S T I L L our Top Restaurant We started dining at PassionFish Reston circa 2012. Over the years we dined there hundreds of times. In fact we have 18,000 loyalty points. We had not been to PassionFish Reston since December 2020 because we moved to a southern state. We finally visited our family and friends in the DMV and celebrated two fabulous dinners and one happy hour after a six-year hiatus. Well PassionFish was still top shelf, sterling caliber with Chef Chris Clime as the new owner. Thank goodness because after a long gap in enjoying the restaurant, staff, and delicious seafood cuisine - it still is the best. We had two mouth watering dinner with family and friends while visiting town. We enjoyed the always terrific Blackened Swordfish, Halibut, and the most spectacular Whole Crispy Rockfish entree. Our deserts were the Key Lime Pie with Pineapple Sorbet and the Chocolate Dome with Cotton Candy volcano eruption - SUPERB all were. It was so wonderful to see staff members whom we remembered still working the the restaurant. Damien Beard, the manager, was equally as welcoming to see us again after six-years. A perennial favorite in our dining rotation, PassionFish at Reston Town Center once again delivered a memorable seafood feast. Despite a packed Father's Day crowd, the kitchen never missed a beat. The Crab & Corn Chowder was beautifully presented--rich, velvety, and generously loaded with sweet crab meat. The oysters from Maine and Rhode Island were the evening's surprise stars. As someone who typically favors the briny, ocean-forward oysters of the Pacific Northwest, I was impressed by the depth of flavor and refreshing salinity these East Coast selections offered. The grilled Arctic char was cooked with precision, its fattier flesh remaining moist, flaky, and remarkably delicate. Equally impressive were the sautéed soft-shell crabs--fresh, aromatic, and expertly prepared. Paired with the silky Lemon Beurre Blanc, they were outstanding and easily among the finest soft-shell crabs I've enjoyed in town this season. Passion Fish was decent. The brussel sprouts, blackened mahi mahi and bread pudding were all good. The spiced tandoori salmon was not authentic enough. The flavors did not live up to the taste of indian food. It needed more spices and the rice and black lentils aka daal underneath was bland as was the green chutney. It was toned down to be less bold, less flavorful and not as spicy which doesn't do justice to indian food and what its know for. The only thing about the dish that was good was the was it was plated with a papad sticking up off the plate. Overall the experience was ok. We went for lunch and the other food we ordered was decent. I wouldn't say anything there was extraordinary or very unique. The interior was nice and most of the staff were friendly. read more

I came back here after more than a year of hiatus and was pleasantly surprised to find that the food quality is still excellent as before. Also, the service is very good and at least this time the place did not get very loud so that it was easy enough to carry on a conversation with the group that I was there with. I said I would be going back to this amazing restaurant and I did 2 1/2 weeks later. It was even better this time I started off my meal with a white cosmopolitan which was made to perfection. Then once I got to my table, the complementary cinnamon donut bread with creamy spread was to die for. Of course you know I had to get charbroiled oysters once again and they were amazing. I also got the shrimp spring rolls and they came with a spicy sauce. that had just the right amount of kick. A first time customer to this restaurant in Reston and kind of disappointed with the service. Felt pretty biased by the female server who served our table. We realized we were pretty casually dressed and weren't there to eat a whole lot of food. So, we simply got the Passion Fish Roll (Raw Sushi BTW), a Crispy Buttermilk Fried Calamari, a Rockfish, a side of Sweet Potato Fries and Mac & Cheese. For our drinks, got a couple of Rum & Cokes and a Shirley Temple. The ambiance was pleasant for the most part, as we enjoyed the conversations and the food when each of the plates came out. Just that the service was kind of bias and rude. We could all feel that the waitress was kind of in a bad mood, maybe expecting us to order more dishes and drinks. Anyhow, we noticed the portions were kind of on the smaller side compared to the prices. But taste-wise, everything was pretty good. The Rum and Cokes were fine, a little pricey, but decent. Another thing we observed was that the server never asked us if we wanted more refills or dessert. After she saw that we were done with our food, she simply put the check on the table and that was that. We were full, but we still wanted more bread and drinks, so not sure why she felt like we were going to leave and ready to pay when we didn't even ask for the check, yet. I really liked their attention to detail. when I made the reservation the day before I had added that we would be celebrating a anniversary and when we sat down, the menus were personalized with a happy anniversary on them, which I thought was very nice of them. I ordered the brunch that cost $35 and I thought that was a great price for an appetizer, entree and dessert. I ordered the banana foster pancakes, and I really liked the syrup that they added alongside the rest of the plate. I also ordered the blue crab hash and that was pretty good as well not pictured is the chocolate mousse bomb for dessert and I thoroughly enjoyed that dessert the mousse was made very well and I wish I had ordered another one. read more

Came in here for dinner while I was in town for a cybersecurity conference. Walked in about 6pm on a Sunday, and we were seated very quickly. I had my service dog with me and the host at the door was very polite about asking me the questions they are allowed to ask, and didn't make a big deal of it. The restaurant itself was very contemporary and intimate, low lighting, well decorated, and I like how they have an ice island in the middle with some of their fresh seafood displayed. Now, on to the part that matters, the food. Passionfish Flys their seafood in fresh daily and it's incredible quality. I got the Toro tuna sashimi appetizer and the fish almost literally melted in my mouth it was so tender. For my main course I got their sushi tower, and all of the fish on it was also divine. I used to enjoy their Bethesda location until it closed. It was a solid place. Came here with friends after a fiasco at another restaurant. Love the decor and layout. Fresh fish on display adds to the ambience. We all went light on the food. Char broiled oysters, gumbo, and calamari. All were so so. Gumbo lacked salt and any strong flavor. My friend who cooks said the rue wasn't right. Comments about the calamari were mmmm ok. Likewise for the oysters, bit they were pretty. I think everything needed more seasoning. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Northern Virginia. The menu is extensive as is the wine list and the service is excellent. We had a 4-course meal for a special occasion which included the caviar service, charbroiled oyster appetizer, surf and turf special, Tandoori salmon and finished with a key lime tart and coconut sorbet! Everything was done to perfection. Our server was really personable and kind with suggestions that were spot on. Today was officially the last time I will dine at Passionfish. The last few times I've gone the food was subpar. Fish does not taste fresh. Sweet potato fries were soggy. Crab and corn chowder literally had no crab in it. It's ridiculous. Today we had sushi and I literally had to spit it out in my napkin as it tasted really fishy. The sandwiches we had were very subpar. Who puts cheese on salmon? This isn't Florida. The crab cake sandwich was paper thin yet they charge more than Jackson's. No wonder the restaurant is pretty dead every time I go. The patio should be packed on a day like today and there were only 3 tables occupied. The service was not great either, as always on the patio. So disappointed, this used to be one of my favorites. I was generous with 2 stars. read more

The oyster shooters were generously portioned and delicious. Clams also had a nice flavor, just wish it came with more bread for dipping. Beautifully arranged but packed dining room. Our table could have not have been the best and preferable by the window, and, in which I had vantage (240) point of the dining room. As I looked around the room, it was full of business suits and dinner attire guests give off yuppy vibe. And the staff all seemed professional working in symphonic harmony. I could tell there was this nicely suited gentleman who I presumed was the dining room manager or the very manager but he did not acknowledged us being the first guests that checked in at start of dinner time. Also reminded me of the lukewarm reception at the bar when we had a drink prior to dinner. Yet, I like the resto vibe! Food was great and more than good and equated with the pricing. Still, all in all a solid 4! My friend and I came here for a birthday dinner and had a great experience! Our waiter was extremely friendly and service was great. The ambiance inside is very nice- elegant & modern. The subtle blue lighting makes it feel very oceany lol We ordered the harissa Spanish glazed octopus as an appetizer which was delicious. The octopus was very well cooked and tender. I was surprised how well the octopus and hummus worked together. I would definitely get this again. The Szechuan Eggplant and Szechuan long beans were both great side dishes. Flavorful, well cooked, and a very decent portion size. We got sushi as our entree which was great. Fish and all the ingredients were extremely fresh and the ratio of rice in the roll was perfect. Honestly, not a bad spot at all. My boyfriend and I decided to try this spontaneously. We didn't make a reservation but they had availability. We got seated right away. Today was 1st visit - we were immediately greeted by the hostess and were seated instantly. The server was attentive and courteous. I prefer expressing martini and my friend ordered a margarita. Both drinks were divine. We ordered crab Ruben sandwich and lobster roll. They were both delicious however I favor the crab Rueben sandwich. Corn chowder was the perfect amount of sweetness plus seafood hint, but for $12 I was hoping for a slightly bigger portion. Rainbow trout and Mac n jack came together as an entree, generous portion and was perfect amount to share between my fiancé and I. Plenty of seating but we came on a Saturday and even though Google says they open at 4, we had to wait until 5 to get seated at the dining area. My wife and I recently enjoyed a lovely brunch at PassionFish in Reston during restaurant week. Not only was the atmosphere perfect on a Sunday morning, but the service was impeccable. I had sushi as my appetizer and my wife enjoyed the gazpacho. Both were delicious and fresh. We both selected eggs Benedict as our appetizer. It was also delicious, although it was listed as having bay seasoning included in the sauce. Neither of us tasted it, although the sauce was wonderful without it. For dessert, my wife had the chocolate dome and I enjoyed the bread pudding. Both were out of this world! While PassionFish is known for their fresh seafood, don't take a pass on brunch. Unfortunately, PassionFish has become grossly overpriced for what it delivers. What was once one of the best restaurants, and hands down the best happy hour in Reston Town Center has gone steadily downhill over the last year or two. I recently visited for a jazz brunch, and honestly, the only bright spot was the live jazz itself. The food was mediocre at best. The shrimp and grits were disappointing, barely any grits, drowned in an overly salty sauce. The sushi portions were shockingly small for the price. To make matters worse, multiple drinks ordered for the table were either incorrect or poorly prepared. Their happy hour, which used to be a major draw, has gone from the best in RTC to arguably the worst and most expensive. The value simply isn't there anymore. It's a real shame, because this restaurant used to be a go-to with consistently solid food and a great atmosphere. Sadly, based on recent experiences, I don't see this restaurant surviving if things continue in this direction. We now have better happy hours in RTC such as Maker's Union and a new sushi restaurant (Kusshi) which offers a really nice happy hour and menu all around. read more

Amazing seafood period! Went with a friend while staying in DC. The restaurant is very modern with a side bar and loved seeing the fresh oysters shucked in the front area. We happened to be there with an awesome special half off fresh oysters in two different varieties-one smaller with great flavor and one a little larger with a salty taste. The fresh horseradish was appreciated! Great recommendation from our server. We then ordered - I was wrestling between the sole stuffed with lobster and vegetables and drizzled with an amazing lemon sauce. My friend ordered the large scallops and I went with the server recommended blackened swordfish. When you see the pictures you will be shocked at the size of the swordfish steak! Perfectly cooked and amazing taste.... Our sides were the Szechuan eggplant and the bucket of fries! I would definitely come again! Been wanting to try this for a long time. Three of us had dinner here early eve during the week. We had a table in the corner which was conducive to talking. I very much appreciated that. We started with the octopus which is in the menu and the spider sushi roll which was a special. Both were great. I got the tuna special and liked it a lot. I was surprised how generous the portion was. One person got the crab cakes and mushrooms- again lots of mushrooms. Another got the scallops and loved them. Services was great! Came here with a friend to catch the tail end of PassionFish happy hour. They have an island area as an extension of the bar area which was convenient for us because all the bar seats were full. I thought the bar service was great. They have multiple cross-trained bartenders and servers overseeing that area so there was never a wait to call someone over to order more drinks or apps. Speaking of ordering, I loved their menu. Plenty of $9 appetizers and $6 specialty drinks. Between my friend and I we ordered the oyster shooters, the mussels, the spicy salmon maki roll, the moscow mule and the dark and stormy cocktail. I don't think you'll go wrong with ordering any of those. Tip about the oyster shooters: one serving comes with 3 shots! Know this before you decide how much you want to order haha. read more

A bit on the pricier end, but I do love coming here, especially for Restaurant Week. My favorite thing to order is the crispy whole flounder. It comes with a tangy Thai sauce/glaze that really balances the fried fish. The ambience is upscale and service is decent. I'd recommend coming here for a special occasion or date night. read more

Went for Valentine's day, food was 10/10 SO good. Service was a bit spotty but they were also packed. The food runners didn't seem to know what tables were what because two of our 4 dishes were delivered to a different table (one near by where we could see). Our server was very knowledgable of the menu as well! Only odd thing was we wanted to see if we could get in a little earlier and they told us they couldn't take us before our 7:45 reservation time so we waited there for an hour and saw empty tables. He was upbeat from the moment he greeted us, incredibly kind, and very knowledgeable about the menu. You could tell he genuinely cared about making sure we had a great evening. His recommendations were spot on and his energy set the tone for the entire dinner. We never felt rushed and he checked in at all the right moments (attentive without hovering). He honestly elevated the entire experience. The drinks were also fantastic, and we loved the bartender Jackson. And of course, the food was incredible. I came here for restaurant week with my parents, and was generally satisfied with the food, but wouldn't return for traditional menu. The wait to get seated was quite long, but understandable due to the volume I saw in the lobby. Our waiter didn't improve our experience much, and it was clear other waiters had more attentive service. Appetizer- Crudo spoons: whitefin tuna with __ while tasty, not worth it in comparison to other appetizers such as the ceviche. Main Course- Catch of the day (salmon): I got the salmon with romesco sauce and a side of cremini mushrooms. The salmon skin was crispy, and overall dish flavor was standard.
