TL;DR: Although a bit pricy, Monsoon is a nice spot for some high quality Vietnamese food that puts a modern twist on dishes you usually won't find at many Viet restaurants. I'll start by saying the menu might seem overwhelming at first, but most of the items are just classic Vietnamese dishes that sound fancier than they are. For example, with the carmalized Idaho catfish clay pot I thought we were getting something pretty fancy but really it was just a simple grilled fish dish that my grandma sometimes cooks. This is not your typical pho or bun bo hue place, but more of your classic home style dinner dishes place. Now I'm not saying the food isn't good, because it is delicious here. They cooked the catfish clay pot better than my grandma ever has, and the drunken chicken was also a favorite of mine. You can really taste the quality on the dishes. My only complaint would be that with the high prices on the dishes, they should at least be including rice with our dish, or at least offer it for cheap. They serve a bowl of jasmine rice here for $3 each. Normally I wouldn't complain but these Vietnamese dishes are MEANT to be eaten with rice. There's no way you can enjoy these dishes without rice, and so I find it absurd that they charge so much for rice knowing we're obliged to order it just to eat our food the way it's meant to be eaten. Overall, if you want Vietnamese food and are looking for something nicer, modern and higher quality than your typical family lender Vietnamese restaurant, this is your spot. read more

Service is not always that consistent, although I believe that might be because they seem to be understaffed at times. One of the less memorable experiences happened when we were seated at the bar. The female bar tender was so passive aggressive we had to leave. Not sure what was going on. Noteworthy is their acoustic system. With a full restaurant plus music in the background at an enjoyable level, you can still carry a good conversation at the table without feeling you have to shout. Well done! It was a life saver since everything else around was closed already (11pm) It was just the bartender who helped us and he explained all the dishes well and provided us with more than average knowledge of cocktails. The atmosphere was really nice and the food was super tasty. Although this place reminds me of cactus in that the food celebrates traditional Vietnamese cooking but there is a noticeable American flare in the dishes: the papaya salad was more of a coleslaw than papayas, the egg rolls were served with wraps, the plating is too beautiful, etc... I loved the food and the fragrances when you walked in. We had tried the catfish clay pot (to die for) and the "drunken chicken" amongst other items. My only issue was with the drunken chicken because I was expecting traditional SE asian style chicken, steamed, and in a light sauce. But it came out tasting/looking like chinese style fast food orange chicken....What the heck? Very odd. But overall I was still very happy with my food, drinks, and the ambience. Visited after a very long time and did take out. Managed to catch them In between brunch and lunch so got something from each menu :) the shui mai was amazing. I greedily ate it down. Got the eggplant from the main menu - it used to be my favorite many years ago. Felt okayish this time around. I think the eggplant is better eaten there than in take out as there is little sauce and the take out container sops some of that sauce. So not as impactful when you finally plate and eat. I had the Green Thumb which was Gin and Cucumber with other herbs that was very refreshing. I got the papaya salad and drunken chicken. Both were large servings fit to share with nothing special in them. I felt the drunken chicken had too much breading for my taste but it was very crispy. Ordered the beef pho and was told it would take 10 minutes, it came out around half an hour later (I guess they have a new system and lost track of my order). The portion size was on the small side considering it was a $12 bowl of noodles, but the pho itself was tasty. The broth was flavorful and the beef was really tender, so I was enjoying it until I found a hair curled up in the noodles. No one came by to check and I wanted to head out so I just finished my food and asked to pay. I considered tipping low without being rude, but the waiter watched me enter my tip amount on the card reader anyways, so there's that. Whenever I take my dog on a walk near here in the evening, it is always packed and the reservations are always booked. The first time I was here, the hostess was super overwhelmed and told us that we could be seated and then quickly took it away for somebody that was 20 minutes late for their reservations since they overheard our conversation. Something shocking with my entree was there was no rice just a bowl full of chicken... no veggies either so it seems like it's more of a shareable item than an entree by itself - super unexpected for an Asian restaurant. Great food close to my apartment. Just moved up here and in with my boyfriend yesterday and figured we'd give it a shot. We both left feeling like the staff was rather rude. Monsoon is in my top three Seattle restaurants! I recommend going there for brunch, dinner, lunch, or happy hour--really any time of day. Their drunken chicken is a must try and goes surprisingly well with eggs for brunch. The pork buns are the best I've had anywhere in Seattle, perfectly steamed and I always wish I had about 3 more when I finish them. The daikon and taro root cakes are interesting, the sauce really makes it. It's a good complement to some of their meatier options. The bamboo leaf sticky rice is a great addition to a meal. Monsoon is one of those places where I always mean to try their new things but once I've been seated I get too excited about my old favorites to introduce any variety. It's a great menu with tons of different exciting options. They also have oysters and a lot of seafood if you have a friend in town. We came to visit Monsoon because we were looking for some good Asian Fusion and a fun atmosphere in Capitol Hill. The food is fantastic but the atmosphere is really not great. They didn't have a table ready for our 8pm reservation and said "we might have to wait a while." I pressed them and we ended up getting a table after they shifted things around. We then ordered drinks which took about 15 minutes to come. We ordered some food which was delicious but the timing of when they brought out the food was paced oddly, an experience I've never had before. They all of a sudden brought three of our dishes, and then much later the final dish. Just a very rushed atmosphere and it killed the experience even though the food was excellent. read more

My girlfriend and I had dinner here during a brief visit to Seattle with friends this past weekend. It was packed, which is really excellent to see after such an extended period of restaurants operating within the bounds of pandemic regulations. We enjoyed our time, fun music, buzzy atmosphere, and excellent food. Highlights were the Bo La Lot, Drunken Chicken, and Ahi Tuna roll. They also had a friendly staff who were able to take our order across multiple phases (we took a while to decide for each course), and offer advice on what menu items to combine into a single course. One dimension of the experience which was comically bad was that the staff decided to play "Closing Time" at 10pm on the dot, while we, and two other tables were still finishing our food and drinks, before they offered us a check. I'm not sure if it was meant to be funny (it was) or if the staff is not paid beyond the official 10pm closing time, and they were poorly incentivized to put in the extra effort to tend to table still wrapping up past the hour, but it is the only reason this review is 4 stars instead of 5. read more
