Monte Carlo is a good value hotel for the price point, which for us was $94 USD per night all in. The room we had was functional and they have a great location for our food touring in the Markham and surrounding areas. The rate came with a free basic and ok self-serve breakfast also. The hotel was totally booked during our 3 night stay and most of the patrons were ethnically diverse as is the Markham area in general. Parking is plentiful and free. But the hotel is not perfect. Because we drove here, I was able to bring my own down pillow for a change and from what I saw of the bouncy polyester pillows, that was a personal good call and I slept well. Wife thought the pillows were adequate for her though. The heating was nice and quiet and that's a plus. On the downside, the toilet seat was quite small and squat (short height) making its use awkward. Even our cruise ship toilets never evoked such a reaction from us. It's almost a show-stopper but tolerable for a few days. Staff was friendly and courteous. On the last night, one young lady staffer in fact also did a good job for me by getting an annoying guy next door to turn his TV down at midnight. Overall, I would be ok on returning due to good value but I would also recommend checking out other competition in the area as well. read more

This was an older hotel. It had everything, the basic necessities but the problem was the bathroom. There was a crack on the tiles and the main thing was that the bath tub was half of my height. Yes, I'm petite, but my mom who is above 5ft struggled too. So, I was thinking, it'll be hard for petite people and kids to go over the tub. There's no grip and it gets really slippery so I was always very careful to go over. I know it is an older hotel but I'm just thinking of all the other people who will struggle with it. I know tubs can be nice for those who use it but I haven't seen one that high up. Another downside is that every time I turn around to grab toilet paper while sitting on the seat, I always hit the corner of the table. The angle was very odd and everyone, tall or tiny would need to watch out otherwise you'll get bruises everywhere. The good thing was that the bed and pillows were comfy! read more

This was a new experience for me. This hotel just tried to tell me that I had to provide service dog documentation for Biscuit, my service dog. The Canadian law is almost identical to the American law in that there is no certification or documentation that is standard or required, some doctors provide it based on the type of dog you have, if it's for a severe medical condition. I tried to explain this to the man at the front desk, he then told me that I had to provide it and that because they are a private establishment, he could refuse me. I explained to him that because they are a business open to the public, what he said is not true. He then brought out a memo that said three things, either they need to have a visible disability, two, needed to provide a service dog card if they had one, or three if they had a non-visible disability, they needed to explain that the dog is task trained, and the dog needs to be under control at all times. He thought it had to be all three, not one of the three. I tried to explain that to him and he told me I was wrong. Then, when I explained my dog was trained in the US and many trainers don't provide that, not to mention some Canadian trainers don't and that owner trained service dogs (which would then not have a trainer certification) are acceptable in Canada, he said that the Canadian law didn't apply to me, because I'm not Canadian. I asked him if laws applied to people in Canada, and he said yes, but not to me because I'm American. I then asked to speak to the manager, who apologized and explained that they do ask for documentation, though it's not required. She just asked that I check in with the dog, though the manager who checked me in saw Biscuit. I literally got told today by someone who doesn't understand the law, that the law they didn't know existed couldn't apply to me, and he was exceptionally nasty about it. read more

There's a few shops I like in Markham, and this is generally a less expensive area as compared to the other suburbs, which is how I found this place. The lobby area and conference area seemed nicer than I expected, especially considering the great rate I got (w/ the exchange rate, it ended up being less than $100 usd/night). New hotel. The Riviera room is spacious, with a 3-person couch, 2 LCD TVs, a gas fireplace, and a Jacuzzi, along with the normal amenities such as safe, microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker, iron and iron board, and hair dryer. Free parking, continental breakfast and Wifi (no password needed). There is nothing luxurious in the room, but things are there, functional and tasteful. I know they are nice now because they are *new*, but I am rating the hotel room now when it is new. Room rate is reasonable for this really big room. We did dine at the Menaggio Ristorante Grill and Wine Bar inside of the inn. It is okay but a bit overpriced. Please see my separate review of the restaurant under its separate listing. I can only review the conference center in the basement but the staff and main floor ambiance were very nice. As for the conference room, it is next to the gym which makes it smell like sweat a little bit. The room itself is nice with a very good projector and free water and notepads. They offered cookies and coffee as well. Not sure if that comes standard. read more

Our pad for 3 nights during a visit to Markham recently. A relatively new hotel addition in the area. Convenient to most major travel arteries, and less than 30 minutes drive into Toronto depending on traffic. Upon driving in, the signs actually direct you to the back of the hotel where the free parking lot is. Through that back entrance, you can walk to the lobby/check-in desk area up front. Although there's a front door by the lobby, we never used it and never prioritized figuring out if one could drive up that entrance. Staff were efficient and courteous. Our rooms were spacious and clean. Pleasant enough decor, if somewhat generic and unremarkable. In this area, there won't be much of a view. LCD television, lots of drawer and closet space, big mirror by the door. Beds were comfortable enough but nothing special. Free wi-fi that we used regularly, a typical amenity for hotels in this area. They have a restaurant downstairs that we didn't try. Also a small, 24-hour fitness room that a member of the group did make use of. Their pool is oddly located right by the lobby. All in all, a good stay in a solidly average hotel, at average pricing for the area. read more

Came here for a seminar. Their built in big screen was not working so they had the small stand portable screen. The screen picture looks warped and the screen kept springing closed. Very distracting and unattractive. The audio was fine. Washroom stalls are tight. Friendly staff. We had a buffet style sandwich salad table which was ok. The coffee cups are small and disposable, no option for cup/saucer. I had to go in and out of the room to refill my small coffee cup. Red rose black tea only. My favourite place to stay, I come here maybe once a month. There's a lady at the check in who's always really really nice but I haven't seen her in awhile. The basic single queen/king bed room is the best price. For the best experience I have to recommend the Deluxe Mezzanine Jacuzzi Suite. They have a loyalty program and discount room packages on their website. Always really clean, great environment, furniture isn't too outdated and they usually have complimentary breakfast, also free wifi. read more

Like the other reviews, Monte Carlo's layout is a bit awkward. I was aware of this prior, so while my parents parked and unloaded, I walked from the back parking lot and to the desk in the "front". By far the cleanest hotel out of all the value hotels I've stayed during this roadtrip. However, we couldn't get over the odor in the hallway of the fifth floor. Smelled like a sweaty locker room which lingered into our room. Did somebody work out downstairs and decide to stop drop 'n roll all the way back? There was a car parked in the lot which kept blaring its alarm throughout the night. I didn't try their complimentary continental breakfast but according to my father, he said it was the least expansive out of the places we've stayed out. Apparently hot items like eggs and bacon were not included and were extra charge. We needed a place to rest our weary heads before heading back on the road. Besides the egregious car alarm that was out of their hands, it was the sweat smell that I just couldn't get over, thus gets knocked down a star. read more

What a deal - for $129 we got a room with two double beds, free wifi, free parking, use of the saltwater pool, a continental breakfast, a discount voucher for the in-house resto, use of the 24 hour gym, and two adult tickets to the zoo! Beat that! You can also get discounted child tickets from them. Plus, the tickets allow you to beat the line at the zoo. The rooms include a fridge, a safe (albeit inconveniently located), a flat-screen television, a microwave and a coffee maker plus sufficient bedding for the permanently cold (why don't all hotels provide duvets?). The toiletries were fine, nothing special. You can put your own food and drinks in the fridge. Our friends upgraded to the suite for $30/night. Fantastic front-desk service. Nabil could not have been more welcoming or more polite. Such a nice introduction to the hotel. I needed a device charger - no problem (thanks, Jane!). We asked to get a room near to our traveling companions - no problem. Asked for a dinner recommendation - no problem. read more

Had my wedding reception in this hotel and the staff did a superb job. The room for the night was included in the package and we upgraded for the Juliet suite where the bed was on the mezzanine floor and jacuzzi and living area was on the first floor. Also booked the night before to get everything ready for the wedding and the staff gave us a discount as well. The food for the reception was excellent and service for the staff was top notch. Would definitely recommend this place and rental of hall. It is small but fit my wedding size of 110 comfortably with dance floor. read more

This hotel is the only irresponsible hotel I have ever seen! Please take a look at what happened: I booked 3 nights at this hotel. Before I checked in, I asked the front desk if I could refund the last night. The front desk said yes but asked me to contact Expedia to check out, and then I called immediately I contacted Expedia, and Expedia has sent me an email to contact the hotel. Then 2 months passed and I still haven't received a refund, I contacted Expedia many times and they also helped me send many emails to the hotel with no reply. An email replied two months later said that I could not get a refund. It said that the email at that time was replied, and it was not confirmed whether I could check out! Okay, here comes the important point: the hotel I booked can be fully returned, and I asked the front desk before checking in, and she also said that it can be refunded! Then I called the hotel many times, and they all shirked their responsibilities and said that the money should be refunded by Expedia, saying that they did not reply to the email at that time! Isn't it your responsibility for not replying to emails? The hotel has never responded to emails. Finally, Expedia called the hotel directly. The hotel manager directly shirked responsibility and said that I only saw the email now and I will not refund the money! Is not responding to emails a reason for you to shirk your responsibility? Is it my fault that you guys don't respond to emails and I don't get a refund? I have contacted Expedia and the hotel many times, and finally the hotel has been passing the responsibility to Expedia! friends! Please carefully consider booking this hotel! If you have any problems, the hotel will not try to solve it for you, it will only shirk responsibility! I am so disappointed in the way this hotel does things! We stayed 2 nights - a Saturday and a Sunday. Check-in and check-out were smooth. The room was immaculately clean, but rather small for a section of greater Toronto that has an abundance of wide-open spaces. Much larger suites, however, are available. The room's other shortcoming (aside from the fact that the coffee maker didn't work and the pressure rod holding the shower curtain fell down) was lack of sufficient electrical outlets for today's working traveler. My wife and I each had a computer and a phone plus her iPad requiring five outlets for overnight charging. We captured a few outlets by dragging the very heavy night tables away from the walls and unplugging the night lamps, and by unplugging the hair dryer in the bathroom. Breakfast, which comes with the room, was adequate, although the numerous breadbaskets were inexplicably covered over with napkins making them look like miniature coffins. The same space becomes a restaurant and bar at dinner (7 to 10), which we did not try. Otherwise, there is no food available, except for a single vending machine with a limited selection of potato chips and candy bars. The lobby layout is odd - the reception desk fronts onto Warden Avenue, which has largely industrial traffic, but the guest entrance is in the rear, convenient to the parking lot. The entire main floor has the appearance of a dowdy old aunt who can't bear to give away her once-fashionable clothes. I though perhaps the chairs, carpets, and curtains had been purchased at an auction sale from another hotel that had long ago been refurbished or perhaps torn down. There was a distinctly out of place fake fireplace with a fake fire, and an army of dingy, tired old potted plants that hadn't been cared for in a long time. The fitness center had out-of-date equipment: two treadmills from the nineties, several weighted pulley systems that were missing essential parts rendering them useless, and a small set of weights with no bench or chair, which greatly limited the types of workouts one could do. read more

My mother and I stayed at this hotel for her Birthday and to have a quick mother daughter getaway from all the everyday obligations and responsibilities to just relax. The price for this hotel is reasonably cheaper in comparison to other hotels. However, it may not be as "luxurious" but still serves and provides its purpose. Pior to booking we weren't sure what the room included so we called just to double check and requested for an extra sofa bed. They quickly noted it down and obliged to our request, they also offered if I'd like an actual extra bed. (Take the extra bed). The sofa bed was alright to sleep on but became uncomfortable. (This was my mistake because what do you really expect from a sofa bed but to spare anyone else some trouble or back aches request for an extra bed instead). The hotel was very clean and the staff was hospitable, helpful and friendly. Although, if you are in need for actual plates and cutlery in the hotel room they do not provide these. (Me and my mom bought take out for dinner and brought it to the hotel to eat later so we didnt have to go back out). At most they will only provide glasses or wine glasses. Otherwise you might need to bring your own paper plates and cutlery if you don't want to be drinking out of paper cups and heating food up in a plastic takeout container. There is also a variety of places to eat out in the area. Breakfast at the hotel was substantial but if you want the extra hot sausage or bacon, eggs and home fries it will be an extra $5 which is also fair. If not, they have basic continental breakfast for free. The best part of the hotel room was the Jacuzzi bath. That was the star of the show. Provides in room private, peace and relaxation. (You're not suppose to light candles around the bath but I did. YOU CAN GET CHARGED FOR ANY SMELL OR DAMAGES IF CAUGHT. Buuut I didnt, just make sure theres no smoke and you dont leave the candles unattended) If you're looking for a quick cheap get away that provides the necessities I reccomend this hotel. I will be coming back for my birthday. read more

Came here for a workshop, so can not say anything about overnight stay here. The conference room was well lit and temperature fine. If we needed anything, there was always staff on hand to help out. I like this hotel. I've stayed here twice. It's clean and nice however I was very disappointed because my key cards did not work THREE TIMES over the course of 24 hours of my stay. And no, I did not put them near my phone and deactivate them. I had to go down to the front desk and wait in line to get this resolved over and over again. When I was going to be late to a meeting because of this, I asked for a later checkout time and was told I could pay a fee to get a later checkout time. This was beyond inconvenient. read more

You actually enter from the rear, as that is where all the parking is and have to come around the front, which is a bit awkward but front desk is easy to find. Has automatic doors and both front and rear allowing for easy entry with luggage. Landscaping is beautiful, both front and back with two large water fountain displays. Safe, mini-fridge, microwave, lots of drawer space, desk to work @ with plugs up top and not underneath. Two chairs for a sitting area with table so you do not have to watch TV in bed. Lots of cupboard space. Check in was a breeze, I just gave them my last name and they pulled up my reservation. They did ask if we wanted a room with a Jacuzzi, but for $40 more to me that is not really worth it. In hindsight it might have been since they do not have a hot tub, indoor or outdoor, just a pool. The hotel does have a coin operated washer and dryer located on the bottom floor next to the fitness room. This is also where a lot of the conference rooms are located. Fitness room is a decent size, although the universal weight machine was out of order. I did not see any free weights, but they do have a universal cable machine. There are a couple treadmills, elliptical machines, and bikes if I recall. My complaints are, no soap dish in the bathroom which makes cleaning harder and creates bacteria. Water pressure could be a little better from the shower heads and it is somewhat dark while showering, so they could use a light fixture there. Personal preference thing, but I did not like the carpeting, but it does go with the decor of the rest of the room. All of these are minor though, and did not detract from our stay. read more

Everything was completely sufficient...room was small but clean, pool was small but big enough for the kids to enjoy themselves. Breakfast was all we needed without paying extra for hot food, and the food was very nicely presented, which made it better than many other continental breakfasts we've come across. What bumped up the stars was the cost, which was super affordable and the service. Every employee we came in contact with was helpful, polite and pleasant! Especially the man working in the breakfast room each morning who was super friendly to my kids and worked very fast and efficiently keeping the breakfast room clean and inviting! read more

This hotel was nice on the inside but the service was terrible we we're being messed with during our stay telling us we could sit somewhere and coming back saying we couldn't and threaten to call the police and we got food from the restaurant and it was absolutely terrible and either over cooked or under cooked and the pool is small and also the bathrooms in the rooms are tiny and awkward and there was only one good employee and his name was Dave. I definitely do not recommend this hotel for anyone. But I have to say that the beds are the best hotel beds I've ever slept in so that's a plus. read more

Would have gone lower if I could, manager was unbelievably rude, one of my co-workers ended up with bed bugs and when it was brought at the front desk, the manager glared at us. Also were told that we all demagnetized our room keys by having them near our phones.... Rooms were sub par at best and smelled like smoke. Edit to response - regardless of how bed bugs are dealt with. And yes they are not the fault of the hotel but the person who brought them in. The response from your desk staff was very inappropriate. There is no reason to be rude to your customers. Rule one of customer service is to be professional. If you have a group of frustrated people the last thing you do as a representative of a company is to give attitude, blame the customer and glare at them. And I find it odd that all of the group that I was with had their card demagnetized on the same day when none of us had that issue in any other prior day as we have been in hotels for the last 2 weeks. You may state your rooms are smoke free but of a group of 31 people 20 of us stated our rooms smelled of smoke. read more

The rooms here are terrible and not as advertised at all. We arrived and went to our room and were disgusted by the overpowering musty moldy smell of the room. Both of us had trouble breathing in the room and were unable to stay at the facility. We were still charged a night despite the deplorable conditions of the room.
