There was a lot of small issues but the worst was the guest service. Honestly we found a lot wrong with the place (our room turned into a sauna late at night, the light switches didn't work, holes in the sheets, an odd children's book on the bed, etc).... But the real struggle was the service when we went to breakfast. The eggs were somehow rubbery and soggy, and the pancakes burnt and cold. My wife is a professional chef and said it's one of the worst breakfasts she's ever had. But we weren't going to say anything. But when the innkeeper came around to take our plates and asked "Are you done," we even pleasantly responded "Yes, thank you." But when she turned away and saw food left on our plates she mumbled "what a waste!" Again, we weren't going to say anything...but we quietly told her "There's food left because it was terrible." Instead of "Sorry you didn't like it" the innkeeper said "You don't know what you're talking about!" Who says this to guests? A professional chef doesn't know bad eggs and pancakes? Even without a professional chef, if a guest doesn't like your food you don't respond like that. She then said you should take a teaspoon of everything first too see if you like it. What?? No, you should expect the food to be edible. Then when I went to check out she held her hand out and said "keys." That's it. So I dropped them on the desk. She said "Have a day." We loved staying at the Montague Inn. It's such a quaint little B&B with a gorgeous view. The grounds are perfect for a wedding, you can just see from the layout where the path/aisle would be to walk down, the front structure, all the space for chairs and a giant empty grass section perfect for a party tent. The Inn would be a great place for the wedding party to stay at. We stayed at the Norman Little room. It's not big, but honestly, since we only stayed for one evening, the size of the room didn't really matter. The most important thing was having an en suite bathroom and we had that. The next was a comfy bed, and we had that, too. The host was very kind and walked us to our room and we asked for additional pillows and she brought them right away. Since we're old and boring, laying in bed to watch Netflix was about the perfect ending to a great evening. Since we've never been here before, we didn't really know what to expect for breakfast. I wasn't expecting gourmet, so seeing hot eggs, potatoes, sausages, pancakes, and all the other basics (bagels, hardboiled eggs, etc.) was quite impressive. Coffee was coffee, k-cups and regular drip. Again, I don't come to a B&B to get fancy coffee, as long as it gets my heart started, that's all I need. I'm not sure what the pricing is like in the summer, but it was an awesome deal during the off-season. I would love to stay there again some time. read more

October 2025 Oh where to begin. My fiance and I drove 14 hours from NJ to visit his daughter her husband and their baby girl. We only get out here 2 times a year so it's special for us My fiance found this place and we both enjoy staying at bed and breakfast places. But this place? Never again! We finally get here and we were greeted nicely by the man at the desk. After a quick tour we were told our room is in the carriage house. We drive up to it and see it's just a run down garage made into rooms. We get our room which was the Dressler room. What a huge disappointment. Run down barely describes it. The carpet was dirty. Worn out old furniture that probably was picked up from a yard sale. The bed was absolutely awful. No joke when I say that when you sit on it you can feel the mattress springs. It was so worn and lumpy and saggy. The pillows were awful too ( we went out the next day and bought two pillows for ourselves). On to the bathroom. Small old vanity. One little shelf over the toilet. Shower/tub was ok as far as shower/tubs go. The bathroom door had to be slammed shut otherwise it opened back up. But it was hard to close and open because it stuck. The towels were so thin and worn out. Not absorbent. I wouldn't use them to dry my dogs. We asked for other towels and did get some that were a little better. The inner curtains were ripped. There's a spotlight that shined into the room at night. Closing the curtains helped a little. The chairs were dirty and worn. The ottoman had no cushion whatsoever. I sat down on it and thought I broke my tailbone The main door into the building was supposed to lock and needed a key. You barely have to put the key in and it opens. A Bobby pin could do the same thing. The lock for the door to the room was just a regular lock like the kind you buy at home depot for $10. No security at all. The thermostat was in the hallway so it's thermostat wars when the other rooms are occupied. Who wants it hot or who wants it cooler. We kept turning it down to keep it comfortable only to have someone else jack it up really high. Annoying Now on to breakfast. We got up a little late the first morning but I had time to check out the food. I saw they had scrambled eggs and pancakes that were definitely not homemade. Just the frozen type. The home fries were also the bagged frozen ones. The sausage was thin little sad looking half pieces. There was cereal, packs of oatmeal and breads. Nothing spectacular or interesting. I cook far better than this. My fiance only drinks decaf coffee and there wasn't any. We had breakfast out each morning we were there. Good cute little place called Bringer Inn a few miles away. Good reasonable food. Try it. You won't be disappointed The whole place needs to be cleaned, painted and refurbished and refinished. And new mattresses and pillows and blankets. It's obvious the owners just pocket the money and don't give a damn about the place or the customers. The library was the only nice room. We didn't get to see upstairs since we were shuffled off to the garage aka carriage house. We'll be going back out to Michigan in the spring to visit again but definitely not staying here. I'd rather stay at a nice regular hotel. read more

My friends and I stayed at the Montague for a night while we visited Frakenmuth. We were greeted by the innkeeper who gave us a tour and lots of historical background. We went out for a few hours and when we came back he had started a fire and gave us some recommendations for food. We travel often and have rarely been greeted with such hospitality. Before we went to bed, he brought up a space heater and made sure we were taken care of. Overall, gorgeous, well maintained home. We'll definitely be back. My wife and I like staying at B&B's and this one was excellent. There was a wedding being set up for the weekend, but we stayed during the week for one night. There are many rooms and this INN is plush with a library, bar and lots of different sized rooms and various amenities. Since we were the only guest staying at the time we were given a room of our choice save the honeymoon suite since it was going to be used for the bride and groom on the weekend. Our room was huge with a gas fireplace and shower with multiple jets. This INN is sprawling and so cool I video taped nearly the entire place. The property is many acres also to walk around. Lastly, the breakfast was plenteous, especially for being just my wife and I dining there. I loved the stay at this inn. There are a few details keeping me from giving it five stars, but they are really nitpicky and if 4.5 were possible, that's the direction I would go. The rooms were charming. There were so many different rooms from a beautiful master suite to the smaller rooms on the third floor and in the servants quarters. We booked online through hotels.com and got a great rate, but also one of the smaller rooms in the back. Turns out that was just fine! The room was more than adequate for one or two nights, with a big bathroom, comfy bed, and PLENTY if heat (it was cold out). Ricardo, the MOD greeted us warmly and spent a lot of time showing is around the place. I'm a bit of a history nerd, so it gave me a chance to really enjoy looking around a mansion built during prohibition without having to worry about not touching things like I would in a museum tour. (See if you can find the secret doors in the library!) We were out late but returned to find the door unlocked for us to come in (Ricardo had said he would lock it behind us when we got back). We spent the night comfy and cozy in the RUST room. Not a lot of light at sunrise... Which we liked... But GORGEOUS views of the sunset over the water... And yes... We saw deer. So why not 5? Previous reviewers have pointed out that this is no longer a B&B, and indeed, the breakfast was only a light Continental breakfast... Not much there. I'm a coffee snob and the coffee tasted... Well... Cheap... I think the coffee maker needs to be cleaned and they should put it a better quality of coffee. Having a key to access the back door after hours as opposed to having to leave it unlocked until the last person comes in would make more sense to me, and would probably make me feel a bit more comfortable with security... Though this is A VERY quiet area. From a housekeeping/maintenance standpoint, the rooms were well kept and maintained for a building as old as this one, but some of the details were missing... Nothing major and nothing that impacted our stay... Just details. read more

So, I arrived late for my stay. Pulled in after midnight. Ricardo, the Innkeeper was waiting on me and couldn't have been nicer. He did a great job of giving me the overview of the property and all of the amenities. He then escorted me to my room and I was very pleased. The bed was one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. The bathroom was awesome. In the morning I had one of the best hot showers I have ever had in a hotel. I don't normally get up to try the free breakfast, but I did this time and I'm glad I did! The food was hot and delicious! I really enjoyed my stay here. If you're expecting modern amenities, or a hotel-like experience, stay clear. The staff were really welcoming - I really liked Ricardo, a very affable, and smart young man. Ask him to show you the secret bunker. This place was build in the 20's during the depression, but it reeked of charm. Yeah, they could've had more breakfast options, but I don't think that's why you stay here. I really wanted to like this place. The fact that we rolled the dice and booked a room here instead of Motel 6 should be evidence of this enough. We've been spoiled, though, by the Select Registry of Inns (www.selectregistry.com), and made the incorrect assumption that everyone who runs a historic old inn knows what the hell they're doing. The downstairs lobby and common-area rooms really were very nice. Tastefully decorated with antiques, loaded with what they like to call "architectural details". The grounds were pretty, too, with a park-like lawn streching down to the river. But all the crown molding in the world could not make up for the atrocity of the bed we had to sleep on. These people fail to understand: most important thing about a "bed and breakfast" is the definitely the "bed" part. The bumbling innkeeper led us upstairs to the room. As we walked into the "luxury" Cass Room, I spied the mattress, and knew immediately we made a mistake. It was the cheapest, thinnest, hardest, most uncomfortable mattress I have ever slept upon (or at least, attempted to sleep upon) in my entire life. It was like a prison bed. Quality bedding is kinda important to me, because I have worse back posture than Shrek. That I don't suffer chronic backpain (yet) is directly related to the fact that, while at home, I sleep on one of the most expensive mattresses that money can buy...a double-pillow top, 19" deep monster of a mattress filled with pixie dust and magic clouds and marshmallows and angel poop. (My car is paid off, but my mattress is NOT.) You can sleep through a NATO air strike on this thing. However, all those years of TLC and preventative care for my back went straight out the window within 30 minutes trying to sleep on this hellish thing at Montague Inn. (Was it quarried locally? Is that the deal?) I've had more comfortable nights sleeping on college dorm room floors (here's looking at you, Louise O!) I finally gave up and shuffled over to the tiny loveseat and spent the night there, my giant ogre feet flopping a good 18" over the edge. I checked out some other unoccupied rooms in the morning, just to see if the Cass Room was an anomoly. To my disgust, most of the other rooms contained TWIN beds, with equally sadistic mattresses. This is supposed to be an inn for middle-aged adults, right? So then why the hell do you have twin beds in every room? Maybe it's "historically accurate" to be totally uncomfortable at night. And maybe they should release some polio virus here, too, just to complete the historical context. And this doesn't even say anything about the bathrooms. Our shower was like a travelling exhibit from the holocaust museum. But I can forgive a quirky old bathroom if I've had a decent night of sleep. Dear Innkeeper: Sell some of those lovely oil paintings and buy some goddamn real beds for your guests. I hate having to slam a place like this...I want it to succeed....but the beds are unacceptably bad. You'll be finding me at Motel 6 next time around, clutching my spunk-riddled pillow and praying that someday, someone at the Montague Inn buys a clue. read more

BEWARE! I ordered a gift certificate from their website. Received a confirmation email and confirmation number telling me it would be mailed in 24 hours. I called them today (19 days) later, only to be told, they can't process online gift certificate orders. Naomi had no apology, and no solution for me. I have stayed here many...many times over the last decade. It used to be a great place...it no longer is. The Montague changed hands...the new owner may not have the experience needed to run a bed and breakfast. The hospitality aspect is gone...beds are horrible..and they no longer serve a real breakfast...it's a continental breakfast you can get at the holiday inn. The name "Bed and Breakfast" implies just that...you will receive neither at the Montague. My suggestion...get rid of the "Bed and Breakfast" name on the sign and change to "Event Center" Focus on events only...you are not a B&B!!!!! They used to have breakfast and dinner...the chef (Chef Scott) was awesome! The new owner decided to get rid of the food aspect of the Inn...that was a bad idea. Chef Scott now runs a successful and yummy restaurant in downtown...see my other reviews for my review of that restaurant. Years ago..when I first started to come to the Montaque the service was impeccable...everything...including the bedding was clean and updated. On my last visit...it literally was the same comforter and bedding from when I first started coming there 10 years ago. I said something to the girl at the desk..she assured me...no it wasn't old bedding. I asked her to come to my room and witness the stains and the rips in my bedding. She did. She then said she don't know how that bedding got on there..that she had changed it herself before we arrived. That was a lie. She proceeds to promise me refund of a percentage of our stay...that never happened. This is a shame...the Montaque was my get away... I came here at least 3 times a year...I will never come back again. I advise against staying here for a traditional B & B stay...it is not that anymore. Booked the Montague Inn because of location and price. Not normally a fan of B&B's, i really was convinced. True it was only an overnight but could see the advantages of staying here instead of a hotel. Ricardo greeted me and had me checked in in no time. Very friendly, efficient and a sense of humor he showed me everything I'd need and answered questions as he guided me to my room. There are different sized rooms and suites (I didn't need anything big but stuck my head in and was impressed...who doesn't love a fireplace?). The building was build in the 20's, but has been updated. Unfortunately, I was here in February (grounds have got to be amazing spring through fall), but the windows and heat were great on a cool Michigan evening. The room was clean and bed very comfortable (great night's sleep). Didn't have time for breakfast but did go down for a cup of coffee and an interesting conversation with the Innkeeper. While talking saw a fox run across the grounds and a bald eagle fly above. The Montague is on 8 acres. I can see why so many wedding are held there. Even though I was here in February, there were plenty of birds and animals enjoying the lake front. Enjoyed my stay and would've liked to have explored more. read more

I had never stayed at a B&B before and my boyfriend and I were looking for something better than just a hotel to reconnect for we live half a country apart. We arrived late for the air line had lost my baggage and were amazed on how beautiful the house was. I had talked to the gentleman working there prior to arriving and he personally took us on a tour of the house and each room so we could pick out which one we liked the best. He was so nice and helpful and quite knowledgeable about the house and its history. My boyfriend and I stayed up half the night hanging out in the various rooms and checking out all the antiques. This place makes you feel like it is actually the early 1900's. We spent the night drinking wine on the back patio area and it was truly awesome.We had the Robert suit. This suit had tall ceilings and a fire place. It was very comfortable and the bed and blankets were top notch. The next morning at breakfast we met other couples and had a great time. This place is really cool and as long as you are open minded, don't have sever back issues to where I'm sure you complain about every bed known to man, and are just looking for a fun experience definitely give this place a try. read more

Very disappointing....that's all I can say. We choose to shop local and stay here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We wanted to support Saginaw. We ate out at a great restaurant in downtown Saginaw, had a drink at another and then...went to the Montague Inn. We had stayed here before with a wonderful experience with the previous owners. However, the Inn has slipped. Our host took awhile to come to the desk to greet us. He was friendly but not professionally dressed. He took us on a brief tour but it was definitely short of spectacular - clean up the rooms you wish to show - i.e. the bar with the "collection" of wines, etc..., clean up the secret "room" behind the bookshelves. No guest wants to see where you store toilet tissue and paper towel. Next we traversed up 3 flights of stairs...the stairs were not clean - use a hand vac to keep them clean all the time instead of watching videos on your laptop. The carpet had rolls in the hallways. Does liability from someone tripping on these make you consider getting your carpet stretched and in good condition? We had the "Romantic Package" with a room with a fireplace. Well a fireplace really isn't romantic if you can not turn it on - "Not until November" the host told us. So we paid for a black hole in the wall. The wine was cheap, as were the chocolates and multicolored daisies sitting in colored water. BUY LOCAL Montegue! Support your local businesses! Use a local wine, a local candy and a local florist! Give your customers MORE than cheap! But it gets even better when I hop into the shower at night - you guessed it - NO HOT WATER! No one to contact. We wait until morning and try again. Still no hot water and no shower. We decide to give up at that point. We eat the mediocre breakfast - the corned beef hash was good - coffee fair and coffee pot not working with cold coffee in it. All the other guests dining with us were equally disappointed in the Inn and therefore in Saginaw. It's too bad, we are working so hard to work with businesses in Saginaw together to build a good reputation and keep it. However, with experiences like this, guests to our area are left with nothing but disappointment. Even the 30% discount on our rate for the lack of hot water inconvenience will not cause us to return. I truly hope you take our suggestions seriously; they are the best gift a business owner could receive. Now all you have to do is act upon it. Best wishes. read more
