i'm changing my review about this shop that i posted a few years ago. i purchased a couple of semi precious bracelet strands of stones and had questions about them but after a couple of years of continuous problems i wanted to edit the review and add that the store is a great treasure trove of items for those interested in Wiccan, Pagan, Druid and Celtic traditions. The shop is small but has a LOT of variety, and the store owner helped me find exactly what I needed, even a super obscure book about a rare/niche interest of mine. I didn't even know that book *existed* til I walked in, so I don't think I ever would have found it on a place like Amazon. So that was cool! What I got there: a book on Demeter, a small cauldron, some lovely incense (she has a nice variety), an awesome candle holder, and several small colorful spell candles (they're like a quarter each, which is nice.) So, I have been wanting to go to Moonshadow for several years. And so, last week, I did. Maybe I went on a particularly bad day, but the vibe in there was disappointingly icky. Two people were sitting at a table, griping about various bad employers, and how they should sue. I assume one of the people was a Moonshadow employee--she made super brief eye contact with me when I came in. Another woman was behind a counter, working; she, on the other hand, made no eye contact with me the whole time I was there. I stayed about ten minutes, trying to look at the inventory, but the unhappy vibe was ruining the experience, so I left. Maybe the two people were the resident psychic and an annoying customer; I don't know. Even if that was the case--even if the customer was the one causing the unhappy vibe--I'd still have appreciated a "hello" or a "can we help you find anything" or some other acknowledgement that this was a welcoming place. Retail fail (and, yes, I have worked enough retail over the years to know how to make a customer feel welcome, even in extenuating circumstances!). read more

I used to come here all the time as a teenager. It had a very magical peaceful feel back then. A friend and I took a trip back recently and the feeling had definitely changed. The store was more commercial and the lady behind the counter was awkward. Two people came for tarot readings and the person doing the reading gave leading questions that were obvious not to mention she said the same thing to both customers. This is a well run. Clean. Friendly "occult" shop. It has the feel of your average knitting store. Places to sit and groups to meet at, etc. Their supplies are well organized and reasonably priced. The books and decks are par with Amazon and Powells. The people who work there are wonderful. Patient. Nice. Not weird at all. You get a school teacher vibe from the gal who works there. She's very knowledgeable and spent time helping me find supplies. She wasn't "airy" or annoying. I really appreciated the customer service. Something to note. Their hours are in flux. Call them to find out the opening time if you're in a hurry. All the poor reviews here are based on them being not open when people try to go or open late. Those are their hours and what they need to be since it appears that the gentlemen has some mobility issues. Small businesses are run by people. They are closed on Thursdays. Their voicemail clearly says it as does the door. It's a small shop and not Wal-Mart. Respect and understand that they may be running late for personal reasons and be nice about it. When in doubt or if you're in a hurry. Call. It's not hard and I hope people can be more understanding about supporting niche shops like this so they can stay open. read more

I got a couple of very pretty unusual polished stones here and the storekeeper on duty was very patient and helpful in identifying the stones and opening display cases while I eagerly looked at various rocks and crystals inside. There's a fun assortment of artifacts. I was disappointed by the selection of tarot cards on hand and by the lack of correlation between what was in the card sample binder and which decks were actually available... but it's so difficult to hold it against these guys as they are very eager to please and to help answer customer questions when they can. Firstly, I would like to say that Moonshadow is by far my favorite shop in Portland to find metaphysical and magical supplies. They offer a great selection of incense, tarot, stones, and other esoteric goodies. HOWEVER- they're never open!!! They're a small business, so with that comes the freedom to occasionally close early, I suppose. But today was the third time in two weeks that I've made the drive all the way over there through traffic only to arrive and find a handful of other would-be customers frustrated to discover them closed with a note taped to the door. According to Google, they were open today until 5pm. Not only do they keep weird hours, they don't update their Facebook, website, or Google to reflect when they'll be closed. It was infuriating. While I'm all for supporting local small businesses, I can only do so when they're actually open! Having worked in retail myself for many years, I can only fathom how much business they lose because of this. read more

Especially for such a small place, they have a very impressive collection of beautiful (and high-quality) Pagan jewelry, literature, journals, home decor, crystals, herbs, candles, goblets, incense, swords & daggers, and even a few cloaks. As a resident of the SE Division neighborhood, I am eager to explore and support all the businesses in my area and have attempted to check out MoonShadow on numerous occasions, without success as this mysterious shop has fairly limited hours of operation. Recently, I was taking my dog (a Pitbull) for a walk, and happened to pass by while they were open for business. I wondered in and eventually found the owner (I'm assuming) talking to the only other customer there. I immediately asked, as a matter of courtesy, if it was OK for me to bring my dog in with me. She could have easily said that no dogs were allowed but instead proceeded to go on a completely unnecessary and disturbing rant about the evils of Pitbulls and the horrific things they do to children. She expressed that she had a child there that she needed to protect. I responded with a stupefied "wow!" and made a quick exit. She continued her judgmental and aggressive rant as I got the hell out of there. I am not one take the time to leave a negative Yelp review but I will make the effort on this occasion. I can respect people's phobias and even tolerate people's dog breed prejudices but this crossed the line of unwarranted bullying and stupidity. If you try to avoid general ignorance and insanity, steer clear of this shop at all cost! read more

Good selection of tarot decks and essential oils; excellent gemstone and candle selection; hands-down the largest selection of incense I've seen in my entire life, LOL. They offer a few odds and ends, too, like Tibetan singing bowls, window decorations, carved statues, pouches, trinket boxes, books, etc. Reasonable prices. Yeah, a few items are cheaper on Amazon, but I'd rather pay a few extra bucks, have the item in my possession immediately, AND support a local business instead of putting more money in Jeff Bezos' pocket. Moonshadow owner and staff were very friendly, attentive, and eager to help. I was in the shop for an hour, and both asked me periodically if I needed assistance or had any questions.
