Great margaritas and fantastic fresh guacamole. We ordered the queso as an appetizer and it looked amazing, heat sizzling off, however the taste didn't live up to the sight. It didn't have much taste, it was very oily and hardened up quick. The guacamole with the chips were excellent. You can pick mild, medium, or spicy, we chose medium, it was so good that we ended up ordering another one. I wasn't a fan of the chicken tacos, they were simple and I didn't love the texture of the chicken. My friend ordered the shrimp tacos and she loved them, they come with spicy mayo, slaw and are fried. I would say this place was more [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant itself is spacious and decorated well.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] All the staff was attentive and nice.
[[HIGHLIGHT]]Ayy Chihuahua is a hidden gem that absolutely blew us away! From the moment we walked in, the vibe was warm and welcoming nice ambiance with a fun, relaxed energy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We started with the guac (medium spice level), which was fresh and flavorful. For mains, we had the branzino, steak tacos, skit steak and a side of french fries to share . Honestly everything was great. The branzino was perfectly cooked crispy on the outside and tender inside, and the steak in the tacos was juicy and full of flavor. To top it all off, the drinks were on point. We had a passion fruit margarita on the rocks, a mango fruit margarita on the rocks that was perfectly balanced (not too sweet, not too strong), and the sangria was fruity and refreshing great pairing with the meal. We wrapped it all up with dessert. Definitely a place I'll be coming back to. Our server was very nice! Highly recommend if you're looking for good food, good drinks, and a solid chill vibe.
I am obsessed with their chile relleno (battered roasted poblano pepper stuffed with veggies and cheese in a delicious tomato sauce with a side of refried beans and rice). It's flavorful and light, and the perfect choice when you don't want to have meat. My hubby usually orders either the steak or chicken fajitas, which come out sizzling hot with tortillas, guac, sour cream, pico de gallo, rice and refried beans on the side. We usually order the tostaditas de atún as our app. Light and refreshing, especially when you sprinkle some green salsa on top. The food has been very tasty and fresh every time we've gone. I've had the Diosa Verde drink on one occasion. So good! Would highly recommend this place. (Attached pics are taken from multiple visits)
Wow! I've been underwhelmed by many Mexican themed restaurants in the Astoria neighborhood thus I resisted. Ayy Chihuahua does right all the things that I think other establishment do wrong for started, they make their own chipotle and jalapeño hot sauces. We were Mayer told they make every sauce in-house. This makes a big difference. We ordered the skirt steak and a shrimp garlic dishes (see picture). First observation is that the dishes were not overly salted. A theme they kept throughout. We ordered a Tres Leches desert with strawberry jam, but we're mostly sweet. The service was excellent too. We came in towards the end of the shift and the staff was a bit tardy but overall they were pleasant, professional, and knowledgeable. I can't wait to return...
3.25 Ambiance: fantastic. Great for girls night out, date nights, drink at the bar. Can seat small and large parties and has a lot of space. Food: I really wanted to love this place given the decor, excellent service and location, but the food was average at best. Best things we ate were the fajitas (steak is the best) and octopus/pulpo (under seasoned but well cooked). We loved the spicy sauces which did help add flavor to the food Would not order the nachos again. Drinks were okay.
Been here multiple times since they opened and only getting around now to sharing my thoughts. First thought? WOW. WE HAVE A WINNER! This location has housed a few failed restaurants previously but I think they finally found a long term tenant. The place is beautiful. It always has been but the touches they added from previous ownership make it their own and show their determination to stay put. Service is impeccable. Wait staff is always attentive and provide service with a smile. Be it Brunch, Dinner, drinks. They're always on point. The food is delicious. Fresh. ALWAYS FRESH. I literally taste the love that goes into both the food and the drinks. Mexican fare seems to be opening up everywhere but I implore you to give Ayy Chuhuahua a try. You will not be disappointed. Keep this establishment going. They deserve it! I haven't tried the speakeasy downstairs but it's on my list.
I went to New York to visit one of my friends and when she picked me up at JFK she suggested that we head over to this location for a good lunch. I will start with [[HIGHLIGHT]]when you first walk in the location is beautiful. It is very nicely decorated, and it has a huge bar.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We sat at a table and ordered a few margaritas and boy were they delicious. For appetizer we decided to actually order tacos. The tacos were super yummy. The tortilla felt fresh. For my main, I ordered the salad which had mango avocado, grilled chicken. Everything that I love. It was a very filling meal yet. I still felt light. I would definitely check out this location. They also had a a rating from the health department, which is always a plus.
If you're thinking about Ayy Chihuahua, stop thinking and go. The food was packed with flavor and some of the best Mexican I've had - the guac was fresh and spiced perfectly, the chicken tacos were delicious, and the nachos were some of the best nachos I've ever had. Not sure what they do to their chicken but the flavor is phenomenal. Even better than the food is the service - consistently checking in, refilling water, and making sure the experience is top notch with a smile. LOVED this experience and wish I could give more than five stars. Ayy Chihuahua is definitely towards the top of my list!
Very unfortunate to say this was an overall disappointing experience. Glad we tried a few things so we could get a fair sense of the menu/restaurant. The nachos tejanos were definitely well-liked. Tostadatitas de Atun tuna tostadas were okay. The esquites were made with canned corn...with water accumulated at the bottom. The shrimp tacos were very sparsely filled, and with shrimp that was cooked at least twice as long as it should have been. That point in particular was the most disappointing and took things from not great to bad. Sadly there are just too many solid options in the area for great Mexican food generally, and especially for this price point, for this not to have been pretty subpar.
Ayy Chihuahua is Astoria's finest Mexican restaurant by far. Everything about this new spot, including its dips, bread, and fresh octopus, is amazing. I was here at the beginning of the year with my partner, and based on so many recommendations, they did not disappoint in any way. Mexican restaurants come and go. I expect Ayy Chihuahua will be around for quite a while!

This place is definitely better than the name might imply. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The food, service, and vibes are all above average.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The only downside is that the price is also, shall we say, Manhattanized? For food, my group stuck with the beef, opting for the birria and NY strip steak tacos. Both were very tasty, and made even better with the spicy housemade salsas. The drinks may have been the highlight. I recommend the Volcan in particular. It's a very cessionable and refreshing summery mezcal drink, that could charm even the non-mezcal crowd. I also appreciated that they made a special tiny cheese quesadilla for my one-year old. The bill was high enough that it made me double check the math, and I wish that the taco dishes came with some type of side for $20+ a pop, but overall, Ayy Chihuahua is good enough that I'd come back again, at least for another round of drinks. read more

I got steak fajitas on this particular visit and it did not disappoint. The meat was not fatty, very flavorful, and tasted great with all the toppings. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Be aware if you do not like pets in restaurants, they considered the front inside portion of the restaurant to include the bar as part of the outside and acceptable. 3.5 stars ! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside is nice and the service was good.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Nothing crazy or standout about the food to me. The mole was good but the tacos my dad had just looked... sad. Very small for the price you pay. It's not outrageously expensive but I know I could get better for a cheaper price. read more
Sister restaurant of Chihuahua in Sunnyside. Beautiful, large, bright space conveniently located on Ditmars. Group of 7-8 on a Friday night. Most of the restaurant and bar were full. There were family-style prix fixe options with bottomless drinks that included guacamole, nachos, an entree, a beverage. Half of the group ordered prix fixe. Great food and drinks, plus the house hot sauces. Everyone said they enjoyed their mains (they definitely looked and smelled great!) Good portions! The staff was attentive, helpful and patient. I had the esquites, guacamole, nachos, Salmon del Pacifico and margaritas. Everything tasted great, my seafood tasted super fresh. I just wish my seafood dish had a little more kick/ seasoning to it, I ended up adding some of the house hot sauce/salsa to it. I also wish the house sauces were brought out with the apps automatically (I had to request them). I was told the mole sauce is good so I would definitely want to try a dish with that next time. I also want to try some of the other cocktails or one of the margarita flavors (i.e. tamarind). Great addition to the area, hope they do well! read more

Good Mexican spot! They let me order the Birria Taco without the cheese which was a plus. I forgot the name of the drink I got but it was really delicious! Only thing is this the prices are higher than I would like. read more
The decor here is very nice and looks like the vibes would be great on a weekend. We however came on a Tuesday evening and it was pretty empty. If i wanted to go out to eat for the decor and drinks, I would pick this Mexican spot but the food on the other hand... We got the queso fundido appetizer. It came with tortilla on the side and no chips. I guess the menu didn't list chips and we should've known but.... Queso with no chips?!? What?!? When we asked the waitress, she was nice enough to bring out a basket of chips for us. The queso was good and cheesy but very salty. It was also extremely small. For my main, I opted for Birria tacos ($21 for 3). No mix and match for tacos. The consume was very bland and flavorless. No spice whatsoever. The short rib inside the tacos was good but was lacking seasoning. I had to lather these up in the green salsa they provided since the consume was bland. Others got the sear and sea tacos, chicken enchiladas with salsa verde, steak fajitas, and the soup. The steak fajitas were cooked well actually. My husband's chicken enchiladas were pretty bland too. I can't say the food overall was bad, but it didn't hit the spot and there is definitely better tasting spots out there. This restaurant just opened so maybe they'll take some time to work on the food. Overall, a decent spot on Ditmars! read more

What an amazing addition to Ditmars Blvd! We came to this place after a recommendation from my best friend and it did not disappoint. To drink, I got the flora and fauna. To start, We shared the nachos tejanos with chicken and the tostaditas de atun. The nachos were Crispy, cheesy and full of flavor. A little spicy too but just a kick! As a main dish, we all got tacos. I got the Birria, my best friend got the steak and my other friend the fish ones. All of them came in threes and the presentation was beautiful. They were delicious and filling! Definitely worth another trip! The service was so good. All the waiters were super attentive and nice. We enjoyed this place so much We are coming back next week to celebrate my best friend's birthday. See you soon! read more
10/10 food and 11/10 service! I'll admit I was skeptical at first because a lot of places have been opening and closing in this area, but this place did not fail to impress. We got the Salmon del Pacifico, guacamole, queso fundido, Nachos Tejanos, and steak. The sauce for the salmon was so delicious and I loved how it came with additional seafood such as shrimp, scallops, etc. Guac was refreshing. The queso was also an awesome savory appetizer to start with. The nachos tejanos was a good sharing size for my family as an appetizer. My dad and brother also really enjoyed their steak! We ended the night with a piece of tres leches, which I would highly recommended. This is a big space and we didn't have to wait long for a table on a Saturday night. It is a good space for bringing bigger parties. It also has an interesting aesthetic. Overall, I would come back as the food was great, but the service even better! read more

Sighs... it wasnt the worst, definitely wasnt the best- pretty far from it we just ordered some tacos, the fish tacos was tempura style but they definitely over fried it ... so mich we had them re do it because we wanted to eat and couldnt eat the first batch . It came back and it was much better after we took 10 mins asking then to "not cook it all the way" smh . My tacos werent good either - the guac was good and they were friendly - but we need good food and drinks as well . Wont be back read more

I had my sister's 50th birthday dinner here! I can't say enough about how good the food and drinks were, the service was exceptional and the staff was so attentive! Oscar, the manager was the nicest and most catering to me, he made it so easy to decide that, ofcourse, we were having our party here! Everything was perfect, I highly recommend this restaurant for large gatherings and intimidate dinners, it's a beautiful restaurant with a very pleasant ambiance! Once again, food was great and service, manager and staff all perfect! Will definitely go back!! read more

I loved the restaurant as soon as I walked in! It was clean and vibrant with beautiful decor and ambiance! Service was great! We were greeted as soon as we walked in. Our waiter, Carlos, was attentive and friendly! The food and drinks were delicious! We started with spicy margaritas, elote, and guacamole! They made the guacamole fresh and exactly how we wanted it-spicy! For our main dishes, we had NY strip tacos and chicken tacos. They were also fresh and delicious! Can't forget about the amazing churro for dessert! Can't wait to go back!! Great addition to Astoria! read more

Decided to celebrate Taco Tuesday when visiting in Astoria. We arrived around 7, just missing Happy Hour but regardless I needed a drink. Started out with their signature. It was perfect! For our entrees we had the chicken tacos and the camarones al ajo. Definitely hit the spot. We passed on dessert but will be back! read more
