Monterey Financial Services has violated credit practices under §807 of the Fair Debt Collections Act - False or misleading representations and §809 - Validation of debt by attempting to impugn my credit report with false and fraudulent collection attempts. Experian removed this collections attempt from my credit report after dispute because Monterey couldn't produce any form of documentation that I actually owed the debt. read more

The worst scam company in history. NEVER DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY OR YOU WILL REGRET IT! They work together with Credova. I purchased a classic pistol from gun.com for a total cost of $1,300. They financed it for $3,000--more than triple the value of the weapon--over 24 months. I tried to pay it off within 3 months to avoid interest, but they told me I only had 30 days to pay in full without incurring huge fees. In the end, I paid it off--with an additional $15 charge just for paying by phone--and a total of $2,200, which is $900 more than the actual cost of the gun. But it didn't stop there. They claimed they had canceled the automatic payments and that the debt was fully paid off. Instead, they sneakily applied my payment to future months, and the scheduled payments continued as if I still owed money--as per the contract, they said. DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH THIS FRAUDULENT, TRASH COMPANY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. I seriously don't know how this business is still allowed to operate! read more

I tried to pay extra through their online consumer portal. It assesses a $10 fee. REALLY? For wanting to give them money? And then due to some clerical error they blamed me for, the full amount and fee were credited back to my bank. I know I didn't make a clerical error. When it comes to money, especially the amount I wanted to pay towards the debt, I triple and quadruple-check every digit and letter. I am not new to this and have learned from many painful experiences. If there was an error, it was on their part which they refused to acknowledge. Their online statement is very misleading. It shows them collecting the money and then crediting the money back. When I check my bank statements, it doesn't show that, THANK GOD! But how are we supposed to interpret that the fee was assessed and uncollected? And because the fee was assessed and not paid, it became delinquent and I was assessed a late payment of $40. A $40 LATE FEE FOR NOT PAYING $10 PROCESSING FEE that shows NOWHERE else on the billing statements being unpaid. Of course, a few months go by without any kind of notice By the time I realized what happened, the overdue fees reached $80. Calling and complaining is like beating your head against the proverbial wall and they don't seem to care ethically about their shady practices. Not only that, according to them it had to be paid through some other means that was NEVER disclosed anywhere. And if you pay it online, guess what? They'll charge you another $10 processing fee. They only get a star because I had to put on in here. I used this service because Credova had a nice no interest promotion. Sadly I have made five attempts to pay the balance on the loan during the zero interest period for my first payment. They have claimed I was rejected for NSF although there is four times the necessary amount to pay it off. When I said I didn't receive any communication from my bank at all, I was asked if I could submit proof. Hard to submit proof of not receiving communication. I asked if I needed to prove it by submitting my available balance and was told that they wouldn't remove the late fee I shouldn't have been charged to begin with. I am now waiting to see if my fifth attempt will go through or if I have to call again and try one more time. Don't bother working with them. Credova is getting a review as well for this. The sad reality is, Credova was a nice option for larger purchases, but they can't deliver on services if their partners are like this. read more

Absolutely shady company. I'm really upset with myself that I failed to do my due diligence with them beforehand. I contracted with a tax relief company called Guardian Tax, another shady disreputable company to dig myself out of some extreme financial hardship. Despite my already existing hardship, Guardian tax told me that they could only help me if I paid them $7000. Obviously I couldn't afford it--but no problem! Their buddies at Monterey Financial could lend me the money! I now pay $300 every month to Monterey Financial and I have a new debt on my credit report. That $300 is money down the toilet as I have received extremely poor service from their partners, Guardian Tax and no resolution to my debt. So far I have paid Monterey Financial over $2800. Since contracting with Guardian/Monterey, I have forced myself to do the unpleasant tax of learning about taxes--turns out I could have done the Offer in Compromise myself, and taken that $2800, cleared my tax debt. If everyone here who has written a bad Yelp review would report these guys to the BBB, FTC, Consumer Protection Bureaux and the California Attorney General's Office, they might stop preying on the financially vulnerable. Bought a dog for my wife for her birthday. Unfortunately she kicked me out a few days later so I got saddled with a bill from Monterey Financial Services. This past month I was unable to make my payment so I arranged for financial assistance, made a good faith payment on it for $20. They took my $20 and then when the due date came up they still took my normal payment amount on top of it. I called and got a friendly agent who claimed it would all be resolved and that not only would the money be refunded in 1-2 business days, but that he finished setting up the financial assistance to run until May. Well here we are on the third business day, no refund, I see a random $2 payment on my account and I appear to be accruing daily interest on my supposed late payment which is suppose to be null. I attempted to call their office today to get it resolved and apparently they're closed despite my call being during normal business hours. I will either get this resolved today or I will just stop paying. This is an absolute scam of a company that's going to destroy my credit over a single payment. Contract gets sent over it says $2800 and no interest. Lit lit lit. Sign on the dotted line. Copy gets sent over $6000 over time is some random total. Doesn't say term length or anything..says it's now a lease tho. Hmmm didn't know you could lease a animal. My life gets crazy busy.. a few months after do auto pay I see my credit decrease by like 100 points. Says I opened up a $7000 loan from this company. Automatically I'm scared and think my identity has been stolen. I search for the contract and find nothing. I do more digging in my email and find a random reminder for my payment in June. Only received that one email. I call them up. I ask immediately why is it saying $7000. That's your lease amount. Ok? W e.. what's the buyout price? I can't deal with these kind of discrepancies. $2800. How I paid 4 months? Well your paying $149 for a leasing fee and $89 for your loan( $227 monthly) I'm confused is that in the contract because I read it from top to bottom. No it's not. Excuse me? LETS TAKE A MIN TO RECAP. This standard leasing fee as she called it isn't in the contact. She admits it but says I should know because it's standard. Is it standard to have my loan with y'all and I didn't sign a contract with y'all? Is it standard to tell me I owe $2800 even when I paid $89 a month towards the loan? $227 a month and the buyout is still $2800. 6 month update My loan is now saying $7021. Yet they faithfully take the $228 a month out each month. And it reports to the credit bureau as in time and positive. In conclusion it seems like no one actually goes to them for a loan it's underhanded to them. Bait and switch. I purchased two handguns from Buds over the internet. Buds offered me financing and foolishly I accepted. The financing was through a second party, Credova Financial LLC. The contract was written with "Buds Gun Shop" on the contract. (I was told by an associate of Buds they never see the contract.) Credova then turns the contract over to Monterey Financial LLC for collection. I have no one to blame for overlooking the interest rate of 141 %! These people who Buds aligned themselves with are predators. This purchase was over the internet and it took awhile to get the firearms. They also did not charge me the required tax. I think Buds would be better served to sever their relationship with Credova Financial LLC. It is Buds name on the contract NOT CREDOVA. If you made the same foolish mistake, I recommend you request a copy of your contract and send it to your states Attorney General for review. I would also contact your states Banking Commission. Since the contract was over the internet, there may be some provisions with your state laws. GOOD LUCK read more

I belong to a vacation travel club who shall remain nameless but their initials are Global Exchange Vacation Club and they use this band of thieves as their loan company. These marauders if theft never sent me a monthly book for all my payments. They sent me monthly emails which I don't have a problem with. Then those monthly emails just stopped. I assumed I was finished paying. During this time my father was gravely ill so most of my bills went on the back burner. I was late but never I-didn't-get-my-period late that there was need to panic. Then I get a collection notice from these idiots. WTF?? You stopped sending monthly emails, no calls, nothing in the mail, not even a DM on Twitter. I'll give you my exact situation because I don't believe in hyperbole. I'm a disabled veteran and was paying to go to an online learning program that was supposed to give me the credentials I needed to get my foot in the door to work with animals. I knew that I was only starting for my own benefit and edification, that I am permanently disabled, so I was shopping around for a school that was online and $1000 or less so I could manage the payments. I'm not even sure at this point that the school (Career Step) is accredited properly. I'm still looking into that. At any rate, apparently this is the company that the school sold my loan to. I don't understand why and I don't understand why that is even legal. I thought I was paying the school directly, monthly. I received a payment booklet in the mail, much like one might see with a car insurance company. These people seem almost more like a bill collector. They cannot tell me who all businesses they manage or collect for. I paid (credit card auto draft) monthly for veterinary tech school. Apparently the school I used had me sign something which caused me to receive a letter later saying that I was now obligated to Monterey. Had I had a chance to read reviews here on yelp or Google I would've never went to that technical school because I'm a bachelor degree level college-educated woman, and any tech school that would use a company like this is not a legitimate school in my opinion. I'm curious as to why they have not been investigated by the Better Business Bureau, or some other entity. In fact, I just called them now to find out why they don't report monthly to the credit bureau like school loans are supposed to. My report shows that I've never had a school loan, which is a lie. This is my first and only one. But one call to their company number and I noticed that all I get is voicemail and no option to leave a message. That's not legitimate. Even if I press zero. So I wonder if they went out of business. If somebody has a legitimate number for them where a human being answers, please let me know. Thank you. As I read through their reviews, I see that most of the people are like me: They are someone who got a loan through one company, and these folks are like some sort of intermediary, with a physical address supposedly here in the States, but nowhere can go in and speak to a human being. That is not how business is done. Subpar subprime lenders are becoming this way. But my credit was good; no need for my college to sell my loan off to some sub-par company to ruin my credit and report things as late payments when it's not even a legitimate school loan. My credit report literally says that I've never had a school loan. So, that makes me also question the school that I attended. Will be having a serious talk with them also, because I did not finish the program and I was supposed to be able to go at my own pace because of my medical issues. Just be forewarned: You can get a loan through them but you may as well pay them off early with a credit card like I did because you will be dealing with a myriad of people, who are not bankers or bank representatives but just some lackey on the phone who doesn't understand why your loan just keeps going up and up and up when it's supposed to be an interest-free loan. I have no contract with them, yet they claim I have one with them through Aloha Hawaii. They have been taking $116 every month since November from my account via Aloha Hawaii. Now they are claiming I am past due on the amount I owe them when I can see they took the amount out and that they are attempting to collect a debt and it will go on my credit if I don't pay them. We have been paying on a debt monthly for at least 3 years without the principle being touched by even a penny. We were told that the online data was correct, however it did not reflect any change in current interest or principle when payments posted. So for 3 plus years they have pocketed our payments and we have not made a dent in the balanced owed.
