It's never easy to put a loved furry member of the family to sleep. Wally was having a good day the day Cheryl was scheduled to come to the house. As much as I wanted to reschedule, I knew it wasn't fair to Wally to keep him alive for me. I spend a beautiful 24 hours with him. When Cheryl came to the home I had her walk in (door unlocked) , so I didn't leave Wally's side. He was snuggled up next to me. Cheryl made the experience very peaceful and calm. This is overdue. I can't express how much this whole team helped me after my tiny fur baby passed away. I was scared to hand her over because I didn't trust that I'd actually get her ashes back (I fear some places lump all pet ashes together). I called all over the bay area and no one gave me enough confidence until I spoke to Dr. Ramos from P.E.R. She actually spent a lot of time hearing me out, then making calls to ensure all of my fears were just that- fears. I was treated with respect and kindness. It took me weeks to brace myself to let my beloved Maui go. He was 15 years old, had lost most of his hearing and smell, was nearly blind and had started getting dementia, wandering around aimlessly and getting stuck in corners. Still I couldn't bear to let him go. My husband who was also a veterinarian, passed seven years ago. He loved Maui and often had Maui on his lap when I drove us around. Maui was my link to my husband. I knew how difficult euthanasia is to a person who loves animals, because my husband dread that part of his job.
