I had been relying on my Landscaper to purchase my plants for my properties. Not getting exactly what I wanted from relying on my Landscaper to purchase plants for me, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I often drive by the Moon Valley location on Sherman Way, and finally stopped in as I needed some plants. Actually, I needed quite a few plants. I met with Mike Freeland and he showed me some options. I consulted with my Landscaper and we decided on 239 Boxwoods and 60 succulents. I made my purchase totaling $3,584.47. Mike didn't have all the plants, thus I had to wait. I had an emergency at one of my properties a couple days after my purchase, and I called Mike to cancel the order for the time being. Mike said that I would be charged a cancellation fee. I discussed with him that the plants hadn't been moved, or delivered, so I would appreciate it if we could hold off on the order. Mike pointed me to the terms and conditions on the back of the receipt. I read the terms and conditions and thought, OK, those are the terms. I let the order ride. However, the terms of the sale should be clearly explained when you are making your purchase. I am not quite sure if Moon Valley has not spent any money or effort moving, loading, or planting a plant...why a client shouldn't be able to get a refund. That's OK, I thought, I know the terms for next time. So we moved forward, and that's where things fell apart...and for me, there will not be a next time with Moon Valley. The events are as follows: My Landscaper picked up the Boxwoods. Mike had told me that the succulents that were ordered at the same time were to be delivered at a later date. I said, OK. Without going into a long detailed recanting of every detail...I made my purchase on 9/16/2016. From approximately two weeks after the purchase, and pickup of my Boxwoods...I called Mike for 3 MONTHS trying to get my succulents! Let me repeat that...3 MONTHS OF THE CUSTOMER CALLING THE COMPANY TO GET MY PLANTS!! Every point of contact with Mike was met with a machine gun delivered response. Basically, I couldn't get a straight answer, and every promise to do something was met with no follow through on Mike's end. To be fair, Mike might have called me back one time. Finally at the end of December, I had had it. I called Mike and expressed my discomfort, and told him we needed to wrap this up. He said that he couldn't get the succulents, then told me he was going to call someone as a last ditch effort. At the same time, I was planning another project with my Landscaper. He asked me if I wanted him to get the 75 plants we needed from his supplier? I told him to hold off as I thought...maybe Mike was going to pull it off, and that something could be salvaged from my poor experience to date with Mike, and that we could move forward with future projects. Well, I received a call from Mike a few days later and he informed me the succulents had arrived. AWESOME! So I called my Landscaper and told him to go to Moon Valley and get the 75 plants there. Until... Later that same day, I received another call from Mike telling me that the succulents he had were not 1 gallon, which is what I ordered. Rather they were 3 gallon. Well, I thought before he said the next thing...That's your problem. Mike then said to me, I'm going to have to charge you $6.00 more per plant. I said, I want a refund. Mike swiftly acquiesced to my my request, and gave me the refund. I want to pause a moment and look back to the beginning of this harrowing tale. When nothing had been done, not a finger lifted, except to swipe my credit card, and print my receipt, I couldn't get a refund. Now, plants have transported, energy has been exerted, money spent, and now I can get a refund without a problem. Pretty convenient, and seemingly a bit perplexing on the logic there. I understand it's more based on Mike not being able to come through...but again... pretty convenient. Well, as we come to a close here...I immediately called my Landscaper and told him to go to his supplier and get the 75 plants. My business with Moon Valley was concluded at that very moment. In conclusion, I am sure there are great people within Moon Valley's organization. Personally, I am sure Mike is a great guy. He did not strike me as otherwise. However, from a business standpoint...not so great on my transaction. I am a business owner. I own apartment buildings and single family rentals. In total I have approximately 30,000 sq. feet of green space. Green space that is always being maintained, changed, upgraded. The source of my plants, will not be coming from Moon Valley Nurseries. I'd call that an...OOPS! The way I conduct my business...every dollar counts. No client is ever ignored. That's the way I do business, and I don't do business with companies that do not share my same ideologies. As I know, in no uncertain terms...that is the right way to do business. read more

I am amazed that this company is still in business, and I'm wondering how there are so many positive reviews....over priced, and terrible, terrible customer service. Wish we would have checked out other nurseries. We had one tree at our house that had such an invasive root system that spread from one end of our yard to the front. We spent a ton of money ripping it out and fixing the damage it caused. Needless to say, our number one requirement was to have plants that were not going to overtake our yard. So, we met with one of the sales people, and guess what he sold us? Ficus trees and hedges. If you don't know anything about the ficus (which we didn't) they are the MOST aggressive root system, and I'm pretty sure they are now illegal in the city of Los Angeles to plant...because they have torn up the sidewalks, fallen on cars... We had a friend come over after they were planted and mentioned this to us- why in the world would you plant TWO ficus trees in your backyard? We also had some concrete recently poured, and they installed 7 ficus hedges right next to it (more on this later). So, we called some other nurseries and a landscape architect and all told us that it was a horrible idea to have those plants. Not one professional that we spoke to recommended to keep them, and all sternly advised on getting rid of them. We call moon valley, and tell them what we've learned about the trees, and tell them we are really upset! As they knew when we purchased these, our NUMBER ONE requirement. It was really the only requirement. So after months of back and forth, well because MV will NEVER return your phone call after they trick you into buying something you don't want, they finally switched out the trees to something that wouldn't destroy ours and our neighbors houses. So great, we finally have the ficus trees out of our yard. But wait! Apparently, ficus hedges are just less mature ficus trees! So, we still had SEVEN ficus trees all along the side of our new concrete. Please tell me, WHY when we complain about the ficus, do you not tell us that the hedges are the same as the trees. So now, and this is almost two years later...one horrible, expensive nightmare...we are fighting to get the hedges out. ALL WE WANTED WERE NON-AGGRESSIVE PLANTS. And all they sold us, were. They finally remove the hedges and replace them with something non aggressive. But as a last minute parting gift- they DESTROY our few thousand dollar drop system. They send someone back out to fix it, but he of course doesn't have the right parts. We then had to pay the drip people to come back out and repair it. ($120) The moral of the story is this- MV is basically a used car parking lot, in terms of their business mentality. They easily could have swapped out the plants in the beginning, apologized (never received one), and I would have written a rave review on how a mistake was made and a company rectified it. Instead, this whole process has taken forever to resolve, we had to beg and call constantly for any action to be made, and in the end ... have to write this kind of review. read more

Several Years Later, Still No Olive Tree Growth and No Accountability I don't write negative reviews lightly, but after a year of false promises and being ignored, I feel it's important to share my experience. I purchased an expensive olive tree from Moon Valley Nursery with high hopes. I was assured, multiple times, that once the roots settled into the ground, I'd see a healthy flush of new growth. They made it sound like a sure thing, and given the price tag, I expected both the product and the service to reflect that confidence. Fast forward a year: the tree has been in the ground with proper care, yet there has been zero new growth. Not even a hint. When I reached out, they eventually sent someone to inspect it. Their solution? A "protein shot" to the root and the vague promise to revisit the situation in 2 to 3 months. That was months ago. Since then, complete silence. No follow-up, no updates, and certainly no resolution. I've reached out again, only to be ignored entirely. It's extremely disheartening, not just the fact that I was sold a tree that has shown no signs of life, but that the nursery has shown no integrity in standing behind what they sold me. This experience feels like a bait-and-switch. They were attentive and persuasive when it came time to sell me the tree, but the moment there was a problem, they slowly disappeared. It's been an expensive and frustrating lesson in how not all businesses value customer trust or accountability. If you're considering purchasing from this nursery, I strongly urge you to be cautious, especially with big-ticket items like trees. Recently we purchased a new tree for our back yard from Moon Valley Nursery in Hollywood and we are very pleased with the product and customer service we received. Sennin did a great job with helping us select the tree that would be suitable for our yard. He was patient, friendly, and very knowledgeable. After showing us many trees we decided to get an avocado tree and Sennin helped us select a beautiful specimen. Gene with his crew came to install the tree. They were very efficient, planted the tree just as we wanted and left the yard spotless. We truly appreciated all the info that Gene gave us on tree care and its fertilization. The gentleman that assisted me Dan Kaplan was immediately attentive, greeting me when I first arrived and offering assistance with anything I needed. Dan then proceeded to answer all of my questions regarding buying in bulk, which plants would fit my environment, and offering to check whether those I items I needed could be ordered and delivered to my client. Dan was also able to help me with questions about caring for and setting the plants. Not once did I feel a lack of care or attention regarding my clients needs. All the other associates were quite welcoming and friendly as well. I could not recommend this place more for all your large foliage and orchard needs. I had visited a few nurseries during my research planting fruit and nut trees in my property. The grounds at Moon Valley were much better than most nurseries I had visited. All plants, trees were well maintained. The experience and sale was definitely solidified after speaking with Carter. I think his last name is Bacon; Carter Bacon was very knowledgeable, patient and very helpful. We selected several and scheduled pickup the next day. All went perfect. I've ordered other varieties from Carter that will arrive shortly. He and this nursery is my go-to as I continue adding varieties. I am thankful for the professionalism and equal excitement he had for my endeavor. We purchased a giant, multi-trunk Jacaranda tree from the North Hollywood location. Mike was helpful as we discussed our style and preferences after which he drove us around to show us some options. The delivery was on schedule. The driver, Gene, called ahead to advise us that they would be arriving within 10 minutes. We appreciated the call. The tree arrived wrapped in a tarp. That shows me they care. Gene's crew was courteous, respectful of our property and other landscape as they thoughtfully transferred the tree from the delivery truck over and past obstacles to its planted location. All work was completed with care and efficiency. Written instructions for watering and fertilization were provided by Gene. We were very pleased with the installation. read more
