the stairs and immediately feel like you are in an urban sanctuary above the city. The space is light, bright, and spacious, with warm tones, natural light, and a calm energy throughout. There are two yoga rooms, an infrared sauna room, changing rooms, and cubbies inside the practice space. The reception area includes complimentary tea, a water station, and a simple self check-in. Friendly staff are present if you need anything. The Class/Teacher (Shiva Flow at 12:30 p.m.): After a morning job, slipping into this midday class was an absolute treat! Michelle May personally welcomed me, made sure I had a tour, brought blocks and a strap to my mat, and introduced herself before we began. We started in Easy Pose, where she opened with philosophy on tapas, the internal fire we step into to burn away what no longer serves. She guided us to notice the breath, then the mind, simply observing. Three collective Oms to connect the room. And then we were off...halfway through Sun B, I realized there was no music, just Michelle's voice and the sound of the room breathing together. It was that powerful. This was a strong, continuous flow with options for Crow, Flying Crow, Flying Splits, and creative transitions, such as Tree to Extended Standing Split and Half Moon to Warrior 3 and back again. Michelle continually reminded us to tap into the fire, breathe, and let go. It was that "non-stop, can't stop, don't want to stop, ahhhh, feels so good" kind of yoga. When we finally came down to the mat, she offered hands on adjustments. In reclined Eagle, she anchored my shoulder and gently guided my crossed knees toward the floor (serious Divine release!). We closed the same way we began, seated, noticing the breath, noticing the mind, three collective Oms. This class was FIRE, but conscious fire. Practical Notes: Free parking lot across the street designated for Shiva Yoga Complimentary tea and water station Self check-in system Infrared sauna room Changing rooms and bathroom Cubbies inside the yoga room Friendly, welcoming staff After Effects: I left feeling calmer, clearer, lighter, and very curious about their Power Yoga class. If this was Shiva Flow, I can only imagine . Such an afternoon gift. I will be back!

This training was incredibly transformative, and a huge part of that was Lou and the experience of working in his beautiful studio, Astro Gong. From the moment we stepped into the space, you could feel the intention behind it. The studio itself is stunning -- grounding, expansive, and filled with an energy that immediately invites presence and depth. Being surrounded by his collection of gongs and instruments created an atmosphere that felt both sacred and inspiring. Lou is a true gong master. His knowledge, passion, and reverence for the instrument are undeniable. Watching him play and learning directly from him ignited something powerful within me -- a deep desire to connect more fully with the gong and explore its potential. He teaches not just technique, but relationship -- how to listen, feel, and allow the instrument to speak. The experience inside his studio alone was worth it. It felt immersive, intentional, and deeply moving. I left feeling inspired, expanded, and profoundly grateful.

His method of movement and instruction is high energy, intense postures with fluidity, and a bit of cardio to get the heart moving. I loved that he made us take water breaks, but not enough to bring the heart rate down. His dance breaks kept the energy up when I thought I might give up. It is a class to attend and he is amazing. My second class was on Monday. The structure and outline of the Ali's 5:15 pm Mat Pilates class was great. It's my first time for any Pilates class and I think this was closer to the traditional with a little yoga and cardio. It was intense and strong. The only thing I would have liked would have been alternative moves for newbies in class for some of the more intense plank work with lots of movement. I just did downward dog with a little walk or knee movement or stayed in plank, if possible. But I wasn't sure if that was correct to do in the alternative or if there was another move I could have done. A verbal confirmation or suggestion would have been great. She definitely knows the body and how to push it to the max level of tuning. I will take her class again, but I feel like I have to research some of the yoga/pilates terms to know what position she is talking about. She's an excellent teacher for higher levels. I'll get there one day. They are very different in their instruction, but both highly effective. Thank you both for the challenge.

From the moment I walked in, Payton at the front desk made me feel so welcome. She was kind, warm, and made what could have been an intimidating experience feel comfortable. The instructors, especially Ms. T, were equally wonderful. Everyone was encouraging and created such a positive environment. Unfortunately, during class I started feeling lightheaded and my ears began ringing. I was embarrassed and honestly felt defeated. I ended up stepping out because I knew I needed to listen to my body. Instead of feeling judged, I was met with so much kindness and support. A gentleman outside gave me water with electrolytes and reminded me of something I really needed to hear: that I should be proud of myself for showing up. It was my first class in a long time, and he helped me remember that taking the first step is an accomplishment in itself. What stands out most about North Ray Yoga isn't just the workout--it's the people. The kindness, patience, and encouragement I received turned what could have been an embarrassing experience into one that left me feeling supported and motivated to come back. Thank you to Payton, Ms. T, and everyone at North Ray Yoga for creating such a welcoming space. You made a lasting impression on me, and I can't wait to try again.

The Vibe: A Deep Exhale…read more The message begins outside with a giant reminder: BREATHE. Enough said, right? As soon as I walked in, MJ welcomed me & gave me a tour of the space. As we walked through the studio, we ran into our guide, Joe Kara. Meeting your yoga teacher before class is such a treat, and Joe was just as kind, welcoming, & grounded as MJ. The Guide: Joe Kara's Urban Flow 60 We began seated, grounding into the Earth and connecting with our ujjayi breath before moving through Surya Namaskar to gradually awaken the body. The class unfolded into a beautiful, steady vinyasa flow , one breath, one movement at a time. Joe's music was intentionally lyric-free: down-tempo electronic tracks. Songs like You Wish by Nightmares on Wax carried the practice forward, matching the rhythm of his calm, steady voice. As Joe moved quietly throughout the room, he read the energy of his students. His cues invited us to deepen through breath, alignment, & awareness. With permission, I received two assists during class. The first was in Hand-to-Big-Toe Pose, helping my body soften deeply into the fold. We played with rolling side-to-side in Parsva Dhanurasana (Side Bow Pose), which was new for me and had me feeling it in all sorts of places. Before I knew it, we were in savasana, where I received my second assist: A gentle grounding of my shoulders into the floor. It felt like I was melting into the Earth () We closed seated, observing the quality of our breath, the quality of our mind, & the quality of our spirit before Joe thanked us for sharing our energy, time, & presence with him on our beautiful Sunday morning. Ahhhh, yoga really is that sweet. The Tribe: Moving Together, Exploring Individually There was a nice collective rhythm in the room. We moved together breath by breath, yet Joe created plenty of opportunities to explore our own practice. Want to play with Crow to Headstand, handstands, or forearm stands? Explore. Prefer to stay with the back-bending sequence and his steady guidance? It's all good. That freedom to challenge yourself or honor exactly where you are is one of the things I love about yoga. The Space & Place: Industrial Calm & Simplicity Urban 728 is an unassuming little hidden treasure in Los Angeles. The exterior is modern and minimalist, with a giant BREATHE mural, a threshold between the outside world and the practice waiting inside. Inside, the space feels open, airy, and simple: Clean lines, natural light, polished concrete floors, warm wood details, and a fun retail area (I indulged ). The yoga room itself is spacious and beautiful, with dark wood floors, high ceilings, white walls, and plenty of room to move and breathe. Practical Notes - Parking: Free parking lot. Amenities: Private showers, restrooms, & plenty of amenities. Heat: Warm, but not hot. I came away with a light sweat (a shower is optional - I chose to simply change clothes). Good to Know: From MJ's thoughtful tour to Joe's welcoming presence and mindful assists, there was a genuine sense of care throughout the entire experience. The Sum-Up: A giant wall says BREATHE before you enter. Joe spends the next 60 minutes guiding you back to it. And by the end, you simply feel better.
