Got my first custom suit from Monsieur Brunold (when it was Louis Purple) ten years ago for work and recently my second one, this time for my wedding for a three piece suit with a shirt. Still had my measurements in the system. The fit is so much better than any standard suit and great quality (my first one has lasted in nearly the original condition for ten years) and good price. Figuring out how/where to get/design a custom suit is hard and Charles is super friendly and helpful in figuring it out. Couldn't recommend more. read more

Oh my God!! I honestly cannot believe this company. The owner writes a reply and states basically states that "Hurricane Sandy" was the reason why my shipment was late. LIES!!! Hurricane Sandy did not hit NYC until late Nov.29th. My shipment was suppose to arrive by Nov 26 Hurricane Sandy was starting to build up in the Caribbean. How was shipment affected before then? They say they send their shirts to be made in Europe? How can shipment be affected when it is not anywhere close to the shipping routes from Europe to USA? Are they made in Mexico Guatemala Caribbean? Is there something they are not telling you? Not once did the owner contact me. Not once did they make an attempt to work with me. Not once did they say sorry. He then does the unthinkable. Then "the owner" publishes my Full Name on Yelp as a discount code. Can you believe this? How much more unprofessional can you be? Do you want to be treated like this? No customer wants to be treated like this. I cannot believe this is happening. He writes an inflammatory/threatening letter address to me. Its public and published so all can see... Note: as I stated before the owner never contacted me in any way. Please if you don't mind being Threatened Harassed Bullied than do your business here. I work in Nolita and walk past Louis Purple from time to time. Recently, upon looking at my closet and my ill-fitting Men's Warehouse suits, I decided to explore having one nice navy one to replace them all. I originally spoke with Charles about the possibility and had the privilege of speaking and coordinating everything about the suit ultimately with Bryan, a quite enjoyable sales associate to corroborate with. He gives it to you straight - no bull@#$# - which is frankly refreshing when you consider how many establishments these days are more worried about their commission and take the hard sell approach. They all just come off as fake. This place/Bryan, the polar opposite. Bryan gave me insight on how different fits, elements, and details would affect the outcome and with his insight, experience, and wisdom, great suits come out of there all the time. I took the opportunity to purchase a simple navy suit for a wedding that I had to attend in February. I came to Louis Purple after a few months of convincing myself that I needed a new suit. Just short of bespoke, you can pretty much customize anything and everything about what you want. It is overwhelming at first but Bryan took the proper amount of time to guide me through it. I was a bit worried however as I only had about 5 weeks before the wedding. Bryan assured me that it would be done in time. I called about 2 weeks before I had to fly out for the wedding to check on the status. I got a call not 30 minutes later stating that there was a snafu with the order and would not be ready in time. I was understandably disappointed. Bryan, told me to come in immediately to go through my options. I came in with a bit of trepidation, but Bryan sat me down and first explained the situation, how he was dealing with it, and some possible alternatives for the wedding I had. Ultimately, a fine grey suit they had on hand fit me perfectly and let me borrow the suit for the wedding. It went off without a hitch, the suit looked fantastic, and received multiple comments on it. A few weeks go by and I get a call that the original suit was ready. I go to try it on: perfect. I mean, for the price, this is better than anywhere in NYC. Yeah you can go and get a bespoke suit made somewhere else and yeah, it may fit minutely better. But you'll pay thousands of dollars guaranteed. And if you want to fool yourself by going to J. Crew to buy their Ludlow, sure, you'll look good. But instead, you can have one custom, from top to bottom - from the fabric to the thread color on the buttons - for the same. No brainer for me. And to top it off, I offered, and received, a crazy good deal on the suit they lent me. That was the icing on the top of the cake. An overall great experience at Louis Purple. When a business rights a wrong like these guys did, there is no reason not to shop there. It is the true mark of a service-oriented business culture and I will be shopping there again. Discovered this shop several months ago, and decided to walk in and check things out. I was introduced to Bryan who went through fabrics, styles, and price options and did a thoughtful analysis of my style, needs, and budget. I wear suits every day for work and had been considering moving into custom territory and away from my off the rack Hugo Boss suits. Fast forward to today: I've bought two new suits and going back today for my third (or fourth, or fifth). The craftsmanship of their products is excellent, both suits fit perfectly like a glove when they came in (no tailoring tweaks needed which is rare for me, I'm a tall guy and usually takes a couple tries to get it close to right), and after factoring what I used to pay for a "nice" off the rack suit plus tailoring, what you get from LP is vastly superior. Bryan has morphed into my style psychologist, and actually challenges me with styles and pieces I never even considered before, helping me eventually reach a place where my formal wear meets my casual wear. Don't hesitate to visit this place, you won't regret it. I will never buy an off the rack suit ever again, and for that I thank Bryan. First off, I used the thrilllist rewards deal to buy the custom suit I'm reviewing, which makes the suit a solid quality buy for the money. Without the half off discount, $1k suit would be a bit expensive. I'm 6'3 with a thin build (always buy slim or super slim fit shirts). Service - 4 stars. Charles and his small team of associates were very attentive to the specific fabrics, linings, and customization I asked for. When I had to adjust the pant length and width upon trying on the finished suit for the first time, they were apologetic and courteous in making sure the alterations were completed in a timely manner and to my specifications. The only obvious downfall is that the multi-measurement fitting I went through didn't create a finished product that fit the first time around. If I didn't have to make multiple trips to the shop I would've ranked service 5 stars. Approximate time from initial fitting to finished product was 5 weeks, with an additional 2 weeks tacked on for alterations. Product - 5 stars. After owning Brooks Brothers and other tailored suits, I have to say this is the best fitting and most impressive suit I own. The fabric is high quality, but most notable is the detail in workmanship from the stitching to the customized lining, thread color, and monogram - impeccable. I've received many compliments for my suit at work and will continue to send colleagues to Louis Purple. Price - 4 stars. If I didn't have the thrilllist deal, this suit would've costed a little over $1k, which I feel is a little steep seeing all the competition available once you hit that price point. Overall I would recommend Louis Purple to any young professional that wants a crisp, impressive suit for the workplace or wedding, etc. As long as you can wait the 4-5 weeks, the finished product is well worth the wait. read more

I'll start this review with a question. Seriously, how do you go back to off-the-rack after you've experienced what can be done with a bespoke suit? I've just picked up my first (ever) made to measure suit and while it may seem like the experience can be overwhelming (ie. how am I supposed to know if I should get a ticket pocket on the jacket or the ideal width of my lapel), it turned out to be very smooth and something that every man should do at least once in his life. Charles measured and then patiently guided me through the entire process. To think about it, all I had to do was stand in front of the mirror and look good. Three weeks after the measurement session, he called me to say the suit was ready. The pants were fine but the sleeves on the suit needed to be shortened a little to show some cuff. Charles was quick to get this adjustment made, and one week later I was back in the shop to pick up my splurge purchase. I'm happy to report that the suit fits exactly as I want and looks sharp. The best thing is that it costs about the same as something you'd find at Bloomingdales but is infinity times better. In summary...great suit and great experience thanks to Charles! read more

Scheduled an appointed to get a suit made, person I spoke to on the phone was very nice. I even got a call back to confirm my appointment. This was my first made to measure suit, and I was not sure what to expect. When I arrived at the store Bryan greeted me with my first time. (which was nice) Store is small, but they have everything that is needed to satisfy any customer. I was measured in every direction possible, and I tried on a couple of different styles of jackets and pants. Once all that was done the real fun began, and good thing I brought a friend along to help me with all the different choices I had. Bryan sat down with me and went into detail about the different fabric prices (which were less than i expected) and all the customization options that I had, which were all included in the price. I rarely review things on Yelp, but I thought these guys deserved the shout out. I purchased a custom made suit several years ago from Charles and Chloé the experience was second to none. I really had no previous knowledge of what I wanted and they didn't make that an awkward experience. They took their time and made me an amazing suit that I'm still wearing to this day. It always gets compliments and it looks as good today as it did when I picked it up. I recently was in NYC for a short weekend and, though they were busy with a large wedding order, they made time to made adjustments so I didn't have to make a return trip. I'm sure this means they were working overtime. From my experience purchasing off the rack suits (Macy's, Men's Warehouse, Brooks Brothers) to custom, made-to-measure, bespoke (Michael Andrews), nothing comes close to Louis Purple's craftsmanship, knowledge and service. 1) Charles had a deep knowledge of fabrics and contemporary style. The cuts are more Euro than Western, which means suits actually fit you. Off the shelf that are tailored or Bespoke like Michael Andrews are still western style suits that dont necessarily fit most people. LP's cuts are more Euro. The fabrics are top notch - noticeable difference between LP's fabrics and their custom suit peers with Asian factories. 2) Charles does not sell you his suits / products. He educates the user and never tries to "sell" his product. Other boutiques try selling / forcing you to make a decision quickly. The suits are on the slightly expensive side, but when you factor in quality of product and tailoring associated with LP's suits, it's probably only a modest premium over off the shelf (One of my Brooks Brothers suits cost me $500 and an additional $200 for tailoring). I've purchased 3 suits and 4 pants through LP and most likely will continue with LP for my future needs. read more

I recently had a snake skin suit jacket made by Antonio at Louis Purple and couldn't possibly be happier. Snake skin is notoriously difficult to work with. It can't be ironed or subjected to high heat at all. Furthermore, it can't be manipulated as easily as other, more forgiving leathers. Having had his own label and worked in high fashion for years, Antonio embraced this challenge and created a work of art. I originally purchased 4 skins, the bare minimum one should use to create a jacket since the pattern and grain must be matched to make a symmetrical and elegant piece that doesn't look piecemeal. Antonio was able to spin gold from hay and produce something that looked like it cost a fortune. The styling was incredible. Antonio's instincts were spot on and he really took great care in making the jacket look couture and classy, not sleazy or tacky. This is a huge feat, considering we're talking about shiny, scaly, rustling python skin that is normally seen on oil barons. He included inner lining and pockets that looked amazing and welted outer pockets as well as welted button holes. The lapel was customized in a way to give the jacket an edgier feel and the back of the piece looked absolutely incredible. As great as the final product was, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the excellent service. Antonio made a great effort to explain to me the process of creating a jacket and the limitations and challenges the skins presented. Despite this, the final outcome was nothing short of magical. Yet another testament to their professionalism is the speed at which they finished the piece. I was invited to a friend's show for Mercedes Benz fashion week and had less than two weeks to have this jacket made. Antonio had it done in just over one week, a miracle if there ever was one. At one point during the show, I felt guilty about possibly overshadowing my friend's line with my own amazing jacket. Finally, the price was very, VERY reasonable. Once again, my guilt set in for being the beneficiary of a product, made with such talent and love, for what I would consider a pittance. If it were possible to rate them even higher, Antonio and Louis Purple would receive a 10 out of 5. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for great quality, service, speed, price, and attention to detail. I will never buy an off the rack suit ever again. I just picked up my Louis Purple suit in NoHo. Seriously- this piece of art is amazing. The fabric is luxurious and the cut precise. I have a very athletic build- 44 back with a 30 waist and legs like a soccer player. It's always been difficult to buy off the rack but my perception of custom suits was that they were too expensive and that custom suits were something that those with very traditional tastes had done. I was surprised at 1) how reasonable the price was and 2) with all the options that were given, Louis Purple turned out an incredibly modern and sharp suit! This is not your dad's navy blue suit! I chose the details down to the buttons and the color thread used in the button slits! Amazing. I even had it monogrammed. My fabric was a plaid looking fabric with a pink cube square design. The inside of the suit is a combination of an iridescent pink with pink paisley along the inside back area (trust me- super amazing!). I also paid extra to get a vest done in the same material. I chose the English cut. The guy that owns the shop, Charles, was on target with his recommendations. If i had to complain about something, I would say that I would have liked to have seen more ready made suits in the store to help me choose my fabric. There were so many books and options i didn't know what to pick. It took me a good 2 hours to finally make up my mind. The fabrics were fantastic. I wish i had discovered this custom suit concept earlier. If you are not sure if you want to invest that kind of $ in a suit, i would start with getting a shirt done and see how it fits and how you like it. It'll make you realize what you are investing in- you end up with a really sharp look. read more

There's a few custom and bespoke tailors in the neighborhood, but Louis Purple (LP) had the most interesting and constantly changing storefront display window. I was greeted by Charles (owner) and Bryan (store lead and tailor). They were both very genuine, honest and upfront about expectations, and great at providing recommendations on fabric and subtle design elements that come with custom products. Net net: 5 stars for a quality product and professional customer experience. After 4 weeks I received my beautiful shirts, in-spec, and I'm thoroughly impressed with the quality and craftsmanship. I look forward to working with them again on more shirts and exploring suiting options. I highly recommend Louis Purple over buying shirts off the rack. Check them out, if price is a concern - I challenge you to work with them on styles that might be less than what you're paying at NYC department stores. read more

I'm getting married in a few months and wanted to get a custom suit made for the wedding. After doing some research and looking around the Soho area I decide to go with Louis Purple because of the quality of the material as well as the knowledge of Charles, the owner of the shop. Charles had me try on both an English cut and an Italian cut suit. After I decided on the cut he took my measurements and made notations based on my posture in order for the suit to fit perfect. From there we picked from an extensive list of fine Italian fabrics. This is where the value of the suit shines compared to others at the same price points. From there he guided me through an array of options including type of buttons, liner, pockets, stitching, etc. About 2-3 weeks later I received a text that my suit was ready and today I picked it up. Even after we both irresponsibly missed our initial appointment, Charles was kind enough to reschedule and treat us like a loyal patron. We were able to customize almost every aspect of the suits and shirts - cut, color, pockets, buttons, design/pattern, monogram, etc., you name it. A few weeks later we received a text to pick up our suits, and they both fit perfectly. The Groupon deal was a no brainer, and the next time I need a new suit I will be returning! I have been looking into buying a made-to-measure suit for quite some time now so naturally when Groupon posted the Louis Purple coupon I pounced on the opportunity. The shop is small and the service is excellent. The staff were not stuffy at all and quite attractive. They really got a feel for my style within the first few moments of the fitting. After the staff measured me, we looked through all the various fabric options and color combinations. The options were staggering at times but I never felt overwhelmed. From collar preference to felt color the staff guided me through every little detail. After the fitting they said they would give me a call in 3 - 4 weeks when it was done. Two weeks later I get the call to come pick it up. The suit looked great but needed a few minor adjustments. I like my suits narrow because I'm a tall "skinny bitch." It took another 3 days after the second fitting and I'm happy to say that I now own a genuine navy blue Louis Purple suit with plenty of gorgeous details that fits PERFECTLY. I highly recommend Louis Purple and have already made arrangement for my twin brother's fitting. ... and no, he is not getting an identical suit. That would be obnoxious. read more

Got a made to measure suit here a few months ago. Here are the pros and cons after some hindsight. Pros: Price. My suit cost about $900 and the fabric was pretty nice. For NYC this should look pretty good. Range of fabrics/choices available. This was also great. They had a variety of linings and other details to choose from that I found pretty good compared to other places. Timing. Their turnaround time and hours of operation were great. I was very happy that I could come in Sunday evening etc. For professionals in the city (I suppose their target demographic) this flexibility helps. Cons: The suit didn't fit. It was way too tight. I saw that the gentleman assisting me likes the flood pants look and tight shoulders, but this should not be imposed on the customer without their express consent. When I tried it on, the shoulders were by any measure too tight and this is really the worst thing not to fit on a suit. I suspect they would have had to do more work taking in the suit elsewhere if they had gone a size up so they went one down. Unfortunately this ruined it. Also the pants were ungodly tight in the crotch. I would rather leave some things to the imagination. Anyway, when I noted the shoulders were too tight, the manager went on the defensive (offensive?). He began acting like I was 'one of those problem customers'. He informed me that this was made to measure and not custom so it would not be 100% perfect, his tone implying I was focusing on something too trivial. I pretty much demanded they let out the crotch and try to give more space in the back. He said that "two fittings are not customary in made to measure" like I was asking for him to give me a kidney. He eventually relented and made the alterations. The entire time his tone implied I was overly demanding and unreasonable, so I was like "dude I just paid $900 for a suit that is too small. What am I supposed to want here?" When I got the suit back, the pants ended up being to big in that area and the shoulders were still too tight (frankly there was nothing they could do about that). I still took it and paid and wear it, but am aggravated every time I think about the experience. It looks great (they make a beautiful suit for the money) but sadly looks way too tight if I button it and just plain tight if I leave it unbuttoned. One of the more frustrating things was they never acknowledged the suit didn't fit right when it was obvious (although one of the 'tailors', of which there were like four for some reason, kind of did when the main business guy wasn't in the room). I also didn't like their attitude in responding. They had this whole "well, the customer is always right, even if he doesn't know what he's talking about" attitude which I didn't appreciate. If the thing fit better, I definitely would give this five stars, but obviously a suit that doesn't fit is pretty useless. read more

Summary: I came in to try a made to measure shirt with Louis Purple, and I'm so impressed that I plan to go back and get a suit. Consider this part 1 of a review. Thrillist had a deal for a custom shirt from Louis Purple claiming "intensive 10 measurement tailoring from a top french tailor". They were also offering a deal on suiting, advertising even more measurements, but I wasn't ready to pull the trigger on a suit from a tailor I didn't know anything about. So that you understand, I bought this shirt because I suffer from the same problem as the majority of men in NYC: I'm not fat. Yet nearly all off-the-rack slim fit shirts that fit around my chest/shoulders are too wide in the stomach and end up giving me man-blouse syndrome. Seriously, is darting a lost art or something? On to the review: I showed up at my fitting appointment and was whisked off into a world of heavy french accents and shirting options. The "10 measurements" was actually more like 3 measurements which, I shit you not, did not include my sleeve length. Then the tailor offered me a sample shirt to try on, we talked in general terms about what needed to be adjusted, and that was it for measurements. All finished in about 5 minutes. Was I impressed? no. Any custom shirt I've had made in Thailand or HK involved far more measurements and more discussion about fit. However, I think it would be foolish to pass judgement on the tailoring before I see the finished product. For all I know those extra measurements I had at other places were the sign of an inexperienced eye. If the shirt fits well then I don't care how many measurements it took. But I think it is clear that on the spectrum of custom fit Louis Purple falls far closer to off-the-rack than bespoke. I'm not yet convinced that the shirt will fit better than any off the rack that offers neck/shirt length + 3 levels of slim fit. The next step was customization with all the features you would expect. I picked a pattern out of 100+ options and then picked a second pattern for contrasting inside the cuffs. Cuff type, pocket or (if you have any sense) no pocket, colar type, buttons, button hole stitching color... you get the idea, they had all the options you should expect from a custom shirt. Personally when I'm getting custom clothes I like to have a discussion with the tailor when making these options. He should know better than I will which fabric works in which situations or if the button choice I made would look ridiculous. In that regard I would give Louis Purple a thumbs up. Again, I haven't seen the shirt right but the help I got in making customization choices was creative and friendly. As I said in the beginning this is only part one of the review. Once I have the shirt on I'll be able to give a proper rating. For now though the Thrillist deal is still going on and I figured there might be other people out there wondering what to expect. Part 2: I got an SMS letting me know my shirt was ready to come check out. Nice. I like that they are easy to reach by SMS and e-mail. So I went in for the second fitting and, although the material looked great, the waist was too big. I was bummed, but I stepped out to let the guy have a look. The moment he saw it he just said "alright, looks like we will need to take the waist in but how do you like everything else?" To me, that was a great sign. He didn't need me to tell him I was unhappy or what I was unhappy with, he was just ready to take action. So he took down a few notes, pulled the shirt in a few spots and made sure he knew the fit I was going for then let me know the modification would be a ready in a few days. The end result? I have the shirt and it is exactly what I was looking for. It is currently my favorite made to measure shirt, actually it might be my favorite shirt in general. The fit is great and I couldn't find fault in the stitching (and I looked longer than I probably needed to). Not to mention that the pattern combo I picked out is awesome, but I suffer from an overwhelming case of self love so I would be bound to say that about any pattern I picked. The main thing they could do to make me happier would be organizing and labeling their fabrics better. I came in looking for a light weight fabric for a good summer shirt and was a bit overwhelmed digging through their fabric books entirely at random. Why where some fabrics in one book and others in another? What was the difference between fabric A and fabric B? no one knows. The final question mark: price. Since I bought the shirt on a deal I didn't pay full price. If they always sold shirts of this quality for under $100 I probably would stop shopping anywhere else. Life is never that easy though. So next time when it is full price I'll update the review if my opinions have changed. read more

Came all the way from St. Louis just to be measured and fitted by Chloe of Monsieur Brunold. Everything went perfectly. We were only in NYC for a few weekends, but Chloe accommodated us well, and made sure we get the best out of our experience. Her suggestions for my suit were amazing. Got a suit and a shirt made. The shirt was disgusting. The sleeves were way too short. They refused to fix it properly, just tried to move the buttons instead of doing it over, and insisted that I could still wear it. I can't really stretch my hands above my head. The suit is fine, except...when I first put on my jacket, excess lining comes out the cuffs. What?? I tuck it back in, and it's fine. After my experience with them trying to 'fix' my shirt, I decided to just live with it. Not coming back. read more

I did not have a good experience here as I wasn't happy with the knowledge of the staff and the end product is something I simply am not happy with. I've had a lot of experience with many different caliber of custom tailor and this place was not exactly noteworthy. My main problem is the actual product to me seems like a bad value. You are overpaying for what you get in my opinion and with that being said I would recommend other places to take your business. They stress that their best quality is a hand made suit but it feels so stiff and lifeless. If the product were better I could look past the other things but even the other things like staff knowledge and attitude were poor. When I raised issue with the fit of the jacket which was clearly bad they just tried to convince me that it was nice. I knew right then and there I just threw away my money. I purchased my suit from them about a year ago and haven't worn the suit because it looks so stupid. It looks like a costume. read more

I live in San Francisco but was walking around New York one day while my wife was shopping and randomly found Louis Purple. I had been thinking about getting a custom tux for a while, and wasn't planning on buying one that day. But after a few minutes of talking to the salesmen about what I was looking for, they were so helpful that I decided I didn't need to wait any longer. The suit was mailed to me and it fit perfectly. I couldn't be happier with it. I will definitely be contacting them again for future suits since they already have my measurements, and the owner Charles is very helpful and easy to contact. I've had a few full bespoke, custom suits made, and none of them fits as well or looks as sharp as the made-to-measure suit I got from Louis Purple. They really do an excellent job with the details - they got my fit almost perfect the first time, and fixed the minor tweaks promptly and painlessly. They also understand exactly how to cut a suit in the modern style. Also, their fabric selection is top-notch -- I ended up with a beautiful blue-grey wool herringbone that didn't break the bank because they got it as part of a special deal. I can't even count how many times I've gotten compliments on the suit from friends, colleagues, and even strangers. Bindle & Keep and others may come to your office, but take a quick trip to Noho to visit Louis Purple and you'll find your money is better spent. read more
