On April 1st I had to take me vehicle to monitech because my device was going off randomly and malfunctioning. The device was going off telling me vehiclestart was not allowed. Monitech replaced my device that day because it was malfunctioning and/or defective. They submitted the report to the DMV, did not explain to them that the device was defective and malfunctioning, and because they failed to explain the issue the DMV IS suspending my license. This is neglectful out the very least If not fraudulent behavior. I have complained to monitech several times that my device was defective and had to call in 3 different times and pay 45$ each time for a reset code because the device accused me of not taking a test and k would like a refund because the device was defective and was not my fault. I took my car in to be serviced 3/8/2018 everything was fine I got home sat in my drive way blowing to comply with running test. I passed this morning I got to remove device from my car and I get a code of 4043 stating that I had 2 days to bring my car in. I am suppose to be leaving for a flight today I called their more than lacking customer service to explain my situation and basically they stated I had today to bring the car in or the car would be locked out and I would be charged 35.00. They also lock you out if you can not make an appointment and try to reschedule a week ahead of time. I asked for an extra 4 days on my recall because I will be out of town for a family emergency. Basically I was told Screw you pay me. Monitech has a monopoly on these devices, they have 3 different company names through out the United States and Canada and because of this monopoly you would think they would have a little more accountability. Between the faulty devices, the car battery drains, and lack of customer service you would think they would do better. You can not drive your car and breathe into the device on a 2 way road and be safe in 3minutes (technically its2min) or try to pull over with out being scared for your life. So the next step is to find a lawyer that will help me keep them accountable and ensure that my quality of life is ensured while having this device in my car. This is by far the worst company I have ever dealt with. They scheduled me for an appointment on a day they are closed. I missed work to go to this appointment and then no one is even there the building is closed. Then they charge me $45 to keep my car from locking out. So the entire issue on their end yet I'm paying $45 for an appointment that they missed me. I am immediately switching to another company and I'm never dealing with them again. In theory this business is a good idea. People with drinking problems can be ordered to get it installed or it can be installed voluntarily. Someone in my family had it done voluntarily and it did not work properly. It did not give "random checks". He figured it was because he got it installed voluntarily and there must be two different types of systems. Of course because he was sober at the time he did not think much of it. Fast forward two months later when his demons took over and he was parked at the bar and simply left his truck running while inside drinking. He did not have to blow into it, because he had never turned off his truck. This allowed him to get drunk and drive. Is this Monitechs fault? NO! But the system is flawed and needs to be addressed. When he went for his bi monthly calibration he told the tech about it. The tech had to call for help and ultimately told him it had a "handicap" on it. I made two calls to tell them what was going on and was met by very very condescending remarks. They made me feel like I was just trying to justify his actions. I do feel they should have reimbursed us for the month it did not work but it's not my main goal and understood why the reasons why they don't agree. However, there was a total lack of concern for if this could happen again to someone else. I don't think they believed that it didn't work, though I urged him to call the tech. I just want to let loved ones of an alcoholic to know this is not full proof and to make sure it works properly. My loved one was trying to do the right thing and put safeguards in place. Oh boy.. Where do I begin? I guess I should start by saying this company espouses that they have been getting drivers back on the road "safely and legally" for over 25 years. Within a month of having the interlock installed, part of the machine (hooked into the fuse box under the steering column) fell out of the fuse compartment onto my feet while I was driving, blocking the brake and clutch petal. I almost wrecked my car. I called monitech about this issue, infuriated with the negligence/improper installation. Monitech advised that they would send a service technician out to fix it, however, if they found that I had tampered with the device in any way, I would be fined. Further, if nothing was found to be wrong with the device, an $85 service fee would apply. Seriously? How can a company even suggest that this was my fault after their negligence nearly caused an accident?? After securing the device again, the service technician told me I would not be compensated for this beyond a simple repair.. I asked my attorney how we should proceed and he told me I should have wrecked the car because I didn't have a chance of winning a lawsuit against a company like Monitech. Further, the interlock malfunctions all the time, especially in cold weather. It requires a "warm up" period of up to 4 1/2min before you can blow. All the while, it draws power from the battery. After the interlock killed my battery twice during this warm up, I replaced the battery, thinking this would resolve the issue. A week later, my car wouldn't start. I had the battery, alternator, and starter tested at Autozone (where I purchased the battery) and was told all are functioning properly. I called Monitech again to resolve the issue and was told they get a lot of calls regarding these kind of problems during the winter and that I should try disconnecting the unit at night or when the car sits for long periods of time. I accidentally disconnected the unit without going through the proper disconnection protocol. This produced a recall code. The company then informed me any time I disconnect the device improperly, it's a "program violation" and I was to be fined. Even though it was an accident and they told me to disconnect it. Furthermore, this has not resolved the issue with my car. It still kills the battery. I called again telling them I'd had the battery, alternator, and starter checked, all are functioning properly. They asked if I'd tried jump starting the car yet. Really guys?? I told them I had to jump it every time I try to start the car. Again, they offered to send a service technician out to take a look at it, but if they found that there was nothing wrong with the device, I'd be charged with an $85 service fee. I declined this service, not wanting to risk incurring an additional fee only to have the problem not resolved again. The technician also suggested I take it to my mechanic and that they would probably find there is something wrong with my car.. Now, I drive a very reliable Honda Civic and have owned the car for five years now. I've never had a mechanical or electrical problem with the vehicle in five years. However, Monitech is confident there is something else wrong with my car, not their device. I could go on for days, but these have been the most egregious issues Monitech has caused for me. I don't mean to sound like a martyr, but no one should have to go through this.. No one should have to jump start their car every time they need to go to work. Further, customer service and satisfaction should be of paramount importance to any company, but not this one. Monitech is the exception because they will continue to have business and make money no matter how unhelpful and incompetent their employees are because their entire customer base are DUI offenders who are required by law to have an ignition interlock installed. The whole thing is a total racket. It's legalized extortion; a scam to make money. In my experience, this company is truly terrible at what they do and consequently should be shut down. If they did operate in the free market like everyone else, they'd probably be out of business. I've never experienced anything like this in my life, and hope to never have to again. Never have I seen a company so blasé about feedback/customer complaints, so negligent to safety and proper operation of their equipment, and so apathetic about good business practices.
