I have so much appreciation for the folks at Nakayama Butsudan who helped me with the not so straighforward challenge of having a Butsudan delivered to Puerto Vallarta Mexico. The Butsudan was packed with care and it arrived quickly in pristine condition. To my surprise even though there are quite a few SGI members here, I could not find a Butsudan. Their website photos and description are spot on and I picked the Dark Persimmon Butsudan. It is beautiful a rich dark brown with a light and gold background and is beautiful in person. read more

Due to Covid, we cannot attend Buddhist meetings at our SGI-USA centers. Usually we buy candles and incense at the bookstore in the center but that was unavailable due to Covid. Fortunately Nakayama carries similar items., we ordered from Nakayama. The items were shipped with care. read more

I walked in by chance while out with friends. I have wanted a butsudan for my family's departed grandparents but always assumed they were super expensive. Not only were there many affordable options but the staff were absolutely wonderful. I was helped so much and it was a very warm experience. This place is magnificent. I've only ordered online and it has always been smooth and a pleasure. The staff has always been so wonderful and considerate. I needed to set up an altar for my omamori gohonzon at a second location. Michio spent time with me on the phone and guided me to the best altar set for my needs and I ended up liking it very much. When a component I thought I was getting didn't come in the original order they sent it out immediately at no additional charge when I inquired. Their altar sets have the some of the older SGI symbols (cranes) and newer (atomic-like symbol) so be aware of that. I've also ordered beads and bead cases and they have always been lovely quality items. This place has been serving the Nichiren/SGI Buddhist community since 1983. That's quite a run. While I don't think this place is officially associated with the SGI, I still feel very comfortable giving them my business and shopping here because of the sincerity and quality goods and prices. This place is wonderful. Do not be deceived by its location inside a comic shop. The employees are extremely nice and make you feel welcome. They sell high quality goods exclusively from Japan. Most of it is religious like shrines, bells, or incense, but they can be used simply to calm the nerves and bring peace to a household. If you are Buddhist, Shinto, Japanese, or not, this is a wonderful shop that sells internationally with an excellent reputation! Also the prices are great!! read more

This is the most WONDERFUL small family-owned business and I can't recommend them highly enough! They give grade A++ service, their prices are very reasonable, and shipping is fast. I especially appreciate that they carry hard-to-find items like certain fine Japanese incense brands I can't find anywhere else in the country. Best customer service!!! These guys know what they are doing and go the extra mile for their customers! I ordered a starter butsudan and some other accessories from them. It was packaged very well, however the cup holder had a little flaw. I sent a pic of the cup holder; wondering if this was a defect? They quickly replied back stating that it does not look normal and apologized for their mistake. They immediately sent a brand new cup and holder set. I purchased a set of Juzu (prayer) beads from them last month, and because I wasn't paying attention, I ended up ordering beads that were too small for me. As usual, Nakayama Butsudans' outstanding customer service came into play when I explained my error to them. I was just going to purchase another set and give away the one I had ordered in error (to someone with smaller hands, LOL). They immediately offered to exchange the beads for the larger size I needed, and I received them just a few days later, even before I had the chance to return the smaller set. Absolutely outstanding. This review is for their online website sales only. I haven't visited their showroom. Their website requires a minimum $30 order, plus shipping depending on the items you select. I created an order and emailed it on their website server. Within an hour, someone called me back to varify the order, inform me of the shipping charges, and collect payment via credit card. I received my order 2 days later. Not bad! My only gripe is one of the items I ordered was flawed. I called them to see if they could send a new one, and they said I got the last one. (The item is still listed as available online, however.) After consulting a manager, an employee called me back to offer to send 2 stickers to cover up the flaw. Good enough, I guess. The best thing about this store is that they sell butsugu with the Nichiren Shoshu crane, and they are located in the US. I'd say customer service is pretty good, too. read more

The incense here is the best you can buy anywhere it's ALL natural. The bells are hand pounded and have amazing sound with a huge selection. It is a family owned business with great customer service and quality products. I highly recommend this shop for Buddhist products. read more

I live in MN and I bought a plastic Butsudan and bell set that was gently used from their website. It was packaged with extreme care so it wouldn't break in the mail, and it came pretty quick! I bought the plastic gently used one because it was the most affordable given my budget, but it's still so lovely and a great substitute for the more intricate wooden ones. It's perfect and I'm so glad I finally have a Butsudan of my own. It makes me feel so much more connected with my heritage and with my loved ones who have passed away. I have placed several online orders with this store and have been happy with the service I received for each one. It is my previous order that motivated me to write this review though: I had ordered a new butsudan back in January (2022) and because of COVID, FedEx basically missed the scheduled delivery and then stopped trying. I lost patience and told FedEx to send the item back. I contacted the store to let them know it would be returned and also requested a refund. The person who responded was apologetic and understanding, and issued the refund right away. Fast forward to now: I decided it was time to try again and placed my order online without telling them that I had made a previous attempt. They must have recognized my information and expedited the shipping, because I received it less than 48 hours after placing the order! I am impressed by this level of customer service and will remain a happy customer. read more

We purchase a wonderful beautiful Butsudan cabinet with lights and automatic opening doors that was delivered to Seattle in less than a week. I have been on the lookout for some high quality all natural Japanese incense for a while and so I was thrilled when I found Nakayama Butsudans right here in Portland! And now I am even more thrilled as I have a wonderful new collection that I am enjoying immensely. I should also mention that the customer service here is excellent! The lady that greeted me when I entered was very generous with her time. She graciously answered all my questions and helped me understand their large selection of different incense, which they provide to customers world wide BTW.
