I have used this service quite a few times but most recently I had a repair to a leather purse and a small repair to a fabric carry on bag. The work is excellent and the service is too. The gentleman always makes sure that you understand how the repair can be made and he is clear on when your item/s will be ready for pickup. So, I went here a few times for minor fixes with shoes..ya know the usual heel replacement, scuff cleaning etc. But I've also brought in leather belts that needed fixing mostly due to over wear. The owner/cobbler is a hard sell though in doing anything he doesn't feel comfortable doing. This is good & bad because on the one hand he's not going to waste your time & money. On the other hand he's unwilling to try that which may be standard to other repairmen. Boot stretching is one such thing. I was dead-set last summer to impress my new cowboy BF with a dyed-in-the-wool pair of authentic S*&^%$-Kickers. I scowered the internet, Ebay, Etsy, Amazon. In total, purchased 4pairs & ended up sending all but the last pair back to the sellers because of in-step issues. Took each time to Mr. Monterey who very argumentively, reluctantly in furrowed brow attempted the task. The last pair worked, but he was really sick & tired of me by that time. Frankly, I dont get the attitude, I paid him?! In short, the usual stuff he's great at, boot stretching? Leave that to your very own in-person-type purchase sans internet purchasing these difficult to size/fit pre-owned items! read more

I've taken my shoes and boots to these gents for about 15 years. They are not fast, and the price is worth the work. It's not cheap, but it's also not outrageous - it's fair. When you find a great pair of boots or shoes that make your feet feel happy, you don't want to throw them away after breaking a heel, losing the plastic/rubber tip or sole or scuffing them. This place will have you back on the dance floor in time. Generally 2 to 5 day turnaround, depending on volume, there is usually a front counter man, and then in the back, the repair man. The guy that owns/runs the shop is not the friendliest but the work they do is exceptional!! it is very hard to find someone who can do repairs to shoes anymore. He also cleaned up a handbag that someone ruined for me and it looks as good as new. At least I didn't lose out on a $250 bag I only had for a couple of months. When European Boot & Shoe Repair closed recently (sadly!!!), I tried this place out. I brought three items in: one was repaired fine, one (a new button) broke again within a week due to shoddy work, and the last was utterly ruined by this place. This last was a nearly new pair of boots that I'd brought in for a bit of stretching through the arch (normally a straightforward, simple thing). When I got the boot back, the toe box had been completely crushed, as though they'd put it in a clamp. I've had horses stand on my toes and not crush these boots, so I don't know what he possibly could have done to them, but nonetheless the toe box was fine when I brought the boot in, and flattened utterly (leaving no room for toes) when I picked the boot up. I brought them back in, and his customer service was defensive and argumentative. I did not start off angry, especially because he'd done a good job with the other pair and he immediately fixed the button, but his repeated insistence that this was an impossible thing to happen was not at all helpful - despite the impossibility, it happened nonetheless. After 10 minutes of this, he finally offered to attempt to fix the boot. His attempt was a failure, and he did not in any way offer to compensate me for having ruined a $150 pair of boots. He merely said he was sorry - I didn't even receive a refund for the work he had done. I would not trust this shop with anything - there should have been no way he could ruin these boots given what I'd asked for, and yet he did. And once he'd ruined them, he offered nothing in the way of customer service beyond defensiveness, shrugging, and saying he was sorry. read more

I found these boots that I have been looking for - forever, at a consignment shop; the perfect color, the perfect size and height of heel but the ankle was way too narrow. Desperate, I called the owner of Monterey, Rogelio and told him of my dilemma. I didn't want to buy them if he couldn't stretch them out enough. Rogelio went WAY beyond the 'above my expectations', he flat out blew me away! He drove, meeting me at the store to see the boots for himself. He wanted to make sure I wasn't going to waste my money!
