My friends and I wanted to check out Montoya's -- especially because we enjoyed Metro Taco; the restaurant that previously occupied the space. When we visited Friday we immediately headed to the backyard patio. It's spacious and nicely adorned with Tiki lamps and other tropical fixtures. The food was flavorful, but I would say the drinks were my favorite. Their Montoya's Margarita was tasty. However, the place could benefit from having a happy hour to lure people in. Cocktails are priced at $16. In terms of the food, we shared the Guacamole, Tostada Nacho Tower (it ended up being different from what we expected based on our server's recommendation), and the Crispy Potato Taquitos. We also ordered the Pulled Pork and Skirt Steak Tacos. Of the two, the Pulled Pork was my favorite. For my friend, it was the reverse. Another companion ordered the Tuna Tostada and loved it. We shared the flan for dessert on the recommendation of our server, but she neglected to mention that it came with a hint of orange zest to it. We wouldn't have ordered it had we known. The flan wasn't creamy -- it was gelatinous and light (nothing special). The restaurant is new to the neighborhood, and as a result, they are trying to figure things out. The place was not crowded, but as people streamed in, the service declined. When we were ready to leave, we had to request the check. It arrived with errors including items we had not ordered. It took a bit of time for them to correct the bill and return it to us, too On a positive note, the restaurant has a decent lunch menu that should attract locals. Verdict: good, but in need of improvements.

Tried this place out tonight, and it was just OK. The outdoor space was set up very nicely in terms of decor, but there were tons of bugs. Ants were swarming the ground and crawling over my feet during dinner from dropped food that hadn't been cleaned prior to us being seated. Also, lots of nymph lantern flies on the ground and one landed on our table. The plants really give the space a nice aesthetic, and I know it's an outdoor space, but there has to be ways to control the insects. Food was just OK, I wasn't mad at the tacos, but they weren't the best tacos I've had. Also, for the price, they're VERY small. $6/$7 per taco and it was a small Guerrero corn tortilla. Chicken had good flavor, but there was no sauce. Fish taco was catfish and better than the chicken. Complementary chips and salsa was nice. Service was fine, server was nice, but seemed to be the only one working so things moved a little slow.

This is a soft opening review. Drinks were good but a little overpriced as they are using well liquor for the drink specials. Service at the bar was excellent, but everything changed when we went to our table. It took over 30 minutes to get appetizers. Those hit our table around 7:45 PM. Our waitress was often absent. We had to ask for napkins, silverware, more chips and salsa. There six of us at the table and they gave us one basket of chips and one salsa to try to pass around I guess? If our waitress had been on hand to offer refills, take more drink orders for cocktails, it might've been better. But by 9 PM we still didn't have our entrées. The staff tried to convince us to stay even longer saying that we would have our dinners by 915, but by then we were all just done. The restaurant did comp the appetizers, but where they failed this night was not in the bumpy service, it was in communicating with us. When service is going poorly and the kitchen is overwhelmed, that's the time to step up the table service and provide whatever you can in the meantime. Unfortunately, none of that happened. The queso fundido with pork and the guacamole were tasty. I hope they get things sorted out soon.

This place has such a cute little outdoor space, I wish the food was better so that I'd come back. I got a mushroom taco and an Al pastor taco. First the waitress brought me a cauliflower taco which I didn't order so I had to wait for my food to be made properly. The Al pastor taco was flavorless and fatty. I've never actually had a fatty pork taco but there's a first for everything. My favorite taco is usually a mushroom taco but this was the worst one I've ever had. There was no seasoning, no sauce nothing. It was just plain mushroom with a little tomato and onion. Sadly not for me.

Montoya's is a newcomer to the Forest Hills food scene but brings some credibility with a chef from the ever popular, well loved 5 Burro. Located off the main strip, on Metropolitan Ave, Montoya's offers delicious Mexican fare and great cocktails. The owner is very friendly and will proudly offered a variety of seats that the space has to offer: there is seating at the bar as well as tables and a really nice outdoor dining space. Food wise, the tostada nacho tower is an excellent variation of standard nachos. The queso is a great flavor and texture and adheres to the crispy tostada better than melted cheese Tacos were solid with flavorful meat that was cooked fresh to order and definitely not reheated. The al pastor wasn't too powerful in flavor and the meat was tender. The standout was the skirt steak which had a great taste. Drinks were made really well, passion fruit margarita packed just enough punch. Would definitely try the frozen ones next time. Our server was also so friendly and attentive. I read some questionable reviews elsewhere but can assure that wasn't the case at all for our tables or the ones around us. Very excited to have this new spot and look forward to returning to try more menu items!

Tried Montoya's, a new Mexican restaurant. The food took a little while to come out, but the portions were decent and definitely filling. Overall, it was a good experience, and I'd be willing to give it another try.

This spot is sooo good and I wish I didn't live so far because I would be here every week. I came with a couple of friends after work and we made it just in time to get a few drinks for their happy hour that goes until 6 o'clock. The margaritas were so tasty and were strong. Complementary chips and salsa were great. We ordered the spicy chicken quesadilla and steak fajitas. My friend also ordered a burrito. The spicy chicken quesadilla was honestly one of the best quesadillas I've ever had. The chicken was so flavorful and the tortilla was perfectly crisp. The steak fajitas were incredible and my friend's burrito looked great as well. The churros were yummy, but a bit overpriced in my opinion. The service was amazing. Our waitress was bomb. The backyard is so cute and so thoughtfully decorated. I will definitely be returning when I'm in the area or even if I want to go out of my way to come back.

I must admit I wasn't expecting to eat the best tacos in my life on Metropolitan Ave in Forest Hills Queens NY. I came in for Happy Hour and had one of the best Margaritas on the rocks I ever had so I decided to get the tacos chicken, pork and chorizo. They were so amazing I was too busy eating them to even take a photo. Even after happy hour deals were over we shared more tacos, guacamole and an amazing flan and tres leches cake. What was also pretty cool is their beautiful extra large outdoor space in the back. The staff was amazing and service from the waitress excellent. This is definitely going to become a weekly happening as good Mexican food in an cool atmosphere is a rarity these days. No lines, no pressure just excellent drinks food and service. 10 out of 10. PS I will definitely update this with photos the next time I come.

    Cute summery vibes!

This place is a gem! There's a surprisingly large outdoor space tucked away in the back with festive tiki & palm tree vibes. I'm in love with the frozen sangria - the perfect, fresh, icy deliciousiousness for summer. The food is excellent - I've had the pulled pork burrito and the chicken quesadilla - and the staff have all been so sweet every time I've stopped in. Loving this new addition to the Forest Hills food scene.

Montoya's was such a pleasant surprise. They have only been opened for less than a week and they are operating like a well oiled machine. The servers were attentive and saw to our every need. It felt like we were long time customers. The vibe was family friendly without being a TGIF! We are already planning to have my daughter's 30th birthday there in September! The food was well seasoned, flavorful and elevated. My favorite were the black beans with rice that came with my enchiladas. You can tell a lot about a chef from the way he flavors his beans! The frozen margaritas pack a punch - they tasted like a grown up drink instead of your typical slushies. All in all I have no notes!! If this is an indication of things to come we are here for it! Welcome to the neighborhood Montoya's!
