I reached out to this business to inquire about sod installation in my backyard. Jose was prompt to respond and came out within the week to survey my backyard and discuss my project. He was able to provide me an estimate within 20 minutes and was very thorough in his explanation of work and suggestions of what type of sod to use. My yard is lacking of sun exposure so it has been tricky keeping grass healthy and lush. Started good. Ended with Jose and his crew leaving the job incomplete, with broken sprinklers heads, Construction debris on site, a 25 foot open trench, and mud everywhere. Hired Jose for a large scale front and back landscaping job. Remove grass, Plant 25 trees, terrace the hillside, small block retaining walls, grading, etc. A very involved Job in excess of 30k. In short, Jose's issue appeared to be, I was not paying him moment I got his text with costs of the day. (First off, wasn't aware we would be adopting daily payments, for a job that was going to last weeks) Either way, He was paid for three days worth of work within one day of the work. FYI. No contract, or invoice, scope of work, no terms, no paper work, just short texts. No request for materials deposit. In hindsight, this is exactly why many people are smart not to pay until the job is completed. (Naturally with a deposit) That way you don't get taken advantage of halfway through a project. Oddly enough, the problem started immediately after I brought up an issue that I was getting charged full day rates by everyone on his team despite the fact they would arrive between 8 - 9am and leave around 4-5.. and take up to an hour lunch. Jose and his partner would disappear off site for hours.. to pick up irrigation supplies. Home Depot was 7min away. I'm under the assumption labor rates reflect an 8hr day, deduction of 30-60min lunch. I was clear that I din't mind paying a full rate for a day of work. I never asked for a deal or any discounts. I just thought since we already doubled the estimate of the second phase, just two days in, maybe we could pay a little more attention to costs and ultimately productivity. Next day he was gone. I tried to talk it through politely and professionally, saying that no terms had ever been discussed, but I'd be happy to work within his needs, but he still chose to abandon the job unfinished. It's unfortunate you can't post pictures. He really left us hanging and our property a mess. He's seems like nice guy, and I'm certain he's capable of good work and his prices were fair. He's previous review looked great so it's a definitely confusing. I would just encourage potential home owners to have a contract or scope of work in place, payment terms or expectation laid out in advance, and don't question his crews productivity! Ultimately, not a big deal, he can chose to work with whomever he likes. However my Wife and incredibly disappointed in the way he left the job and work site. That was most definitely unprofessional and for that reason alone, I would be weary of anyone hiring him because should there be an issue, you will be left hanging. ********************************* In Response to Jose. Photos attached - As stated - mud, debris and broken sprinkler heads that were left behind. Told Jose the scope of work from the beginning and we had anticipated hitting 30k easily.. If he had done a complete scope of work and costs, that would have been clearly evident. We just told him we wanted to go in phases. Not new Information but not a big deal either. Also, attached a photo of a text. selecting a Hedge, which sent, which he was supposed to start planting today, along with the half of the privacy headge we picked out.. together. His entire response if fiction. Was never rude to his team. Almost never spoke to the crew, actually had a few laughs on more than one occasion. Actually picked up a shovel to help one of the guys did around the water main for 30min. All conversations were always directed to Jose unless asked a question and honestly it was completely fine until he decided to quit. Me questioning his crew's productivity seems to be what lit the fire. I only mentioned leaving a bad review after he quit and and he made it clear he had no intention on cleaning up. The mess remaining is from the job that he just confirmed he completed in his response, which was paid for, the drainage. That is the clearest example of his work ethic. He states he finished that job yet there's a pile of drainage tubes and irrigation pipe left behind. At the very least, cut up the pipe and place our trash bins. This is very clear image of what his finished job looks like. Regarding payment... Jose was paid at every stage, in full in a timely manner. There were no games or disrespect. Payment came through a business account, via accounting, and took extra work to push through with no invoices, paper work of any kind or W9. When I mention the drainage ended up costing twice the price, as his quote, I merely mentioned I want to pay attention to budget and productivity knowing we had weeks more of work to get through. This has already been too much energy. We'v been renovating our home for the last 6 months. Dozen of contractors in and out. Not one complaint.. not one post. read more
