The "new to us" hispanic restaurant we found, Salvamex, permanently closed between our Thanksgiving and Christmas visits to Chambersburg. We were shocked. We were saddened that we now had no go-to hispanic restaurant. The Montezuma's on Rt-30, see my unfavorable review on their location, failed us. While deciding where to eat I remembered that Montezuma has more than one location. This location was worlds away from the Rt-30 restaurant. We believe that this location is likely the mother location. The location is much bigger, the chairs didn't wobble and the staff was wonderful. We got our food fast, hot and with generous portions. Nothing like getting a basket full of hot tortilla chips! Menu was typical for a Mexican restaurant, with a few wrinkles here and there. Portions are huge. Staff was very attentive and helpful. Cheese quesadilla was like a yummy south-of-the-border grilled cheese... Cons: restaurant is small and cramped, looked like building used to be a Wendy's or something, and they crammed as many tables as possible into the floor plan. Parking was also limited. the food is good but everytime my girls and I try to get drinks they deny our very valid IDs just because we look young! We appreciate the caution but our IDs are valid and we're all of age we should be able to get a marg without the managers making assumptions that the IDs are fake everytime just because we look young. read more

For a local spot that is raved to be fantastic so I thought for sure this place would be a gem. It was... typical to other Mexican places. Service was fast but the food was not memorable. I ordered the Carne Asada expecting a flavorful steak.The jalapeno on the plate was a giveaway that i was in for a disappointing experience. My jalapeno was one of those pickled jalapenks you get from a jar. The steak i got was tough and chewy. We found this place on Yelp and thought Mexican sounded good for dinner. We came here about 5:30pm on a Friday, it was busy but we were seated right away. They have both indoor and outside seating. This building used to be a Rax roast beef restaurant that closed many years ago. Montezuma's is a small chain in the area with locations in Chambersburg, Waynesboro and Gettysburg. As my wife and I perused the menu, they brought us chips and salsa. The options are pretty comparable to most mexican restaurants. My wife chose the fajita burrito and I decided on the enchiladas verde. Our meals were delivered in a timely fashion and tasted fabulous!! Everything had great flavor and tasted really fresh. Very typical Tex-Mex restaurant. A place where people go for the "margaritas, guac, and chips and salsa". Yea yea yea... So not gonna lie the margaritas aren't bad. Plus on Mondays they are dirt cheap! I think it's like $1.99 for margaritas on Mondays...cheese and rice! The food is just okay. Very Greasy, very cheesy, very Tex-Mex-ey. I do LOVE how they have Mariachi's once a month. It's my favorite part of the restaurant. Personally, I prefer Veroni's Cafe in downtown Chambersburg. If you haven't been there, check it out! I also read that El Gallo Garcia on Main Street sells excellent authentic street tacos. So yea, if you have a big party and wanna go for the Tex-Mex route with margaritas and cheesy safe quesadillas - this is your place. Oh! And the once a month Mariachi night! For sure attend that. Classic Mexican restaurant and thank goodness the "Live Mariachi Band" that was promised on the sign out front was not playing because I'm not a fan. Service was good and attentive even if the waiter kept referring to everyone as "my amigo." Chips were warm and the salsa was good though a little more soupy than is my preference. This makes it drippy, unfortunately. I chose the Carne Asada tacos and they arrived swiftly and well loaded with grilled beef. It was very tasty but looking at the menu, it was supposed to be "Three tacos with grilled steak served with tomatillo sauce, pico de gallo, rice and beans." The tacos were present as were the rice and beans (which were good) but the pico was missing as was the tomatillo sauce. I've been here 3 times so it's time for a review. I have a client in the area, this place is walking distance from his office. He is here every week for lunch. For you covid concerned folks. They have social distant tables, the staff had masks on, they had reminder signs all over to wear a mask when you get up, and protocol when you walk inside. You have to wait before walking in. They bring you right to a table. They have a avast lunch special menu. Both of us ate for $20 at a sit down restaurant. What's not to love about that? The food is amazing. We both had the fajita salad. It came in a tortilla shell with all the fixins. Delicious. Montezumas is our go to place when we are feeling like some Mexican food. Whether it is takeout or actually going there to eat, the food is always outstanding, service is top notch and workers are very pleasant. The queso is out of this world. My fav dish is the fajita burrito with a mix of beef and chicken. Yes, you can get that. The flavor profile is robust and blends so well with the tortilla and queso over top. Peppers and onions are cooked perfectly. Not soggy, not raw but a perfect bite to it. Steak and chicken are seasoned perfectly to bring out flavors not to mask. I recommend asking for extra queso and blend with rice too for over the top cheesy goodness. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I have had about everything over the years and love it all! We're in town for the night and tried this based on Yelp reviews. It struck me as strange when we walked in and saw a sign that said BYOB...because they are not serving alcohol. I've never been to a Mexican restaurant that didn't serve alcohol, so that was an odd start to the meal. The food was average Mexican food. There was really nothing to distinguish them from any other Mexican restaurant. It wasn't bad food, but it wasn't particularly good either. The service was pretty bad. The waitress barely talked to us and didn't check on us hardly at all. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place. I'm sure that there are better restaurants in town. read more

Took a long motorcycle ride to West Virginia and stopped here on our way back. We had actually decided to go to the Italian place across the street, but after we parked we realized we could smell this place from across the street...and it smelled absolutely amazing. Not a giant beer selection, but they had Lager on tap so hubby was happy. We both wanted fajitas, and they offer fajita dinners for two. We chose chicken, beef, shrimp, and chorizo. They brought out a plate of proteins that was so big, it easily would've fed four people. And it was so delicious. It was full of spices and flavor. It wasn't mostly veggies, either. It was a lot of protein. I eagerly boxed up the leftovers and had lunch for two days. It was just as amazing for lunch. There are actually two locations for Montezuma's, and which location you choose has a pretty big impact on your experience. The Wayne Ave. location has better food, but it is always very busy so the service is slower. The Lincoln Way location has much faster service (because it's not as big or busy), but the quality of food is not as good. Both locations have charming wait staff and lots of smiles, but I'm partial to the manager at the Lincoln Way location. He's just a step above: suave, interesting, charming, and great with his staff. I came here for dinner on three different work trips to the area - after the first visit, it became a mandatory trip for my next two return visits to Chambersburg. The Carnitas here were the best I ever had in my life (the first visit). I opted for the tacos - the potion is huge, the pork was so flavorful, tender and crispy, and the accompanying pico and tomatillo salsa were so delicious and actually spicy. I wish I could find a recipe for their tomatillo salsa, it was different than any I've had before. I will say I did find the food somewhat inconsistent. The first time the rice and beans were kind of blah tasting and then the next two times they were awesome. The Carnitas, while still good, were not as good the second time, and then great again the third. The happy hour margarita (3.95 - classic on the rocks) was pretty disappointing the first time, it was weak on the tequila and overly tasted like sour mix. Then it was better on a return trip. I'm suspect the mix is pre-made, not made to order, so maybe it depends on who makes it that day. If I came again for work or passed through the area, I would definitely make it a point to come back for those Carnitas and salsa. read more

Once again my friends, you didn't disappoint. Hot fresh chips and a salsa with a nice kick. No gringo pico de Gallo from a jar here. I ordered a margarita on the rocks, and the carnitas lunch plate with corn tortillas. The salsa that came with that (I ignored the gringo salsa) had a depth and body one can only dream of in the northeast. We came on a Friday at lunch time and the seating area was full - smart people!
