Reading the other reviews, I realize how lucky I was not to wait in line. Timing is everything! Speaking of timing, do your homework on Yelp before going. This is an evening donut shop...that's a new one for me. So no worries about beating the morning rush with all those peeps on their way to work bribing all their coworkers with sugary yummiest. I originally headed out early in the day for a good selection, to realize they open at 4 PM! I have so many decisions to make this morning...cherry, blueberry, maple, chocolate or so many others. I had read about their hot lemon, but sadly no lemon on the evening I went. They said to follow them on Facebook, and about an hour before opening they post the daily specials. I will be watching for lemon...in any of the forms they told me they have them. Think lemon cheesecake...can you tell lemon is my favorite? There was a hot orange being offered, but I noticed that as I was checking out. Next time I'll check that first. What could be better than a warm donut??? I shoved a Cherry Cordial in my mouth the moment I got in the car. It was heaven in a bite. And the women in the shop were so friendly and helpful. It has a small town feel in a beautiful section of Covington I hadn't been to before. (I am new to this area, having moved here recently) I will be following them on Facebook and the next time they feature lemon, I will be heading over here. If they can do this with the flavors I mentioned above, just think what they can do with lemon. My mouth waters just thinking about it. Head on over and see if you can score you're fave flavor here. You'll be glad you did.
Moonrise Donuts is an ode to the nostalgia of Latonia. They are open the reverse of most bakeries, as they start service in the evening! Thats my kind of place! Id rather get somewhere at 4 or 5pm to snag the better haul than at the crack of dawn! I was lucky on the Wednesday I came that there was no line but often there is. There is plenty of parking in a public lot that is just past the bakery. There are several tables inside the space, as well as a picnic table outside. If you look on the website there is a huge list of all the donuts they have created at one time or another. Each day only a handful of fresh flavors are made and they rotate. They also feature a hot donut special of the day! On this day, it was blueberry! I snagged a dozen including plain glazed, blueberry, carrot cake, maple, and chocolate frosted. The staff was kind and efficient taking my order! My favorite donut surprisingly was the plain glazed. While all the flavors were delicious, their plain just blew away any other place I've been to, even next day! I also was pleasantly surprised by the maple. I love maple but usually the donut version is kind of overly sweet and fakey. Their version tasted like real maple syrup and I'm here for it! The cake donuts were fluffy and the yeast donuts were the perfect density. None of the donuts tasted fried or greasy! I cannot wait to come back and check out more of their unique flavor creations!
Received 6 hot birthday cakes donuts about an hour ago this is the size. Bite size at most. For the price is absolutely insane. Doesn't have much flavor at all taste is definitely off. I don't recommend this place if it's going to portion like this. Definitely enjoyed the previous owners and recipes. This is the first time in 2 years we ate here for a snack. Will most likely not go back.

Though selections may be a bit limited, available flavors were TASTY! I ordered 2 hot doughnuts with my box of doughnuts as I was curious how they'd be. They did not disappoint -- not too sweet! Most definitely delicious when they're made fresh. Customer service was pretty quick and staff were friendly. Highly recommend this spot!
Three words. Hot. Fresh. Donuts. I could be done there but I would be remiss if I didn't say that moonrise has excellent case donuts too. But truly the hot fresh donuts of the night are always incredible. It doesn't matter what flavor it is, There's some thing about a freshly glazed right out of the fryer doughnut that always hits the spot.
Fresh, thick, soft and fluffy... everything you want in a donut. There's cake and yeast, traditional and specialty, and even a hot option of the day. Only complaint is there's no hot drinks like coffee or tea. Be mindful of the hours, Yelp hours differ from the hours posted on the storefront - this is an evening business, not a morning one. Great for an after dinner sweet treat. It's quite a drive to this location for me, but if I'm in the area again I will be back!
As I follow my GPS, the closer I get to Moonrise I see a line. I'm thinking this can't be the place. Before this YELP event I had never heard of the little shop. Well yes, it was the place. People line up to wait for these tasty doughnuts. I knew I was going to upgrade to a dozen vs the allowed 1/2 dozen. The varieties change. They had several Harry Potter themed doughnuts this day . I did buy one of those, it is a lemon doughnut. They have so many to choose from. Mounds, as in the candy bar doughnut, strawberry funnel cake, blueberry, blueberry lemonade, old fashioned glazed, regular glazed and on and on. I tried the blue berry cake when I got home. Now I understand the line.
Omg how didn't I know about this gem located in Latonia. They offer a hot doughnut every night a different flavor and it a popular order. The night we were there was funfetti. The place was hopping. I took home a toffee donut that was so delicious I am still thinking about it. Better than a toffee candy bar. The staff are fun and make you smile.
Absolutely delicious doughnuts! I'm always so excited about Yelp Elite events bc it gives me a chance to visit a business I've never been to before, like Moonrise! They serve a hot doughnut each week. The week i went it was a pumpkin doughnut with glaze. It was so delicious! I barely made it out the parking lot, and I didn't get a picture of it. I also bought a few more, bc the hubs needed to taste this deliciousness!
My gluten-free donut go-to! Tuesdays only though. Go early for the best chance at getting some. It's exciting to have options.

A cute and classic doughnut bakery but with a twist - they are only open from late afternoon into the evening (or as long as the doughnuts last). We tried one of each of the seasonal cake doughnut flavors and the couple I've had so far have been great! You can get warm or room temp treats and tho the place smelled amazing and I REALLY wanted a bunch of the warm ones - I knew they would never make it home!
When my sister asked if I wanted to go with her to get some doughnuts at 7 p.m. at night, I was a bit confused. But now I get it! Moonrise Doughnuts opens at night -- hence the name -- and sells its delicious doughnuts until they sell out. On the night I visited, they only had the special of blueberry doughnuts and orange donut holes left. I can't wait to try more of their sweet treats, but these were more than enough to satisfy a craving for morning pastries at night. These were also delicious the next morning, so if you want doughnuts for the morning, cross that to-do list off your list and pick these up the night before. I will be back on a future trip to see my family in Northern Kentucky. A new tradition? I hope so! read more

Awesome donuts and I love that they are open late! I'm not always a morning person and sometimes on the weekend I just don't want to eat for a few hours after I wake up. I did like they offered gluten free though only on tuesdays I think they said. They did offer fresh hot donuts though I declined since I wasn't really sure what donuts those would be and I was still browsing. read more

Update. It's been a minute, but we went back. They're being super safe during Covid and I appreciate that. This time we bought 2 berries and cream, a maple bacon, cookies and cream, wow butter (?) and apple crisp. All super delicious and what I didn't realize before is how inexpensive they are! You're paying less than Dunkin prices for premium donuts! I think we paid $8 for these 6 amazing donuts. My only regret is that we didn't try the hot donuts and they appear to be the star. I also love the ease of parking at this location. I'd give them more stars if I could read more

Freakingggg DELICIOUS! I already can't wait to come back for more donuts. The vanilla icing with rainbow sprinkles were my favorite! Cinnamon sugar also is so delicious. I like that they are open later for that evening sweet tooth! Definitely pay them a visit. :) read more
First off this isn't your traditional AM doughnut place. Just as the name implies - it's open in the evening hours. The day we went the hours were 5 - 10 PM. Secondly if you want a hot-off-the-line doughnut you can order the flavor of the day. We ordered the flavor of the day - Funfetti- and after a short wait were presented with hot fresh doughnuts that had that melt in your mouth goodness. Truly a sweet indulgence! Of course there are other doughnut varieties available, that are ready made, and maybe, we had to get a few of those to take home also. read more

This is a great little discovery that I didn't even know existed! A place where you can get freshly made donuts in the middle of the day! What a concepts, donuts aren't only for mornings. The drive out there was made worth it being a part of the Yelp event to introduce is to this little gem. The donuts are delicious, the staff was very friendly and helpful, and people seem to love them cause they were already running out of supplies when we got there! A great place to check out if your feening for some donuts after lunch or dinner! read more

Went to moonrise with the intention of getting 6-but when I saw all the options I ended up going with the dozen plus a few extra! I arrived at 5 on the dot on Friday, and a line quickly formed. I like the idea of a donut shop opening up later for those late night sweet cravings. Recommend getting there early if there are specific flavors you want to try-they have some pretty unique options! All of the donuts were delicious, but I especially liked the hot cake donuts. They were easily the favorite among our group. read more
Best donuts anywhere by far! Stopped in one minute before closing on Saturday night. Ordered 6 hot, and 6 assorted. Since they were closing they offered us another dozen and a half to take since they would need to pitch what was left over. The staff was super friendly, and we really appreciated their generosity. Oh my gosh... where do I begin? I HAD to buy the extra half dozen to be able to sample all of their offerings. So far, the maple glazed is absolutely outrageous. The glaze is perfectly sweet. The raspberry glazed was my second favorite with the blueberry cake donut being my 3rd.... And I still have several more to sample! Staff was great, and service was expedient! Moonrise has been on my list to try for a while, and it did not disappoint! Despite there being a long line, we were still in and out in less than five minutes and their prices were more than fair. The vanilla yeast donuts are out of this world. The icing is almost custard-like in its creaminess! read more

I'm still in shock. These are literally the best doughnuts I've ever tasted in my life & I'm a doughnut snob. It's one of the things I search for in any city I travel to. These doughnuts were catered by our church Crossroads Florence last weekend. We tried maple, cinnamon sugar, glazed & white iced. All of them were incredible. These were the fluffiest, tastiest, most amazing doughnuts. I can't stop thinking about them. I am going to their bakery ASAP & I will probably only buy doughnuts from here from now on if I can help it. I love that their hours are in the evening too. Not typical for a bakery. Unlike every other donut place on Earth, this place offers up fresh donuts middle of the day. For those late morning folks like me (I can never get out of bed), you can now enjoy fresh delightful donuts when you get off work. Smash those afternoon cravings with a donut from Moonrise and you won't be sorry. It's an interesting concept aimed at capturing a fresh demographic - the afternoon donut snacker. There was not a huge selection of donuts, but that's okay, because sometimes you don't want 15 types of donuts. Let's be honest, most people stick to 1 or 2 standard faves. Plus, at Moonrise Donuts, what you are served across the board is PERFECTION. I consider myself to be a bit of a donut snob. I've been known to toss out a donut I didn't enjoy (yes, I have even given a donut place a 1 star review because they tasted awful). But these confections offered up fresh in the late afternoon from Moonrise are simply delish. The yeast donuts are light, fluffy, soft, and have just the right amount of topping (chocolate frosted in my case). I was just going to go with a half dozen but once I saw how fresh and fluffy they were, I went for the dozen. So glad I did. So far, my favorite is the classic chocolate frosted yeast doughnut. But I gambled with a cinnamon sugar maple doughnut (more of a cake doughnut texture) and I'm so glad I did. It was outstanding. I also had a mocha yeast doughnut and while it was very tasty, I liked enjoyed the chocolate frosted more. This is kind of a fun area where it's at too. Grab dinner at one of the local restaurants and then stop in for dessert here at Moonrise! read more
