Bigger than usual and tender. I would drive for these. Ribs. Pork ribs that were tender and smoked. Not Memphis but very good. Brisket. Lean and tender. Personally I prefer fatty brisket. This place is as great! Stopped by here after a hike at Great Falls park and I was starving. The staff were friendly and accommodating when I asked if their outdoor seating was dog friendly. They set up our table outside with no problem and brought us a water bowl. We asked the waitress what her favorites on the menu were and she said everything was good but most folks go for the brisket, pulled pork, or ribs. So we did just that. I asked for the pulled pork sandwich with baked Mac n cheese and it was perfect. I like my sandwich on the saucier side so I mad ask for a side of BBQ sauce next time just to try more of their sauce variety. Overall a great casual summer spot. read more

We were heading back home but first needed to grab a bite. This place had a high rating on Google and was only 7 min away so we decided to give it a shot! I'm giving this place a 3 bc the staff was nice and attentive. While I loved the menu, I was underwhelmed with my meal. My pulled pork sandwich was lacking in seasoning and flavor but the diff bbq sauces helped. They allowed us to try an assortment of sauces at no additional charge and they was really nice! The fries, shoestring I believe, were the best part of my meal. I just love crispy, perfectly salted fries. Oh and the sweet iced tea, perfect! I got take out and ordered the burnt ends, half a chicken with a side of brisket, smoked turkey with a side of pulled chicken, and sides of baked beans (they contain meat), collard greens (also contain meat), mac and cheese, and slaw. The burnt ends were outstanding-- juicy and well flavored; no BBQ sauce needed, but the Mookie BBQ sauce did make them better. The brisket, chicken, and turkey were all very good, and the various BBQ sauces (I got spicy, fire, Mookie's, sweet, and vinegar) provided excellent flavoring. The food is delicious. The brisket is smoked just right. The pulled pork, pulled chicken, sausage and burnt ends and ribs all hit the spot. We tried the potato salad, collard greens and baked beans. They had great flavour, the collard greens were perfect and the potato salad was delicious. The baked beans were perfect. And lastly the cornbread was perfectly moist and not too dry. Visited on a recommendation from a friend that likes to eat here. Sat in the bar area so that we could watch the hockey game. Lots of tvs and the bartender came over very quickly and asked if we would like a drink. I ordered the Pitmaster platter and substituted the pulled chicken for extra brisket. The food arrived very quickly, within 5 minutes, and I was happy because I was starved. The food looked great and I got one of each sauce. To my surprise, the food was lukewarm. Even the sausage that should have been hot even if the rest was warm. Two minutes into the meal I was disappointed because the food was all cold. The couple next to me ordered burgers and said that they were also just warm. I added some salt and pepper to the potato salad to give it some flavor. I walked in and a female waitstaff, questioned immediately, UBER Eats? I explained I was there to collect my own order. She disappeared without apology. It is honest work to deliver food, and I thank everyone who does choose that work option. Yet her ignorance is off putting and was offensive. I had to wait longer than expected for our takeout order. When I left they did not include our drinks, which wasn't discovered until we were already at Algonquin Park having our picnic. I paid for them so there was an added $6.00 tip. Finally tried the BBQ after couple of missed opportunity. I am a brisket person and I have to say Mookie's brisket is the leanest I have ever had. There is no fat on my brisket nor my son's brisket sandwich. Eating the brisket platter required a lot of sauce. At least they had great sauces. I got a side order of 1/4 racks ribs and it suppose to come with 3 bones and I only got 2. If that is a quarter, whole rack would only have 8 bones. Interesting enough, we did get a rack of ribs and it looks to be more than 8 bones. The sides were so-so. The best are the hot fries, coleslaw, which is not overly sweet, and Mac and cheese. The potato salad was ok. Tasted like something I could get at a grocery store. The server is friendly and service is good. The restaurant interior is simple like mission or red hot. There are outdoor seating as well. I would probably not go back as our staples of ribs and brisket are really just 2 stars. The sauces are really what is giving the place the extra star. read more

Had such a great visit here last weekend! Our server, Steven, was so sweet, with excellent recommendations, and really made the meal great. We ordered the Mac n Cheese Balls (10/10 must try), smoked sausage w/ collard greens and chili (9/10), pulled pork with collards and fries (9/10), and a pulled pork sandwich with Mac n cheese. Had triple berry cobbler, key lime pie, and a sundae for dessert. They had killer bbq sauce options, the collard greens were stellar, and the Mac n cheese was darn good! There are a lot of mediocre BBQ spots in this area. Mookie's is not one of them. They feature flavorful, well-smoked, and quality meats with the Burnt Ends being the clear star of the show. I've not had better in the in the DMV. The brisket, ribs, wings, and turkey are all pretty good not great. I was not a fan of the pulled pork, but it has been a while since I tried it. As for the sides, the potato salad is my favorite. The collards, baked beans, and cornbread are all good too. The mac and cheese is just okay. The sauces do not really do it for me, but that is not a dealbreaker since I usually use my own anyway. All in all, Mookie's is well worth trying for dine-in, takeout, or delivery. read more

I'm extremely excited to say I think I finally found a solid BBQ spot in NoVa. I grew up in the south and am pretty picky/openly opinionated about BBQ. We ordered the Pitmaster sampler to try a little bit of everything and it did not disappoint!! I will say the Mac and cheese is just ok, and while the menu states you get 2 pieces of cornbread we only got 1. The ribs literally fell off the bone and was so tender! The pulled chicken with the mustard sauce?! Must try. Service was also great but we went on a super slow day so I can't give a definitive review in that. I suggest trying all of the sauces but also trying everything without the sauces first. We'll definitely be back! This place has the proper look and feel of an authentic BBQ place (not too fancy inside and really friendly staff) and the BBQ is okay but nothing amazing. I had the pulled pork combo with BBQ Beans and collards and I added a 1/4 rack of ribs. The pulled pork was okay but didn't have much of a smoky flavor and the fact that it came pre-sauced was a red flag to me. As they say, great meat doesn't need to come pre-sauced. The ribs were pretty good but a little fatty and dry, which happens sometimes with ribs. The beans and collards were both unremarkable and the corn bread didn't seem too fresh and was sort of hard actually, which isn't how it's supposed to be. I ordered half-sweet and half-unsweet tea and really enjoyed the tea here. One oddity here is they have several sauces for your table but you choose a couple of them without tasting them. They bring them in a little cup rather than having all the sauces in bottles on the table. We got seated at our table when there was only one other table aside from us inside the restaurant, and they were already eating. After a several minutes, three other tables got sat in different areas all around us. All the other tables were greeted and got their drinks and food orders in before anyone even came to say hi. I think we were there 15-20 minutes before someone came to table, and this is after we tried twice to flag someone down. We were the only non-Caucasian table and I hate to think that is the reason, but it was our first time there and the entire service situation built up to that conclusion. Sure, it may have been an honest mistake somehow initially. But as the meal continued, nobody came to check on us after the food came, we needed to flag someone down for a drink refill, and for our check. Service was awful. I would've walked out before ordering had we not had a guest from out of town that really wanted to try this place. Food was okay, not great not bad. We got the sampler platter so we could try everything. The food came out luke warm, and nothing really stood out as amazing. The pulled chicken was surprisingly moist and probably the most enjoyable thing on the platter. The ribs were a little dry. The brisket, burnt ends, and pulled pork were all just fine. The beans were too sweet for my liking and the collard greens were forgettable. The onion rings came out hot and crispy, and the corn bread was decent. Three stars for the food itself. At $50 for the meats platter we felt it was a bit pricey for the portions. Our favorites were the Burnt ends, ribs, and pulled pork. The chicken and brisket were a bit dry. If we came back, we'd probably just get a platter with the meats we liked the most based on this visit. For sides we ordered coleslaw, collard greens, Mac and cheese, fries, and beans. We had to wave down two people until someone finally came by and told us that they had actually run out of the burnt ends and that they had automatically substituted the order with ONE slice of brisket. Sad. If they would've told us that they ran out beforehand, we would not have ordered this $42 dish. The chicken and pulled pork was dry. The pork ribs were small but the brisket was good. The side dishes outmatched the meat quality but overall one star because the customer service was lacking. We barely saw our waiter. Drinks took forever to come out and he didnt offer to refill our waters until after we paid the bill. Probably won't return. Really irritated that they didnt bother informing or asking us about our order given that adding burnt ends to an entree was $9 by itself. ONE slice of brisket is not worth $9. Was recommended by a bunch of friends from the area during our visit down to VA so was very excited to get our hands on some BBQ. Unfortunately it was just okay and nothing to rave about. Things we ordered - - Old Bay Wings - loved that they were grilled but didn't taste any seasoning. Just plain grilled/smoked chicken wings - Loaded fries- anything loaded should be yummy. - Ribs - dry and had no flavor. I'm not a sauce person but I definitely had to full on use the bbq sauces they provided - Brisket - extremely dry, would not recommend - Sides of beans, collards, apples, and onion rings were fine. Visited here for the first time after a walk with friends. I enjoyed their pulled pork and tried a couple appetizers. We asked if they were okay were groups. Fast forward to my birthday in February. Mookies is just ok. My friend had raves about this place and even had it for her pandemic wedding ceremony. It's close to my parents' home so it will do in a pinch but I find most of their meats to be kind of dry and bland in flavor and their sauces are not memorable. I've tried their brisket, roast chicken, and pulled chicken. The best thing on the menu was definitely the baked beans.
