This place is great if you're a vegetarian or a meat eater. Either way, there are plenty of options for you to choose from. We started off with some guacamole and chips. I dont recommend it as the guacamole was missing something. It was quite bland. I couldn't quite put my finger on it maybe no jalapeños or no onions. I definitely wouldn't be ordering that again. I must say that my entree which was the enchiladas was great. I've never had that before and only seen pictures so wanted to try it. Glas that I did. I tried a bit of the taquitos and that was just okay. Last but not least had some dessert which were churros and ice cream. Who doesn't like both? I've been at Mas Tortilla twice. Randomly, both were on a Tuesday, which luckily for me, happened to be Taco Tuesday. The selection was plentiful, which was awesome but challenging... I just wanted to order one of each but I know I couldn't have eaten 15 tacos even if I wanted to. Despite of only trying 4 different flavors, I can say that all the food is great. I was there for a couple of hours and, during that time, I saw 37 deliveries go out... The ambience was mellow as you can expect it on a Tuesday evening; however, after a couple of margaritas, I was asked what kind of music I wanted to hear. Even though there weren't that many people there at that time of day, he was still pretty busy. However, I didn't really like the chalupas. The one with chorizo was pretty good, but the beef and the shrimp were definitely subpar. The beef was tough and not very flavorful, and the shrimp tasted fishy. The whole dish lacked flavor. This place is the bomb dot com! I'm so glad to find an authentic, reasonably priced taqueria in the area like Mas Tortilla. It is a short walk from the Forest Hills train station (~10 minutes away) just to give some perspective, but it does help work up an appetite. I came here with a friend for a Friday lunch and it was about 40% full inside. We were seated immediately and opted to try their special restaurant week menu which came with a cocktail or soft drink, an appetizer, entree and dessert. We both got their frozen margaritas as drinks, which were a good size and I liked how they are flavored with real fruit puree instead of syrups. I got the mexican corn as my appetizer which was a half ear on a stick, very flavorful with just the right amount of chili kick and lime. It wasn't covered in sauce either, so it wasn't super heavy. For the entrees we both got 2 types of tacos and shared them amongst us. I liked their fish taco a lot, probably my favorite thing from everything. Crispy, hot battered fish that isn't dry, a good amount of sauce toppings and most importantly not too salty! The shrimp tacos were great as well, but the fish tacos are a must try. Lastly, the dessert was decent but I would not order it separately outside of restaurant week. My friend and I shared both options (churros and flan). The churros were freshly made but definitely on the sweet side with a lot of sprinkled sugar. The ice cream was way too frozen. The flan was nice though, no major complaints. It was busy when we visited on a Friday night every table was full and there was people sitting at the bar. The service was friendly and quick but we didn't feel rushed. Our servers were very attentive and did their best to make it a great dining experience. The food on the other hand was less than enjoyable. Our waitress and the guy who claimed to be the owner berated us when we asked why we were charged a different price for guac compared to the menu and then was told oh we can change the price as we feel without warning. New Mexican in Forest Hills! Had to start with dessert first as the Vanilla Ice Cream that came with the Mexican Churros was melting fast. That was a great idea as the filled Churros were really good along with the Cojeta (Mexican Caramel) dipping sauce. The Churros were sugar dusted perfectly with a nice crisp exterior. The Vanilla Ice Cream is a nice accompaniment but may not be as great an accompaniment with takeout orders. Perhaps in lieu of Vanilla Ice Cream, a few more pieces of Churro would make sense? The Duck Enchiladas Rojas entree was delicious and stayed crispy even for takeout. Three rolls came with each order rolled with julienned tender duck. This entree was accompanied with a small side salad on the same plate and a separate plate of rice and beans. Carne Asada and Shrimp taco orders were equally tasty and gobbled up quickly by my companions. All taco orders were also accompanied by a separate plate of rice and beans as well. I am really impressed with the salad bowl I recently had from Mas Tortilla! The chicken is very tender and juicy, with rice and beans with the salsa and bush has the perfect amount of cilantro, the cheese, the sour cream and the guacamole all sitting on top of a crispy shell with corn scattered on top is a perfect juxtaposition. I found the tortilla soup to have a lot of flavor. The chicken tostada was pretty basic, nothing too special but fresh/crisp. The birria tacos were what we came for and I really enjoyed them. I do wish they came with slightly more consume though. The Mexican shrimp tacos were good but again, nothing too too special about them. Both desserts were incredible. This is where we knew the pre-fixe was worth it because otherwise we probably would've opted out of dessert and missed out. Overall, this is a great neighborhood spot. Everything was good, but the chicken was dry and flavorless. We ordered the homemade guacamole, and that was extremely good. Course 2 I did the birria tacos. You get 3 nicely portioned tacos Aside of rice and black beans. Again the meat was dry and flavorless even with the consume . Course 3 was the game changer of the night. Just as I was disappointed by 2 meat choices being dry. Here comes 2 Caramel filled warm churros with homemade vanilla ice cream on the side it was decadent. Mmm I will come back for guacamole, cocktail, and dessert. The food they need to work on. But it's a decent place to come and check out for yourself. I had been wanting to try Birria tacos & came across Mas Tortilla so I tried it out. I also ordered the Pozole soup & guacamole. I've never tried the Pozole soup, but it sounded good from the description & I love soup. So I wasn't a fan of the Birria tacos & didn't like the soup either. The tacos seem to be lacking flavor in my opinion & wasn't what I had in mind. The soup texture I just didn't like nor the taste. The guacamole was good, but to serve a to go guacamole in the flat plastic container for $12 seemed a bit overpriced for the small portion. I gave three stars because I appreciated the bartender making me a drink not on the menu & he had no problem doing so. Although I wasn't a fan of what I ordered, I would return again, but of course try something else. The atmosphere is cozy good for a small party or for singles since there is a bar area. read more
