All things considered, you never want to have to find a way to cremate your pet. But when you do, you could not do better than Allied Pet Crematory. I called 10 different businesses in the larger Bay Area/Northern California area. The time to process ranged from 1 week to 1 month (during which time your pet waits in a freezer). Some only offered UPS to return your pet to you. APC was 24-48 hours, and communicated to me via text when I could come pick up -- which in our case was a day and a half after I dropped off our beloved dog. The intake process was very calming and empathetic. It takes place by appointment, in a dedicated meeting room with the owner. You are able to review urns, keepsakes, and ask questions about the process in an unhurried but efficient process. There was no pressure to upsell, however, the many options were of high quality and reasonable price. They only offer private/individual cremation, which means you receive only your own pet's ashes. Apparently in the cremation business this is the source of much corruption, and you'll find many practices of putting a paper tag on your pet to hopefully follow them after you leave them. I was told by another crematory that if it's a business that employs many employees, it's very possible that your tag may get misplaced and the ashes you receive are not actually those of your own pet. One business charges an extra $450 to "witness" your pet going in to the crematorium (to ensure you are getting the right ashes). All charge more to "witness" the process, which apparently is a way to monitor for the errors in pet tracking that take place behind closed doors. I spoke with APS about this, and felt very confident in the integrity of the process here. They are an owner operated business. Your pet is personally received by the person who completes the cremation. Very little to no room for error. Especially given the turn around time. The process came with a nice cedar box, which was personally engraved with my chosen inscription for a very reasonable fee. I also purchased a paw print, which was came out beautifully. They provide a certificate of cremation for free (for comparison, at another Bay Area business a certificate is an add-on and costs $50, which honestly is disgusting. It's little more than a nice receipt and yet I appreciate having it. As for the many other crematoriums, all I can say is that gouging people in grief like this is by charging $50 for a printed piece of paper attesting to a several hundreds of dollars service they already paid for is lower than low). Also complimentary is a small envelope with your pets name, a clear window, and a memory keepsake of their locks of fur. It is a really thoughtful process with mementos like these. Don't look anywhere else, this is the place for your loved family member. APS offers a respectful, honest, reasonably-priced, and truly quality experience for your loved pet's final arrangements. read more
