Delicious Pupusas! We stopped by this past Saturday around 2 pm. Parking can be a little hard, but we found street parking about 1 block away. When we walked in there was only 1 other customer in the restaurant. We sat down and a nice young man brought us menus. They have a good variety of Salvadoran dishes to choose from including pupusas. One of the ladies working came over and took our order. I ordered 2 pupusas (rice flour) with beans and cheese. My husband ordered Bistek Salvadoreno. This comes with tortillas but he also ordered a pupusa. Our food came quick, about 10 minutes. The pupusas were delicious alonf with the curtido and salsa. The bistek was a little salty, but the beans were delicious. Also we ordered Tamarindo to drink and it was fresh not from a powder. so ive been here a few times before, but todays encounter was bs the food is mid at best but when the bill came and asked the chasier about the price discrepency he had major attitude and said the prices on the menu arent the correct prices. a simple acknowledgement or apology for not having updated pricing or alerting us prior to ordering is not good business practice. dude became rude and then asked us to leave. i will not be returning to this establishment. eff u sir! read more

Service was ATROCIOUS. I understand if your prices have changed on your menu but either update the menu or AT LEAST let your clients know once they are ordering that prices may differ and make them aware. Don't just automatically assume they can't pay and speak to them like they are trash and kicking them out when they just trying to make sense of the bill not adding up. Please work on your customer service skills as it seems by your previous ratings it's your biggest problem. Sadly you lost out on returning customers just because you see they can pay and think you can cheat them out on money thinking we wouldn't follow up with you. read more

I ordered 2 pupusas de arroz (con loroco) and one combination 2 pupusas with rice and beans for pick up. I was told ready time was 15min, and was in fact ready by the time I walked in(much appreciated). Pictured is my combo plate and a small piece of the pupusa de arroz which I really enjoyed. If your wondering what pupusas de arroz are like, I'd compare it to a mochi (chewy) like texture. Good customer service and good food, I definitely recommend this place. Customer service: Stopped by for lunch. Upon walking in, none of the 3 ladies working behind the counter acknowledged me. Okay, cool. I walked up behind a lady ordering to-go. Still no type of acknowledgement. I noticed the stack of menus, grabbed one, said "hello!", and seated myself. Still, no acknowledgement. I ended up ordering the camarones a la plancha to-go after having to walk up to the counter and make someone acknowledge me! Waited about 10-15 minutes for my meal. Food: My to-go container was full, fragrant, and came with some handmade tortillas. The grilled shrimp was very salty and dry. Salad was decent. Fries were perfect. Rice was bland. Been here twice now in the past week. The first time I had the eggs with loroco plate it was amazing and delicious. Today I had the pupusa combination plate which comes with 2 pupusa of your choosing and with rice and beans. Once again very good the pupusa are made to order so you know it's fresh. Higher end Salvadorian place I don't see it as. Service is slow and the place often still have flies. The neighborhood still has people just hanging around. Their pupusas are dry and need a lot of help. Traditionally pupusas are fried in lard, but they try to make them healthy and now just taste more like a naan with fillings. Their carne asada is just a fatty cheap cut of meat served like street food. Not a place I would plan on returning by choice. read more

Very disappointed in my recent visit here. I've been going to Montecristo with my family for over 10 years, since back when they were located by the Cow Palace, and we never had any issues with the food or service but today was absolutely awful. No one greeted us when we walked in, we sat ourselves, we had to ask for eating utensils and our orders were wrong. To make matters worse we had ordered food to-go before we got our dine-in order so we arrived home to find that that order was also wrong. We ordered zucchini and cheese pupusas and received cheese only. The sour cream was spoiled and the chicken tamale was pork. This is just unacceptable. It's sad that the owner has to be present in order for things to run smoothly. Since she moved over to their Mission location this restaurant has really gone down-hill. At this time, Montecristo and the pupuseria on Persia street (which we affectionately refer to as "La Persia") are my favorites...but they are my favorites for different reasons. Every time I'm asked to choose between the two, it's impossible, because they're two very different kinds of wonderful. One of my best friends is Salvadorian and mentioned that her father, who rarely ever praises anything, praised these pupusas. Fueled by this review, we went with trepidation. These pupusas are soft and fluffy. The best friend nearly cried because it tasted so close to her mom's pupusas, and that's pretty awesome. I loved the taste of the chicharron and I also liked the salsa. The loroco is also lovely, and just subtle enough that you get a good taste of it. I'd definitely go back, though it's quite tough to get here and also find parking. read more

As a full-fledged Salvadorian, I can be exceptionally discriminatory to bad pupusas. Thankfully, this isn't the case for Montecristo. I can sincerely say that Montecristo is hands down the be best Salvadorian restaurant in San Francisco. Unlike other spots that specialize only in pupusas, everything at Montecristo is great! They do take some time to make your food, but it is worth the wait. Here are the specifics: 1) Their pupusas are the perfect ratio of filling:tortilla:size. It doesn't have too much maza, or too much cheese, nor is it too big. They are spot on! 2)Their sopa, or caldo, is very fresh and they're vegetables are cut perfectly to size! On a foggy SF day, or even a hot one, this soup is perfect! 3) Authenticity. The ambiance at Montecristo is as authentic as their food.Plus, you do not have to deal with a cadre of hipsters Instagraming their meals. read more

We came here for Mother's Day and it was the worst choice we made. We waited for the food for more than an hour!! And we just ordered six pupusas. There was only one lady in the kitchen and the owner was seating down talking to some people at a table instead of helping out in the kitchen. (She was there for at least 30 min.) The restaurant was full when we got there, there was four tables already waiting for food and nothing was coming out. There was a guy seating at the table next to us and he got his curtido and salsa and thirty minutes later he got his pupusas!! And he had already ordered when we got there. And also the music was so LOUD that we couldn't even have a conversation without yelling! When we had already been there an hour these group of 8 people showed up, sat down and started getting their food. Wow!! Maybe that's why nobody else was getting their food, because the only lady working in the kitchen was making their food. Finally, my husband walked to the table where the owner was seating asked her how much longer for our food and she got up immediately and walked to the kitchen and started making pupusas and we finally got our food like twenty minutes after that and the other tables started getting their food too. We were there for two hours!! When the pupusas came we were starving and we ate so fast that we don't even remember how the pupusas taste like. So, if you decide to go here maybe you should place your order at least an hour before you get there. Good luck!! Oh, one last thing, we ordered one chicken tamal for my son and it was horrible! If I could give a 0 I would. Horrible, horrible customer service and the owner is rude as hell! I live in neighborhood and thought it be nice to support local restaurant. The first time we went in we were ignored and waited about 40 minutes for food. Second time I ordered for pick up (called in) and when my husband and I walked in to go pay and pick up our order the owner approached my husband, tapped him on the shoulder and told us to leave because "they were closed." (It was closing in 15 munutes). We tried to explain we had already ordered but the owner clearly drunk kept saying "go, go." The waitress then told him she was taking care of us and he walked back to his drinking buddies. I will not recommend this place. Plus when it initially opened the was frequent police activity there. The first time I went there, the food was great. The second time, it was okay. The third time... the chicken (that comes with the soup combo) must have been two days old, and was dry as all get out. I'll eat just about anything, and I did, but I was pretty disappointed, Especially as it was so good the first time. The sides have been consistently fresh, but it seems like the last time they were being cheap and reheating the main, perhaps not for the first time. Not cool. Bottom line, both the glowing reviews ("beyond amazingly delicious!", really???) and complaints could be true, depending on when you've gone there. BTW, this is home-style Salvadoran, not Mexican as some have described it, and tends to be significantly less spicy. You'll need to add the heat yourself if that's your thing. read more

First of all let me say the parking in the area isn't very accommodating. I live a couple of blocks up from this restaurant and there is no parking really in the area. Montecristo is always packed so you're going to be waiting for at least 30 minutes to receive your food. The pupusas are very good and flavorful and there soup is amazing. The environment is pretty loud but is to be expected with any Latin restaurants. The people who work here are very nice and helpful. Fresh homemade tortillas fresh homemade pupusas.
