Seneca Lake stretches long and narrow through central New York, its deep blue water framed by…read morerolling hills, vineyards, and small lakeside towns. I found the setting open and expansive, with clear sightlines across the water that changed character depending on the weather and season. The shoreline offered a mix of natural overlooks, parks, marinas, and small developed areas, giving me multiple ways to experience the lake rather than a single central viewpoint. The main highlight for me was the lake itself and the variety of ways to interact with it. The water felt calm and clean in many areas, and the region is especially known for boating, cruising, and lakeside relaxation. Along the surrounding shores, vineyards and wineries are a major part of the identity, and I stopped at a few for tastings with scenic views over the water. The small towns around the lake added to the experience, giving me access to picnic areas, walking paths, and casual waterfront spots where I could take in the lake at a slower pace. The experience around Seneca Lake was generally relaxed and spread out, with no single concentrated entry point or structured route. I took a boat tour from one of the marinas, which gave me a more immersive perspective on the water, and I also pulled over at roadside overlooks and shoreline parks for simpler, quieter moments. Crowds varied by season, with summer being more active and the time I visited feeling much quieter.

Set sail for True Love, a truly enjoyable time!…read more Bottom Line Up Front: We had a wonderful, relaxing, and fun time for a good price. The Good: The history of the John Alden designed schooner is worth reading before you go. We had some more "salty" members of our group that recognized the name of the schooner from the 1956 movie "High Society" starring Bing Crosby, Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra and after that we were on board for a wonderful time. We even were seated in the seats once occupied by Gene and Bing. We purchased our tickets after being approached by Terry who negotiated a decent price with us because he wanted a full boat for the next trip. Captain Bill was an experienced Captain and is well known in the area. He got us underway and was a delightful host regaling us with stories about the "True Love", Seneca Lake and surroundings, as well as, some stories about racing the "True Love" and his crew, Spencer and Marena. Captain Bill even assisted another sailing boat that was in distress and precariously close to the lake edge. The trip was two hours long and on time. The crew served non-alcoholic and adult beverages (some free, some for a price) while underway and also sold some souvenirs (Whisky and glasses). The Bad: There was nothing bad, from start to finish, this was a very enjoyable trip and the crew definitely enjoyed sharing their love of the "Trie Love" with the joyful passengers. The Ugly: Absolutely nothing other than we could not be out for longer. If you find yourself in Watkins Glen, this is definitely an enjoyable to kick back, relax, and let the wind fill your sails. A nice walk with a lot of scenic views and waterfalls…read more We did the Gorge Trail, went up to the Suspension Bridge, saw Rainbow Falls, made it up all the stairs at Jacob's Ladder, took the North Rim Trail back to the Suspension Bridge, and then came back out through the Gorge Trail. The hike wasn't difficult, and it was a nice way to spend 2.5 hours. The key is to come early, though. We started at around 7 am, but by the time we were back at the Spiral Tunnel, it was pretty packed with people taking in the views and taking pictures.

It was pretty crowded when we arrived but there was parking in the main lot across the street from the park entrance. We also found street parking for free just a few streets over. The trail is stunning but can be tough when there are large crowds. There were a lot of mobility-challenged/older people out on the trail - which is wonderful - but if you are more fit and looking not to get stuck on the stairs - perhaps you should get up earlier. The Gorge is as stunning as it seems in pictures and looks like you can't even believe it is real. We did the entire Gorge from the beginning to Jacob's Ladder, went up, used the restroom and took the North Rim Trail back to Lover's Lane, then over to South Rim and down Couch's Staircase. This made all of our walking a bit different and the crowds were less bad once we hit the Mile bridge area. I think a lot of people bail on Jacob's Ladder. Honestly, I do wish that we had gone ahead and gotten up early to do it when there were less crowds - it would've made the experience more enjoyable.

We stopped by Clute Park to take in the views of Seneca Lake, and it does have some nice views. There are also basketball courts, bathrooms, a food vendor stand (although they didn't look open when we were there), a beach area, a playground, and more. I'm sure it's a great spot for families staying in town (and especially those staying in the campground across the street from the park), but you can only pay for the day (not for the hour), so we spent about $8 to just by for a bit to enjoy the views. It's probably possible to find street or free parking nearby and then walk over, but - since it was a holiday weekend - parking was harder to find than usual. The views from the park were okay, but I'd say this park is really a place for families to use the amenities in the park, not for casual tourists in town.

Good gravel roads, spacious site, and full hookups made it easy. Very close to down town, kids park across the street, and right at the bottom of the lake; so close to everything.
