This O.G. donut shop has been making classics since the 80's. No frou-frou flavors on this rack. Cake donuts are on the left and yeast on the right. The baker-owner recommends the buttermilk. He said "it's like crack, you'll be back." I'm more of a yeast guy, but that buttermilk is real nice. The icing makes a slightly crunchy outer shell that seals in the soft cake inside. The glazed yeast is a pillowy golden delight. With every bite my stomach kept making room for the next. Cooked to perfection, you can tell this donut legend has mastered his craft. The shop has a vintage bar where you can sit down for a dunker, fresh hot coffee, and small talk with the old-timers. Don't bother ordering a frappe or anything than rhymes with "appuccino." They offered a Colombian and Highlander roast. I prefer mine fresh, hot, and black. Stick around long enough and you'll get to enjoy the friendly banter between the owner and his regulars. Everyone who came through tipped generously. You can tell they appreciate their local staple. Like every small business, the owner is working through some staffing challenges so call ahead and make sure they're open during the listed hours. You won't be disappointed. Such a cute little local donut shop! The owner makes them all early in the morning, and they open until they sell out. The woman at the counter happily walked me through all the options and customer favorites. Someone had previously recommended the basic powdered sugar donut to me though, so I went with that choice. I usually don't even like powdered sugar donuts, but I was blown away by this one. It had like a nice crisp shell almost, and then the cake inside was soft and fresh without being too dense. I love a good donut or 2, Silverton Donuts didn't disappoint! First time stopping in, too many choices to choose one so a dozen it is. The buttermilk donut was soft and sweet with a little crunch from the icing shell, the plain glazed was airy and soft, both in my opinion perfect donuts! These donuts are GOOD. We picked up some donuts on our drive to Gatlinburg and they were the perfect breakfast for a long drive - I honestly don't know when they wouldn't be a perfect breakfast! When I walked in I noticed a smaller selection than most donut shops - don't let that deter you! A couple donuts caught my eye - the Klunker (a big ball of cake donut), and the Honeymoon (essentially a yeast donut that has filling in the hole instead of being a filled donut). Even though I was so enticed by so many of the donuts, I chose the buttermilk donut. The buttermilk donut is Silverton Donut's Sour Cream Donut - my go to. The crew I was with purchased a half-dozen; the pricing is really good - $6 for 6 (AMAZING) donuts! Our selection was a buttermilk donut (honestly, the best sour cream type donut I have had in years! Just enough cakey-ness without being too dense; don't even get me started on how great the flavor was. This donut could contend for what I would chose for my last meal!), a Klunker, Honeymoon (which I was told was great because it had more filling than the Bavarian Creme!), a Bavarian Creme, Honey Stick, and the Cinnamon Apple Filled (which I was told tasted like an apple pie!). Everyone was so thrilled with their choices; all I can say is I will be back to try more AND get plenty of the Buttermilk Donuts (we will see if I share!). Just be sure to GET THERE EARLY! Popped in around 1030 on a Saturday, selection was a little sparse due to us showing up late morning. The donuts we had were great! We split a large twist type glazed donut and that was my favorite. The buttermilk donut, for all its simplicity, may just be one of the best donuts I've ever had but you absolutely can't go wrong with anything. As far as I can tell the only other thing they sell is coffee so if just a donut isn't enough to get you going in the morning then they can help you out that way as well. Worth mentioning that none of the donuts are especially fancy or seasonal (you won't find a pumpkin spice donut here in the fall) but on the other hand, they aren't especially expensive either. Equally noteworthy is the extreme friendliness of the staff. They are always pleasant and truly have gone above and beyond helping me and other customers. Last year, a tiny doughnut shop out in Pleasant Ridge closed its doors, set to relocate to Silverton. My husband and I almost literally wept sitting outside the closed storefront one Saturday morning. You see, Ridge Donut Shop made, by far, the best doughnuts we had ever tasted. Their crisp glazed, moist cake, and light, fluffy filled doughnuts put other local and national chains to shame. These doughnuts were handmade with love. A long, doughnut-less year passed. The new shop in Silverton was suppose to open in January. We drove past at least twice a month. Still, no doughnuts. As winter ended, we had all but accepted that the most beautiful doughnuts in perhaps the world would likely never grace our mouths again. Then, last weekend, we hopped the interstate to Trader Joe's in Kenwood and grabbed some bagels at Marx's for lunch. Deciding to take the "scenic route" back, we headed down Montgomery towards the city. And, there it was. One can't describe that gluttonous feeling of joy as we passed the new Silverton Donut Shop! Sadly, our bellies were full of bagels and the parking lot full of cars, so we opted to come back this weekend. And that's exactly where we headed early this morning. First, the new location is lovely. Much like the old-- simple, but with new fixtures and a more stream-lined layout. As well, the shop is offering more drinks, including hot coffee, in addition to their amazing doughnuts. As for the doughnuts, maybe it was that old line about absence making the heart grow fonder, but the assorted dozen that we got today were even better than I had remembered. Fresh and perfect. I'm not even the least ashamed to admit that we polished off the entire box (with the help of our kids, of course) on the drive home. So, if you missed out on having these doughnuts the 22 years they were in Pleasant Ridge, don't fret. I got up extra early to go doughnuts for my family. The buttermilk doughnut is our favorite. The only issue is sometimes it's open and sometimes it's not. I usually don't have the time to indulge in something like this but today I was up and about with a few free hours. I decided to get some treats and have coffee with mom. I'd read rave reviews here about Silverton Donut Shop and when I've driven by when they're making the donuts it always smells so good so I thought I'd give it a try. From the outside it looks like a hole in the wall. I walk in and the lovely scent of sweet and yeast is an immediate mood lifter. Seriously, just walking into the place is a pleasant experience but it doesn't stop there. The man and woman behind the counter are disarmingly charming. Both are the sort of nice that I attributed to my grand parents when I was a child. THAT nice. An absolute delight to be around and as these are the people that make the donuts very knowledgeable on the morsels in the case. For me, the apple fritter is my favorite morning treat. The sugary sweetness of the glaze, the tartness of fresh apple and the savory mix of cinnamon is the perfect foil to a good, strong cup of coffee. It is my benchmark donut. A test of a new bakery if you will. And The Best Apple Fritter In Cincinnati Award goes to... Oh my goodness is it perfect here. Having managed a bakery I feel confident in saying that making donuts is half science, half art. They've mastered both here. I also saw a big ball of deep fired goodness with a sign that said, "Klunker" in front. I HAD to ask. The gentleman told me that the Klunker is, "A fine quality donut that is part cake donut and part yeast donut." If you know my mother you know that she likes a more straight forward approach to food. The above mentioned fritter would be too much for her but this sounded perfect so I got mom a Klunker and boy is she glad I did. She has been a fan of the style, unbeknownst to me, for longer than I've been alive and she proclaims these to be almost as good as those my grandmother made when my mom was growing up. There is no higher praise. Quaint setting. Immediate comfort. Smells good. Great service. Unbeatable quality. Oh, and it's a terrific value too. I don't want to say cheap because there is nothing shoddy about this experience, it just doesn't cost as much as other places. Come here. Eat this stuff. i stumbled into silverton donut one day on the way to work. I wanted to pick up some breakfast goodies for my co-workers and, seeing their big blue sign, i pulled off the road and checked it out. The Building itself is nothing fancy. a few pastry cases, a counter for coffee, a few small tables here and there. You dont come to silverton donut for the architecture though, you come for the donuts. They hit the nail on the head when it comes to donuts. their cake donuts are never dry, but instead are moist and chewy. they sell a donut called "the cluncker". I havnt quite figured it out yet but, i believe its cake batter that is formed into a chunk, fried, and then covered in a thin layer of glaze. The end result is a crispy outside and moist cake inside that is prefect every bite. They are also the size of a softball, so one is always enough. ;) You can get a dozen for 9 bucks and your out the door. I had passed this hidden little donut shop a couple times and decided to treat myself to a donut breakfast last week. I came in on a Friday morning and no one was in, but the manager and one other worker were very friendly and patiently waited as I contemplated over my donut choice. The variety here was pretty basic and had all of your staples like classic glazed, icing covered donuts, chocolate covered donuts, glazed donut holes, Bavarian cream-filled, sugar twists, etc., but nothing eclectic or exciting. I had a chocolate iced "honeymoon", which had a hallowed out center that was filled with Bavarian cream and it was pretty good, fresh, and moist. I wouldn't say this is one of my favorite donut shops, but for the close vicinity and a coffee/donut breakfast for less than $3, you can't go wrong there! Hands down the best damn glazed (yeast) donut in the city! I sand while I ate it. It was that good! I also picked up a Klunker which reminded me of taking a dump but I looked past the name and bought the glazed caked ball the size of a cutie. It was moist and sweet and did not disappoint. I have driven past this place dozens of times and decided to finally stop on. The lady behind the counter was friendly and the donuts were $1 each. Specialty items like cinnamon roll were a little more but fairly priced fro the size and quality for sure. I know this place will be harder to drive past now. The store front and layout are pretty typical and not at all special but the donuts really do take the show. This place is great! You'll walk into this small little coffee shop and notice limited seating, donuts, newspapers and coffee pots. Then you'll meet the owner, try the delicious donuts/pastries... AND YOU'RE HOOKED! I indulged in an apple fritter. Get one! Not only is it huge, it's absolutely delicious! It's so worth the $1.75 you'll spend. The owner is super friendly, funny, and prides himself in providing great donuts for the community to enjoy. These goodies are made fresh daily and you can taste it. This was my first visit to the Silverton Donut Shop and I was impressed. The place is your simple mom and pop type shop with no bells and whistles--a couple of tables with minimal seating and a couple of coffee options. Don't be fooled, in this case, less is more. I got a Lemon Honeymoon and it was wonderful. The icing was a little granular but the donut was soft and the combination of lemon, icing and donut was delicious. Get a Honeymoon if there are any left! The place is almost relaxing as there are no TVs, Wi-Fi or lounge areas. Just some newspapers, coffee and donuts. I can't wait to go back again! read more
