I was introduced to Charlie the Butcher many, many years ago. My goodness, it was back in the 90's when I was in college and patroned their express location in the Ellicott Square Building downtown. Their roast beef sandwiches were the best. The roast beef is so tender, they give you a good portion on the roll and there's a nice flavor, leaves me salivating. It's been quite sometime since I had one, I finally had some time and stopped at this location. I regret to say I'm disappointed in myself because I was stopping for a roast beef and ended up making the mistake of being spontaneous and ordered the grilled BBQ prime rib sandwich. I'm sorry, I didn't like it. So, this sandwich costs $15.99 (comes with nothing extra), it was also on a roll, there was no BBQ sauce (I assumed there would be) but it was just dry, plain, devoid of much flavor, they topped it with provolone cheese, a couple pieces of peppers and some onions but it didn't hit the spot for me. The Costanzo roll was overbearing. I learned a valuable lesson today, "stick with what you love about the place!" So, I'll be back for that roast beef another day. The inside is reminiscent of the local 80's fast food joints of Buffalo, I would call it a little shack. I stopped in here right after leaving the BUF airport. It's very close to the airport, being less than 2 miles away and right across the street from airport property. Getting there just after 1PM on a Monday there was a line inside, to the door to place orders... the wait afterwards was about 10 minutes. I love bologna sandwiches and I also really enjoy a nice beef on Weck, so I was happy they offered a mini beef sandwich, still on kummelweck, which I got along with their bologna sandwich with provolone, onions, and peppers on it. The bologna sandwich was flame grilled and tasted excellent! I added jalapeños to it for a little kick, as well as some mayo and that made the sandwich really tasty! I started with their split pea soup - It was really good! It had big chunks of smokey, flavorful ham in it and the texture was thick and the flavor was great! I also tried a side of their mustard potato salad and it was decent, but I think it had pimentos or pickles in it, which I don't prefer. Last up - That mini beef sandwich - AWESOME! The bun really added the excellent flavor you'd expect from having the meat on that type of roll. The beef was tender and so flavorful! This was my first time trying beef on weck so I have nothing to compare it to, but I am a tough critic when it comes to sandwiches and I really enjoyed it. I loved their weck..it had the perfect amount of salt on top. The roast beef was packed on well and had nice flavor. I got a side of fries and I found them to be pretty basic which is why I gave 4 stars, just nothing special to the fries I wish they would do something to spice that up a bit. But other than that it was excellent! The vibe inside is also really unique. Pretty open concept and easy to order for take out as well. I didn't try their desserts but they looked delicious and they had a lot of different options! We went on a Saturday evening and I was worried it would be packed but it really wasn't. Once I went when the prime rib sandwich was an option as the special of the day. Hard to resist. Still, the traditional Beef on Weck is better. If you are a regular and somehow grow weary of the traditional, perhaps it's a good option for a bit of variety. However, if you are a visitor stick to the classics. On my recent trip, after realizing that just a sandwich is not quite enough for me to feel satisfied, I opted for a cup of Charlie's beef soup with orzo. I was not expecting such big tender chunks of beef in the mix, but there they were, complete with cut up vegetables. All of which made me feel like I was actually having a balanced meal. Usually I don't even have to look, I just know what to order. We ended up getting a BoW, a burger, hot dog, onion rings, and fries. And you know what? Charlie has been keeping a great burger under wraps in here! Not only do they have one of the best Beef on Wecks in WNY, their burger is also really, really good!! They take care of you as soon as you walk in the door and your food is ready in a few minutes. It's a nice cozy little place. It's what you would actually expect in a place called Charlie the butchers kitchen. It was comfortable, small, but nice. A nice selection of sides and a very good selection of sandwiches and stuff like Italian sausages, roast, beef, turkey, etc. Next time I'm out that way again over by the airport I'll probably stop in again and try the sausage. They also have frozen soups for sale. I don't know if it's always on sale or if this was just a deal for today or something but it's by four frozen soups get one free. The roast beef was overcooked and the top round was not seasoned. The beef was cut thicker than normal and my kimmelweck roll was stale, dry and bland. There was very little kosher salt and caraway seeds - no flavor. They were also very stingy on a side of au jus I had requested. What happened? The quality has noticeably deteriorated. We may have been the first and only customers, but about 30 minutes after we got there, a trickle of obvious regulars started filing in. The menu is extensive and a little confusing for first timers, but we opted for their famous beef on weck sandwich, a turkey sandwich, polish sausage, fries, and garlic pasta salad. We totally ordered too much food, but we were shocked that our total was just under $34! These are prices for the people, and the portions are very large. Our favorite items were the sausage and the pasta salad, which was loaded with yummy veggies and was so tasty. The famous sandwiches were carved to order, but definitely weren't the best we've ever had. The buns are amazing, and the fries were cooked fresh to order. I watched as Charlie himself tossed my pasta salad. The restaurant has free parking and indoor and outdoor seating. It's no frills, and there's a tub of horseradish on every table. You're asked to clean up after yourselves, and there are cleaning cloths on each table too. This is a strictly no-tipping establishment, which is refreshing. I feel like Charlie the Butcher is a Buffalo foodie's rite of passage, so I recommend a visit if you're in town. If you want to try local specialties, check this place out.
