The museum covers every war since the Revolutionary War up through our service in Iraq and Afghanistan and highlights Indiana's involvement in those conflicts. The displays are incredible. There are vehicles, aircraft, and countless artifacts from the wars on display. Eventually, it has become a focal point to pay tribute to an honor to soldiers who have served and given their lives for many of the engagements that American Armed Forces have participated in. At this site, you will find a large and interesting museum, containing hundreds of flags many from the American Civil War. other unique artifacts are present as well. There is a full scale reproduction of the radio room of the USS Indianapolis. And a large auditorium. The memorial is built from Ashlar Indiana Limestone, as are many buildings in this part of the State. It is neo-classical architecture, and the memorial design is based upon the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This is the central point, I think, of the city of Indianapolis. There are many beautiful architectural wonders in this town worth seeing, but the Indiana war Memorial stands out among them.

The Hendricks County Museum is amazing. The Museum was once the County jail and home of the local…read moresheriff. We were given a fabulous personal and guided tour of the museum by Judy W., who is a volunteer at the museum. Judy is knowledgable and passionate about the history of Hendricks County. She was engaging throughout the tour. On our tour, we saw special exhibits of Hendricks County artifacts. We visited the original jail cells! Prisoners were held in the home where the sheriff and his family lived. We toured the entire house, which is filled with antiques and vintage items that would have been consistent with the age of the residence. The Victorian home has been remarkably restored and maintained. There was a room filled with war artifacts dating back to the Civil War. There was another room filled with information and artifacts from Normal College, which closed many years ago. The tour was free, but donations are accepted that help care for the home. There were many stairs, so I'm not sure that the tour is totally accessible. There is street parking available. The tour is suitable for school age children and adults. Plan about 45 minutes for the tour. The hours are limited, so call ahead to ensure they are open. I highly recommend a visit if you like local history.

Home to the former Sheriff, it's been preserved as it was in its prime, complete with the in-home JAIL CELLS that held the town's prisoners under the same roof as the sheriff's children. Ask about the prisoner escapes - there's some great stories there. Seeing old-fashioned kid's bedrooms, a beautiful kitchen, huge staircase, and Civil War memorabilia galore, this spot offered way more than I would've guessed. We came in through The Indiana State museum and walked out on the canal and entered in the back way. We were greeted by the most wonderful volunteer, very helpful and enjoying herself. We entered to music playing and people exploring the grounds outside. Plenty of space to walk and enjoy outside. We walked up the steps to discover the play area and more steps going up to outdoor seating for the cafe. We entered the kids play area. I loved the creative play offered inside. The library and all of the resources provided. My grandson had the opportunity to play and explore for a while. Pose for a few pictures and then upstairs to the exhibit area where some vendors were set up. I always enjoy engaging with the vendors and finding out about their different offerings. I purchased and few things and then we made our way through the museum. It was a wonderful time. Something educational for my grandlove and outof the norm for us. They have made some upgrades ans changed some things since I was here last. Looking forward to our next opportunity to stop in and see whats in store.

Think sheep, goats, peacocks, chickens, ducks and so on... Make sure you get some feed for the animals before you enter, you will want to feed them for sure. There are animals in enclosures as well as some free roaming piggies, chickens and cats. Make sure you close the gates when going from one section to the next. Don't forget to visit the apartment pigs. Those poor souls grew up in apartments and do not roam outside because they have never been outside. The poor things. Any of the caretakers there can and will tell you loads of stories about the various animals. Very interesting and varied backgrounds. Make sure to stop by the giftshop for some unique gifts, especially piggie themed. There are also always special events on the calendar and when in bloom, you can also pick your own flowers and pay by stem. I highly recommend a visit here with or without the kids. Just make sure you wear shoes and clothing you don't mind getting dirty.

It's truly spectacular to wander around the grounds after dark to enjoy the extraordinary display of holiday lights and decor. I will definitely return every winter to see what changes they make (each year has some variations). The Lily house decorations are always incredible. So much dedication and thoughtfulness put into the handmade displays and attention to detail is unparalleled. My visit to the home of President Benjamin Harrison has been an unexpected highlight of my Indiana…read moreventures. We visited on a recent Saturday morning without reservations. Tickets can be purchased on line and receive a $2 discount (of $16 admission). Full price tickets can be purchased in the Welcome Center behind the Harrison home. Discounts are available for seniors and military. There is a brief film and a few artifacts in the Welcome Center along with a gift shop. We were able to join the first tour of the day, which only had three people including us. The docent-led tours start at 10:00 and run throughout the day. Gary, started our tour with a brief introduction and handed us off to docent Don S. at the front door of the Italianate Victorian home built in 1875. The beautifully restored home holds much of the original Harrison furniture. Don described the Harrison family dynamics, the history of the furniture and aspects of presidential life. We walked through rooms on three floors filled with artifacts and some of Mrs. Harrison's personal artwork. I could easily imagine the family at home during the tour. The third floor former ballroom, contains the Presidential Library (opened by appointment only, but visible to visitors). Other artifacts are also on display there. The 75 minute tour seemed to fly by as Don relayed interesting stories and anecdotes about the home and family. There is a dedicated free parking lot on the northside of the house or street parking is available. Elevators in the home are available for those who cannot climb the narrow stairs. The tour is not suitable for young children or strollers. Totally a must see for history, government and architecture buffs. The Harrison home is an Indiana treasure.
