Paying top dollar for glamorized Asian food was not a plan I had during my first visit to Monsoon. In fact, for most Asian fusion restaurants, its hard for me to justify the eclectic nature of combining food and charging 4x than what its worth. I decided I'd chance it and see if indeed it was any better than the other places. The restaurant itself was beautiful. From the forks to the walls, things were organized in a way where one would detect that quality is their mantra. People had to walk around the restaurant like a labyrinth, which is probably not a good thing in terms of a plausible layout. For the customers who ate there, it looked as if it the majority of the folks who ate here would be too scared to head further into the international district or even Chinatown. Even the service was a little pretentious in their attempt to sound like chefs who prepared the meals and explaining the meals while butchering the names. Prices were absurdly high and dining here may have been just as pricey as some of the steakhouses nearby. At least with the prices you get a fabulous presentation. Drunken Chicken shouldn't have to cost $15.00 when it can be had for half that in a standard Thai place. The filet mignon was decent, but unimpressive and ultimately disappointing. read more

Looking for great Asian brunch in Seattle? Monsoon is sure to deliver. We had a coupled dim sum dishes: shrimp dumpling and pork bun. We shared the Banh Xeo (Vietnamese crepe) stuffed with prawns and grilled pork deliciousness. It comes with fresh herbs and lettuce to wrap it in. The drunken chicken is awesome! The ginger sauce is great and the rice helps to sop it all up. We also shared the green beans with mushrooms. Dear Monsoon, On top of the fact that your food is incredibly delicious (note: try the Shallots and the tofu with lemongrass...also, you convinced my bf, who is a bit carnivorous, to try the tofu veggie/lettuce wraps, which, by the way, he said were incredible and couldn't stop eating them), you just began serving craft cocktails. Y.U.M. Love the fact that although the drinks are pre-made by the bartender who drives into Seattle from Bellevue to create the concoctions, they are still fresh and scrumptious. The Honeybush Fizz served carbonated in a small champagne bottle with a straw is a MUST TRY for any discerning palate. Love the decor and feel of this place . The food was delicious I had the duck congee and my friend had the grilled shrimp vermicelli bowl. Well balance flavor of duck, ginger and green onions on the congee only downside was the egg was a bit over poached . Also our waiter had to ask us or order twice which was fine until we began to realize we had been waiting awhile finally got our meal after waiting 45 minutes. I've ordered Monsoon on Uber eats numerous times and love the drunken chicken. In general, I love general tso / orange chicken type dishes but they can often feel super heavy and unhealthy. I have no clue if the drunken chicken is healthier but it sure tastes healthier but with just as much flavor. The eggplant with coconut milk is also great. I wish the rice was included in the pricing but you have to order separately so don't forget it. read more

So to clarify, I'm not very big on "modern" Asian cuisine. I'm old fashion and prefer an authentic taste. With that aside, I chose to try out Monsoon as part of Restaurant Week for lunch. May have I ventured in with too big of expectations? Not really, but I am quite disappointed. The slow service will be excused since I can understand it being in the middle of Restaurant Week and our server was exceptionally nice. I'm sadden to say I can't comment on the decor since I was busy on my phone while waiting for my company to arrive; horrible I know. So I will just move on to the food.. The Imperial Roll was good, nothing outstanding though. It tasted pretty similar to my own or a relatives' or at any other Vietnamese restaurant. As my main entree I opted for the Drunken Chicken. The chicken was delicious although the sauce it was drenched in, was too much on the ginger sour side for me. It was pretty overwhelming. Also, the rice is place in the same bowl so it gets all mushy which I absolutely hate. That only, ruined my appetite. For dessert, they served.. oh my gosh I cannot remember! It was something like banana bread and it was pretty darn good. In any case, the experience was nice with good company but the food was underwhelming. Food was very tasty! We got the catfish clay pot and tofu, and they were both very flavorful. The clay pot broth was especially delightful, and we put all our rice into it. Decor is also lovely, and the outdoor seating options are fantastic during the summer. What took our experience from a solid four to a five was the service. The husband and I came to Monsoon for Seattle restaurant week. It had made my list of places to try, and I see it appear on suggested lists all the time. The dinner rush the previous night meant some substitutions. The staff was friendly and they were willing to work within my vegan preference. Unfortunately, they were unable to substitute anything for banana cake dessert (I'm allergic to banana). The prices are a little high. We came during COVID and sat outside for brunch. They had their dim sum menu back, which was a treat! The shrimp dumplings and shrimp and chive wontons are super tiny portions, but tasted great. You'll probably want to get a congee per person to fill up. We ordered the duck congee, but they brought us the mushroom congee. Still tasted yummy so no huge complaints since I love mushrooms. Was disappointed to not be able to order it when we went to Monsoon in cap hill for dinner. Although disappointed we couldn't order vermicelli bowls, we were really happy with what we ordered - drunk chicken, catfish clay pot and the prawn papaya salad. I have heard their catfish is really good and the sauce was amazing. The papaya salad could have had more flavor or spice so we asked to have some spicy sauces brought. It was really good once we added some. Also had the Saigon mule for a drink and really liked it. Food here at dinner time is meant to be eaten family style. Monsoon has been a staple on Capitol Hill for a while, but I had my first visit last week. The restaurant itself is decorated in an upscale but still casual manner. I was with a group of 8 other ladies after a meeting. The level of familiarity with Vietnamese food varied around our table. Our server was not only helpful in explaining menu items, but the key features of Vietnamese food in general. The Crispy Imperial Rolls were amazing, as were the rice noodle bowls and, of course, the Pho. If you want to sample a little of everything, they offer a $13 combo plate with noodles, chicken, shrimp and a few slices of those super tasty Crispy Imperial Rolls. The food is fresh and delicious; the spice level not too intense - but you can up it if you'd like. The service is fast and friendly and the pricing is remarkably reasonable. Parking can be tough in the area, but we had no problem, and early week lunches don't seem too crowded. Blake Lively made our night. Monsoon has a very hole in the wall feel. I felt like I was dining in someone's garage, but the modern fixtures and furniture definitely offset any dingy feeling I would have had. What I appreciated the most about Monsoon was the ability to share the dishes we ordered: "family style." Monsoon's family style approach is really conducive to facilitating conversation. This is a great way to dine if you're on a date or out with your friends. The mix of sharing food and good conversation makes for a good start to the night. At monsoon, we ordered the fresh and fried spring rolls, beef carpaccio, spare ribs, the lamb main entree, and the string beans side dish. The fresh and fried rolls were pretty standard. The spare ribs, beef barpaccio, and the string beans were delicious! Melt in your mouth savory. The lamb was underwhelming. 5/6 isn't that bad! For dessert we had the banana cake with salty coconut sauce. It was a heavenly mix of sweet and salty. It's one of those go-to dessert if you're having a rough day and need some comfort dessert. AH! The service was excellent. You could really tell the servers worked as a team and they were very attentive to our needs. We had one server who was a Blake Lively look-a-like and she was a great sport for putting up with some of the over the top comments we may have made. Monsoon is small. I would recommend making reservations (especially if you're trying to go during one of the busy times) because it might be hard to get a table. One criticism I would have: The menu was hard to navigate. They should really try to have headings between courses so that it is easy to differentiate between plates(i.e., what are appetizers vs. main entrees). I noticed the phrase "3rd week" on top of the menu, which makes me think that their menus change depending on the week? That gets me even more excited as I definitely plan to come back here again! read more

We had lunch at Monsoon (Capitol Hill location) today and its as our first visit and not our last. First of all, we've been meaning to go there for a few years now and finally decided to try something new today. Glad we did! The decor is gorgeous, the service was friendly but a little slow for my working lunch hour but otherwise still great. Vegetarians and Vegans: This place is an excellent choice. -Start with the Ch Giò Chay Crispy Vegetarian Rolls. They are outstanding and full of flavor. They're a crispy wonton basically that you wrap in lettuce with noodles, peppermint and hot sauce or soy sauce and the combination is amazing. -Entree: The Vegan Curry Soup is the best I've had. It's semi thick with full spice, tofu, carrots, purple potatoes, green beans, noodles and basil that's cooked to perfection. You can add more basil, a twist of lime and bean sprouts if you want too. I ate the whole thing! Dessert: Have the banana coconut cream "cake". It's fantastic!! Checked out lots of options on Yelp and decided to try Monsoon (Seattle location) based on the menu and reviews. It was fantastic. My husband and I decided to try a number of options with the intent to leave with enough for a meal at home the next day. Everything was excellent, but our favorites were the Asian Eggplant (the sauce is next level), the Crispy Imperial Roll (the flavors -- the textures) and the Grilled Alaskan Salmon. We also had the Asparagus, the Crab Fried Rice and the Bo La Lot. Our waiter, Tyler, was phenomenal. Holy shit. Monsoon rocked my world. Plenty of street parking. Decor? Fabulous. They accommodated our group of ~10 easily. Obviously I tried a bit of something everyone ordered, and I will tell you... it is all perfect. The diver scallops were phenomenal- perfectly cooked, definitely fresh, and in a delicious sweetish sauce that perfectly the cut bitterness of the radishes and baby brussels sprouts that were served with the dish. Hands down the best menu item. The bo lau lac was cooked perfectly. Small pieces of meat that were tender and succulent. Mussels were fabulous. One friend drank the broth- it was that good. I am not usually a fan of fancier fusion restaurants. I was surprised that this place was pretty okay. You would not feel the authentic ambiance of a typical Vietnamese place and the decor was definitely more upscale and contemporary, and the place cleaner than your typical Asian restaurant. We came on a late Saturday lunch and I was surprised with the slow service considering the place was not full. Good thing I like the minimalist design of their water bottles which calmed the mood. My girlfriend ordered the ordinary beef pho. For the price, the bowl was very small. The broth did not taste bad nor was it delicious. There was a piece of beef slice that was really tender and soft. Otherwise, the others were a little chewy. The good thing, my girlfriend did not get extremely thirsty after. They probably control their MSG in their food. Since it is a fusion restaurant, I decided to go with a more Western dish. I had the squash with cauliflower puree. It was better than expected. The serving size was a little on the skimpier side but they made it up with flavor. The puree was delicious and the spicy oil added the extra kick that the dish needed. I am used to having dim sum at International District or even in more upscale Chinese places in Vancouver, but the dim sum prices at this place significantly higher. I did not try any but their dim sum should be over-the-top good to justify the price. Anyway, if I want Vietnamese or dim sum, I think I will just opt for more authentic places, which are cheaper as well. But I guess this is the only place in Capitol Hill that serves this cuisine.
