I went in to get my hair colored to my natural root color (light ash blonde) after almost a year of grow-out. Bessie swindled me into an Olaplex treatment without telling me it would cost extra, which I absolutely didn't need after a year of grow out. She then dyed my hair literally coffee brown, (I have bright blonde hair) which ended up washing out red. I'm livid about the whole experience because my hair is trashed from multiple color corrections now, and the most uneven "thinning" cut I've ever had in my life. Bessie complains about her significant other and takes text breaks constantly. She barely communicates to her clients outside of talking about her own negative BS. She's cold and fake, and warms up when she responds to reviews on yelp but that's about it. I'm shocked she's still in business, do not go to this salon. read more

I got my hair done by Kelsey Hardin and after rescheduling me TWICE I finally went. I wasn't acknowledged at all when I walked in, there were no masks worn, AND she messed up my blonde hair. I scheduled a follow up appointment and she agreed to fix it for free, when I showed up she told me she didn't have time for me and basically rushed the process, didn't style my hair at all, and then blamed the mistake on me. VERY unprofessional, I will never be going here again. She was also talking poorly about other stylist in town. ALSO: -my haircut was uneven and I had people comment on it -I parked around the corner, unaware of the parking situation as it was my first time going and i put my car in 2 hour parking. Half way through my appointment I told Kelsey I needed to move my car because I was afraid of a ticket and she said I would be done soon and I would likely be fine (she likely didn't want me to leave my chair as she was RUSHING through my hair). Well, 30 mins later I walked out and I had a $50 ticket. When I told her about it she ignored my initial message and then I brought it up again and she hardly offered sympathy. well, it is understandable that young women do a bad job since they have no experience, but it would be good if they are honest and if they are not capable of doing what the client asks, do not do it or they should be honest and say that they are going to try (this It would already be under the responsibility of the client) RILEY did a job for my daughter, she wanted her hair light and she didn't get it, the only thing she got was wasting three or four hours, she lost her money and came out with the same hair color as with the one that had lousy service, sorry. Gina was lovely, delightful, upbeat. She give me exactly the look I wanted(!), all while making me feel pampered. I thought I made a lot of requests but she was able to do it all in the time allowed. She talks through what you want with you but also remains realistic. She had a good eye and gave me some great tips. Would definitely go again when I get another haircut. Really loved it! I scheduled an appointment with Bavi & she was amazing! She told me she had been at Monroe for about 2 months, but she has lots of experience elsewhere. I got a Brazilian wax, and she made me feel comfortable, safe, and did an excellent job. She made sure I was not in too much pain, was happy with the outcome and she even tweezed some of the stubborn or ingrown hairs. Dang, those reviews are killer, ladies. I feel fortunate that I did not get my hair cut by Bessie then. But these reviews explain why her hair cuts are cheaper than the other stylists at this salon. My coworker got back from her break with freaking beautiful hair. I've been looking for a good stylist in Corvallis, so as soon as I saw her "do" I made sure to find out whose hands had done that magic. She directed me to Jen Schaefer at Monroe Avenue Salon. I heard it was pretty pricey, but I thought I should give it a shot. I got layers and a cut from Jen, who was a complete doll. She was super personable and did a great job with my hair. The only issue is that I don't think I communicated what I wanted very well. I wanted a trim and a slight cut, but she ended up chopping off about 7 inches (Don't worry, I had it to spare. My hair is still shoulder length after the cut). I wasn't so sure about it after I left, but now that it's been a few days, I can tell that Jen really knew what she was doing and I'm very happy with the changes. She's pretty new in town ladies, let's give her some business because she deserves it! read more

What this salon lacks is customer service. I walked in and wasn't acknowledged at all! The owner Bessie continued her conversation got on her computer and then just looked up and said my name. I then asked her about the parking situation and she responded in a very rude manner. I walked out and felt very awkward but I returned. I then sat down and I had my hair up in a bun so I had some knots. She then gets her fingers and tries to pull out the knots by running her hands through my hair. I told her I would gladly do it myself if she would lend over a comb and she said she was able to manage. She continued to yank on my hair vigorously till I told her it was hurting me and she handed me a comb. I was astounded at the lack of awareness that if you pull on someones hair, It hurts! My second time getting lashes and I was so disappointed. The lashes were like popping off and half my lashes didn't even have an extension on them. I spend over 2 hours and received some very poor quality. They offered to correct it but I really wasn't looking to waste another two hours for a bad job. This is a review for my brazilian waxing appointment with Brady. First off, I love that she uses Schedulicity which is so convenient for finding an opening around a crazy schedule. I am so happy that she actually does sugaring rather than waxing. It picks up shorter hairs and is much easier on my sensitive skin. She was quick and meticulous, and checked in with me periodically to make sure I was comfortable and happy with the hair removal. And not to mention, she is super personable. Horrible outcome. Went in asking for them for a tone to cancel out some orange/brassy coloring, and I left with chemical burns all over my head. When i told them it was burning my head they asked me if that was normal.... pretty sure that's their job to know and to make sure my head doesn't burn. They have absolutely no idea what they are doing in there. The lady that i had my hair done hadn't even worked at a salon before and came straight from a barber shop. I now have to pay 250 dollars for color correction back home in Portland at a real salon. Part of this is my fault for getting my hair done there. I should've walked straight out after asking them what products they use and they didn't know. Also at the bowl when she was rinsing my hair didn't know if she had applied a semi permanent or permanent color dye to my hair. Probably things that should be known while working in a salon. I highly do not recommend going here. It's Just a bunch of young girls fresh out of beauty school. read more

This place now has a new addition to their business since this month. Stacey, formerly of Suite 101 Salon, now does nails at Monroe Avenue Salon. I had an excellent experience with her doing my nails today, and am home still beaming at my lovely-looking nails. Here's what put the experience over the top for me: When I picked a color for my nails that I turned out not being all that happy with, she noticed. And, without missing a beat in our conversation, she simply pulled out some other options she had, and did an add-on that fixed my mistaken color choice and made my nails look beautiful. That's excellent service when someone notices your less-than-delighted look and does something to fix it without you saying a word! I highly recommend Stacey. I walked in without knowing even what color or type of polish or shellac I wanted, and I left delighted. I will trust her with my nails from now on. read more

I was just in town visiting a friend and decided to get a hair cut while he was in class, I wanted to cut it about mid chest like maybe 3 or 4 inches. Bessie was so nice and said she wasn't chop happy but once the cut was over most of may hair was on the floor and now is shoulder length. It's not a very good cut and she cut my bangs really short when I thought I said to just trim them. I've been crying for a couple days. I know it's just stupid hair but and I was being brave, cutting as much as I told her to cut off. It's a bad cut on top of it. I never ever leave reviews . But I'm just so sad about how it turned out. Never getting my hair cut again!!!! read more

I wish I had read these reviews before getting my hair done here by Bessie. I also wish I hadn't given her as many chances. The first time she messed up the color I let her try to fix it twice and I ended up just waiting a few months and going elsewhere because I hated it. She blamed it on my hair not taking color well, but I've had my hair colored for well over a decade and never have had an issue. She is. Really nice person and I decided to give her another shot (don't ask me why, I don't know) and I went in with extensions to show her what color I wanted my hair to be, which was the same color I already had in. The one major thing I said several times was that I didn't want it to get any lighter at all. My hair is now bleach blonde on top... Mostly on one side (as my husband pointed out). I am not even going to let her try to fix it this time and I won't bother asking for a refund based on the other reviews I've read. She also overcharged me. I went in for the 10 foils and a haircut special for $55 plus a trim for my 9 year old and I ended up paying $140. Update: Bessie contacted me and offered a refund after seeing my review and she sent me a check for the full amount as promised! read more

I've gone to Kristy since my freshman year of college and I am now a senior and still see her every 6 weeks! Not only because she's AMAZZZING with blondes but also because she's the sweetest and makes me feel so at home in her chair. We could talk for hours and I'd never get bored! She is also extremely punctual and is always ready for me even if I'm early. I've recommended her to 25+ of my friends and none of them have been disappointed. I made an appointment with Gina for a balayage on Friday the 21st, and made my appointment 20 days in advance to be SURE I'd be able to get in before going on vacation. I showed up to my appointment and Gina was not there, after waiting several minutes Bessie decided to call and see where she was. I was told Gina "didn't know" she had appointments that day so she would not be coming, but she would call me to make it right. I've been getting my nails done by Stacy for around 2 years and they've always been great. I have long almond shaped acrylics and I get multiple compliments a week saying how great they look. Plus, she has a ton of colors of polish, glitter, wraps, and more to make your nails look fancy if that's what you're into. Stacy is usually pretty booked, so make sure to make your appointments well ahead of time if you're like me and you need regular fills. Also, I would recommend calling to make your appointment if it's your first one because the time slots online are estimates based on a very basic appointment. Nail art and longer nail shapes will take longer, so keep that in mind! read more

I recently just visited Monroe Ave Salon and had some waxing done. I do really like the salon but I didn't feel taken care of while I was waiting for my appointment, and I waited for quite sometime, I arrived 20 minutes before my appointment and had to wait an extra 15. During this time I was not checked on by any employee. I was a bit annoyed due to the fact that my original esthetician had to change my appointment time to a different time with a different person because she was unable to come, which I do understand we do get sick as humans. During my appointment I did feel rushed as the esthetician mentioned I was her last client before she could go home. This rushing resulted in the area being not fully waxed to have a few hairs left in which I wanted it to be completely gone. If this was the result I was going to receive regardless I would of liked to be informed prior to the waxing. I possibly will revisit the salon but at this point in time I wouldn't recommend it. read more

I get my nails done by Stacey Cummings and she is amazing! I can bring her a photo and she can copy it exactly, but, even better and more often I have just a vague idea and she brings it right to life... my own personal changing art display! Love her, love my nails. She is up to the minute in technique and products; goes to cool shows to learn the latest... it's me time and I get compliments everywhere on my nails!!! Apparently, this salon is only for select clientele. My wife made an appointment to have her nails done, letting them know the specific type of nails she wanted. She drove nearly an hour to get there, because she'd heard good things about this salon. When she got there, she was told that those nails would take too long to do. I've never been there but I sure won't recommend it, based on what happened today. Thanks for wasting my wife's time and gasoline to get to your salon only to be treated like trash. It's unfortunate that Bessie is the owner of this salon. There are other women that work there and have better customer service and professionalism. Bessie put me through a lot of negative experiences. First she used outdated treatments on my hair (4 years outdated). I went in for a relaxing treatment, which is like a permanent straightening treatment for the hair. It didn't work the first time, so I texted her and she offered to redo my treatment. The second time I went in, she redid my treatment and my treatment didn't work again. So i complained a second time. When I texted her about my complaint, she didn't text me back, but the text message said she had read the message. A couple months after I sent that text, it still bothered me that I had paid $200 and I didn't get my money's worth. So I texted her a third time explaining to her my situation. She had told me that she never got a message from me. This is when she told me that she had used outdated treatments on my hair (she used it on me TWICE). She offered to do my treatment a third time and I refused. I just asked for my money back and she said that her policy doesn't allow her to refund money unless they have fixed the problem. I replied to her by saying "but you did try to fix the problem and you used outdated treatments on my hair twice. Isn't that a qualified explanation to refund my money?" She read my message but she didn't reply. I then had to call her to settle the situation and she came to an agreement to refund half of my money and half on a gift certificate toward "other services." Because I had $100 worth of a gift certificate I decided to treat my girlfriends to waxing. When I was ready to pay, the lady who waxed me said that she couldn't accept my gift certificate and that she would take it up with Bessie. Bessie told the lady who waxed us that she couldn't do anything about it and that she made it clear to me that I could only use the gift certificate toward services under just her (Bessie). I have written proof that says I could use the gift certificate toward other services and the gift certificate specifically states "service: ANY." Anybody in the world would comprehend "ANY SERVICE" as ANY service within the salon. Bessie did not specify that I could only use it under HER services. She told me that she had specified it over the phone that I could get a hair cut or something, but she didn't SPECIFY that I could only use it under her services. She told me that the people who work in her salon are "private contractors" and that she doesn't pay them. She told me that it was a "misunderstanding," but there is no misunderstanding here. How is a customer supposed to know that the people who work in her salon are private contractors? That is NOT the customer's job to know. Also, it is not the customer's job to handle management issues like this. I told Bessie this was her problem that she needs to solve it and she looked at me with disagreement. I believe the customer is always right. I even warned Bessie when I asked for a full refund. I told her "could I just get a full refund for my money so we don't have to deal with each other anymore?" I left the salon crying and really angry. What kind of owner does that to a customer? Bessie is so unprofessional and should not be the owner of any business until she has learned how to deal with customers in a professional and polite way. She is so impolite and it seems as if she just wants to rig customers for their money. Again it is so unfortunate that she is the owner of the salon. Someone else who works there should take over as being the owner because at least they know how to make a customer happy. I would not recommend you go to Bessie. I suggest you book services with the other women who work there because they will handle any issues in a much more suitable and professional manner. I would take precaution because if an issue does come up, Bessie would not treat you right and she will just give you more problems with her attitude. Bessie may be the owner, but she is irresponsible, unprofessional, and anything but cordial. She brings shame to her own salon. If yelp allowed no stars I would give this salon no stars because of this situation. But I had to put something so one star, I guess. However, the other "private contractors" are amazing and deserve better representation as a whole. read more

I went to get an ombre from Bessie and was severely disappointed. When she started putting color in my hair, it seemed like a very messy process compared to my previous coloring experiences. It immediately made me question her qualifications as a hair stylist. When she washed out my color and i looked in the mirror i was not happy. My hair was so orange ( I naturally have black hair), not ombre like at all and not even close to the picture I showed her. When I expressed my disappointment she said she didn't have time to fix it, charged me $100 and said I could come back. I was very skeptical at coming back, but I didn't want to walk around with orange hair. So when I returned she said she needed to put blue in my hair to cancel out the orange, which seemed quite frightening to think that I could possibly have blue hair next! When she washed that out, I saw no improvement. She later admitted that she tried what she could and didn't know what else to do. I was very frustrated and asked for my money back, but she said she couldn't because of her policy. She offered to give me a free haircut but I quickly declined because I was scared of her touching my hair again! After her coloring services my hair also became extremely dry and frizzy and I never had this problem before. Avoid going to Bessie for a color! I don't know if it's because I have asian hair, but I feel like every stylists should be familiar with all types of hair. read more

I get brazillian waxes here and have had a lot of different experiences because I have tried all of their different girls. I would like to rate them individually... Becky is adorable and so friendly. She makes you feel incredibly comfortable putting all of your parts out in the open. She is quick and efficient. The downside is she isn't very nit picky...so if you want EVERY hair removed from your vagina, I would go to Ruby. Ruby is insanely OCD about getting every last hair out of every crevice. My hair did not grow back for weeks...this may be an over share but I know girls will appreciate it. It was a very very long and brutally painful experience though. She did regular wax strips then did the hot wax on top of that to get the remainder of the hairs. I wanted it to be over in less than 20 minutes and that did not happen. But if you want hairless, go Ruby. If you want really really fast and painless but not much of a friendly talker, not as comfortable, go with Stacey. read more

I just got back from my first appointment at Monroe Ave. today. I specifically booked with Kristy Stutzman as basically everyone I'm close friends with gets their hair done by her, and have followed her from other local salons over the many years. I booked online and then the online system went "wonky" and cancelled my appointment. I was contacted by Becky as well as Kristy as soon as they knew of the issue. Kristy more than made up for the error, booked me into the closest time frame available that worked with my schedule. She definitely went above and beyond before she even met me. When I arrived she made sure I was comfortable and offered me a beverage, I arrived early so had a few minutes to wait as she was with another client. Once in the chair I informed her that I had absolutely no idea what I wanted done. She provided me a few different ideas and when I still couldn't decide (I'm not someone that emotionally connected to my hair...it grows..anything can be fixed) she explained the benefits and drawbacks of each style. She explained each step and was so excited to get to work. I love what I walked out with, it is exactly how she explained and I am more than thrilled with the results. I know this is long and rambling, but I am so happy with my experience- I can't wait to go back. Also, She's very upbeat and personable....not one of those stylists that you're forced to have awkward conversation with. read more

Bavi is a miracle worker. She takes her time, explains what she is doing as she was working. My lashes had been done before at another salon, but I wasn't happy at all. Bavi did a wonderful job - all the issues I'd had from the lashes at the "other" salon, pulling/tugging when trying to brush them, poking, losing lashes, needing to still wear mascara and the lash wash stinging my eyes - none of those things have happened with the lashes and lash wash from Bavi. The first salon took an hour and a half, Bavi didn't rush and took over two hours. She helped me decide on the proper lash size #, we discussed the shape of my eyes and did a cat eye style lash. There was also no waiting time for getting the lashes wet. They don't stick out in a bunch of different directions like the others did. I brush them in the morning, maybe one other time mid day.... And then after washing them at night. If your thinking about lash extensions, Bavi is the best! read more

I went here for the first time a few weeks ago because there was a groupon. The groupon was with Bessie, the owner, and I had a terrible experience. Not only did she say she couldn't do what I wanted her to, but she also complained about other customers, had her cell phone going off constantly, made me feel guilty about having a groupon (although I wouldn't have been a customer without it), and bragged about what a good job she was doing. I generally go to a nice salon that charges about $110+tip for a haircut, highlight, lowlight, and style. My friends all agree that this is reasonable. Halfway through coloring my hair, Bessie said that the groupon wouldn't cover it (it was supposed to cover up to $117 worth of coloring) and ended up charging me an additional $30. Theoretically, I paid $150 total then. She also said she charges a separate $10 to blowdry and style, which I've never had to pay for separately in a nice salon. $150 for coloring my hair 1 color (no cut, highlights, or blowdry) plus listening to her poor attitude was DEFINITELY not worth it. I almost complained, but honestly just wanted to get out of there. I would never recommend Bessie, and I tell all my friends to stay away from the salon, at least for hair. read more
