Crooked... brakes replaced because of a failed inspection. Never showed me any of the parts that failed. - Once I drove the car home, the car began vibrating when idling in drive (at a stop light). When I called, they never asked about the services I had done, nor brought up my invoice to check who and what was done and when it was completed. They just insisted that it has nothing to do with the work they had done. The car was never test driven accord to my invoice. I had to speak to the manager (Steven Legrand). Never provided any opportunity to bring the car back in to inspect the work done. Suggested I bring it in for a diagnostic which is 80$. I should have read into he fact that they have a 2 star overall rating. Poorly managed and are not a customer first operation. $1300 down the tubes to as I have to take the car to a more trusted mechanic. The Technician was A. Walsh. read more

I went in to get 3 new tires put on my car and when it was finished getting serviced one of my sensors was out. When I asked about this, they told me it would go away in a few days. A week goes by and the sensor light doesn't go out so I call and they said they would order me a new sensor. I also took it in to get my Pa state inspection done and my car passed of course. The day after I had my inspection done, the same tire the sensor was out on went complexly flat. I went back to the location for a new tire and i was ordered a new one and told I had an appointment for yesterday which was Tuesday. I got there and was told there was no appointment made for me... I was there about 2 hours before they put my new tire on. I asked about my sensor when I was there and was brushed off for another customer and they told me they would give me a call. I had a terrific experience with Monro Auto. I had a bad one at Mavis-drove right over to Monro and was immediately greeted by Steven (the manager). He had my car on the lift in 5 minutes and diagnosed in 10. Told me the car would take about and 2 hours. The did not even have the part there, and my car was still ready right on time. I would recommend this place highly. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of some of the other ships in the area, but what it does have is great customer service and quality work. read more

Recently brought my pilot in for an inspection only to be told it failed due to poor brakes/rotors and master cylinder leak. None of those things were problematic but I was told it was because my front brakes were NOT WORKING AT ALL. provided a verbal quote of over $500, ripped off inspection sticker and left me in a bind..... Fortunately, I have an honest mechanic who looked it over the next day only to find NOTHING WRONG, and it passed inspection. Warning: This place is a danger to drivers. We took our car into the Vails Gate location for breaks, they were supposed to do all 4 breaks. Months later we noticed the breaks seemed weak so went to have them look at again, they said I needed new front breaks bc those were not originally done. So They do the front breaks and once we started driving noticed a squeaking sound, we took it back to have them check the sound, they supposedly replaced them yet once again but after driving again the squeaking sound was still there. Fed up we Finally took the car to a more reputable place. Turns out the back breaks they did months ago were put on wrong and could have caused us to have a serious accident. And ironically the squeaking noise (that we addressed twice to no avail) was actually from the front brakes they put in not being lubed at all. Having to look further into This squeaking noise actually saved my family from driving in a car with faulty breaks all due to their careless work. Went in for an oil change and inspection. Was told my rear brakes wouldn't pass and it would be $250 for new ones or $150 for the cheaper ones. I said that was weird because I had everything on my car fixed awhile back. He said the front brakes looked new but the back ones didn't. I said I couldn't spend the money because of Christmas. He became slightly less friendly. My friend talked to her dad (former mechanic) and his best friend (current mechanic) and they said they would do it for me if I just bought the parts. I brought my jeep renegade in there for an oil change New York State inspection and tire rotation and told them to check my fog light because it wasn't working. I was very happy at first because it only took a half an hour.. I had some errands to do so I rode around and I looked at my inspection sticker and it was the same as when I left so that means they did not do the inspection. I drove straight back there.and told them they did take it right in. but for the fact , they didn't do it in the first place cost me another hour of my time. I got home I looked at my rear passenger tire. I noticed they didn't rotate my tires at , I got a brand new tire on the rear passenger side and it was still on the rear passenger side. Apparently they don't want to do any work. I did actually lift up the hood on my jeep to make sure that they change the oil which they did. That's the only thing that they did do and they didn't check my fog light either. I will never return there again. read more

Female family member purchased 4 brand new tires about three months ago. At time of purchase, Mavis claimed rotors, pads and calipers were bad. Quoted her about $1000 for repairs. I personally replaced rotors and pads myself after that day. Calipers were fine. They opened and closed. Enough said. Went for the first "free" tire rotation. Drove fine until then. After rotation, bad vibration began as the vehicle left Mavis property. Brought vehicle back and left it. Called back to say vibration was caused by bad rotors, pads and calipers. When I told them pads and rotors were replaced, again blamed bad calipers. Knowing the calipers were fine, I told them I'd pick the car up and replace the calipers up myself. Miraculously, the vibration disappeared upon picking up the vehicle. Perhaps previous work was "corrected" once they knew they weren't dealing with the average customer. Took to another location, just to make sure tires were balanced correctly. Two wheels had no wheel weights whatsoever. Can't recommend this place to anyone. They seem to prey on women or the perceived ignorant. read more

This place is a rip off joint of the highest caliber. Long story short, my son brought his car yesterday for an oil change and an inspection. He was given a $500+ bill to make fixes or his car would fail. Took car around corner th Valvoline, car passed he only needed widshield wipers. DO NOT USE THIS AUTO SHOP. Here's what happened: 1. They charged him for 5 qts of oil. However, per Honda maintenance manual the engine oil capacity with filter is 3.5 qt. http://news.honda.com/newsandviews/article.aspx?id=200706052272 We're just getting warmed up my friends, if this was their only offense I would shrug it off. 2. They told him power steering fluid is only 1/4 full and the power steering system needs to be checked. I just checked the power steering fluid reservoir while engine cold, it is filled almost exactly to the max line (there are 2 lines, max and min. Stay below the max line and above the min line and you're good.) Now we're looking at potentially serious money, but keep reading 3. They told him his sway bar (keeps car under control while turning) was missing. Missing! Like it simply disappeared! 4. Finally, they told him he needed to have all his belts replaced, fuel injectors cleaned, coolant flushed and spark plugs replaced or HIS CAR WOULD NOT PASS INSPECTION!!! That's $520 in work, not including sway bar and whatever BS they would come up with for the power steering system. At this point my son just left because they would not do the inspection without the work completed. So this morning, he took his car to the Valvoline oil change place 300 by the Walgreens and got his inspection done, he only had to change the windshield wipers. I guess the Munro guys were so busy figuring out how to extract more money from my son's pocket that they overlooked the windshield wipers. Needless to say I'm contacting BBB Monday to report this but I wanted to warn the people in my community. Edit: Theresa, you people provide a commodity service and you're in competition with countless other providers. What good does it do me to talk to you? You get 1 chance to make a good first impression and you guy just blew it royally. This is the 2nd time I came to the Monro in Vails Gate, New Windsor, NY. The first time, was just for NYS inspection, was great. In and out in 10mins or so. Even recommended another mom there to get her inspection done. Went again on 2/10/23 to get NYS inspection & tires rotated. Inspection was done in 10mins and they tell me, OK, you're good to go. I asked, oh you did the tire rotation too? They said, oh ok, let us do that now. They rotate from front to back, back to front. They were done, pulled my car out of the bay. I paid, and was done. I drove out with my 8yr son in the car. I hear some clanking...I pull into the foam & wash car wash place, down the block. I got out of my car, and a lug nut was out. I drive back to Monro Mufflers and right when I pull in their driveway, my left driver side wheel rolls off and now my rotors are on the ground. They claim they didnt know what happened and that they tightened all the lug nuts. They apologize, put in my spare, and ordered me a new rim from VW. I called corporate and I went back today 2/11 to talk to the manager, and I noticed that my fender is not flush with the door. The manager had told me that that wasnt their fault and that it could have happened before I came. At this point, I was a little frustrated and I may have used a few choice words to express my frustration. It was 100% related to my wheels not put in or tightened and when my wheel came off and my front came down on the concrete. The manager claims its not their fault when it was the result of their negligence in not securing my wheels back onto the vehicle! read more

"I can't o better" and came back with $490.00. I made the appointment for today(10/31/19). When I got home I decided to call another repair shoot to find a better price and did, I'll review them when I'm done but they said the total cost would about $350.00. This was my first visit since I came here years ago for a brake job (when they charged me $1100 for brakes and rotors installed, and kept my vehicle for 2 days despite an appointment to wait). Since then, I've used Monroe as my motivation to learn how to do most of my vehicle work myself. Even though I knew this place is shady from my experience a few years ago, I gave them another shot a few days ago. I needed 2 tires balanced - I even took them off of my vehicle and brought them with me. How much easier could I make it for them? I walked into the office 2 hours before closing. There was only one car on a lift and all other bays were empty. I asked if they had time to balance two tires. There was only one customer in the waiting room. The employee at the counter had every sob story in the book - one mechanic is out picking up parts and won't be back for hours, another mechanic is busy doing an alignment, another mechanic is out sick, etc. They don't seem too energetic here. At least the employee was "smooth-talking" about it though and not rude. Not only is this shop understaffed, it's also a complete dump. Seriously, corporate HQ needs to bulldoze this place and start anew. When I walk into a shop and the first thing I see is filth, my first question is, "If they don't even have the energy to clean up after themselves, what kind of shortcuts are they gonna take on my vehicle?" The people here are so INCREDIBLY HELPFUL! I was travelling by myself from Saratoga Springs southbound when suddenly my tire indicator went on....I stopped immediately at a local Stewart's where a kind gentleman helped me fill it and then directed me to Monro's which was not too far from there. When I got there it was close to 5 pm but the young man behind the counter said he could help me. It was a hot day, and he had a number of other customers coming in and out, but he found the time to bring my car in and serviced it himself! He was friendly and talked me through what he found and the steps he took to fix it (which was just a plug). When I asked for the bill - he told me no charge, which was a real blessing as I had to travel back to NJ that same evening and was running short on funds. My 2002 Excursion broke down 2 hours into my drive back to North Carolina, and this was the only shop within 75 miles open on a Sunday. Rob and the rest of the team diagnosed the problem, helped me find a tow cheaper than my insurance and bent over backwards to get my truck fixed (even calling in someone else to go buy and deliver the part!). Made an appointment at a garage we have used before. First thing he said was how can they say crap is bad without even taking a tire off. Well, we passed inspection. We are getting brake pads. I went to Monro because my check engine light was on and I needed an oil change. The oil change went well but then they told me one of my cylinders was misfiring and that it would be over $550 to fix it. I called autozone and got a quote for the part which was less than $100, they had written it as over $250 and I know they are not paying retail prices for parts. I looked up how to fix and was able to do so in less than five minuets myself. You did not have to lift the car, go into the engine, or anything intensive. It only needed to have the engine cover, a piece of plastic that is easy unscrewed, taken off and then the old part had to be taken out with a screw driver and the new one put in. They wanted to charge over $550 for something that took me, with absolutely no training or technical knowledge 5 minuets and two wrenches/screw drivers to fix. It is absolutely absurd. After I replaced the part I reset the check engine light and everything was good to go. This place is a scam and they are just trying to take advantage of anyone that walks into the door. This place is terrible. I once got shocks put on there, and honestly...they didn't feel any better. I went back a few months later, and they told me I needed new shocks AGAIN!?!?! I told them they just put shocks on, and the guy said, "Oh, okay...never mind." WTH is that about? Either they never replaced my shocks and robbed me or they tried to rob me by telling me I needed shocks when I didn't. Still shady. I decided to go back for some snow tires, because they're very hard to find in my size. I made an appointment, took time off work, and brought my car in. They said they sold my tires to someone else. We were visiting family over the holidays when our taillights and some of our console lights stopped working. The guys at AutoZone recommended taking our car to Monro, and the staff couldn't have been nicer. They were able to diagnose the problem (a faulty fuse) and fix it with one of the fuses they had on hand, all at no charge to us (we did give a little tip to the service tech). They even put the car up on the lift to check the tires and pressure for us since we were facing a 700+ mile drive in the next couple of days. Fantastic service, and a great crew! read more

My dad was up visiting on a Sunday and his old pickup truck was leaking power steering fluid. We called Monro late morning and Alejandro told us he could bring it in ASAP. He let us know they'd do their best to assess what parts might be needed, even if they couldn't fix it that day due to many customer vehicles already in the queue. They ended up staying late and fixing the hose clamp, and my dad drove it home on a Sunday evening! Alejandro was extremely fair about the price when he could have price gouged us, as other places have done in the past. His competency and honesty was incredibly refreshing. I brought my car in for the state inspection. It passed the inspection but then they said my left front tie rod needed to be replaced. That it was very serious and if I braked hard the car could veer off to the right.they estimated the cost at under $300 and recommended I do it that same day. I said I would be back. I went to my regular repair shop during the week and they looked at the tie rod. It is perfectly fine. Obviously I will never go back to this place and you should avoid it too. In August, 2012 I brought my car in for an oil change. I had used Monro for 4 or 5 years with no problem. On this day, they told my my car, with 125,000 miles needed struts. I figured that could be true, so I agreed. (Buyer beware. Check their website! Struts installed for $139.99) They had my car all day and my final charge was $2016.00 for an oil change and struts. The next day they called and asked me to bring car in to "check that everything was okay." I did and they clearly put something on the rear passenger wheel. Never told me what they did, and of course, no paperwork. Two weeks later, I was unable to back the car up without terrible rubbing sound. Returned to Monro. They were going to tell me nothing was wrong until they tried to back it out of the bay. Some kind of "bolt" issue. I pointed out that same day that they had not done the wheel alignment that is a part of the strut work. They aligned the front end, that was the alignment I knew was out. After I felt my car was in good working order I put 4 new Michelin tires on in September. (No, not from Monro.) I had a significant problem with the car handling poorly in any type of bad or slippery weather during the winter. It just didn't hold the road at all. Finally, in March, I looked to see if I could see a problem. I sure could, my new Michelins with 8,000 miles on them had the belts showing through on the outer part of both rear tires. When I had the tires replaced and alignment done I was told the rear alignment was "off the charts" and couldn't have been done when strut work was done. Add the cost of 2 brand new tires and alignment job in March 2013. I have tried contacting Monro executive offices with absolutely no response. Orange County Office of Consumer Affairs does not handle automotive. NYS Dept of transportation will only help if this occurs within 90 days or 3,000 miles. Had I known I would have let them know. Can't get help for a problem you don't know exists. I am stuck with the cost of their incompetence. So buyer beware. Do your homework and check what a fair price is for any service. Insist on paperwork for any incidental "checks". And don't trust anyone at Monro Muffler Brake Service unless you have money to burn. read more

My wife took her 2010 Subaru Outback to Monro Muffler in Chester, NY for it's annual NYS Safety inspection. They failed it because the rear brake rotors had a band of rust on the surface and clearly the pads were not making good contact. Fair enough. They then proceeded to quote $560 for new pads and rotors!!! I do all my own mechanical work, so I simply took the car back, went to my friendly local Autozone and bought premium rotors and pads for around $170 and spent sixty-five minutes installing them in my own garage (no lift to make it easier). So assuming that they would also pay full up retail for the parts (doubtful) they're charging me about $350 for the LABOR... they post their shop rate at $62.50 per 1/2 hour (a RIDICULOUS $125/hour; about what a dealership charges in this area). This means they were proposing to charge me THREE HOURS labor for a job that I could (and did) do on the floor at home in about an hour. This amounts to theft pure and simple and I will not be going back there. read more
