We came here for lunch after our Cupid's Chase 5k for Valentine's Day. The restaurant was decorated for Valentine's Day with balloons and flowers. We were the first customers in the restaurant. Shortly after, the restaurant started to fill up. For drinks, we ordered a mojito and Sangriarita. They had regular for $14 and jumbo for $28. We got the regular size and then went to mango margaritas for our next round. We ordered chips and guacamole for the table. I got steak fajitas with a side of tostones which was really delicious. I was so full I couldn't even finish my food. I'm so excited for my leftovers. We also ordered shrimp and fish tacos. Everyone loved their food. We looked at a dessert menu but didn't order anything. The WORSE PLACE TO GO TOO!!! Don't waste your time and money going there. Make sure you look at your receipt before paying and that they're not charging you for someone else's stuff or adding additional items. When I told our waitress that she's charging us for stuff we didn't have and asked for the manager, this fake plastic Barbie manager came and TRIED TO THREATEN US by saying she's going to look at the cameras and we told her "go ahead, check your cameras and you can bring the cops as well to review it with you!" She was so unprofessional; I guess since the doctors that she went to to get her facelift and her body done didn't do her job correctly which made her look like she had a stroke, she took her anger on us over something she couldn't prove at all, she acted like a belligerent child. When we asked to see this "security footage" she claimed she couldn't show us, so we told her to call the cops so that they can see it with us and she still didn't want to show us or call the cops as well. Such an unprofessional act. Everyone go to IYKYK, Mojo or Lowkey for REAL PROFESSIONAL service; El Coyote Forest Hills should go back to school on professionalism and business etiquette. 1st time customer came here Friday evening for dinner. I ordered The enchiladas with chicken and mole sauce. Unfortunately, most of the chicken was dry. A friend and I came here for happy hour and totally enjoyed ourselves. El Coyote is a happening restaurant in the heart of Forest Hills, Queens, NYC. In order to explore and appreciate the happy hour menu you would need to sit at the bar. Honestly the bar is quite spacious and has a nice vibe. I'd very much so enjoyed their homely red sangria. I personally thought it was super delicious and quite tasty. If you have two of them I think you'll have a nice buzz. Haha! I'm also a fan of their Modelo beer. Having a cold one will hit the spot. No joke. Now for appetizer, I had an order of flautas, which happens to be fried corn tortillas stuffed with chicken. For food we ordered the empanaditas, the flautas, the chimichanga, nachos and mushroom quesadilla. For drinks we got a few rounds of flavored margaritas. We were deciding between a few Mexican restaurants in Queens and chose to try El Coyote. This place is ok. It's not great. Service - courteous and patient. However, he did not mention that top up liquor on the margharitas is $5 extra. Food - nachos with beef and chorizo were amazing and worth every penny of the $13.95 Main course - wife ordered combo fajitas ($23.95). It was good but nothing to write home about. Combo included steak, chicken, and shrimp (but there were only 3 shrimp.. we expected more for $23.95). Ina edition, the tortillas are not authentic and Bowman de . They tasted store bought. My taco, enchilada, burrito combo was subpar. The mole sauce on the burrito was not good. Drinks - Coyote charges $20 for a margarita. The problem I had was that our waiter blatantly told us there was a special on the large margharitas where they were $20 for 20oz. I understand that drinks are expensive in NYC but if I PAY $20 for a drink, I EXPECT $20 worth of drink. My first margarita was too sweet with too much ice, and too little liquor (lol). I am about value and getting what I pay for. I have had $150 drink in London and 50 cent whisky drinks in Sri Lanka. Value is everything. Our bill was $145 plus gratuity. That is really high for this part of the city, Austin Street or not. Anyway, there is better value-for-money Mexican food within a 2 mile radius of this place. We probably will not frequent this place again as I cannot justify a $165 bill for 3 margheritas, 2 entrees , and 1 appetizer. I won't be going again but I do advise you do you homework. read more

I've been wanting to visit since before the pandemic. Was looking for a bite on Austin and decided to try El Coyote. First, the service is excellent, friendly and efficient. The prices are standard for the area. And the beef empanadas were home made, fresh and delicious as was the sauce that accompanied them. I was pleasantly surprised. Here's the thing about the pandemic, it's given restaurants that were once half-ass with their food and service a chance to reinvent themselves and gain new footing, while leaving some of those that think they can phone it in because they were once the place to be to lose credibility. In the case of El Coyote, they fall into the former category, and have really come out of their shell and proven their worth in the best possible way in the aftermath of the Covid chaos. Before the crisis, my unfinished review was a mediocre three star review full of annoyances from unattentive service to an overall lackluster meal. Now, the place seems full of life. Service is spot on with the servers clearly being on top of their game with eagerness, friendliness and courtesy, followed by really delicious and inspired food. COVID wise they get a A+ for their attention to safety from sanitizing tables to having their servers and back waiters wearing masks AND gloves, using fresh utensils and COVID safe dining plates. The set up outside is pretty creative and inventive, using the entire outside seating area going around the top floor walkway. Not sure how that may be affected when stores begin to reopen. But in the meantime, this is definitely the place to go for good Mexican food from fajitas and table side guacamole to other classics that places like Mojo don't offer. And added props to them for offering a virgin frozen option for those of us who don't drink. This is probably more of a 4 1/2 star review because of a bit of a wait time on our food which may have to do with a bustling night though not nearly as many as they normally served. But I went with five as it really is much more of a five then anything else. read more

I had told hubby of a story of a nice hole-in-wall Mexican restaurant I went to when I was in the 5th grade as part of a field trip --yes, my entire class of 30-something kids all went to a Mexican restaurant to try some tacos. We found this cute Mexican restaurant which seem to be similar to the one I went as it kind of fit a criteria where I said us kids had to climb up a set of metal stairs to a second floor terrace to eat. There is both outdoor + indoor dining available. It was empty and we were the only guests until mid-way through our meal when another couple arrived. The menu was a bit pricey for brunch (maybe it's normal for this area as it was bustling with activity) on this cold Sunday 11/15. It is our second time indoor-dining & we were curious about their COVID safety precaution. Our temperatures & contact info was taken. We were seated in between tables that had large plastic screen barriers. We ordered tacos and fajitas. My friend took me here to celebrate my birthday. I love a good restaurant that serves delicious authentic food. One of my greatest passions is dining out and cooking. There's no greater feeling then enjoying palate salivating food. El Coyote has since replaced the former Sgt. Garcia's Mexican restaurant. It was a bit nostalgic reminiscing when I used to dine here with my mom during many of our Thursday date nights. El Coyote has five restaurants sprinkled throughout Queens and Connecticut. They were opened up by brothers -- Rolando and Carlos Axilote, natives of Puebla, Mexico. Let's get into the ambience and my experience shall we? The Forest Hills location is colorful with Aztec pictures that adorn the walls. The bright yellow scenery is enticing which features ceramics and paintings of Mexico. First thing I noticed once I walked in is that the restaurant is very festive and offers a relaxed atmosphere. Although the restaurant was not packed for an early Sunday afternoon I felt the good vibes throughout the place. My friend was waiting for me and ordered sangria on the rocks. I decided to join her in the drinking festivities. I asked the bartender what he recommended, he said a frozen sangria. I tried it and was not impressed. He disappeared for quite some time so I asked another bartender if I could change my drink. He gave us the run around and ultimately walked off and spoke to the manager. Who then spoke to the first bartender once he returned after what felt like forever. She reprimanded him in Spanish and told him not to recommend anymore drinks. My issue is that no one acknowledged that I wanted to change my drink, an employee was reprimanded in front of me, and the manager didn't think to apologize and ask what I wanted. She was not personable nor friendly. Our bartender actually apologized and changed my drink to a mango margarita on the rocks with a sugar rim. In the interim of our bartender disappearing a second bartender clocked in for his shift. As he was prepping his area my friend complimented his mustache because it looked like a mustache from an old cartoon where it was long and curled upwards at the end. This is where things started to go downhill. She requested water, utensils, and another drink all of which he pretended to not hear. She asked a few times for water and he didn't oblige. I'm not sure what his deal was but he paid more attention to prepping, laughing with other customers instead of giving his undivided attention to everyone. We received complimentary chips and salsa. We placed our order and asked for everything to be brought out at the same time -- they weren't. We ordered the Empanaditas which are small fried turnovers filled with beef, Sopa De Tortilla which has Mexican dry chilli peppers, broth, chicken, avocado, cilantro, and cheese, as well as a Shrimp Sofrito Chimichangas entree. My entree came with two chimichangas. The menu doesn't state how many come in an entree and it doesn't mention if rice and beans are included with the meal. When I asked the bartender he told me yes and no. I'm not quite sure. Ask prior to ordering. My friend and I both were in agreement that the food was delicious. I just wish the menu was clear on what's included with meals. Also the cook needs to be careful when serving seafood because I found a shrimp in my chimichanga that still had the tail intact. This makes me question what else wasn't properly discarded. I would definitely come back so that El Coyote can redeem itself, their food practices, and overall professionalism. read more

I never thought to come here in the past because it never looked busy. But I saw that they were offering drink specials and I needed a drink, as well as some tacos. After ordering my shrimp tacos which came out to about $20 for three, I realized that I should have taken advantage of the 10 taco sale for $30 that comes with a free margarita. I may try that next. The shrimp tacos were delicious and the rice and beans were also delicious. I don't have any complaints about this place only that there were bees in my drink and around the table. I didn't get a chance to take a photo of the drink because I had to finish it before the bee tried to finish it before me. I am sure to return in the future. Went here with my family the other day and was sorely disappointed! This use to be a great mexican spot and I dont know what happened. To start the waiter was courteous and took our orders at the end he asked if we wanted guacamole everyone at the table politely declined. They came back over different staff 3 other times telling us our guacamole was coming and then asking why we were declining something we ordered when we Never ordered the guacamole. It eventually finally got sorted out with the manager and we moved on to our meals. We ordered 2 paellas, 2 chicken enchiladas in green sauce and 1 chicken fajitas. The 2 paellas were underseasoned and scallops that were stated to be in the paella was replaced with imitation crab. It was overall ok but definitely nothing special. The chicken enchiladas were deemed to be ok but nothing spectacular. My father said he wished he ordered the fajitas like me instead since they cannot screw up fajitas. Well he changed his mind when he tasted my overcooked dried chicken. I really was sorely disappointed overall. The manager was very nice and made the service more pleasant. They offer two kinds of sauce, a marinara tomato based sauce and a sweet Thai like sauce which were both delicious but I preferred the sweet Thai inspired one.
