I was hoping I would find a suburban area YMCA in Houston similar to the one I went to when I lived in the Dallas area and this Monty Ballard YMCA fits just the bill. This Katy Cinco Ranch location is very family oriented and has plenty of space & equipment. I have yet to have any issues with waiting to use equipment even when it is busier. You will find a surplus of treadmills, free weights, squat racks, benches, and more for all your exercise needs. There is also a child care area available for the younger ones. In addition, they also have a gymnasium with multiple side rims, as well as both an indoor and outdoor pool. Other areas available include a stretch room, cycling room, group exercise room, and another smaller weight room. They have plenty of locker/storage space as well, located is some weight rooms, outside the restroom/pool area, and inside the restrooms as well (the ones in the restroom require your own lock). One of the things I love most is they have a water fountain with a filtered water bottle filler so I can bring my empty water bottle from home and fill it with water at the Y for my workout. Another thing I appreciate are the several sanitizing stations for your hands and for wiping down equipment. Overall I'm extremely happy with this Y. The staff are very friendly, they have plenty of parking and allow 3 free guest passes per year (my previous Y made you pay for all guest passes). The only slight negative I've found so far is that they don't provide basketballs for the gymnasium due to people not returning them, which is understandable. I used to only sing uptempo tracks, but since visiting this Y, I've been singing Ballards too. It's a clean YMCA and the front desk could definitely be a lot friendlier, which is part of the reason I don't give them 5. They don't have as much equipment as the other one in Katy, but it's not bad and it's somewhat similar, and might even be a 5 star if the greeting staff had been friendlier. It's often quite quiet in here which I like, and which you wouldn't expect considering a lot of fairly well-to-do people live around here and Cinco Ranch isn't flush with gyms (or flushing toilets) (OK it probably is). It has plenty of space and is a pretty good gym all things considered, and I'll probably be using it again in the near future. The hard part is getting in the door, of course. The staff is friendly for the most part, they keep the equipment working, lots of treadmills, a couple of stairmasters, heated pool, etc. It's a mix of young and old, so not an annoying place where they get mad if you make noise with the weights. My boyfriend & I come here 5/6 times a week. The staff is always extremely friendly, the place is ALWAYS clean, the machines are in great shape. Cam is the best gym worker, always helping the younger kids with proper form. Diego is always cleaning and making sure the floor is in great shape! Shout out to these young men and this ymca. My son also has a great time in the child care area while I work out. There are always multiple caretakers interacting, playing, reading with your child. This place is a great place for families. So many options for exercise, the instructors are some of the best I've seen. I would like to compliment Jen Ladner as the best instructor I've ever met. Her class is so upbeat, fun and strong, she really takes you to the next level. Also Ivy Yeoh is so dynamic and fun. The kids love the playcare and we love the pool, with life guards, safety daily, clean facilities and overall great friendly staff. The only improvement I can think of is the music playing at the pool sometimes by the young lie guards is not child friendly both in English and Spanish, profane language, sex and drugs music is not exactly what I like the kids to hear at a pool. I'm sure they can change that. For the amount I use the club in the summer the value is great for a family of 3, I might just use it in the summer, the price becomes a little too much for me for the rest of the year since the outdoor pool is not open and being the kids only use the play care for an hour 2-3 times a week and not the actual gym. I signed up for a family membership at this location was $99 a month is what I was told the very first month after the month I signed up when they charged my card. They charged my card $120 and that was for the month of March. I called spoke with the person that was in charge of accounts left him a voicemail. This was six weeks ago. I have not been called back yet, I'm about to fall fraud on my credit card because I asked for the $120 to be refunded and my membership to be canceled. The YMCA has recently changed their pool rules and they are awful--especially for new swimmers. Forcing kids to wear life jackets, even when they are actively being held and guided by parents, is counter productive and inhibits their ability to learn how to swim. Learning how to swim is key to water safety and preventing drownings. Do better YMCA!!! read more

We signed up to do boys flag football and ended up being co-ed and poorly run. Due to "covid" we had to play the SAME TEAM each week for the ENTIRE season.. the other team's coach was a dad who had some major issues that ended up getting so bad that he was fighting with our teams coach and other parents. They ended up cancelling the season and refunding us our money. Worst experience ever. read more

We have three kids. An 11yo and twin 7yos. Back in mid February we contacted this Y for 12 lessons for each child to be completed before May 1st. We paid upfront for 36 lessons and ended up with 2 lessons for the 11yo and 3 for each of the twins. They refunded the outstanding lessons but the lessons they had were frankly useless . If they had informed us earlier we could have hired another instructor somewhere else. Very very disappointed with the entire YMCA team here. read more

My husband and I have been members since 2016. These 2 stars are only for Roberto's Latin Dance class (I would rate 5 stars only for Roberto). We keep on going there because he is great. However, yesterday my husband was waiting for me to finish my class, sitting in one of the benches, and a lady, who said is the director, sat near him and told that she needed to speak "in private" with him. She asked him if he uses deodorant. I must clarify: my husband is a teacher and he not only showers every day, uses deodorant, but also likes to use fragrance. He is a clean person. There are people who exercise there that have a foul odor but this is a GYM so people exercise and sweat, right? The lady told my husband that people reported that he "smells bad" and that he must be aware of that but he is still "allowed to use the facility". My husband felt humiliated and discriminated. Where are the Christian values that this place is supposed to enhance? We are very disappointed. read more

What's in a name? Once the Ken Lay YMCA it was renamed Katy YMCA after Kenny fell from grace with the Enron fiasco. Now it is named after Monty. Okay, what is inside is still the same even with all the name changes. YMCA is a family place to go. They offer rec sports, workout facilities, pool and tons of programs. Over the years I coached Y sports like basketball and learned this is a good program to teach kids the fundamentals of sports without exposing the kids to the more stressful competitive programs. If the sport is good for them then you should move into those leagues. If not, your child will know the sport and be able to say they played it in their youth. The weight training facility is excellent with a room for machines and a second room that focuses on more hardcore conditioning. Y offers other programs like Togo, spin cycling and etc which other members of my household have joined I could go on with pages of descriptions but I won't. Stop in and see for yourself! read more

The Katy YMCA is a family-friendly health club that offers a variety of classes and programs for the community. MY HISTORY I first started visiting this location years ago, when it was called the Ken Lay YMCA. It was much smaller then. Then Lifetime Fitness came in and we were wowed by the size and lavishness of the new gym, so we moved our memberships there until Lifetime became too expensive to tolerate. The YMCA expanded its location and changed its name. Within the past few years, my wife rejoined the Y, then my daughter and I did about 6 months ago. My daughter and I have also done the excellent father-daughter camping program (Princesses/Trailblazers) in the past through the Y without being members. SPINNING CLASSES Coming to the present, in the past year, I have gotten into road cycling, and wanted to find a good spinning class. The Y offers a 5:15am class Monday-Friday that fits great with my work schedule. There are also two back-to-back classes Saturday morning, which is great if you need a weekend ride replacement, and another late Sunday afternoon if you have a busy weekend. The instructors are very nice, and do a great job of pushing you through the workouts. About half of the workouts follow the Les Mills plan, so you know you will get the same workout with any instructor. WEIGHTS The Y has a good-sized weight room with a variety of machines and some Christian rock music playing softly in the background. I do use the weight room and it does not get very crowded early in the morning, My daughter also uses the weight room occasionally to help her with swimming training. CARDIO I don't use the cardio machines much, but there is a good variety of machines and two separate rooms with the cardio machines. The smaller, more private room also has Expresso exercise bikes with simulated courses and competitors shown on computer monitors. These bikes get used quite a bit. LOCKER ROOM The locker room is small, but the showers are full-force and don't have water-saver attachments. Normally, the soap dispensers are fully stocked. You do need to bring your own towel and lock. There are only four small benches for changing, so occasionally I find myself having to move my things to make room for someone else. I never have to wait for one of the 8 available private showers. MAINTENANCE The Y is very clean, and most of the time the machines are in working order. The spinning bikes get a lot of use, but I never see a bike that is broken. The worst I can say is that some of the spinning bikes need their resistance adjustments fine-tuned. CROWDS I have not encountered crowds too much, but they appear to mostly start late morning to mid-day. Saying that, note that some classes do fill up. If you want to attend a spinning class, I would recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early, because I have been to one or two 5:15am classes where I have not been able to get a bike because I arrived too late. I also like that the Y has a second entrance on the other side of the complex that opens later in the morning (normally starting at 8am on Saturday). This makes parking easier. IMPROVEMENTS The only thing that I think could be better at the Y is the free coffee it offers. Then again, it is FREE COFFEE... If I want the good stuff, I go across the street to Kosmos. COST The day I wrote this review, I received a letter about the Y undergoing a price increase of $2 a month, but the Y also says this this is the first price increase for my membership type in 3 years. IMHO, it's still a better deal for my family than Lifetime and is also a not-for-profit. read more

Online reviews Our experience at YMCA MONTY BALLARD IN CINCO RANCH in Katy, TX: Our basketball coach is a member at the Y, and (without knowing we were doing anything wrong) suggested we could meet there for the boys to have some extra playing time. We have done this several times at the YMCA location on Main St in Katy, where they have been nothing but kind and friendly toward us. In fact one of the Monty Ballard staff members mentioned that he has SEEN us at the other location before, yet he didn't find the need to tell us we were doing anything wrong. LET ME BE CLEAR, THERE HAVE NOT BEEN ANY ISSUES IN THE PAST. Today, we met at the Monty Ballard location. We walked in and asked for the basketball gym. The lobby was mostly empty, so the staff was not busy or distracted. We were greeted and showed the gym. Several of us dropped off our sons and left. NO ONE ON STAFF: 1. Asked us to sign in. 2. Asked us what we were doing. 3. Asked us not to leave while our boys were there. WE DID NOT KNOW ANY OF THIS WAS A PROBLEM. Upon returning to pick my son up, I walked past the front desk and was again greeted, but not stopped. I got to the gym, where an employee AGGRESSIVELY stopped me and demanded me to fill out a waiver. Rather than waiting 60 seconds for me to pass my baby off to a friend, he went and got 3 other staff members and they aggressively approached me and accused me of not complying. I had agreed to come, yet was not given even a moment to follow. I was spoken to in a very hostile tone when told I couldn't leave while my son was there and that what I had done was illegal. I apologized and tried to explain that I did not mind signing a waiver and that I wouldn't have left him if I had known, but that no one on their staff had informed me. They could've politely stopped me any of the times I walked in. They could've politely asked that I sign a waiver and explain their rules. They chose hostility for no reason. They then allowed me to join our basketball team in the gym. About 5 minutes later, about 6-8 staff members swarmed our practice and began to very aggressively yell at us and said that they were calling the cops. There was no warning. They didn't even ask us to leave the premises before escalating to calling the cops. They didn't even want us to let our boys change their shoes. They refused to show our coach the rules that said he couldn't be there playing basketball with our kids. We had clearly made it through an entire 1.5 hour practice without being asked to leave. Why ask us to sign waivers and allow us to return to the gym if they wanted us to leave the premises? When I was signing my waiver, they could've asked me to take my son and leave. There was absolutely no explanation. I know that none of the parents would have minded the rules or waivers, IF WE HAD JUST BEEN INFORMED. Instead we were treated with prejudice. WE DIDNT KNOW ANY OF THE RULES OR ABOUT THE WAIVERS BECAUSE THEY GREETED US AND ALLOWED US IN WITHOUT EXPLAINING ANY OF IT TO US. THEY SHOWED US THE GYM WE COULD USE WITHOUT ASKING US ANY QUESTIONS. We don't mind that there are rules and that we need to follow them, we take no issue with that. Our real problem was the HOSTILE AND PREJUDICED MANNER in which we were treated. It was unnecessary. We can be respectful of the rules, if they had just taken the time to calmly and respectfully talk to us. There was plenty of opportunity to explain the rules to us or our coach. They could've even used that opportunity to offer membership and explain how that works. Our experience of practicing at the Y over the past month as well as the recommendations of friends had really led us to believe this would be a great place to work out and bring our family. For a YMCA this one is not one you would want to go swim at. I was a member for a few months and I joined only to swim laps. I was told there is always a lap lane available. Which was true but the amount of children that would pass through the lane or just float in the lap lane was absurd. It was impossible to do a single lap without running into a child or some kid being thrown on top of you. For the lifeguards they do nothing just stand and watch. No authority what so ever. I even made a complaint to the head guard or manager and they simply said let the guard on duty know and they will take care of it for you. I did bring it to the guards attention but after a whistle blow or two they gave up. I did notice that the Zumba classes were not interrupted by the children. After some time of battling through the kids I ended my membership. read more

The Katy Family YMCA is excellent! Everything is brand new and in excellent condition. The wellness center has about 20 high-quality treadmills, 3 stair-masters and about 10 elliptical machines. Each with earphone plugs to listen in on any of the 8 TV screens. In the adjacent weight room, plenty of free weights, cable machines, straight bars, Smith machines, etc, etc. Full-sized locker rooms for male and female complete with shower facilities. No towels though, bring your own. Indoor and outdoor pools complete with lap area, kids water park and 2 Schlitterbahn-style body slides. Life guards all over. Group classes in a dedicated studio room with lights, sound and equipment to get the group moving to the beat. Large gymnasium for volleyball, basketball, etc. Dedicated spin class room with about 20-30 bikes. Down the hall is the new fitness room with another 20 treadmills, 10 ellipticals and bikes, each with own 5" TV screen. The floor trainers are there for anything from chit-chatting about your day to asking fitness questions to getting a spot for some heavy lifting. Nothing beats this place! read more

Overall this YMCA is ok. It is over crowded!!! The daycare has way too many kids at peak time. Classes are overcrowded and the weight area is so small!!!!! The YMCA feels dirty due to overcrowded! Word is out, It is in the works a new KATY YMCA!!!! FINALLY!!!!!! We need squash courts in katy!! There are a ton of squash players who travel to downtown or city center just to play squash. We held our son's birthday party at Camp Cinco ran by the Monty Ballard YMCA. It was a complete success. The cute main room in the ranch house was the perfect backdrop to the camp themed party. The kids had a blast running and playing on all the equipment. Best of all many had an amazing, confidence building experience on the ropes course! Sid was a great resource in planning the party. Both he and Sean were amazing with the kids. I can't wait to send my son here for day camp this summer! read more

This Y might be a good bet for child programs, but my only experiences have been so-so to poor. First, the pools. They are closed random times not stated on the website or at the front desk, even when the schedule says otherwise. Sometimes there is an explanation (cleaning), other times not. Can't they plan their cleanings around the pool schedule? Even if you ask at the front if the pool is open, they rarely know. Swim lessons: we attended the parent-child classes, and the instructor didn't seem to know anything about that age group. We've gone to other y's where classes were much better. We started with 10 the first day and by the second, only 3 of us returned. The exercise classes were good, although crowded. The stroller fit class is a nice touch, but the instructors don't incorporate the kids as the description states, so it's basically you exercising while the kids stare at you. And that's when the instructor shows up. Customer service: this has never been their strong point. They let people jump in line before you at the membership area and front desk when you need assistance. It seems like they don't care much about keeping their members happy or selling a product, which it is a nonprofit, but still. read more

I've been coming here for years ! Normally I love YMCA's but this one has gotten WAY too crowded in the past couple of years! Do not come during weekdays from 5-8:30pm or on Sundays as soon as it opens at 1pm! Barely any parking available and the gym is overpacked! In order to actually enjoy the gym without every machine being taken you must go there enough to know when the crowd shows up and when the crowd leaves! Also as a swimmer I can't have a decent workout without kids coming in my lane and blocking the way! The lifeguards do not enforce the fact that those lanes are STRICTLY for lap swimming only when the pool schedule says so, as well as the sign that is put outside in front of the lanes for everyone to see! They also don't have an interval clock for swimmers to use in either the outdoor or indoor pool the indoor pool is not 25 yards long like a standard lap pool. There is also a swim lane missing a swimming guideline ( the line that guides swimmers on the bottom of the pool ). Some of the trainers and employees are nice but the ones at the front desk are rude at times! They make mistakes on the guest passes all the time! I can't seem to buy a guest pass for my friends without an ISSUE popping up! Overall, it's not the greatest pool for lap swimmers and too crowded! Don't bring your friends ! Update 10/28: I just want to point out that despite the one lady that gave me issues at the front desk, the personal trainer, Zach is one of the sweetest people I know. We were excited to join this club and had a decent introduction. The tour that we waited 40 min for was nice. But our most recent experience was one that left us a bit baffled and certainly more than frustrated, one that led us to withdraw our membership here. Making adults feel bad is one thing, but when you tell my three girls you don't want them there, that is something totally different. We spent hours and multiple conversations with employees, managers and the director and ultimately the dance instructor. We just wanted to sign up our girls for dance. The information on the website said spots were available in the different age classes. But each employee we spoke to gave us different information. Some said the class was full, others said there were spots open. Finally after reaching the director for approval, they told us to go to the class to try it out. But the dance instructor treated my wife and daughters like second rate people. Very unprofessional attitude, and told my girls "I don't even know why you are here. I don't want anyone else in my class." My girls left and didn't want to go back. They told me how the instructor spoke to them like they were stupid. SMH. Get your act together. This is the YMCA, not some posh elite dance academy. Even at that, people should be treated with respect. read more

I began working there in 2015, never had a problem with the old sport directors, Tyke and Ryan. As a Sport Official I, i worked my way to a Sports Official III and then also worked as a Lead Staff for the sports department. Tyke and Ryan were both very understand and amazing bosses, the kind you get once in a life time. They were organized and built relationships with each and every child, along with the parents and employees, (i learned their ways and built relationships too) they listened to ways they could make the program better and made fixes so that parents could be happy with their children. Summer of 2018 changes began happening in management and both of the directors were replaced. I tried to help the new directors in quickly understanding how things were usually done and how the program and everything went (since i had been working there for 3 years i knew everything all around, bc of "Lead" title) As time went by, parents would complain to me about how unorganized the new directors were, how they would ask for things and try to contact the directors and just got pushed to the side. The time came and i lost my job, tried to talk to the directors and they just push everything aside and ignored me (what they do best). I don't recommend the sports there, not now at-least. I'm proud to say that I worked at the YMCA bc what better job then the two things i love, children and sports, i gave the YMCA the best 3 years, i witnessed children grow and helped them by teaching them many things. The management is terrible there and the communication is worst, don't waste your time and money, i recommend any other sport programs for your children as well as any other gym. read more

This is in regards to some pool rules. My kids, 7 and 9, who are on a swim team and are competent swimmers, failed the swim test yesterday and were unable to use the slides, which is all we came there for. What frustrated me was that they were not allowed to retest that day simply because they misunderstood what the lifeguard was saying. They thought "swim to the middle and stop" meant stop and stand up on the bottom and wait to do the next thing. Because they touched the bottom, she would not let them pass the test. I talked to her and asked to test them again now that they understood, and it is not allowed at that pool. Every YMCA has a slightly different method of swim tests, and at one we go to, they let them hang on the wall before they do a floating or a treading water test. It's so ridiculous. The lifeguard even said she saw that my kids could swim well, but she was unable to pass them or retest them that day. She also said other kids have made the same mistake, so maybe there needs to be a change in the way it is explained to them, or there needs to be some flexibility about testing them a second time. If I child seems to be struggling (and any lifeguard can tell if they are a competent swimmer or not just by watching), I can understand why they might not retest that child, but when it's obvious that they can swim, that is just not fair and it ruined our day. My kids still had event numbers on their arms and names on their back from a swim meet last weekend!! I"m sure the rest of the gym is very nice, but this incident at the pool infuriated me. read more

I would give it 2 1/2 stars, however since this rating is not possible, by the time you read this, 2 stars will likely be most appropriate for this Y. Please read on. We have been a part of this Y for going on 10 years, back when it was named for a guy named K. Lay. However, it is a far cry from what it was back then. The place has had some expansion over time, but not nearly enough to keep up with growth. It is quite overrun by members today, coming from the constant stream of people at the front desk filling out the paperwork to become members. This is no surprise given the area's near viral rate of growth, the low monthly fees, and the fact that there is no limit to the number of members that they will accept. The influx of members is so bad that even the huge parking lot is no longer enough to keep up...it is now very difficult to find a parking space. What the Y leadership should look at is building a new facility to the north and perhaps another to the west. This would relieve the overcrowding at the Cinco Y and improve quality and availability of the facilities for everyone. The other option is to cap membership at some level suited to the facilities that are offered. Alas, this Y is now more of a people zoo than a place for a family to enjoy. Let's hope they build more facilities to serve the huge numbers coming in... read more

I've been a member at a lot of different YMCA's. I couldn't do it. So incredibly overcrowded. I toured it twice thinking the first time might have been a fluke, it wasn't. The facility could be updated. The instructors are generally very good. As for the child watch (where you leave your kid while you're working out). Management doesn't always seem proactive in dealing with issues. The child care staff has some REALLY great ladies but there's also some that should not be working with children at all. One of them being a lady named Lilian, whom management knows about but she continues to work there. They also have male child care workers, which even my pediatrician had something to say about that given the statistics. I've walked in to find a grown man carrying a small child on his hip several times. I've heard many of my other mom friends complain about that too. Given that it's a family gym, it'd be nice if they were more proactive and took some precautions that I've seen some of the other child cares take. All in all, not bad but could use some improvements. read more
