Dr Chan and the Technician, Feli, were professional and very helpful. They responded calmly and respectfully when asked both clinical and financial questions. No judgment. It was clear to me that they were there to help. The front desk, however, became very defensive and annoyed when I asked questions. They even seemed angry. What couldn't improve? I should've trusted the negative reviews instead of giving them the benefit of doubt. Funny enough, my baby was not even seen at this hospital. I went online searching for vets in my area and this one came up as one of the best. I went on their website and I scheduled an appointment for 4 PM this afternoon. I was coming from work so I called at 3:57 PM to let them know that I was running about five minutes late. I was told that as long as I made it by 4:10 PM they would be able to see me. She offered to reschedule me for Monday, but I needed to get my pit seen today so I told her that I will make it before 4:10 PM. I drove like an absolute maniac because I was worried I wouldn't make it but luckily I did. I ran inside and was directed to the main entrance where they had the receptionist. I walked up to the receptionist and I told her I had an appointment at 4 o'clock and that I had called about being a few minutes late. She mumbled something I could not hear and went inside to check on something. After about a minute, she came back to tell me that they had an emergency since speaking to me over the phone and that both of the vets available are working on that emergency and that i will have to reschedule regardless of the fact that I drove like a maniac and made it in before the time they told me to be there. She followed with no apologies or no signs of concern for my dog that could also be hurting. So what I'm wondering is, what are the odds that some crazy emergency occurred between 3:58 PM and 4:07 PM that you could not see coming? And, if you had already spoken to me on the phone and told me that I would need to rush my appointment, couldn't you have the common decency to at least give me a call back and tell me that an emergency occurred and that my dog would not be able to be seen? This hospital is incredibly careless and I don't believe they truly care for helpless animals. You could have at the very least been apologetic about this. read more

I came here regularly because it was convenient. I always felt like they did an "Ok" job at best, but it was convenient. This most recent visit was my last. My dog has been drinking more water and we were worried about kidney issue we took her here and they ordered a panel of blood tests. First at the visit I asked the doctor to check her ears since I missed a follow up for an ear infection. She said she would during the blood test and then forgot. I asked the tech and she said the doctor had already moved on to an ultra sound and would not be able to do it. I said what if I wait and she said that "Bailey was really scared and it was a no fear vet so we needed to come back another time". It felt like an excuse at the time, since she did not start with it. I then mentioned that it cost another visit, she said she would reach out to the manager about a complimentary visit and get back to me. I never received an email updating me on the complimentary visit. The labs were supposed to come on that Monday and I waited no email no call. I called Wednesday and asked if they could at least send me the labs. They said not until a doctor calls and they would ask a doctor. (Kaiser makes labs immediately available so I don't know why they would'nt here especially since they obviously have operational issues). A doctor finally called Thursday which is too long when you are worried about you're dog. The information they gave me was that we suspect Chronic Kidney Disease that it is very early. I should put my dog on a prescription diet and that we could do an ultra sound. That was it. She seemed disinterested and rushed. I was processing the information so I did not ask a lot of follow up questions. However, my expectation for these calls from a vet/medical professional minimum. This is why I suspect chronic kidney disease, these values are still really low. This is why they might be so low, this is what I would expect to see in the future if it is in fact chronic kidney disease. We should put her on a prescription diet. (Check she did do this.) We should follow up on these tests in x num days/months. Other than food, there are x medicines we could use this is when/how/why we would prescribe them. Since we only suspect here are some alternatives, that we can test for or why we rule them out/wouldn't test for them .i.e. Cushing Disease (After talking to another vet, he mentioned this) We can also do an ultra sound of her kidneys. Here is what we would be looking for and why we would perform these tests.( She sort of did this but it was just "we could do an ultra sound and see kidney function") This is barely helpful information. Will it make it immediately clear this is chronic kidney disease, does it have the potential to help us identify some other cause? Why would we do it what are the outcomes? Lastly, expectations of how this will affect her life if it is in fact Chronic Kidney Disease. I asked about this and the answer was "Hard to say, I can't give a range". This could be put in a range and with some clarity for example many dogs live very long lives after this diagnosis with proper treatment I have seen dogs live 5 years, but you do have to be aware that there are cases where we see rapid declines and sometimes it's months or within a year it's really important that you keep an eye on your dog and if anything changes you book a follow up immediately. Here are some symptoms I would keep an eye out for just in case..... Anyway, I have intermittently taken her to Berkeley Dog and Cat hospital for emergency visits. They always handle with this level of care/professionalism, but if anyone knows of a vet closer that cares please let me know. read more

All went well! Dr. Pogrel very kind and reassuring and he prescribed exactly what was needed. At same time we had all vaccinations updated. He answered all our questions and never tried to "upsell" us on any other treatment or service. He is now our dog's vet if needed or anyone asks since our previous house call vet of 35+ years has retired. read more

This "Fear Free" vet clinic traumatized my cat. I brought my cat in for routine shots and agreed to pay for their up-sell of a wellness exam with blood and urine draws. I held my cat and fed him treats for the shots and blood draw. The first shot was fine, the cat all relaxed and focused on treats. The second shot the vet tech jabbed him twice in the wrong place, missing each time. My placid even-tempered cat started to get anxious. The incompetent vet tech then took him to another room. Not a wise move. After a wait the staff told me that my cat had scratched the tech and would have to be tranquilized with gabapentin before future visits. Not simple or cheap. The vet tech came back with my cat. She had a scratch on her cheek near her eye. Very scary but the mark of an somebody not trained or maybe just not competent to handle cats. She had finally managed to give the second shot and got a blood draw. But failed to get the needle drawn urine sample. My poor cat was totally freaked by being mishandled. And now he's mislabeled as a difficult cat that requires tranquilizing before vet visits. I've had fierce and difficult cats, this one is not. Avoid this place. read more

The whole team at Montclair Veterinary Hospital is fantastic. We had an unexpected litter of German Shepherd Puppies (yes, we waited too long to spay our female - mistakes were made - we've been responsibly placing the wonderful puppies in new qualified homes). The entire team came together to help with vaccines, flea/tick/parasite prevention, health checks, and health certificates. With 9 puppies and the mother you can imagine it has been quite the experience and I could not be more pleased with their level of communication and care for the dogs. The team has been diligent in sending records and communicating with the new owners. Everyone is very happy. I am so happy they are my local vet. read more

I love the people that work there, especially Dr Salinas, DVM. What I don't like is how much they charge. Just came back from a visit & they wanted to chard $20ish for a wound wash that I can get at RiteAid for $11-$24, depending on size of bottle, plus $27 "dispensing fee". I rarely allow them to fill prescriptions, know how much they charge, but had never seen the dispensing fee before. VetnCare is the corporation that owns them & corporate policy is to refuse to fax prescriptions or renew via fax, claiming they can't guaranty the quality of the meds. I get it if it's some internet company, but for known pharmacies, like Costco, RiteAid, CVS, Walgreens..., come on..., it's just a money grab. As our dog is 16 yrs old, we'll stay with them for now, but we will shop around with our next dog. read more

The second visit my dog was extremely anxious and refused to go back with the technician for his shots. They offered to do it outside to make him comfortable and they were so so so kind. It is very sad to see so many similar reviews for a place that really was great. Have been going here for years and was very happy. Then about two years ago things started getting worse - price increases, - appointments being cancelled, -taking WEEKS to be able to get an appointment for urgent issues But the big red flag was that slowly a number of their vets (some truly amazing and life saving) started to leave. That is always a bad sign when good people leave a workplace. So the hunt was on to find a new vet and as many will state out of the blue they closed down and like many others I had an appointment for an ear infection. Luckily was able to get into Walnut Creek Vet Hospital. They saw all of my animals right away and fixed the issue. In addition they provided a solution that has helped prevent ear infections from coming back where at Montclair I had been going for years with the same issue. Hard pass and what a shame! read more

This review could be much more damaging due to the obvious poor decisions, outcome, and lack of accountably and costs, but I will share the most basic facts instead: About four weeks ago (September 2024), my puppy underwent a routine annual exam and vaccination appointment at 11:30 am. After 5:30 pm, my puppy was released sedated, traumatized, and unable to walk up the stairs. The bill was over $700.00. I had to take off work the next day to monitor her. It was 48 hours before she was back to normal. Furthermore, they failed to do all the vaccinations she went in for because they said my puppy was too anxious. They said she tried to bite staff (FYI, she had to wear a muzzle, so I do not understand how she remained a treat -mid-sized cattle dog mix) They billed us for sedation and ear wash that I did not ask for or take her to the vet to get. The business manager is unreasonable and defensive. If you have a problem, it will most likely not be resolved. Her approach is to assume that they did nothing wrong, regardless. I can't find another vet who believes that leaving a dog traumatized at the vet from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to calm it enough to administer a routine vaccination is a good idea. Last week I took my puppy to a different vet to finally get her vaccinations completed. She still HATED getting the vaccinations, but we were in and out in about 30 minutes if you count waiting time. She left the vet jumping and wagging her tail for treats. I left with a much more reasonable bill at about $120.00. She did not have an ear infection anymore so I guess we did not need the ear wash that she was sent home with. We have not used any of the stuff pushed on us to pay for. I will never return to Montclair vet again unless I become aware of a major change. read more

Sweet staff, Truly. Wonderful, gifted owner vet who suddenly helped diagnose a long-suffering cat when disorganized (in some cases fraudulent) earlier places failed to do so. Attentive vet techs as well. Only real complaints here are that they still don't offer weekend hours and fees, like the rest of vet industry trends, can be high. Hoping any small chain partnerships into which the place enters/has entered will only create a lovely synergy that is beneficial and fair to all: the pets, their humans, and the staff. read more

This review is based on my recent post-surgery experience at Montclair Vet. Long, but hopefully helpful story ahead that I hope anyone considering surgery here will take the time to read... I brought my 5 year old cat here after moving to the area and noticing a small but growing lump under her skin. After consulting with the vet, we decided to remove it and send in for testing. - Day of surgery: After dropping off my cat in the morning, I get a call from the surgeon saying that everything went well. I pick my cat up in the evening and take her home. - 2 weeks later: I take my cat in for a follow-up. A tech comes to get her and removes her stitches as I wait in the lobby. When she comes back, I ask about test results and she says nothing has come in yet. - Another week later: I still haven't heard anything about results. I call and am told someone will call me back soon. - Another week goes by: Still nothing. I call again and am told I'll get a call back that day. - A couple days later: We're now a month post-surgery. I get an email from the surgeon. The lump was a sarcoma. Unfortunately, clean margins weren't achieved and testing also suggests possible lymphoma. I'm given a list of nearby vets to contact for chemo treatment. Obviously, I'm gutted. My young and seemingly healthy cat may have not one, but two types of cancer. I make an appointment at VCA Encina for the following week. - Oncologist meeting @ VCA: We kick of the convo addressing the possible lymphoma: the info forwarded from Montclair doesn't even indicate they tested for this. The oncologist emailed Montclair asking for clarification but didn't hear back (not surprised). We go over treatment options for the sarcoma and decide to go with a second revision surgery in a couple weeks. - Before the 2nd surgery: The oncologist emails me that she called Montclair and was able to confirm that the comment about lymphoma was indeed incorrect. I'm grateful but what. the. heck. - Day of 2nd surgery @ VCA: Drop my cat off, get a call from the surgeon in the afternoon that all went well, take her home later that day. - 5 days after surgery: The oncologist emails me that preliminary results are in. No cancer has been detected so far. - 2 days later (1 week after surgery): The oncologist calls me. Final results are in. Clean margins achieved and no cancer detected. I'm beyond thrilled. - 2 weeks after surgery: Time for the follow-up. A tech takes me and my cat to a room, then takes my cat back to remove her stitches. A few minutes later, she comes back with my cat and the surgeon, who asks how everything has been and we briefly talk about options if the sarcoma were to return down the road. Why I'm giving a 1-star review: - Terrible post-surgery follow-up. At Monclair, it took a month and multiple calls to get someone to share test results with me. And in the end, all I got was an email (with wrong results at that). At VCA, I got an email within 5 days, and a phone call with final results in a week. I also got to meet with the surgeon at the follow-up instead of just sit in a lobby. - No attempt was made to reach out to me after VCA made Montclair aware that incorrect test results were given to me. I know mistakes happen, but a phone call and/or email apologizing for basically giving my cat a false death sentence would've been appreciated. - I'm also including pictures after stitches were removed from the surgery site at Montclair and VCA. I'm no surgeon myself and perhaps different techniques were used, but I had to keep a cone on my cat for an additional 2 weeks after the stitches came out from Montclair. The site looked gnarly. After removing stitches at VCA, she had a cone on for just one more day and the site, despite being 4x the size, was neat and clean. Overall, I'm sorry to write a lengthy negative review, but my post-surgery experience here was pretty bad, and after going to VCA, I'm very aware of how much better things could've gone. I hope Montclair makes efforts to improve in this area for future customers. read more

Clearly their priority was not the animals they claim to care so much about. Just really hope they stay true to their email and send me the records of my two pets who I've been taking to this vet for 10+ years. We received an email at 5 pm today (April 22 2022) that the practice is permanently closed as of April 22, 2022. No details whatsoever about why, or about why there was no advance notice. They "recommend transferring your pet's care to our local partner hospitals" in San Francisco or Kensington. We've been taking our cat here since we adopted him in 2009 at age 2. During most of those 12+ years I would have given a four star review, having had experiences that ranged from three stars to five stars. Most of the vets have been good to excellent. However, in the past three years or so there has seemed to be more staff turnover and, despite dealing with some good individual vets, there have been times when we were less convinced that the practice was always acting in our cat's best interest, rather than the best interests of Montclair Veterinary Hospital. Now this unexplained closure with no advance warning. I believe that in medical or therapeutic practices this is called "abandonment of client" or something like that. Do veterinaries have any professional or ethical standards that cover this sort of behavior? read more

In 2011 I gave MVH five stars. Unfortunately I've reduced them to one. When owned and operated by Gary Richter, this was a wonderful business who worked with their clients, tried to make the animals as comfortable as possible and felt like a personal, family business. Fast forward 10 years and an ownership change, this business has crashed. They weren't able to offer any urgent care visits for me (even though I'd been with them for a decade) and their website now says they aren't accepting new clients. They refused to partner with me to support a frightened dog, and the manager of their vet techs (or so he claimed) got into a verbal argument with me in the exam room, with the door open to the waiting room about processes that we had been following with my dog for over 10 years. When I asked to speak directly with a vet, he refused to get one for me. The vets that I liked to work with have moved on to other locations, as will I. It's too bad as they had been a mainstay in Montclair. read more

Dr. Moulton and the vet techs always told me what they were going to do and asked permission before everything. I'm so, so, so delighted with the renewal of Montclair Vet, where I've been taking my dog since I adopted her in 2014. I'm so glad to see that the former vets and vet techs are back -- and the clear improvement that happened when they reopened is obvious to me. This wonderful group of vets and vet techs know my dog -- and they are always aware of her longstanding healthcare issues (they know about her birth defect and her 2018 spinal surgery). They are happy to book a nail trim for me at a moment's notice to make sure she gets the care she needs. Dr Moulton has been my go-to vet at this clinic. She provides a great balance between compassion and competence that is typically hard to achieve. I have 2 cats with unique challenges. A young male who has been epileptic for some time, and a darling old female who, well - is gently fading away with age. I took my new puppy in for her first visit with the vet. I was in the waiting room for 20 minutes and finally without being acknowledged. I finally approached the receptionist who didn't make eye contact and acted as if I were bothering him. I was finally placed into an exam room, I was met by a vet tech who did not introduce herself as a vet tech. Another 30 minutes elapsed before the vet entered the room. She did not do a thorough examination or allow time for questions as it turned out the vet had just come from euthanizing another dog. Had I known I would've rescheduled because imagine she was pretty devastated. Their failure to communicate was outstanding. When I receive the final billfor over $500 for a first visit. Medicate the flea medication they sold me was overpriced and incorrect for my dog size. Would I go there again never! read more

Like many others, I was dismayed to say the least when Montclair Vet Hospital closed abruptly on April 22, 2022. My dog (Scout) became ill the Monday after the closure, April 25, 2022 and we ended up at OakVet on 7th downtown. Sadly, Scout passed a week and a half later (long story, unpreventable). I adopted a new pup in April 2023, and with some trepidation, returned to Montclair Vet Hospital. Front staff is great, techs have been great and caring as well - already know my dog's name on sight. I am very happy with Dr. Moulton - knowledgeable and caring. Happy to say that my return to Montclair Vet Hospital has been very positive. read more

I was pleased that I was able to go into the office for the visit - owners were not allowed on prior visits due to Covid - and I was able to ask questions about my dog's health. Very nice facility that seems to have most things (if not everything) that you would need for your little furry one. The facility is very nice and new looking. Staff members and the vet was very nice as well. I am actually considering transferring my fur baby over here from her previous vet. Long story short, my dog got bit while we were in AZ for Thanksgiving. She got sutured up and a drainage tube placed in her leg. Because of scheduling conflict, we had to travel back home and could not follow up with the vet hospital in AZ before we had left. I called out vet's office to which they wouldn't take her in because "they were booked" for the day and the drainage tube needed to come out. That is when I found Montclair Veterinary Hospital on a list East Bay SPCA had given me. Not only did Montclair Veterinary Hospital give me a same day appointment, but it's actually closer to my home AND the staff seemed genuinely caring for my dog. We've been taking our pets to East Bay SPCA for several years now. But TBH, I didn't like the way their staff handled our phone call. He basically sounded like he didn't care about what was going on with my dog. So I am looking forward to taking our pets here ! read more

Being the Duke of a veterinary hospital is not all it's cracked up to be. It really means you have sick kids, and that's where having a great vet can make all the difference. We've been coming here since moving to Oakland in 2008 and Dr. Richter recently supervised the treatment of little Maddie's (http://media4.ct.yelpcdn.com/photo/DF46ecWBk48YIVK1ygw9IQ/l) third cancerous tumor. With no evidence of metastasis, we hope it's the last! *paws crossed* Dr. Richter is great about explaining the different options available and patiently answered all of our questions regarding this treatment as well as for any other issues that have come up with Maddie or her four kitty siblings over the past 3 years. They are very gentle when doing any procedures and have gained our and our pets' trust. Although Maddie does hate going to the vet, once there she doesn't cringe and hide under a bench like she did with the Oncologist at BAVS in San Leandro. I have to also give kudos to all the other folks here. From vet techs to the front office, everyone is super friendly and they dote on my little girl. read more

We joined Montclair vet several months ago when we got a new pup, and we have been there several times since. The staff is super friendly, courteous and professional. It has been easy to get appointments as well. I have called several times with questions (as I'm a new pet owner) and they have been so gracious, supportive and accommodating. When my pup had an emergency during the day, we were able to come right by and drop him off for observation. The staff here really loves your pet. My pup is greeted every time by name, and given lots of love and cuddles. He loves coming here! We have had care by Dr. Klein and Dr. Moulton, who are so wonderful, kind and knowledgeable. Their advice has been sound, practical, and spot-on! We recently had our pup neutered here, and the surgical and post-surgical experience was great. I took my dog here for the first time and had a great experience! Was able to get an appointment for the next day, and didn't wait more than 2 minutes in the lobby before being going back to a room to chat with the tech & vet. Dr. P was kind and knowledgable, gave recommendations for some gentler chew toys and cheaper flea medicine for my pup that we could switch to when we run out. Pricing is consistent with what I've seen at other vets in the area. A lot of these reviews mention the business closing about a year ago, but as a new patient, I have absolutely no concerns. I have had poor experiences with other local vets, and when I couldn't get my dog in to this vet a year ago (makes sense now), I started taking her to a vet all the way in Castro Valley. Very happy to have good pet care much closer to home, and to be able to get appointments so quickly. read more

After having seen my dog several times for digestive disorders , following surgery to remove a tooth, MVH gave her a pain killer that irritated her stomach so much that after two days she stopped eating and drinking and started pooping pools of blood . When I called to ask them to see her they said they didn't have time for a week But they had Time to present me with the remainder of a $2,000. Bill for tooth cleaning and extraction. I had to take her to the vet emergency in Berkeley where they took very good care of her. They hospitalized her immediatly. I find this behavior callous and irresponsible especially considering, it was their mistake in the first Place that caused this Tramatic and costly situation. I would never go there again. read more

Do not come here. Unless you enjoy being verbally abused, and charged outlandish amounts of money for services you could get elsewhere. I've been coming here for over 10 years and the only reason I stayed so long was bc I eventually found Dr. Cynthia Lynn who I adored. But now that she's gone, I see no reason to stay or to hold back my feelings about this place any longer. The reviews about the receptionists being rude and talking crap about clients is true. I've experienced it first hand while waiting in a room for the vet to come years ago. I overheard a doctor talking crap WITH his staff about a client and it's no wonder the receptionists feel they can belittle you, or scoff at you while talking to them. This toxic environment trickles down from the management. I won't generalize and say all the receptionists are terrible, but MOST of my interactions over the phone have been UNPLEASANT and/or INFURIATING. Dr. Richter has been busy building his empire and getting voted America's favorite vet, but he does so without compassion for his clients. I stopped taking my furbabies to him when he stopped showing compassion for them years ago. He could not be bothered with them. Luckily, I found Dr. Lynn who was always kind and caring and thoroughly checked out my pets. But their prices have skyrocketed over the years - no doubt to make their offices look as lavish as they do. I would rather go to a vet with no bells and whistles that offered genuine care for my furbabies at a reasonable price than go to a place that looks like a spa. My furbabies don't care what the place looks like, and frankly, neither do I. Every time I walk into this fancy place, I think "So this is where my money has been going all these years - straight to the Empire." Do yourself a favor - go somewhere else. They don't need any more of our hard earned money. read more
