This was California Mexican food. I liked that there were different items on the menu than a traditional Tex Mex food. They also have Tex Mex, too. Everything is fresh. The chicken was tender and full of flavor. The steak was done to order and full of flavor. The beans were whole not refried,but that is the California Mexican dish. They bring out tortillas with bean sauce but I had the queso. The fried ice cream was delicious and the shell was crispy. The reason I gave 3 stars was the service was very slow . Really good Mexican food in a fun and festive atmosphere. We had dinner here recently when we stayed in the hotel behind the restaurant. We ordered a big sampler platter which was great and a steak torta sandwich. Between the Mexican place and the hotel, we've already decided that we will be staying on this exit again next year so we can have a nice Mexican meal again before turning in for the night. read more

Service and food quality have gone downhill, not the same restaurant. It is a sad day when we left Papas and Beer without any food or service. My husband and I used to love this place! It was our go to, sometimes 2-3 times a week. So this review is not due to "having a bad night" or a "one off". We have noticed a decline in food quality over the past few visits, the salsas have recently been watered down or sometimes even sour. The chips have been burnt and food has been taking longer than their usual. Also, depending on the server there may be an additional dollar added to each item. This was our place, so we always went with it, grabbed a different salsa, tried something different and just appreciated the hospitality, until the hospitality ended. Tonight we sat there for 15 minutes without anyone coming over to ask us about a drink or even to acknowledge our presence once we were seated. You could definitely tell the servers just stopped caring. That was the last straw and the end of our tolerance. It is apparent that within the last few weeks there has been a major change. Now, whether that is a new owner or server quarrels but the disruption of the back of the house has made its presence in the front of the house. It is with heavy heart that we say adios, as it is the end of one of the best restaurants. read more

I normally go to the Papas and Beer in Spartanburg and assumed this would be the same. I was very wrong. I ordered the tortilla soup. I expected a normal size bowl with chopped veggies, and that classic flavor. What I got was a bowl of soup made for a giant. The bowl was the width of a dinner plate with veggies so large I had to cut pick them up with a fork and cut them because they wouldn't fit in my mouth. The flavor was an awful smokey broth with no Mexican flavor. The melted cheese stuck the the spoon so I couldn't actually eat it. It was all wrong. We also tried the queso which tasted like thick milk. No flavor. Even my child didn't like it. The service was slow. I ordered the soup hoping I would be in and out. But the whole process was over an hour and I barely touched it cause it was so bad. The ambience is festive, with mariachi music in the background and pretty Mexican tiles. Perhaps other dishes taste better. If I returned, I would not go if I were on a time crunch, and would definitely order something that couldn't be screwed up. read more

Positive: they were open on a Sunday. Negatives: 1. They were either understaffed, or their service is just bad all the time. 2. They have a salsa bar which is cool, and the salsa is pretty good, but the cups they give you only hold about a tablespoon of salsa. How am I supposed to dip a chip in there? And the chips are mediocre at best. I got the California burrito with steak, again there were positives and negatives. Positive: ton of meat Negative: it wasn't good meat. And it smelled burnt. I also have a gluten allergy, and am always able to find great options (though they are not marked). I like the food although often a bit salty. Coming from Texas though I am not familiar with the salsa bar concept. I like the options. However, general speaking I like 2 options to cover me and my wife. Mild yet flavorful for her, let's get the sweat on yet sufficient cilantro for me. The options on the salsa bar don't really cover it for me. And if you can't make good salsa, I'm not sure you can really make an adequate main dish. Perhaps I'm being a little harsh. It has only been open a couple of months so it is brand new but the folks who work here are all from the other P&B in town so it is running smoothly by veterans in the business. The building was already a Mexican restaurant before P&B so the festive decor was in place and hasn't changed. We were greeted and seated and met with chips and bean dip at our table. They have a salsa bar with 9-12 different salsas available. I like the plain tomato salsa (good flavor, mild) and the cilantro salsa (delicious, slightly spicy). The chips were fresh and warm and the bean dip delicious. I had an avocado burrito (very good, loaded with avocado) and a Caesar salad (love their salad), and my wife had vege fajitas (large serving, delicious). We split an order of fries (excellent). The place was clean and had a fun, festive vibe to it. Our server (Leo) was excellent. For years we went to the other P&B in town and it is still a good place to go. But based on tonight's visit, I think we are going to be coming here a lot more. read more

Ordered takeout last night. I've got to be honest, I didn't give this place a fair shake because it sounded like a low-brow establishment...but how wrong I was. I've never tasted Mexican food quite like this; perhaps I've never had true "California style" Mexican before. I had the Yucatán Flautas and my wife had the veggie burrito Our food was unique and delicious, our dishes were beautifully prepared even in our takeout containers. AND! This restaurant has the best mexican food and also service. During this Covid 19 pandemic we chose to order through door dash. To really no fault of anyone's except the door dash app details, one of our orders was missing. We called Papa's and Beer on 81 and were able to explain the situation and they quickly made it right and one of their own employees raced over to our house with the rest of the order. First time at this location. I've been to the one in Asheville, Greenville and Spartanburg. My visit to this location was very good. The service was attentive and pleasant. The food was very good and came out very quickly. We tried several salsas from the salsa bar that we haven't seen at other locations that were all very good. Some times the food be good. Some times it don't. One lady that works there all the time have a attitude most the time. Very unprofessional. I just went there probably 30 minutes ago and the service was OK I had take out I had to wait on my food the food came out five minutes later and my food was cold I told them double rice I got one Rice and one guacamole when I was supposed to have two rice. they make that a deal then I told them I wanted extra green sauce they told me to get it off the Cold War and I told them that's not the same green sauce that I wanted. We went here tonight and it was horrible. The table wobbled really bad and when it was brought to the waiter's attention he just joked it goes back and forth like me. Our food came out fast but the pollo loco had burned chicken. When I was asked if the meal was good I pointed out the chicken was black and too tough to cut from being on the grill too long the waiter joked it's extra crispy. The bathroom was horrendous. This was a rather strange visit to Papa's and Beer. I normally go to the location on Haywood in Greenville but this weekend I met a friend for lunch here as it was closer to them. Located in an old KFC, they actually did a surprisingly adequate job of remodeling it into a quaint little Mexican joint. I arrived a few minutes before my friend and went ahead and got us a table. The host/server led me past a perfectly open and cleared window table to an awkward half-booth in a dimly lit corner. Not trying to be a bother but still having a preference, I asked if it would be okay to sit in the window seat. He looked at it and said it was dirty. While I didn't notice it to be too bad, a simple solution would have been to wipe it off (which should have already been done after the previous occupants left, but I digress). He offered to wipe it off for me, which I did appreciate, and proceeded to take my drink order while I waited. I started looking over the menu and several minutes later my friend arrived. Still no drink. A different guy came over and asked if we had our drink orders taken. I told him that mine had been, but my friend's had not. He walked off to get my drink but didn't take my friend's order. He came back and informed me that they had spilled my drink and had to make a new one. He also took my friend's drink order. So we waited, and finally our drinks arrived. We still needed a moment to decide on food and the young man asked if it would be okay if he ran next door to BP to get some milk. Since we had not decided yet we obliged... Sure enough, moments later he appeared in the parking lot, two gallons of milk in either hand. He stowed them in the kitchen and by time he returned we were ready to order. While we waited we had some of the chips and salsa and bean dip. Neither of us were pleased with the salsa which we both referred to as pizza sauce with water. Bean dip was excellent though. The food was good and the remainder of our service after the milk trip was good. I can't say it was an awful visit; I've certainly had worse. We both had a good laugh at some of the wacky instances and it provided a memorable experience. I will most likely stick to the one on Wade Hampton since it is closer to me but if we do end up going in Anderson I can't see why I wouldn't come back here. Thanks, P&B. read more
