Food is so good, they just reopened we had to try it out. Very convenient menu you just scan with your phone and you can see pictures of ALL the menu items was very nice and unique. We usually get a gravy boat size of queso at other restaurants I will say this is quite smaller for $6 we had to order a second order, but it was delicious and doesn't have peppers like most places which we liked. I got the El Burro Estrello wo onions it had green, yellow and red peppers and I got steak as the meat. It was very good. The sauce on this is amazing I highly recommend, I would def order it again it was so much food I'm so full. My husband got the pick 2 combo and got cheese enchiladas with rice and beans, he liked it and would order again. It has been tough to find a quality Hispanic restaurant in Clemson but this place is definitely my new go-to. The place is actually pretty big upon entrance with gives of very spacious vibes. Many places fall short when it comes to decent chips but this place hit it on the spot. I opted for El Especial which had a bit of everything and really enjoyed it. I do wish I substituted some of the ground beef for chicken as there is a lot in the dish. However, it still tasted great and actually had very large sized portions. I'm going to preface this review by saying I love the food here and haven't had too bad of an experience in the past with any workers. Yeah COVID makes things harder for everyone working at a restaurant, but oh my goodness, everyone working out front today was incompetent (especially hostess). Had to wait in lobby for a party of 5 for 20-25 minutes and the only time we were spoken to was when we tried to get the hostess' attention. The response was "just hold on a minute". I have worked in the back and out front of a sit down restaurant for 3+ years, so I don't know everything but I'd like to think I know at least a little bit about how to treat a customer and this wasn't it. If there were no open tables, tell me. If a table was opening up soon, tell me. If I'm supposed to sit down myself, tell me. Your literal job is to be welcoming and treat customers as good as you're able to. This would be a little more understanding with a packed restaurant and no staff, but there was at least the hostess and 2 waiters with 6-10 tables and nobody said anything to us. There was also a party of 12 behind us and we were glanced at multiple times so the case wasn't that we weren't seen. I told myself I would never write any sort of negative review cause I didn't want to be an asshole, but besides food poisoning, the start to this night was the worst dining experience I've had. If you feel sick or it is cold outside..... love, love, love: Soap de Pollo; Great chicken fajitas, taco salad, Chili releno, chicken cheese Quesidia; Good bean, rice, salsa, warm chips, ; incredible tea and Margaritas. The food that I have tried here is good. The staff doesn't really know much about the menus. You ask, "what's on this or what comes with this" the waitresses really dont know and always have to go ask so got to the point I just say forget it. Bland, greasy as hell and barely seasoned, leftovers sat in my fridge for days before I threw it out.

I used to love this place because of the great food at great prices. But late last year they increased the prices by almost three dollars for a lot of items and called it, "competitive pricing." How is that competitive when Monterrey is now the most expensive Mexican restaurant in town? El Jimador, Fiesta Grill, Pancho's, and Vaqueros are all less expensive than this place now. I can get a Pick Two at this place for $11 (used to be $8) or I can go somewhere like Fiesta Grill and get better service, good food, and the same size portion for only $7.25. I love Monterrey but a good, well managed business doesn't increase prices by that much in a college town. Just not treating the clientele well. read more

I'd like to start off by saying the food tasted good. Good portion sizes and it was decent. However, the menu on Yelp and the menu at the restaurant are very different because the one on yelp has more options, vegetarian options, and lower prices. We heard there were $1 tacos but apparently that only applied to the "side" taco which wasn't vegetarian and was just beef and lettuce so I just ordered something else. I have one good thing to say to salvage the one star. Their decor inside was very nice and pleasant and made for a nice atmosphere.. But that didn't last long. This was the worst dining experience I've had in a long time. The wait staff was not only snappy and rude, but they were completely incompetent. The hostess gave us dirty looks the whole time, and the waiter we had couldn't understand what we were ordering and didn't seem to know the menu at all. He also used some expletives when he was frustrated with us for confusing him. When the food came out it was completely a joke. There was nothing but beef inside of my burrito or enchilada. I've been coming here for a few years. I love the newer location. It's much more upbeat, lively, and welcoming than some others I've been in. I like that the staff actually talk to me before getting straight to taking my order. I also like that other servers will ask how I'm doing when it's busy to be sure everything is good. This place puts unpeeled shrimp in their molcajete dish and the manager stands behind it. There's no fun like digging unpeeled shrimp out of a hot soup like dish so you can peel them and eat them... Monterreys is quickly becoming my favorite Mexican place in Clemson. They moved to this location within the past year. The plaza they were in before was demolished to make room for more apartments. I really like what they've done with the place, it actually used to be another Mexican restaurant. Anyways I've been to the new location 3 times now. When you sit down they serve you chips and salsa. They are very quick to refill as well. In general, service has been fantastic. Food has been served fast and hot. I always order the el especial. For $12 this meal is huge. Served on 2 full size plates you get a taco, burrito, enchilada, chile relleno, beans and rice. They have allowed me to swap out beef for chicken. I always leave very full and content, what more is there to ask. Sure I've had some better quality Mexican food but for the price this place is spot on. read more
